Good food & good vibes abide at the Berkley A&W Drive-in. This is holding the traditions of a drive-up restaurant on 12 Mile Rd in Berkley where they bring the food to your car. I had a special request from my Dad, who lives an hour and a half away for his birthday. He requested I bring him coney dogs from Berkley. Although there are A&W's closer to him, he stated they are nothing like the ones from here. I'm very grateful that they took my order for four footlong coney dogs 20 minutes before closing. I zipped over in 15 minutes and they had them ready. They also packaged the chili and the onions separately for better reheating once I made it to my destination without the buns getting soggy. Like the man said. You can't go home again. I vividly remember as a boy we'd load up the car and make the short trek to our neighborhood A&W drive-in. The heavy glass mugs full of the thick, syrupy root beer and footlong coney dogs that were as long as your arm. Never veered from the plan. Always a footlong and a large root beer. My sister always got onion rings. Fast forward to the Berkley, Mi. location -2020. It seems as if something got dented or broken it was never repaired. I think I hit this speaker with the car door in 1975. It's still bent up. A whole new generation of workers managing 60 year old equipment. But it's all good. In my mind if it ain't broke, don't fix it. This location operates with a similar philosophy; If it is broke, don't fix it. I'm ok with that, too! Sadly, the hot dog tastes nothing like it did back in the day. No snap when you bite into it and not much flavour in the dog itself. The onions are milder but the chili is pretty close to what I remember. The root beer seems different but it still has a nice kick. The big question is: has the food changed or did I? Maybe a combination of both? It's still a nifty experience to visit. Whether you're a veteran of the drive-in or a newbie, stop in and give it a whirl. The ladies are still as pleasant as ever...even though they don't wear the roller skates, anymore! You can still get a great deal with daily specials and that wonderful root beer! We were on our way back from lunch with a friend when we spotted this icon from history: an A&W with car side service and car hops to bring your order out to you! I thought I'd gone through a time warp, but it was for real. So my car automatically swerved into and parked at one of the stations and we looked over the menu and placed our order for 2 Small Cones and a gallon of Root Beer to go! I was glad we ordered the small because after a filling meal at lunch it was the perfect amount. Service was excellent and historic! Then we sat and enjoyed our Cones, backed out, and reentered 2021. Gentle suggestion, update the hours on the website, please. Fresh, hot and vintage. That's how I can best describe this old school car-hop. Everything from the ingredients to the HOUSE MADE Rootbeer is fresh and made to order. Some of my menu favorites are the AWesome burger, (which can only be found in Berkley) which is 3 1/3 lb beef Pattie's topped with crisp lettuce, plump tomato slices, white onion and AWesome sauce. Don't have that big of an appetite? I suggest a coney cheese dog, or a regular coney dog topped with diced onion and mustard. Or if you're looking for a quick, shareable snack, try the Corndog nuggets! If you're driving down 12 mile or passing by on Greenfield stop in to this long time family owned establishment. The bad: the root beer tasted like the fountain is dirty? Needs a good scrub...or the water is crappy. Not sure which but it wasn't good. Also I felt this odd need to tip. The girl didn't do anything other than bring my food out which they do at McDonald's when they can't get their act together...but it was almost like, uh do you need change? ... Guess not. Not recommended. Stopped there today for some papa burgers and fries. It took twenty minutes for food to arrive. It was barely even warm. The burgers were cold. If you do go there, check to see if your food is hot, before you pay. That way you can send it back, or refuse it, and drive away. Go some where else that serves hot food. read more

An American Classic in Berkley! I love the old fashioned drive in feel of the place and there is simply nothing better than an ice cold root beer! A&W invented the bacon cheeseburger so that's my go-to when I'm here, but the foot long Coney's are pretty great as well. This place is a dilapidated relic of a bygone era. It's been here in this location FOREVER (or at lease since the dawn of the automobile) and is somehow still open despite the fact there is never anyone here... except during Woodward Dream Cruise. I would imagine they do 90% of their business during the month of August and the other 10% scattered across September-thru-July. I am thinking they pull in just enough $$$ from Dream Cruise to pay the rent over the remainder of the year, but not enough $$$ for basic maintenance on top of that. The place is seriously falling apart. The parking lot is full of pot holes (not very attractive considering it is a DRIVE-up establishment). They never seemed to plow during the winter (my car got stuck in their parking lot multiple times during the winter, once again not cool for a DRIVE-up). The place just looks dirty, and rusty, and unattractive, and kind of like Time forgot it altogether. That being said, I've never had any problems with the food from this A&W. When you've gotta have a Papa Burger and some Cheese Curds, they serve 'em up just fine here. Root Beer Float? Yup, they do that just fine too. read more

Need I say it, do not bring your freshly washed car or tuned suspension in here. Pull right up to a spot. Drive in, not drive through. Flick the switch to call in your order to half the staff of Berkley High School, for whom working here is a right of passage compared to the posh modernism of the local Burger King. The employees are dressed with classic aprons and smiles, fresh-faced youth for the most part who prove surprisingly quick with change and always friendly. One star is purely for the great service experienced even when the kitchen proves slow. Did you think this was super fast food? Drive on if you need a meal in five minutes. The wait is probably going to be longer than you like, but you get piping hot fries, thoroughly melted cheese on hot patties, and foaming root beer floats that should not be consumed before your meal or else you will have nothing else for your lunch or dinner. Turn on the radio, kick up your heels, and have a conversation while you wait, just like old times. Food quality is good though it doesn't come exactly cheap. They do the classics best: hamburgers, onion rings, french fries, shakes, and floats. I don't eat hot dogs and their chicken tenders can be hit and miss, but the staff is kind if something wasn't quite right. This place is old time cool and everyone in the summer knows it. Those line-ups and waits get long at prime time, but the rest of the year, the throwback quality and food are worth the stop. VERDICT: 3.5 stars read more

Classic case of do not judge a book by its cover... I lived in Berkley for over a year before I finally broke down and checked this place out. This is no small feat because downtown Berkley only has one other place to get fast food. However, like the others mentioned, it looks pretty rundown on the outside, and I am pretty picky when it comes to food & cleanliness, etc. For some reason, my brain seemed to think rundown building must equate cold yucky food. Luckily I read the yelp reviews and gave the place a shot. The food was good reasonably priced fast food. We've only ever had fantastic service and delicious food here. The old school feel adds to the charm...a drive in burger joint, c'mon, what's not to love? The order takers are mostly teenagers but they are courteous and friendly. Tonight's double bacon cheeseburger and perfectly seasoned fries was a great way to eat on a summer Friday night. The icy cold root beer in a frosty mug is *divine*. I don't know why but it tastes better in that Friday mug! It's fun to see some of the old time cars hang out there, too. This place is classic I was intimidated in coming to eat here because the place looks run down, but don't let that fool you. This place and their food is legit. Their fries are one of the best I've ever had for fast food. They cook as you order so the food always comes out hot. With that being said, the wait isn't too long - typical fast food drive thru. I recently had their Papa Burger and it taste better than McDonalds Big Mac. They seem to have similar sauce that the Big Mac is famous for. Pricing is decent but the quality is on point. Don't waste your time. Let me start by saying I used to eat here for years but things have really changed. On 2 seperate occasions I have pulled up and placed an order. The cook/food prep guy dug in his ear and continued to make the order I had placed. Needless to say I pulled off. The second time I saw the same cook picking his nose with his bare hands and continued to make the food - with his bare hands . This was the second time recently when I pulled up and said to myself, "I'll give this place another chance".... Luckily I was near where I could see this and pulled off before the order was brought to me. I love this A an W. It's a drive-in and sit fast food restaurant. It's like Sonic, but I believe this was here way before Sonic. The bacon cheeseburgers are awesome. The people are friendly.
