This is a very popular restaurant and should be. The food is very good, with lots of selections. Two things bother me though. One is they have crowded so many tables and booths into their dining room that it is difficult to enjoy your meal. It is just too tight everywhere and when someone gets up from a table or booth next to you, they are almost in your food! Also, and this has been true for years, the parking lot is a disaster. I cannot figure out why such a successful restaurant cannot afford to fix the LARGE potholes and other problems in their lot. Someday they are going to lose all their money to a person who has been seriously injured or (God forbid) dies from a fall in their parking lot. It is making it difficult to really go there anymore. read more

I was driving home when I realized that I was given the wrong burger. Stay with me. I had been puzzled about why the burger lacked flavor and seasoning. I had to add ketchup to amp up the flavor. At first, I attributed it to the Scotch egg I had, a soft-boiled egg wrapped in well-seasoned sausage and fried. Both the sausage and the accompanying sauce were savory and tasty. And then, I thought, potentially, it was the battered onion rings that dulled my taste buds. However, logically, the Brasserie burger includes bacon, caramelized onions, and Dijon mustard, flavors that are not muted nor shy about shouting their presence. I checked my leftovers and found no evidence of those add-ons, and then found my receipt. I was charged for a plain hamburger, so at least I didn't pay more than I should have. But I was disappointed not to have received what I ordered. Service was otherwise fine. read more

How the mighty have fallen. What a shame. I can no longer say Red Coat has one of the best burgers in the area. I can't even say they have a good burger. Wow. Ordered takeout for dinner. Waited a few minutes, but was ready around the time I requested. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (with Piedmontese beef) and had fries and onion rings. I'll start with the good. The fries were very good. Crispy and salted, they definitely hit the spot. The onion rings were the best I've had. Hearty batter with a perfect crunch. Absolutely delightful and I could have eaten a million of them. Onto the burger. First of all, there was no bacon. If you're charging over $3 for bacon, gotta make sure it makes it on the burger. I also ordered the bun toasted; it was not. Good start. The patty had zero flavor. No seasoning could be detected. The only redeeming part was the burnt onion which I added. They really were burnt but had nice flavor. I'd give the burger a D rating. For $25, it really was a giant disappointment and eff you. Can't say I'm wanting to return. Such a shame. What used to be one of my favorites is now a lowlight. 2 stars because of the sides. read more

First time at the Redcoat and I'm already planning my return. I loved EVERYTHING about this place from the food to the atmosphere to our amazing server to the outside facade. Before I get to the food, I want to say THANK YOU to our lovely server who welcomed us warmly, made sure we always had what we needed, took our photo, and got our orders right. Now the food...let's start with a shout-out to the kitchen who perfectly executed the widely varied burger topping and temperature combinations for six people. My meal...magically battered onion rings and mushrooms followed by one of the finest burgers I've ever swallowed. 8 oz of flavorful medium rare juicy bliss on a fantastic bun topped with lettuce tomato pickle and cole slaw joy. Truly heaven and I remembered to eat it slowly. Thank you Redcoat for transporting me back to a simpler time when everyone agreed. read more

Redcoat Tavern - Men out for burgers during a bridal shower. - Bars Near Me - Royal Oak, Michigan

Exterior is really rundown. The paint is peeling and parking lot is more gravel and pit holes than paved. The interior is very dark so it is harder to see the state of things. Although some of the booths have seen better days. Our waitress was very friendly. Prices were on the high side with a steep price for customizations. $18 for just a burger $2.35 for bacon, 75¢ each for cheese and bbq sauce. Bring my burger to over $20 without even including fries. The burger looked a lot better than what it was. I asked for medium rare and it was closer to well, only a little pink to the burger. The meat itself was dry and flavorless. No seasoning or char flavor to the burger. Bun was close to being stale. The lettuce was surprisingly very bitter. Which also negatively impacted the overall flavor. Fries were really good, no need to add salt. Burger Cooke & flavor: 7/30 Burger presentation: 8/10 Bun quality: 6/10 Toppings: 6/10 Fries: 10/10 Price: 3/10 Ambiance/ service: 6/10 Total: 46/100 read more

They still have the best burger in town at this location. I love their Carribean Chowder as well as Shepards Pie. The service is a little slow. It's good enough that I always leave a 20%+ tip. The ambience is old school burger. The seating at the booths is too tight. I always try to get a table. It could use a subtle facelift. It feels a bit used up. The tables need refinishing, they could use new flooring. The restrooms though almost always clean feel old which makes them feel a bit grungy. This is my favorite place by a large margin for a burger. read more

We LOVE coming to Redcoat Tavern. The food is always on point. Their ham and cheese sandwich is killer, which sounds nuts for ham and cheese. I also love the vibe in there. My only knock is everything being a la carte, it'd be nice to have a sandwich with a side. read more

I've been coming here for years and the food is still as good as it always was. Consistency is so important. For starters, we got the French onion soup, battered mushrooms, and Scotch egg. All were fantastic, no notes. As far as entrees, I wasn't too impressed with the Cobb salad but the portion was generous. The burgers were perfect as usual. We also shared a Mac and cheese and it was perfectly cheesy and delicious. We shared the bread pudding for dessert and it was great. Honestly such a staple in the Detroit area. My only gripe with this location is the horrible red lighting in the dining area. I always feel like a vampire and struggle to see in there. The seating in some of the booths feels kind of low and too close to th table. Otherwise, the food is consistently delicious and worth the minor annoyances. read more

The service is amazing here!! Very friendly and attentive. Big shout out to Jon! I wish I loved the food. I've been here a few times and it's just okay. Maybe I'm not ordering the right things. The calamari is pretty good, but the peppers served with it are full of seeds so you have work to do to empty them if you don't want a mouth full of seeds. The fried pickles and onion rings are pretty decent too, but a lot more breading than I expected. The French onion soup is tasty. The clam chowder is good too. The Cobb Salad was pretty bland. I'm not sure why. Everything was fresh and tossed beautifully but it just lacked flavor. The homemade ranch dressing is very good. My mom enjoyed her burger so I'll have to order one next time. It's made to your preferred level of doneness and they have a special sauce. The decor is fun---very red and moody. I love the red leather booths, although a few are a bit torn. They have a parking lot. This is a popular place and they are always quite busy. I'll keep coming back to try more things. read more

Is this a bit on the higher end for a burger? Yes. Will you be disappointed? Never! When we visited recently I said "I have never looked at their menu. I always just go for a burger.". This place has been a stable in my rotation for many years! I frequent their RO location as I'm closer to it, but I've also been to their WB location as well. If you're looking for a great burger, look no further! Their fries and onion rings are tasty too. Their menu has other offerings but I go there to get a delicious burger. They have a good beer list too which is nice. It's kitschy and old school in there which I like. Their prices seem to have gone up a lot recently, but everything has I suppose. Ordered the brasserie burger medium. It's a $22 burger. For that price, it should be top-notch, cooked to order. Burger was presented without temp stick....first tip off and waitress ran away, never to check on us until the end of the meal, second tip off. Did I mention the $22 burger is ala carter? $22 can't include crisps or fries? Everyone knows fries are a cheap filler side dish. The big disappointment, my medium burger was raw. Only seared and cold in the middle. Disgusting. At the very end of the meal, when the waitress finally stopped by (she had no other tables), she blamed it on new staff....it took her a few minutes of making excuses to begrudgingly suggest money off. By this point, we were just done. Sorry to drag down your score, but you eserve it. read more

Just a heads up- The first time I came here my order was wrong and I waited over an hour for my to go order. The manager was awesome, explained they had new cooks in the back and that the kitchen was backed up. As someone who's worked in the service industry for many years I understood. He comped my fries and all was well. I figured I'd give them another try. This time I ordered a burger. I asked for it to be well done no pink. I picked up the food took it home and when I took a bite the burger was completely pink. I called the restaurant, brought back the burger, they apologized and had it remade. The waitress and I cut the burger and it was still pink. She took it back again and when she brought it back she said that according to the cooks, it was just the lighting that was making it pink. I took it home took another bite and it was STILL pink. It's a $20 burger, pretty bummed about this experience and probably won't ever go back! read more

Massive burgers and pub fare that you crave. This is a tavern's tavern. Careful ordering, the portions on average are huge. I wasted too many fries and onion rings! Do not sleep on their wings (which weirdly, are not TOO much, lol). Classic tavern food that has some sneaky gourmet-ish items on the menu (prime rib). Snappy but accommodating front of house but great servers like Scott. Neighborhood/area gem without pretense. read more

I recommended Red Coat to the "Burger Review Guy" and he was understandably unimpressed. Redcoat has to up its game and stop charging exorbitant prices for EVERYTHING thinking its history will justify it - it doesn't. A $20 burger with almost nothing on it better be fantastic - but yours is not so stop milking your customer for everything on your menu. read more

I have to say that after all these years, I didn't realize Redcoat has yet to be reviewed. I have been here a handful of times in the past and recently paid it a visit with some good friends of mine. I don't believe I've been here since before Covid, so I was both excited and hesitant to try it again because you just never know if something you enjoyed previously will maintain the same standards you are used to. Well fellow foodies, I am pleased to report Redcoat is still an awesome restaurant. First of all I was shocked they were able to seat our party of 7 in less than 5 minutes on a Friday night, kudos to you guys! The atmosphere is so inviting and lively. Even though the bright red lightning can be a bit much, it gives the whole place its charm (hence the name of the establishment). The menu has all your bases covered, and pretty much everything is delicious. Besides the obvious burgers they are known for, they have great soups, salads, sandwiches, wings, and comforting entrees. While everyone else got the classic beef burgers, I went against the grain and ordered their special that evening which was the salmon burger. Admittedly I was famished by the time we had dinner here, but I have to say all the food I consumed was amazing. The seafood chowder was a great starter, and the batter on the onion rings is some of the best you will ever have. Surprisingly my friends and I even decided to stick around for some desserts which is not something we often do. We had chocolate pudding, creme brulee, bread pudding, and key lime pie (although I believe this one was frozen and didn't thaw properly). Overall a fantastic night out. Can't wait for our next outing here! read more

Old school staple in the area. Very busy for dinner rush. Never had a bad meal. Great service too!

Friends suggested trying their burger here. The burger was fine, no complaint here. Though I don't quite understand the hype of the burger. Maybe the premium version would be better? Also, the burger doesn't come with fries, you need to order it separately. The service was the interesting part. The waitresses for our table were good. But the person greeting you at the door was not very nice. She was in a rush to seat me and did not want to listen to me while I tried to explain to her that I belonged to a big party of people and they already got the table. read more

Everything could improve! Soggy bread, rotten meat that tastes off and a general manager more interested in making excuses for it than fixing it. So in other words we are lying. His fix was to send another burger, no thanks. We will not be ordering from them ever again. read more

It has been a couple of years ... and I was jonesing for a Brasserie Burger and onion rings. The prior hostess (moat dragon) is gone and replaced by a pleasant and cheerful young lady. My server was Ali; and she rocks. Attentive without being obsequious. The Brasserie Burger is fantastic. The restroom is clean. The decor is best described as Olde West Bordello. The exterior is neglected, fading, flaking paint and reveals too much bare weather clapboards. Best burger in Michigan, no funny business. If there was a top three situation, it would definitely be there. Will all the newspapers say that it is. But I can affirm that it is something you just have to have. You come in and it's kind of dark and a little dated as far as a decor goes but so what lol. They have a hell of a burger menu, you can customize it to whatever you need. I got their signature burger, it comes with cheese, onions, tomato, bacon, egg, and another or a couple more fixins. I also got onion rings that went really great with the zip sauce. The burger is huge, I don't think you heard me, the burger is huge lol. You might actually have to cut it in half. I won't, because I refuse to let it think it got the better of me but if you do I understand. It is super good and super feeling and super tasty and cooked to perfection. Everything is good about this place. The food. The service. Everything. When I am in Michigan, this is a a must. read more

Royal Oak location is the best! Food, drinks. They are always busy and the dint take reservations.

This place needs a serious reality check. I order all the time and never complain. I called to address a carry out order- we received two rotten salads. The manager Markus told me I would need to text him photos to prove this. I did let him know that this is a ridiculous process- he responded by saying "you could be lying". I told him that this is exactly why the redcoat locations have lost so much business, they do not value their customers. His response was to hang up on me. Markus is clearly an insecure man child that needs a therapist. If you can't handle a customer complaint, can you imagine how he deals with his wife or kids? The outside is a bit dingy and the entrance is less then appealing however once inside we were quickly greeted by a friendly server. The inside is dark with red lights. The booths are small and tight and I mean tight. There are 4 person tables down the middle and some bigger tables around as well. Our waitress was very tentive. Our appetizers were quick as weak as my coleslaw that comes with my shepherds pie. There is a full bar and lots of beer options s. The mac n cheese is a large portion and overall pretty tasty.
