I had a couple of stops in recently at A-Abbott Locksmith.... I really wanted to find a brick and mortar locksmith....there are so few out there as most are mobile services now. My first stop I loved that as soon as I walked in it had the small business personalized touch feel....Chuy was very helpful from the minute I walked in to have a backup up key fob programmed. They had competitive pricing. Another place that tried to do it had issues and couldn't program my key fob.....no problem for Chuy and A-Abbot Locksmith! On another issue, Jim helped me take care of a lady who was locked out of here house....he dealt with her kindly as she was upset she was locked out and had to incur the cost to get in her house. So I came by to get a spare key made for my car. I asked how much to make a copy. The man says $49. I told him the machine at the local Ralph's market only charges $39. He told me he would have to check it out. So I showed him the picture as proof. Now, if he would have matched the price, I would have bought 2. Since there was no offer I went to a different Ralph's to use the kiosk. This new location quoted me $35. So I entered my info to have the key made. Before finalizing the order I backed out as if to cancel the order. To keep me as a customer, the machine offered me a 25% discount. The machine knows GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. So I added a second key. Big thank you to A-Abbot, I have a few older style vehicles and boats with old keys from the 70's and 80's. I was on the road in Cypress, Los Alamitos and Long Beach when I needed a 1971 VW key copied. I went to literally 10 key stores and not one could copy the key. I had purchased an EMTEC keypad deadbolt lock from A-Abbot about three years ago. The electronic lock would only work intermittently but the warranty had expired. I took the lock in and a very pleasant young man named Jesus gladly inspected the lock, took it completely apart, looked for broken parts and reassembled it for me to try again (all at no charge). The lock eventually stopped working again and when I went back to A-Abbot, another locksmith named Justin, inspected the lock, determined that it was a mechanical and not and electronics issue (EMTEC has a lifetime warranty on the mechanical parts) and talked to the EMTEC distributor to give me a new lock. Jim was very helpful and friendly while cuttting some Qwikset keys for me. Most hardware stores won't cut outside blanks any longer (out of fear of liability and need to replace them if damaged), but Jim was a pro and was careful not to damage the decorative finish on the keys without me having to mention it. Great service - not as cheap as one of those automated key machines, but I'm happy to pay for their expertise. Note that the door faces Katella, and you should park in the pet store parking lot or you might end up going through their employee entrance by accident like I did. Luckily they were cool. I want to start out this review by telling you a little about me, so that the context makes more sense. I grew up in Southern California - Dana Point - and during my youth we had things like auto shop, wood shop, metal shop and other shop activities in school that encouraged sweat equity as a learning experience. Although were I grew up was rather affluent, having Scottish in my genes meant that we saved money. So I learned quite a bit about how mechanics worked, how things functioned around the house, and how to un-screwup something I'd previously ... screwed. So changing a lock isn't a big deal. Neither is rekeying one. Rekeying six well-worn 10-year old commercial locks so that they work with a new key while continuing to work with a master key seemed a bit above my pay grade. I could certainly take them out ... but the whole rekeying thing made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I've taken locks to locksmith shops before. I've met the edgy fellows with metal burr etched dirty hands that smell of old tri-flow oil and teflon ... and even older sweat. You know; the guys who give you a price based on the clothes you're wearing measured against the desperation you exude because you don't know anything about the dark arts and magic of locksmithery. So I was prepared for what to expect when I went to head over to this shop that opened unusually early for a trade (8:30am). This store is COMPLETELY the opposite of any other locksmith that I've ever been to. The store was neat, tidy, well laid out with products, swept floors, and an unexpectedly professional attitude and veneer. Jim Thorpe was the gentleman who helped me out. I have NEVER met someone who knows as much about locks and who is willing to share his knowledge so that I felt comfortable and reassured that the job would be done right. I gave him the six locks (in individual baggies numbers so I remembered where I got them from). He checked them all out in front of me, jumped on his computer after I gave him the address where the locks were from and said they'd been to that address before, and even cut a new master key from their records to make sure that it worked as well as the older master I included with the old locks. The new one worked WAY better. He gave be a quote - in writing - as well as a time that the locks would be done by THAT DAY! I gave him the locks and went off to attend to the rest of my adventures for that morning. A short while later - and well before the promised time - Jim gave me a call, and said that the locks were done and I could head over to pick them all up. I was shocked! When I got back to the busy store, Jim had my order ready, remembered me, and then launched into an explanation of what he'd done. He explained about the locks (they were worn, and could do with a full servicing at some point), the new keys, and the new master he cut. He even managed to get the locks back in the original baggies instead of mixing them all up. THAT is attention to detail! I got back to the building, installed the new locks, and they work perfectly! The new master works on the various locks in the building, and I am absolutely THRILLED with the whole process. I HIGHLY recommend A-Abbot Locksmith for all your key needs. These guys are professional, quick, and they get the job done right the first time. If you get a chance, talk with Jim; he is not only knowledgeable, but he is willing to share that knowledge so that you know exactly what you're getting! read more
