I'm very disappointed with the behavior of an A&K Landscaping employee during their recent maintenance work at a neighboring apartment building. On Tuesday, September 23rd, an A&K employee trimmed a large portion of an avocado tree on my property that overhangs into the apartment's yard. While I completely understand and have no issue with trimming branches that extend beyond the shared fence line, what happened afterward was unacceptable. The employee dumped all of the tree trimmings--equivalent to a full pickup truck load--onto my side of the fence without asking or informing me. When I approached him to ask if he was planning to clean up the mess, his response was dismissive and unprofessional. He said something like, "No, it's your tree and it's making a lot of leaves to clean up," as if that justified dumping a huge amount of debris onto my property. I had to explain to him that you can't cut down someone else's tree and then leave the mess behind for the property owner to deal with. Only after I moved the debris back on their side and a lot of back and forth did he finally decide to take the trimmings and haul them away on their truck. To make matters worse, I immediately left a voicemail and sent a text to the company's owner, Alika Peterson, asking for a call back to discuss the situation. I called again later the same day and followed up the next day as well. As of now, I have not received any response from Mr. Peterson, which only adds to the frustration and unprofessionalism of this experience. I was appalled by this blatant lack of respect for my property and their apparent attempt to get away with it simply because they thought no one was home at 9 a.m. If the tree had been a genuine nuisance, I would have been more than willing to work with the property owner to resolve it. However, it is not the decision of an A&K employee to make, nor is it acceptable for them to dispose of debris in this manner. I hope A&K Landscaping reconsiders how they train their employees on handling these kinds of situations and improves their responsiveness to customer concerns. read more

I cannot recommend this team enough! My side yard was an eye-sore from years of neglect by previous owners. It needed to be completely cleaned out, leveled and then transformed. They took my initial ideas and enhanced them with the lava rock path, back bed and even placed my huge blue pot in the right spot to highlight aesthetic purpose and balance the area. The attention to detail was second to none as I watched them move lava rocks an inch this way or swap them out to ensure the visual flow as well as functional path were right. I don't think I've smiled so much in the past 24 hours watching them do the work and now enjoying the result. Back in December 2020, during the pandemic, we decided to revamp our entire yard. I contacted many landscaping companies. In terms of how A&K Landscape compared, the quote was very competitive and reasonable, considering the scope of the work. Kainoa & Alika came out to look things over. They were very professional and gave good advice. Alika drew up a design which was awesome - a drawing showing what was going to be planted in each area. We needed our old weed infested lawn torn out and replaced with sod. Our existing Garden beds (5) needed to be redone. We also decided to go with a irrigation system, so that the previous problems we had with our yard did not occur again - i.e. weeds invading everywhere due to lack of watering existing plants/grass. In addition to that, we went with a small section of artificial grass in our back yard Once they started it was fast! Before long, our ugly yard took on designer-yard look. I'm especially happy with the WiFi enabled irrigation system that is programmable! We went with their maintenance program and thus far, the upkeep has been very good. We had a very great experience contracting A & K. We had grass and sprinklers installed in our backyard and some repairs to a sprinkler system that was installed by our previous contractor. A & K also referred us to a Mason who rebuilt our retaining wall. We worked directly with Kainoa and the whole process was very smooth and professional. Kainoa and his team worked quickly and the process or grading our backyard, installing sprinklers and grass took 3 days (a job our previous contractor quoted 2 weeks to complete). We are very happy with the quality of the job. There are a lot of contractors listed on Yelp that have good reviews but do not follow up and do not take pride in their work. We unfortunately worked with two of those before finding A & K and will only work with A & K for future projects. Received a response from Kainoa (co-owner) in less than 1-hour. Kainoa was 15-minutes early to our scheduled meeting to walk the property, and he provided a very competitive quote within 24-hours. The other companies I contacted either didn't respond to my phone calls/e-mails, never provided a quote, or if they did provide a quote, it was much higher than A & K. A & K completed the aforementioned projects on time and on budget and were extremely easy to work with. We hired this company to maintain our yard. They sent over ONE guy to do the work, and he did the worst job we have ever seen. He left grass clippings everywhere and plant trimmings inside the beds and spread on the lawn. His truck even leaked oil on our drive-way as well. When all of this was brought to the owner's attention, he said he would come back to take care of the mess.....which he never did. A week later, after repeated attempts to call and email them, he emailed us that they would no longer be maintaining our yard because "his crew is incapable of maintaining your property". The word "incapable" shocked and surprised us. This is their BUSINESS!! Imagine being employed by these guys and reading that their bosses feel that they are "incapable" of doing a simple maintenance job.... After further investigation, we discovered that they are not even licensed landscapers. 'Could that be why they are "incapable"? We kept trying to reach them to come over to talk about the matter so we could resolve it. They had made such a mess of our yard, and the fact that they wouldn't even make an attempt to discuss and remedy the situation is the most unbelievable part.. in our opinion this is completely unprofessional behavior for a small business, especially here in Kailua. I cannot speak highly enough of the service A & K Landscape provides. We previously were with a well known landscaper on Oahu, and while the employees were polite and respectful, the service they provided was mediocre at best. We had constant problems with weeds and pests in the shrubbery, as well as less than perfect lawn care. I had admired a home down the street that looked beautiful and noticed A & K working on the yard. My husband and I arranged a meeting with the owners, who also provide most of the service. Long story short, we hired them and have been more than pleased. Our beds and shrubs and lawn look beautiful and are very well maintained. We are so happy to have called them and only wish we had found them sooner! Although we were not in need, they also provide landscape design and installation. The landscape I admired down the street was designed and installed by A & K and speaks to their abilities. I am giving three stars because someone did come to my house to give me an estimate on work I needed done but we never received those estimates and so, of course, we were not able to even consider using them without follow-up communication; not even to say they could not do the work. I will also add that so many companies use the word "landscape" but I'm not sure how many are actually qualified. A Kailua property manager recommended this firm. Alika and Kainoa did a great job on our house. Alika came up with a practical and cost-effective plan for a drainage system. Kainoa designed and handled the sprinkler system. A&K also leveled the front yard, removed the old grass, added topsoil and installed a new lawn by hydroseed procedure. They have a crew and Kainoa and Alika are right next to them working along. They planned and managed the project very well. From start to finish, the entire project took about 7 weekdays. - We had at least 5 landscapers come on site to give us their ideas for addressing our requirements. None of them gave us confidence that they had experience in setting up an effective drainage system or their estimates were out of the ballpark. Their crew and their subcontractors did an excellent job. - A&K worked with us on our budget. There was never any pressure when we reduced the scope of any line item. Once the project started, any changes we added from the original scope were billed reasonably. - It was a very pleasant experience having A&K Landscaping handle our project. I deal with a lot of seasoned contractors and Alika and Kainoa were far more professional, prompt and courteous than any other contractor (painter, installer, gutter, PV...you name it ) I've dealt with.
