I first met Stu Rinehart in 2017 when we did a major landscaping project that involved repaving walkways, replacing old fencing, adding new fencing and gates, as well as some lawn and shrubbery work. One of the things left undone was replacing a high maintenance, always thirsty backyard lawn. I let the Oahu drought of 2022 take it out. In early 2023 I took bids to replace it, add topsoil and compost to gardens, and some minor touch-up to previous, 5-year-old work. By far, Aloha Aina Landscaping's proposal was the most comprehensive, detailed, and best cost value, fitting exactly what I wanted to do -- roll El Toro sod in place of what was there, and fill in gardens with a mixture of top soil and clean compost, to which Stu added some beautiful mulch. When work started I was very impressed how project manager Nainoa and and team lead Patrick conducted the work. Patrick and his team were efficient, effective, and a joy to work with, going above and beyond, despite the bad weather at end. After 8 weeks of growth and cutting, they came back to level the sod's peaks and valleys with a sand/compost mix, which rapidly grew back in. They assured any work debris or spilled dirt was cleaned up each day, pressure washing sidewalks and the driveway at completion. Our back yard is again a source of pride, two paws up from our pup. I am very grateful to the wonderful folks at Aloha Aina Landscaping.

This is an updated review from January 2023. It has been 9 months since drains and turf were installed and we have had time to see if drains worked after heavy rains. The great news is: the drains held up and we haven't experienced flooding or pooling in our backyard since installation-we did not have to bring out the sump pump once to redirect accumulated water! What a relief as we dealt with this nightmare for so long and went through multiple contractors until we felt like we found the best solution with Aloha'Aina. Thank you Stu for brainstorming and coming up with the best idea to solve our drainage problem. Plus he is always a phone call away if we have questions or need advice. His crew was great too and any issues that came up along the way were quickly resolved. We feel like they stand by their work and ultimately want their customers to be happy. We can finally enjoy our patio and the dogs love running on their new turf too! We would recommend Aloha'Aina landscaping and hire them again for future work.

Just wanted to acknowledge and share positive feedback for Dan the operations manager and Dionel the foreman on my recent landscaping job. It was a pleasure working with them. I appreciated their flexibility in trying to achieve the best design of my view of what I had in mind. Also Dan was flexible in finding the plants I wanted to use even though their nursery did not have all the plants that I wanted . They reached out to other outlets to get some of the plants. Dionel was very positive and brought ten years of experience to the job. I appreciated his can do attitude and his desire to share what he knew and create something special. Now its up to me to take care of the plants and assist them to survive.

We interviewed a number of landscape contractors to help us turn our dismal townhouse backyard into our vision of an inviting tropical rock garden. Our yard is on a golf course, so we wanted something that would add visual interest to complement the expanse of golf green in the background. From our first contact, Stuart was responsive, interested in our ideas, accommodating to our aesthetic and budgetary needs, and a person whose passion for his work was evident. After meeting with him a couple of times, it was clear that Aloha Aina was our top choice. We are so grateful to have found them. Stuart's team is very professional, incredibly hard working, knowledgeable, and neat. They have great attention to detail. Working on a yard right on a golf course presents logistical issues. They managed these challenges so well, that our property manager is excited to refer them to other homeowners. Stuart worked with us in selecting the most appropriate plant material for the different areas of the garden, walking us through his beautiful farm and explaining the pros and cons of the different choices. He is very patient; I ask lots of questions! Ultimately, Aloha Aina delivered a finished project that we will enjoy for years to come. We could not be more satisfied with our lovely new garden. The photos don't do it justice! Thank you Stu, and your whole amazing team. We are grateful.

Stewart and his team did an amazing job! They delivered everything we asked for. The consultation was great. Stewart himself came out and listened to our concerns and needs. Stewart gave his professional opinion which in the end saved us thousands of dollars. His team was efficient and able to get the job done in a timely matter. They turned our overgrown chaotic yard into one of elegance and sophistication. It was refreshing to see a business be that's trying to be cost effective instead of just taking our money because that's what we WANTED but not what we NEEDED. I really would like to give Aloha Aina a five star rating but the communication between client and business could use some improvement. We requested a project during the holidays. Stewart had planned to start and finish the project right after Christmas but New Years came and went and still no start. Understandably it's the holidays so that didn't bother too much. Once the project was completed I had reached out to Stewart for continued maintenance and was told a quote would be made but never received anything. We ended up deciding to just maintain the yard ourselves. Other than that our yard is beautiful and exactly how we envisioned it.

Excellent selection of plants! Beautiful location and very well organized! Stew and his wife Kate were very helpful & true professionals! Our family picked up a couple of citrus trees like lemon, tangerine, ginger and avocado trees that were already fruiting/flowering! Great option if you were thinking about preparing especially during this quarantine! Happy to support local business and farmers!

He quoted me $3000 a month as a "new" customer! I couldn't believe anyone would pay that for a 6200 square foot lot, Mulkern had serviced the yard for the realtor while selling the property; grass was burned, trees a mess, and basically only serviced by blowers according to all the neighbors who had witnessed Mulkern employees.

Both Kevin and Susan Mulkern really listened to our wishes, but also provided suggestions and insights from their years of experience. It was a continual negotiation of ideas (throughout the process, they never stopped listening to our ideas or confirming that we were happy with what was being done). As a result, we are elated with how our yard looks and continues to evolve. And so far, it has been taking us around 2-4 person-hours per week for the two of us to keep it maintained. For us, this is very doable, and we're finding that, because the yard looks so great, it's enjoyable as well. Kevin's sense of humor is from left field (or perhaps from outside the stadium altogether), so we laughed a lot and enjoyed being kept on our toes to get one of his asides. This made the process fun. Another thing we really appreciated about Kevin was his respect and appreciation for his employees. Not a day passed without him telling them "Thank you" for doing tasks right or for asking questions to confirm that they knew what to do. The fact that he cares enough about his employees to let them know that he appreciates them is yet another reflection on the professionalism of Mulkern Landscaping. He was also very creative about ways to save us money, including using existing plugs of grass to re-establish the lawn. The plugs looked to us like little chunks of dead grass, and we could not imagine that they would ever turn green, let alone fill out the whole lawn area, but it has only been a few months and we now have a full and beautiful lawn! Likewise, some of the plants were "babies" when planted (another money-saver), but they are growing taller and filling out really well. Kevin also went beyond the call of duty. For example, he noticed that one of the neighbor's trees was leaning well over into our space and shedding leaves and twigs onto our roof (up to that point we were regularly pruning back the tree on our side of the fence). He asked my permission to talk with the neighbor about it, and found out that the neighbor wouldn't mind having the tree removed but didn't want to pay to have it done. Kevin had his crew remove the tree, at no extra cost to us and at no charge to the neighbor. Even though the work (and contract) ended, Kevin still stops by from time to time to make sure everything looks good and to see if we have any new questions or concerns. In short, I enthusiastically recommend Mulkern Landscaping & Nursery.

The gentlemen that was there helped us pick it out and was very clear on the fact that we didn't want the smaller more common flower tree. We paid a pretty penny extra for this rare variety. I called the nursery and the guy I spoke too wasn't even remotely apologetic nor did he give any kind of option to remedy the problem. Just kept saying "I don't know, I don't know." And I'm like no I'm trying to tell you you guys sold us the wrong puakenikeni and you should make good bc we give you lots of business. I am a frequent plant nursery shopper. We landscaped and installed an irrigation system for our entire backyard and purchased all our plants and trees from nurseries in Waimanalo. I put my trust in the people who work at the nurseries that they are knowledgable and trustworthy when we ask them to pull plants for us. I have had this problem before with another nursery when they were supposed to pull 5 of the same heliconia variety and we ended up with 4 different types of heliconia, but when I called them and showed pictures they were so apologetic and credited us for new plants and we were able to get new ones. I am very disappointed in Akamai Nursery and hoped they would make good on their mistake, but nope. We have spent almost $1000 there and going forward I will take my business elsewhere.
