Waited a few minutes, but was ready around the time I requested. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (with Piedmontese beef) and had fries and onion rings. I'll start with the good. The fries were very good. Crispy and salted, they definitely hit the spot. The onion rings were the best I've had. Hearty batter with a perfect crunch. Absolutely delightful and I could have eaten a million of them. Onto the burger. First of all, there was no bacon. If you're charging over $3 for bacon, gotta make sure it makes it on the burger. I also ordered the bun toasted; it was not. Good start. The patty had zero flavor. No seasoning could be detected. The only redeeming part was the burnt onion which I added. They really were burnt but had nice flavor. I'd give the burger a D rating. For $25, it really was a giant disappointment and eff you. Can't say I'm wanting to return. Such a shame. First time at the Redcoat and I'm already planning my return. I loved EVERYTHING about this place from the food to the atmosphere to our amazing server to the outside facade. Before I get to the food, I want to say THANK YOU to our lovely server who welcomed us warmly, made sure we always had what we needed, took our photo, and got our orders right. Now the food...let's start with a shout-out to the kitchen who perfectly executed the widely varied burger topping and temperature combinations for six people. My meal...magically battered onion rings and mushrooms followed by one of the finest burgers I've ever swallowed. 8 oz of flavorful medium rare juicy bliss on a fantastic bun topped with lettuce tomato pickle and cole slaw joy. Exterior is really rundown. The paint is peeling and parking lot is more gravel and pit holes than paved. The interior is very dark so it is harder to see the state of things. Although some of the booths have seen better days. Our waitress was very friendly. Prices were on the high side with a steep price for customizations. $18 for just a burger $2.35 for bacon, 75¢ each for cheese and bbq sauce. Bring my burger to over $20 without even including fries. The burger looked a lot better than what it was. I asked for medium rare and it was closer to well, only a little pink to the burger. The meat itself was dry and flavorless. No seasoning or char flavor to the burger. Bun was close to being stale. The lettuce was surprisingly very bitter. Which also negatively impacted the overall flavor. I've been coming here for years and the food is still as good as it always was. Consistency is so important. For starters, we got the French onion soup, battered mushrooms, and Scotch egg. All were fantastic, no notes. As far as entrees, I wasn't too impressed with the Cobb salad but the portion was generous. The burgers were perfect as usual. We also shared a Mac and cheese and it was perfectly cheesy and delicious. We shared the bread pudding for dessert and it was great. Honestly such a staple in the Detroit area. My only gripe with this location is the horrible red lighting in the dining area. I always feel like a vampire and struggle to see in there. The seating in some of the booths feels kind of low and too close to th table. Otherwise, the food is consistently delicious and worth the minor annoyances. read more

The service is amazing here!! Very friendly and attentive. Big shout out to Jon! I wish I loved the food. I've been here a few times and it's just okay. Maybe I'm not ordering the right things. The calamari is pretty good, but the peppers served with it are full of seeds so you have work to do to empty them if you don't want a mouth full of seeds. The fried pickles and onion rings are pretty decent too, but a lot more breading than I expected. The French onion soup is tasty. The clam chowder is good too. The Cobb Salad was pretty bland. I'm not sure why. Everything was fresh and tossed beautifully but it just lacked flavor. The homemade ranch dressing is very good. My mom enjoyed her burger so I'll have to order one next time. It's made to your preferred level of doneness and they have a special sauce. The decor is fun---very red and moody. I love the red leather booths, although a few are a bit torn. Ordered the brasserie burger medium. It's a $22 burger. For that price, it should be top-notch, cooked to order. Burger was presented without temp stick....first tip off and waitress ran away, never to check on us until the end of the meal, second tip off. Did I mention the $22 burger is ala carter? $22 can't include crisps or fries? Everyone knows fries are a cheap filler side dish. The big disappointment, my medium burger was raw. Only seared and cold in the middle. Disgusting. The manager was awesome, explained they had new cooks in the back and that the kitchen was backed up. As someone who's worked in the service industry for many years I understood. I picked up the food took it home and when I took a bite the burger was completely pink. I called the restaurant, brought back the burger, they apologized and had it remade. I have to say that after all these years, I didn't realize Redcoat has yet to be reviewed. I have been here a handful of times in the past and recently paid it a visit with some good friends of mine. I don't believe I've been here since before Covid, so I was both excited and hesitant to try it again because you just never know if something you enjoyed previously will maintain the same standards you are used to. Well fellow foodies, I am pleased to report Redcoat is still an awesome restaurant. First of all I was shocked they were able to seat our party of 7 in less than 5 minutes on a Friday night, kudos to you guys! The atmosphere is so inviting and lively. Even though the bright red lightning can be a bit much, it gives the whole place its charm (hence the name of the establishment). The menu has all your bases covered, and pretty much everything is delicious. Besides the obvious burgers they are known for, they have great soups, salads, sandwiches, wings, and comforting entrees. While everyone else got the classic beef burgers, I went against the grain and ordered their special that evening which was the salmon burger. Admittedly I was famished by the time we had dinner here, but I have to say all the food I consumed was amazing. The seafood chowder was a great starter, and the batter on the onion rings is some of the best you will ever have. Surprisingly my friends and I even decided to stick around for some desserts which is not something we often do. We had chocolate pudding, creme brulee, bread pudding, and key lime pie (although I believe this one was frozen and didn't thaw properly). Overall a fantastic night out. I was on a business trip and wanted to find a place to grab a beer and knock out some emails. I came across Redcoat and went to the bar. There were two very drunk older gentleman at the bar, but they were harmless. Arielle was tending bar and she was very warm and friendly. They have some good beer selections and a fairly decent variety of menu items, including filet mignon. I decided on the burger and some truffle fries. The food came out faster than a Jimmy John's sandwich, which was surprising. But the burger was very good and the truffle fries are the best ones I have ever had. With normal truffle fries, the cheese is usually just on the top fries and/or it falls to the bottom of the plate. Not here. The cheese is almost baked on and every fry tastes like a truffle fry. This place needs a serious reality check. I order all the time and never complain. I called to address a carry out order- we received two rotten salads. The manager Markus told me I would need to text him photos to prove this. I did let him know that this is a ridiculous process- he responded by saying "you could be lying". I told him that this is exactly why the redcoat locations have lost so much business, they do not value their customers. His response was to hang up on me. This is the best place I have ever been to in my entire life. Everything I have had from here in the many times I've been is the best thing I've tasted. The onion rings melt in your mouth and have a great flavor (and I've never liked onion rings), the macaroni is SO good. I didn't take a picture of the other food cause I needed to eat it so badly. The outside is a bit dingy and the entrance is less then appealing however once inside we were quickly greeted by a friendly server. The inside is dark with red lights. The booths are small and tight and I mean tight. There are 4 person tables down the middle and some bigger tables around as well. Our waitress was very tentive. Our appetizers were quick as weak as my coleslaw that comes with my shepherds pie. There is a full bar and lots of beer options s. The mac n cheese is a large portion and overall pretty tasty. The shepherds pie has a nice crust on the potato's with a great flavor. The inside has beef carrots peas and corn. Great flavor! Overall service was great. Food was solid. At a time of frosty relations between nations, we Canadians entered the Red Coat (West Bloomfield) cautiously but with open arms and, more importantly, NO arms; not since the American Revolution have the two countries felt such tension, recent feelings as bitter as the cold winter day 91-year-old mother and I were escaping for the warmth of Red Coat's ambiance and people. After all, we Canucks were the original red coats, many of us today still that shade, our eyes crayoned by the media now at work snapping the cord that connects us by the world's longest border and strongest trade relationship. In short, the media (not leaders) have pitted us against each other - much to the chagrin, incidentally, of our ancestors who fled desperately to Windsor-Detroit to work for Henry Ford and to whom both cities owe generations of debt. Let's just say we felt the need to return the favors done by Motown, Michigan, America, to reach across that river to ease hostilities and re-sanctify bonds forged in literal fire through the wars of Independence and 1812 (not to mention all others fought TOGETHER). Pushing mother in her wheelchair across the hardwood floor under dim lighting through a dark interior we settled for a cozy corner by the old wine cellar and noticed no TV. We sighed in appreciation for finally stumbling upon a pub reminiscent of Europe, its list of that continent's beers yet another accoutrement to the old world feel. Mother ordered a Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux (if you can believe it b/c SHE couldn't) and normally critical of, well, everything, the old lady seemed stunned by "a restaurant wine." Equally satisfied was I with my beer/s as I settled in for a long winter's tap. The Amish Pot Pie had "real chicken", mother smiled, its flakey crust the work of an artisan baker. My burger? As promised, breaking personal records in the land of a million such varieties, the server adding a free topping of grilled onions to further satiate taste buds already in awe. Our hearts further swelled upon observation of the tavern's eternal friendliness; feelings of camaraderie abounding at neighboring tables as the magical chemistry of Christmas music soothed all's need for warmth and nostalgia. The final proof for the need of a truce (after the server helped mother in the bathroom) was the manager's move to assure us the same level of love from the exact same young woman upon return; yet more of that high caliber American "service" that holds THIS truth to be self-evident: more important than food, drinks, ambiance, etc. is the relationship with guests. Because "connection" is not a priority in Canada (which might explain our strained relations) we bathed in the Red Coat's objective to meet our needs to feel welcome, appreciated, respected and good - "political differences" be damned. We'd come in peace and left the same way, mother's wheel chair gliding through the snow as the peace of the season was upon us. read more
