Stopped by Irvine for some errands and swung by 99 Ranch Market on the way back. Tried the BBQ pork (char siu) from the deli and it was actually pretty decent. The chicken though... very bland. Back in March, I noticed when you walk in, the whole right side had a big section of popular Taiwanese souvenirs like Taiyang Tang sun cakes and Chia Te pineapple cakes. On the left side, they even had Taiwanese oil noodles, which I don't usually see at Vietnamese markets, so I grabbed a pack. I'm so used to shopping at Vietnamese supermarkets now. Mostly because around where I live, if you're looking for Asian groceries, it's usually either Korean markets like H Mart or Vietnamese supermarkets, so that's kind of become my baseline. Vietnamese markets are usually cheaper, but if you're specifically looking for Taiwanese products, the selection is pretty limited. Same with H Mart, they have some but not a lot. If you want the widest selection of Taiwanese items, 99 Ranch is honestly still the most reliable option. Prices do feel a bit higher overall compared to what I'm used to, but the variety and convenience are hard to beat. read more

This store has good food, a bit on the pricey side but the workers are friendly. I go here for the little food court area, which makes great chow mein and fried rice. They make perfect barbecue pork, great duck and I love their fried tofu. Lunch is ready by noon, and you can purchase tofu and those soy sauce boiled eggs near the bakery section. They also have great lobsters, and you can purchase fried fish if you ask the workers to do it, like I said they're all friendly. You just have to ask them to do it. It's a good place to shop, just gets expensive when you shop here. Nothing against the store, times change and I remember when they sold pork belly with steamed rice and a soy sauce hardboiled egg for $2.49 when I went to college. I've been shopping here since this place came out in late 1993, it replaced a Builder's Emporium and it's been here since. read more

I often go to this grocery store as I can get all my groceries, bakery items and Chinese BBQ. The grocery sales are pretty good week to week and pricing is very reasonable in general. The produce is generally fresh unless it's on sale, then you might need to do a little bit of digging for the fresher bits. You can buy live seafood just like any other Asian grocery store. The choices are plentiful and I especially like the refrigerated ready made food items like the baos. The bakery cakes are tasty for the price and cheaper than the other ones in the area like Paris Baguette and 85 C. I also like the hot deli area for days where I'm too lazy to cook. The parking lot always seems perpetually full but you can always find a spot if you don't mind the walk. Restrooms are clean. This store is not as busy as the other 99 Ranch markets but can get busy on weekends and after work hours. read more

A visit to 99 Ranch gives me newfound appreciation for HMart. The smell hits you, even before you set food inside. Admittedly, this store is older than HMart, so maybe time will tell. I come here to stock up on sauces and noodles when I'm in the area, though it seems like prices are better over at HMart. I've usually had pretty good luck with the produce, but on my last visit, I had to give up buying cilantro because they were past their prime. The hot food was a huge disappointment. You're better off going to Panda Express. This location is nicer than the one on Walnut. The new one in Aliso Viejo is much nicer. read more

Its a great asian store with big selection of live fish...its taiwanese-American supermarket chain. The service is good and I love that whenever we go the shelves are well stocked and organized. They are always very busy and the parking is always challenging. I always come here first their fresh mushrooms...You can find so many different type of it...they offer wide range of food and i enjoy shopping here and explore new products to try... This is purely a review for their breakfast offerings, of which in terms of a traditional Chinese/Taiwanese breakfast options are fairly scant in OC with A&J no longer doing breakfast and Four Sea being ridiculously expensive for some reason. You're not getting the highest quality or best tasting stuff, but it's great comfort food at fair prices, and sometimes that's all you need. You'll get an absolute feast for under $15 and plenty full for $10 of favorites, which to get this quantity would be like $30 anywhere else. I'll definitely always stop by somewhere in SGV when en route to LA, but on a lazy weekend in the area, the deli of this 99 Ranch will always hit the spot. I can't impart on the offerings of the others since I haven't gone during this time, but the Culver location in particular I know is known for this. You're not going to get the best service if you don't speak Chinese, but you can point to the items you want and just follow the line. You'll learn the name of things over time and they'll work with your broken Chinese as well, or at least know the English terms for them since nothing is really labeled. Right as you walk in you're hit with the smell of fish since they have an extensive selection of fresh seafood. Don't worry tho, after 10 or so minutes you'll acclimate and almost forget about it :) The store is nicely organized and laid out. Aisle signage is helpful to direct you to what you're looking for. This is truly a one-stop spot to get all of your Asian food groceries from produce, meat/seafood, cooking essentials, and everything in between! This is my go to supermarket when I need to replenish my Indonesian condiments, spices, snacks, and bulk bags of rice. This is my first time at the 99 Ranch in Irvine, I am from Northern California and often go to the 99 ranch in El Cerrito. This 99 ranch is so much nicer, clean more updated and larger. I really wish the one near me was this Large and well kept. If you are into cooking Asian food, this is the place to go and the prices are very reasonable. Please keep in mind. This is an Asian food/cooking focused grocery store so don't expect a Safeway. The baked goods were yummy. Definitely recommend. The hot goods left a lot to be desired so to be honest I avoid that. I also got the fresh sushi as opposed to the package sushi and the sashimi that I got was indeed fresh and very tasty. It had both salmon and yellowtail. read more

There are two ways you can tell if someone is from NorCal or SoCal. Ask them: Is it "101 or "The 101" freeway? Or Is it Ranch 99 or 99 Ranch! Maybe it's just my luck... but in the past, I have experienced their produce going bad just days after purchasing. And finding expired products still on the shelves. 99 Ranch is pretty much the reason I'm diligent about reading labels before anything goes into the shopping cart. I mostly ditched them once H Mart started expanding. But I come back periodically for seafood, pineapple cakes, pork buns, snacks, and other bakery/deli items. Recently I was wandering through the aisles, just browsing since I had no intention of purchasing anything. These Starbucks bottled drinks caught my eye. The flavors seemed interesting, so I ended up leaving with both. Blackcurrant Black Tea - overly tart, berry-like sweetness that overwhelms the black tea base. Peach Oolong Tea - combines the slightly roasted undertones of earthy oolong and the natural essence of ripe, fruity peaches. Quite aromatic! Overall, I prefer this location compared to the one on Walnut and Jeffrey. Mostly the same experiences, but slightly better selection here. read more

I posted a review for another 99 Ranch that I went to and this 99 Ranch certainly fulfills all of what I've said in my other review as well, namely that as a native Chinese person this place is pretty authentic and for the most part the products you see that are not from the US are coming straight from china, taiwan, japan, Hong kong, etc. However I will say this 99 Ranch in Irvine seems to me significantly older than some of the other ones, probably because it is one of The Originals that was so successful that they were able to expand out into newer locations and build fresh rather than adopting from an old supermarket. This review is for the Deli only. Since Sam Woo's closing a couple of years ago, the selection for affordable dim sum around the Irvine area dwindled. Decided to give the Deli at the 99 Ranch Market (on Culver and Irvine Center Drive) a try. If you're just craving for cheap(er) dim sum, this definitely does the job; however, it's a reminder of how much I miss the Sam Woo that was just next door to this Deli. The portions for the shumai and har gow are definitely smaller (about 1/2 in size) than what you would get elsewhere (Lunasia in SGV comes to mind) but the bright side is definitely the price. About 20%-30% cheaper so if all you want is a quick bite of dim sum, this is the place to go. Lines in the morning move fairly quickly and sometimes they open up the cashier at the bakery just across to process payment, as well. read more

I bought a pack of beef meatballs from this 99 Ranch (Culver Plaza in Irvine). When I opened them right after getting home, they had a sour smell -- clearly spoiled. I called the store to let them know, thinking they'd at least apologize or show some concern. But all I was told was "you can come in for a refund or exchange." No apology, no responsibility, no care about food safety at all. I've shopped here for years, and this was honestly disappointing. Food safety isn't a minor issue, and the lack of basic customer service made me question whether they value their regular customers at all. Recently renovated or upgraded! While most of their product locations have remained unchanged, this location had a much needed appliance upgrade to all of their frozen or refrigerated perishables. It appears cleaner and more organized. I come to this location more often than the Culver one since it's less crowded and parking is easy to get in/out. It also helps that I can easily locate things since they are grouped in a way that makes sense, at least for me. From the entrance going right to left, it starts with frozen goods, fresh noodles, beverages, snacks, home goods, dry goods, sauces, canned goods, instant noodles & rice, frozen meals, pickled goods, meats and then produce. They have a bakery and ready to eat meals located on the right. We love their mango cake slices and sweet breads. The refrigerated section used to have sliced pig ears, but they don't have it anymore. They now sell them as braised pig ears as two whole pieces. Not bad, but requires a bit more effort to cut them up and season at home. Produce and fruit selection has always treated me well, but I'm not a fan of their deli/meat section. I bought some pork once and it had a very gamey flavor, so I just avoid altogether. I only buy frozen versions like the sliced lamb or the packaged bones for broths. Overall, I feel they are trying to up their game to compete with a number of H-Marts opening in the area haha. read more

This market is improving. I went there yesterday and was not greeted with the usual "fishy" smell that I"m used to there. The smell of the market is fresh and clean. This is improvement number one. The produce section has improved also. The items for sale were fresh and looked as nice as other markets. What is really nice and special about this market is the selection of items. There are many types of veggies you can't get at a regular market. They also have very large selection of pork. This is wonderful. We eat a lot of chicken, so it's nice to have a lot of choices with pork. The fish selection is also very good. Soy milk is always fresh. All around a great market. read more

I used to go to this 99 ranch a lot. However, recently, their product quality seems to lower significantly. One thing especially to stay away from is their pork, either pork belly or leg or minced pork, they either stink or have a strong sour smell, which means they are spoiled, and should not be sold AT ALL. read more

Food restaurant sucks, store is okay. Went here with the wife and daughter for some breakfast. Got in line, staff ignored us. Got cut multiple times? I have no clue how they just skipped us. I even waved and said hello hey it's not like I'm standing there in line looking at the food and not order. Alright so 10 minutes later, we were finally helped. Picked out some dim sum and asked for the pork ribs. Even pointed at it. The lady even pointed at it. The worker next to her said in mandarin to give them whatever. Lol. I came here to do some shopping for the lunar new year and it was crowded, as expected. I love the selection of fruits and vegetables as well as other grocery items. I'm always excited to see what's on sale for the week. I've been looking for thick sweet potato noodles (as found at hotpot places like Yin Tang and Show HotPot) and was so happy to find them here! When you enter, there's a deli on the left that serves fast, casual Chinese food along with my favs: roasted duck and roasted pork! There's also a little bakery next to it that has fresh pastries as well. Coming through the aisles, I was able to find all the ingredients and everything was well-stocked and organized. We came to buy meat. The meat dept is quite busy so we took a number from the dispenser to wait for our turn. Many popular cuts are prepackaged on the shelves for customers' convenience. Of course we can't leave without buying fruits, snacks, noodles, cooking oil and other stuff for a Chinese kitchen. The damage was about $150 when we got out of the door. Unsure of what the specific name of their new takeout food counter is but it's clearly designated by the hanging duck or bbq spareribs. Now this can be a difficult place to order as can expect some language barrier and miscommunication but it's worth the effort to go outside of one's comfort zone to taste food from different places. I tried the char shiu combination that comes with a bbq pork that has a combination of a little fatty, a little sweet, and a lot of savory over a bed of hot rice and steamed vegetables. This isn't fancy food. This is comfort food. This is simplicity at its finest and it hits the mark. Roast duck is tasty. I believe the half duck or whole duck is a good value. Roast pork is good when it's good, but as much as I want to order it here you have to look at the color of the pork. They over cook it a lot. Salted chicken when I'm looking to buy some protein. Don't let them forget the oil dipping sauce. They'll chop it into pieces if you'd like. That's the way I get it. Soy chicken is too salty for me. I guess if I eat it with white rice it would help balance out the saltiness. BBQ pork is good but make sure to look for the moist pieces. This place is bad, I can't order food here without some jerk sticking his face in front of mine. To make things worse, the cashier seems to 'not care' that another customer is stepping on my toes. When I spoke up the other people in line were saying the same thing, they said some guy was poking his face around and cutting in line. Then to make everyone more upset, the cashier rang him up ahead of all of us. Your go-to market if you're looking for Asian (Chinese/Taiwanese) products. This location was remodeled the past year or so, as you can probably tell from the pictures. What baffles me is why change everything, make it look nice, but keep the old flooring. I just can't get past it and it diminishes the shopping experience. Aside from that, they're very well stocked with Taiwanese goodies (snacks and drinks). just came by today for some boba ice cream bar (get the tiger boba one if you're here, it's super good!), ginger and rice wine, and I really enjoy the various options/brands you can choose from. You would think all Ranch99 markets would source their meats from one common source , but in reality I noticed each market may get them from different sources and even different countries .
