I hired these guys to come clean the windows at my mom's house in the Berkeley Hills. It's a large house (5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms) with a LOT of windows, including some very large windows, a bay window, French doors, sliding windows, sliding doors, windows set back from the roof, windows I'd forgotten even existed (even though I grew up that house!), and the windows had not been cleaned in quite some time and really needed it. A team of two guys (I think it was Ivan and Juan) arrived promptly, and immediately set to work. After a bit the owner, Stuart, showed up to help and also worked for about an hour himself. Ivan and Juan were terrific. They worked extremely hard, washing and re-washing each pane, meticulously chipping off bits of dirt with a razor-blade, taking the sliding windows and doors off their frames to clean them better, cleaning the channels which had gotten really dirty, etc etc. As I said, the windows had not been cleaned in quite some time so it really was a lot of work. I was super impressed by how hard they worked, for hours on end, and how they were able to reach and manage each of the windows. I was also really impressed with how respectful and polite Ivan and Juan were to my elderly mom. It really made a difference. Stuart is very reasonable and responsive to anything I asked. It was a bit complicated to set up because I live in L.A. and was flying up to oversee this (as well as housecleaners who I'd hired at the same time). At first I was a bit taken aback at the price they quoted ($450) but after I saw how hard and how long they worked, and how excellent their work was, I felt it was more than fair. My house is surrounded by trees and I have a number of second floor gutters that are hard for me to reach, and last week's rains were a wake up call that I really need to pay attention to keeping my gutters clean. I called A-1 on Tuesday and got a Saturday morning appointment. He arrived promptly at 9am and quickly did a walk around with me so that could show him my areas of concern and the gutters that I had already cleaned. He then went straight to work, cleaning gutters and downspouts. I appreciated that he cleaned a few windows that got splashed by the hose he was using for the cleaning. He estimated that it would take no more than 3 hours, and that was pretty accurate...2.5 hours start to finish. $150 total was an acceptable price for this service, and I very much appreciated that there were no crooked attempts to upsell me to other services or to scare me into gutter replacement. I was very pleased with A-1; from estimate through finish of job, they were professional, courteous and a pleasure to work with. They did upsell me when they were here to include some outdoor plexi that runs around two decks...and thank goodness they did. For the first time in years, we have an unimpeded view of the bay. Our windows have NEVER been this clean, and they took the time to point out scratches and other defects they couldn't tackle before they touched a window - which I appreciated. They also put in extra elbow grease on the outdoor glass and even removed paint that had probably been on there for multiple "professional" cleanings in the past. Friendly, Professional, Cost effective. $60/hr for cleaning gutters. $165 at another place that didn't specialize in gutters. Juan came out and he was very polite, professional and thorough. Nailed my gutters down for me since they were loose. He also took videos of what was blocking my gutters to show me since I had to run errands. Took about 2 1/2 hours so thought the cost would be $150, but was charged $165. Not that big of a deal since they did such a great job. I had a multi part project that required a skilled and open minded handyman, but after being turned down or ignored by others, I called Stewart at A1 to get at least one job done. As it turns out his company was able to do all the work I needed and was cheaper than a handful of shady characters who gave me estimates. I needed my house powerwashed, light carpentry, gutter cleaning and some painting. Ironically NONE of them involved washing windows! Stewart had very excellent communication and I felt his prices were fair. He also seems to be a straightforward and honest individual. Being a cheap guy I didn't really want to at first - but I also ended up having my windows cleaned, and as a bachelor, I cannot remember the last time I could see the outside so clearly : ) What a surprising treat. They even cleaned my skylight which was dirty and had cobwebs from 10 years of neglect. When they were done, I wanted to get on my hands and knees and cry with joy. It is about 8 years since my last review. When I learned that they also do deck maintenance, I was so happy, because I have a two-story redwood deck that really needed to have a new coat of stain and sealant. In addition, this two-story deck has lots of railing and, consequently, lots of little fence-like vertical posts that support the railing. A1 power-washed, sanded, re-stained and re-sealed everything except the little vertical posts for $5675, which was on par with what I was expecting to pay (other quotes I got 2-3 years ago were in the $5-6K range). Everything went smoothly, which I really appreciate - no missed appointments, no late arrivals, no last-minute rescheduling, no mistakes or oversights on the written estimate. I called in early March 2021 to schedule an estimate. Stuart, the owner, met with me in about a week and delivered a written estimate within a day. We scheduled the job to occur about six weeks later, and it went off exactly as I was told it would, thanks to Eliseo who actually did the work. I would highly recommend A1. They are skilled, reliable and fairly priced. I have worked with other businesses that don't have those qualities. I have used this service for my business and continue to do so. I couldn't be more pleased. Though I tried to clean my large storefront windows myself I just never achieved the quality I wanted. And it doesn't matter how clean the inside of your business is if the first thing your customers see is dingy streaked windows. Although several attempts were made to remove black graffitti on my brick building and I paid $100. for a gallon of a product that was supposed to do the trick but didn't, I must say that Stuart is an honest man, not charging me for a job that turned out to be impossible. I called on Friday, Feb. 21st for a gutter cleaning. They looked at my house on Google maps and were able to schedule an appointment for the very next day. They estimated it would take ~2 hours based upon the roof image from Google. Their price was better than half of the first estimate I received, which was a flat rate of $285 - $60/hr for the first two hours and then $50/hr thereafter. Edwin was the employee who showed up at my door 5 minutes early. 1.5 hours later he was finished. He tested the gutters and showed me that there were no obstructions anymore. The total cost came to $90 to clean the gutters of our two story house. I wound up paying for two hours (instead of 1.5) because I thought the service was so good. If you need your gutters cleaned, call A-1. If you are hesitant because of some of the other reviews (I was too) ask for Edwin. I couldn't be more pleased with their service and I applaud them for not trying to price gouge customers like one of their competitors in Berkeley. read more

They submitted an estimate for the job which was almost $300 less than another well-reviewed company's estimate. Two guys came within a week and spent 3 hours working on our house, and it looked spectacular when they were finished. It's unfortunate that A-1 has a difficult time returning calls to schedule appointments. I have called 3 times this week, left a message with my name, my address, option to schedule any time within the month and I have yet to receive a return call. The same situation happened the last time I tried to schedule. The crew is really nice and efficient when you can finally get an appointment but it takes too many cycles to schedule. Every time I use a service, the neighbors ask me for my contacts. I will be researching other options that take fewer calls to schedule. read more
