Okay, I have been back a couple of times since the previous update and will admit it is better again. Maybe they had staffing or management issues that were bringing them down for a while. Whatever the problem was, things seem to have improved significantly. The burgers and clam chowder have been consistently as great as they were before and the service is excellent. Hands down the best burgers in the city! Located on Orchard Lake in West Bloomfield with plenty of parking in an adjacent parking lot. Love that the seating options include table, patio or bar seating. And Ryan is our favorite bartender of all time. We don't eat here unless we know he's working. His sense of sarcastic humor always makes our night. The bar banter and big screen TVs make for a great atmosphere. The food is awesome. Burgers are always top tier and the seafood chowder with a hint of curry spice is to die for. I do also tried the fish and chips, the grilled fish sandwich and the chicken pot pie which were all winners. The next time you're craving a good burger, you should go here. read more

Great place for an upscale or casual classic burger joint! They have different types of protein for your burger to choose from They have been around along time, with their original location on Woodward in Royal Oak. The toppings for the burgers are second to none, the sides are fresh and made to order like fried mushrooms and onion rings. Fries are good and hot. I had the house salad with blue cheese and chicken and it was really good and gourmet, looks like it was prepared by a chef. My wife had a burger, she liked it so much she didn't even offer me a bite. The 6 of us shared a cookie sangwich sundae dessert. Atmosphere inside is clean and modern. I've been coming to Redcoat for years. I think 3 stars is about right. I'd say you have to be real careful what you order. I've always felt underwhelmed by their food. Like, the burgers are great--but there is something about the sauce they add that ruins it, so I need to get my burger without the sauce. Tonight, my wedge was soggy and the dressing was bland (made more bland by all of the water from the wedge). I'm not at all a fan of skinny fries so I did not like them but they were prepared correctly so that's just a matter of personal preference. The scotch egg seemed unnecessarily greasy. If it had had a Panko coating that probably would not have been an issue. The sirloin tips were good but the light brown sauce they are served in was overly flavored with whatever chili they use and other spices and, for me and the 3 others at my table, they were unpleasant bec of the sauce. I just did not like the flavor (they should just serve them with their zip sauce). My Bloody Mary was also not good. In their defense, I often find bars make a lousy Bloody Mary. The cream puff sundae was good. I'd say as long as you order a burger or a mount vernon and a beer, you'll enjoy your meal. Maybe I should add a bowl of soup to that because their soups get high marks. Nice atmosphere. read more

This location, eek - needs exterior improvements, no signage and potholes in the parking lot and the inside needs some updates (specifically the restrooms). However the food was good so I would say if you are in the area already and are looking for a good burger/food, this place would be okay. We got burgers, (I really like that they have a lower fat option with the Piedmontese beef), fries, Mahi-mahi sandwich, mussels and a salad (get dressing on the side). Everyone seemed pleased with their meals and a burger can definitely be 2 meals (at least for us). The burgers all come with lettuce, tomato & mayo and there are a whole slew of toppings (at an extra cost) that you can add such as an egg, truffle mayo, grilled onions etc. The service was good. I really want to love this location and we have gone several times (many years ago) to the original Woodward street location and enjoyed many meals there but, sorry, don't go out of your way to this W. Use to be my Neighborhood bar! I recall having an evening beer at WB Red Coat tavern after golf on a Thursday night watching the Lions beat the Chiefs. The bar was full and the restaurant was empty(1 family). Management came to the bar area and advised us we were cheering too loud for the Lions. He threatened to turn the game off or throw us out. There were at least 40 people in the bar. Now we no longer visit this bar especially on game days. read more

Growing up, my Dad worked at Royal Oak Beaumont and as a special treat a few times a year he would take us for burgers. This was our first time here and I was excited to try their burgers. Unfortunately we left pretty disappointed. The Good: Service was very good, attentive and fast. Actually almost too fast; salad came out within a couple minutes and burger within a few minutes of that, before my salad was finished. The burgers were good but not excellent. The Bad: The place isnt very clean. The woman's bathroom is really grimy. With as many people who are working there they should probably shift some staff to cleaning. Red Coat never disappoints. Haven't been in Michigan for a few years and this place is a must go to. Just get the classic burger on a sesame seed bun with some zip sauce (it's a Michigan thing). I don't eat gourmet burgers much. I'm more of diner smash burger kind of girl. I've been to redcoat many times, Both locations. Royal oak is still OG to me but overall the same. Currently they are doing curbside pickup. They have you pay curbside also. So get your payment ready! I never knew they do any type of seasoned fries since it isn't on the menu. Just okay. Our original plan tonight was Smashburger, and their outdoor patio, but they only had carryout available... not sure if you could still eat it outdoors. I have been to the Royal Oak Red Coat before but not this location. The menu is mostly the same, I believe. I'm only doing patio dining right now and this was actually my first time out since March, doing waitservice. Our waitress was very good, and our burgers came out crazy fast... Literally in like ten minutes. We both got the burger that Red Coat is famous for and it was... okay. The sauce they use is good but overall the burger itself is overpriced, at $12.50 each. We also got the fried mushrooms to share, at $7, and those were delicious, mostly because of the (maybe homemade?) ranch dipping sauce. It also came with some sort of cocktail sauce. For two burgers, the fried mushrooms, 2 waters, and tip, it was about $41, which for me is rather pricey. So I probably won't be back soon, but the patio we sat on was nice. read more

I have lived in West Bloomfield for a year now, have driven by this location several times, and finally came in. Tip: they do accept call aheads, make sure to call ahead before coming on a Friday night! They get packed. Ordered was the scotch egg, blackened tenderloin tips, Reuben, and the original redcoat burger. -The scotch egg was decent my boyfriend said, but wouldn't order it again. He said the fried sausage was a little over cooked. -The tenderloin tips of course are always a crowd pleaser. -the Reuben was delicious and the corned beef inside tasted like Wigleys, which is superb. -the burger was yummy but was just missing something that I can't put my finger on. Fries on the side are an additional $6 but they are definitely shareable between 2-3 people. I would come back for lunch when it's slower, since our server was pretty inattentive and took 15 minutes just to get a bottle of beer and three waters and didn't come around to clear off plates, etc. read more

We got calamari as an appetizer, it was good but definitely did not have enough calamari in it. They overloaded it with banana peppers and red peppers, which were a good garnishment, but didn't compensate for the lack of actual calamari. Though the calamari was some of the best we've ever had. I got a chicken Caesar salad. It was good, not worth $20 though. My boyfriend says he's made better chicken in an air fryer, I don't know if he's telling the truth or not. My boyfriend ordered the battered shrimp with fries. It was $25 and came with five pieces of shrimp. That's atrocious, bro. $5 a piece. The shrimp tasted good, he says. The fries were warm and crunchy. I enjoyed them. The best part of the meal was the dessert. The cookie and ice cream sandwich was very enjoyable. The ice cream was rich and the cookies were soft. Ambiance: dimmer lights, but tables close together; you can sit at bar, but every time someone comes in, you freeze. Food: very good Value: this is where they get dinged. $40 for Piedmontese cheese burger + fries + a beer. That is getting really outrageous. You could have a 4 star dinner for that price.
