She's very detailed and takes her time during the first fitting, that way she gets it just right for the next time you see her. She got my dress done (hemmed at the bottom, shortened the slit in the front, AND added custom sleeves draping along the arms) within 3 weeks. I'm somewhat new to the area. Several people -- including some a very well regarded menswear shops -- recommended this place word of mouth when I asked around. I tried get alterations to sleeves on overcoat and was basically shooed out the door and told to make an appointment. This was after showing up three times prior with the coat expecting someone to be there based on their posted hours, only to find the place closed. This happened on THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. Despite the posted hours, It's kind of a crapshoot as to if/when this place will actually be open for business. You can drop off dry cleaning at the kiosk anytime, but getting alterations or anything where you need to speak with someone is a whole ordeal which apparently needs to be carefully scheduled. I ended up just going to a place called Alberts instead -- who took care of me right away. It took less time to walk in, explain what I wanted, get measured and hand off the coat at Albert's than it did to just show up wait around and then be scolded by the woman at A&M. This place seems to have a good reputation for quality work based on word of mouth recommendations, however because of the way this place is run, it makes of very difficult to use their services. read more

I have been a customer of Helen's for many years and as a petite woman with very specific tastes, I so appreciate Helen's attention to detail, wisdom, and above all, her very high quality work. Whether it's fixing coat sleeves, hemming pants, adding jacket liners, or customizing a dress, Helen is able to do it all, and always within a very reasonable timeframe. This review is very overdue, as I was reminded of during a recent experience where I dropped off a piece on short-notice, and even though she was very busy, she made sure the piece was ready by my travel departure date, and the craftsmanship was impeccable. True life: I love to shop. I love to buy interesting things. This review is overdue, but a while back, my favorite tunic formulated a hole under the arm. It was a blend of several fabrics and I knew it would be hard to fix. I was ready for heartbreak. I know it's weird to be so attached to a tunic, but this one really was my favorite. When I brought it in, the sewing/alternations gal barely batted a lash. She was really helpful, had me try it on and took measurements. I was in-and-out fairly quickly. God, I feel awful I can't remember the name of the gal who helped me, but she was great. She fixed it to the best of her ability with a quick turn-around. When it came back to me in such highly wearable shape (albeit not perfect considering the difficulty of the design), I nearly cried! It's so clear to me that A&M Tailoring knows what they are doing. Poor service had to wait over a week for pants to get done and went back twice was told stories after 45 minutes pants went find in a car under the driver seat. I've only ever left a couple of reviews in my life. I've only ever felt compelled to leave a negative review a couple of times for a business. I don't like harming small businesses. In the extremely rare event I'm not satisfied with a service, I hope that when I speak up about it, the issue will be addressed kindly, and I'm able to reach some kind of compromise with the business. This wasn't possible with this company. I used the service for tailoring and cleaning. The tailoring job was not professional. I accepted the turn-around time for one week. I did not carefully inspect my garments before leaving which is my mistake, but I did put them into a clean, brand-new canvas dress bag before exiting. The two items that were tailored were not done well, which was surprising based on the positive reviews. I drove out of my way to use this service specifically for the positive reviews that I'm now confused by because the skirt appeared to be quickly hand-stitched in a way that I could have done myself. It looked worse, not better. That was the first thing I brought to their attention. My husband works in Solon, so I had him stop by after work with my garments because I'm a mother of two. They did agree the skirt was not right and repaired it on the spot, but they seemed annoyed to do so, and were pretty rude to my kind husband. When taking my items out of the dress bag at home, I noticed several brown spots on the cleaner's bag. My garments are valuable, and I'm extremely meticulous so I was upset to see that, especially because this isn't a budget cleaner and they advertise as caring for valuable, expensive clothing with "meticulous care." I will also note the garments hadn't really been cleaned any better than a budget cleaner. My khaki jacket still had light spots that most likely could have been lifted by a skilled spot treatment. The situation was unfortunately escalated by the fact that they were not helpful and were dismissive of my complaints. They argued with me and my husband about the bag, which is a deal breaker for me when using an expensive service for my valuables. An acknowledgment of the issue, and a positive affirmation that they would look into the matter, and address it was all that was necessary from them. I would have really appreciated a partial refund for my time, and my expense of over $60, but I would have been negotiable if they had been kind. They would not notify Rite Cleaners, and they wanted me to call them instead. That is not professional. It's their service. It's not separate from what they do. They are a tailor and cleaning service. In a follow-up, the owner chose to again not address the actual real issues, but was instead extremely defensive and has resorted to personal attacks against me and my business suggesting I use "blackmail," cheat or lie to save money. That is the furthest thing from the truth. I love supporting small local businesses with my hard earned money. I would never and have never blackmailed anyone. Those kinds of lies and false characterization of a person are very hurtful and totally unnecessary. Also, I have a good relationship with the other cleaner I reviewed. They worked with me to resolve the issue with respect. I now take my stuff there all the time. My honest assessment remains: The service was slow, unprofessional, had to be re-done again, wasting my time. I paid a premium for the careful care of my garments which resulted in them being sent home in a bag with some soiling on it. I was rightfully dissatisfied. They disagreed, and hung up on me, and wouldn't hear any of it. read more

Terrible service!!! I called and scheduled an apt to have a bridesmaid dress altered. I explained what was needed on the dress over the phone. I showed up for my apt ( 5 min early). I was told I was too early and I needed to wait. 15 min later a woman came and told me to go change into my dress in the fitting room. Then she told me she wasn't the seamstress but she would try to pin my dress. When I showed her what needed done she said, no sorry I can't do that, you will ha e to come back another day. I explained I made arrangement, drove over 30 min to get here and I had a scheduled apt. She then told me too bad. I was appalled. read more

I've brought all manner of alterations to A & M for years now, and without exception, each and every time I'm thrilled with the results. I'm so happy that I've found a tailor with imagination and creative problem-solving spirit to make vintage clothes I've found fit me better, to shorten tops that are too flowy, to add adornemts and ribbons to belts and pants to make them unique pieces of wearable art. I've had Helen alter dresses, jackets, coats and pants for me and every member of my family. She is a pleasure to work with and I appreciate the new life she has brought to some of my older clothes that I can no longer wear. Until the last few years I took all my alterations to a friend of my mom who makes bridesmaids' dresses in her spare time - so I could, without question, trust anything she altered to come back fitting me perfectly. Now, living on the other side of town, I had a Burberry and a Cinzia Rocca coat which I purchased on sale, but both were nearly a size too big. The wrap coat looked like an over sized bathrobe on me. I put off having both coats tailored for months because I simply did not know a tailor that I felt confident with. I called A & M Tailoring and spoke to Helen. After she answered some questions, I went to A & M, tried them on and she pinned both so we could agree on what I wanted and what could be done. The price was not cheap, but I was more concerned with the coats looking as if they fit me well. In less than a week I picked up the coats and opted to try them on a home rather than at the shop. I can say that when I tried them on I was floored - completely blown away - both fit like they were tailor-made for me! I am so impressed with this little shop and the work they do. I have two coats, with linings, basically remade I paid $160.00 (I was given an "estimate" before leaving the coats). I feel this was very reasonable for the work. Helen was very, very sweet and easy to work with. If you are looking for a tailor, I would recommend A & M without hesitation. read more
