I recently had lunch at 99 in Topsham. Service was good, but not exceptional, as was the ambiance. Food was good but a burger is a burger no matter how you slice it, and it left me with the thought, "what makes a cheeseburger worth $20? Not comparing ambiance, service or food taste, but a BK Whopper Wednesday is $4.00. Is 99's burger FIVE TIMES BETTER? Maybe I'm old, and I don't get out much, but $20 for a burger seems outrageous, especially since Applebee's burger is $10. read more

My wife and I dined at this restaurant recently, primarily out of convenience, though the fairly full parking lot suggested it might be a popular spot. Between the two of us, we ordered two appetizers, two entrées, and three beverages. Appetizers We started with the Boom Boom Shrimp and the potato skins. The Boom Boom Shrimp was decent--pleasantly sweet with a mild hint of spice--but ultimately unremarkable. The potato skins, however, were excellent and easily the standout item of the meal. They were well prepared, flavorful, and genuinely enjoyable. In fact, they may be my favorite item on the menu. It's also worth noting that potato skins seem surprisingly rare on menus these days, which made them feel like a bit of a novelty. If we were to return, the potato skins would likely be the primary reason. Drinks My wife ordered a strawberry lemonade, which was fine but nothing memorable. I had a Diet Coke and a strawberry daiquiri. The Diet Coke was exactly what you'd expect. The strawberry daiquiri, however, was a disappointment. The portion size was shockingly small--more like a sampler than a full cocktail--despite being priced comparably to daiquiris at similar chain restaurants. At places like Applebee's, you typically receive a generously sized drink served in a goblet or hurricane glass. Here, it came in a small mug that felt disproportionate to the price. That's a choice I wouldn't make again. Entrées For our main courses, my wife ordered the teriyaki chicken with a side of clam chowder, both of which she enjoyed. Unfortunately, my entrée--the baked haddock--was where the meal truly fell apart. This was, without exaggeration, the worst baked haddock I have ever been served. The fish had virtually no flavor beyond severely burnt breadcrumbs. The topping was sparse, lacked butter or seasoning, and tasted as though it had been cooked at far too high a temperature. The result was a dry, rubbery texture that made the dish genuinely inedible. At nearly $20, it felt like a complete waste and significantly detracted from the overall dining experience. Overall Impression While there were a few bright spots--most notably the potato skins--the baked haddock left such a negative impression that it seriously impacts my likelihood of returning. If we do come back at some point, I'll be sticking to the potato skins. read more

Visited 99 Restaurants for an early dinner. This place is usually very busy, but we only had to wait 10 minutes for a table. Our server was courteous and friendly. 99 handles food allergens so well that I feel other chains could learn from them. Their website offers an option to select multiple allergens (wheat, dairy, fish, etc) and will give you a list of safe foods. The menu also indicates gluten-free dishes. No issues with cross-contamination for us, either. The food is very good, although I'm puzzled that a steakhouse doesn't serve baked potatoes. Also, skip the refresher drinks which are a meager amount of fruit puree with soda water on top - there's nowhere near enough fruit puree, so you're basically buying expensive soda water. I liked the broiled sirloin tips so much that I really wish I lived near a 99 to get them more often. read more

For a chain restaurant it has surprisingly good food & service. Prices are going rate.

Average food, great customer service. I got the cod BLT, my wife got the mac and cheese, my sister in law got the fish tacos, and we got a boneless wings app. I also got a sangarita and a margarita. None of these things was really that good or bad. My sister in law didn't like her fish tacos (flavorless) and complained to management, which took them off the check and comped a lobster mac and cheese with fries as a substitute. We also initially received the wrong appetizer, we had ordered only the wings but they gave us potato skins as well. We sent that appetizer back and got the correct thing, so they corrected it on the check at the end. Aside from the tacos, everything else is all so pretty bland and unremarkable to be honest. I was particularly unimpressed with the sangarita, which tasted just like sangria, though with a lot less actual fruit than you would expect. We ended up sitting at the bar. Beer selection was ok. It was 90% nation wide brands like coors and bud.. Though they did have Atlantic which surprised me. Our food was ok.. Nothing to brag about.. Though probably cooked better than what i could. The bartender/server just seemed to be not having it today.. which i get but really didn't add to the experience without me thinking of the movie Waiting periodically during our visit. Overall, meh. Everyone I know from New England loves this place! When I went for my first time last week I wasn't blown away by my experience. It reminded me of a Chili's? Or TGI Fridays. The place was a bar like setting. We went in and it was a large bar with a bunch of TV's. They give you popcorn while you wait for your food. I really liked that. I ordered a Honey mustard chicken salad. My lettuce wasn't super fresh. The pits bread was hard and tasted stale. My chicken was way overfried. It tasted like it was chicken they fried earlier, but since they had an order for chicken, they just refried it to heat it up. My boyfriends fries were pretty good though. Hey maybe I caught them on a bad day or off-hour. It wasn't terrible. Our server was nice, I just wasn't too impressed. It was, however, very affordable. I'm not a new patron to the 99..I used to frequent the one in Auburn quite a bit. During this summer we decided to go to the one in Topsham for a bite to eat before our movie. I was shocked at how much the menu had changed. A whole bunch of new, and exciting items had been added. I had a hard time deciding what to order it all sounded really good. I ordered the Fish Tacos....they were AMAZING! The textures, seasoning and presentation all worked very well together. At first I was a bite concerned about the portion size, but the amount was perfect. I don't like receiving a plate rounded over with food. I was comfortably full. Kudos to the restaurant for a fantastic dish, can't wait to try more dishes. read more

Have been to this location several times, food is always great. Now that we are in social distancing and take out/delivery only mode, you literally dont know what you have until you get it home. Ventured out for curbside on Saturday, wanted something but didnt want to cook. Ordered my favorite fried chicken breast with homemade mashed, corn, cranberry sauce, gravy and biscuit. Total carb overload but really yummy. Hubby wanted a burger but not fast food. They have a nice Vermont cheddar burger with bacon that is pretty darn good so we placed the order. Picked up the food (and they do still have popcorn, in a little white bag with a message "thank you for your support." And as a little reminder...please leave a tip for those people. They are pooling the tips at this location and splitting them. I know the nice gal who brought our food was happy to still be working. When we got home, the food was great as expected...except for the burger. The bun was nice, fresh ingredients, bacon and cheddar. The burger did not look right. This particular burger should fill the bun, it was small. Hubby called and spoke with the manager the next day to let her know what happened. She said the wrong size burger was used and apologized profusely. We decided to order again from them (it was a VERY lazy weekend!) Hubby went to pick up the food and the manager comped both meals. No charge. When he arrived home, I called and spoke to the manager. I was ready to pay for the meals, that was above and beyond. This place knows what good customer service is, even with the forced take out only situation. Support your favorite restaurant locations, whether small locally-owned or chains. My parents were visiting from out of town and we wanted to go out to eat and get a quick meal so they could head back home. We were immediately greeted at the door with very friendly hosts. Our server, Andrew, was very polite and patient as my dad asked about various dishes and how they were prepared. My dad's taste buds have changed as he's aged and can be fussy. He ordered the broiled steak tips, medium. My mother and I ordered the broiled seafood combo. All three of us enjoyed our meals and service very much. The manager was at the host stand as we departed. She was very cordial and expressed appreciation for our visit. In today's day of most restaurants experiencing staffing shortages, needing to charge higher prices and provide less, this place did not reflect that. They did not skimp on quantity or quality. Not alot to say about this place. It is a chain restaurant similar to Chilis so dont expect anything too exotic. The food though is good. They also feature a sports type bar inside as well. So take a table or hit the bar. They do offer a cider as well as most any other bar drink your looking for. Me and my daughter and 2 grandchildren visited The Topsham,Me 99 restaurant. We paid $13.99 For the Stake tips and chicken finger combo but for $13.99 We each received four chicken nuggets which was small an overcooked. Also four small strips of tips with just a very few fries. We've been there in the past And usually take home half a meal. I've gotten better meals From governor's restaurant half the price. My only complaint is that last time we went it too about 45 minutes to get our meal and people that came in after us got there food first, which is always a little annoying, especially when you have a hungry 3 year old with you. Our family went to this restraunt usually we go to the one in Auburn and they are great. Have never had a complaint ever. This restraunt 1st gave us a high chair that reeked like pee and the they buckle was still wet . my husband's hand smelt like pee bad our son smelt like pee from it. My husband went and washed his hands came back and sanitized our son the best he could. We moved on from that issue then my husband starts earring his mean and my husband never spits his steak out but this time he did and looked disgusted I asked him whats wrong babe. He replies thats cartilage we politely told the watress when she asked us how it was she replies oh well do you want to go dishes mind you not evwryome was even close to done eatring I had a full drink and plate still. I politely said yes please can we have 3 as 3 people still had full meals. My husband didnt want to leave a tip i told him babe just leave a tip its the right thing to do no matter the fact. Then we get home and I am reviewing my online statement and to my surprise she had charged us 113.26 when we only authorized 104.38 as our food was 94.38. So I call to speak with the manager he called me a lair about thw pee then when I asked to pull the cameras he goes we do not have cameras in that dinning area section. How convenient I thought. I have never been so disgusted by a restraunts ethics or I should say lack of ethics. There is no way he smelt it as he would of smell the pee it was strong and disgusting. I love the fact you get popcorn for an appetizer. I've only ate here once so far but it was pretty delicious.
