The concept of buffet + shabu is interesting and although 9292 Shabu isn't the first to do it in Duluth (Gom Shabu in Suwanee does too), this place takes the cake for implementation and presentation. Lunch is $9.99 and dinner is $12.99 and it gives you access to all of the vegetables and the hot bar (everything except the meat and seafood). You can order meat/seafood in individual servings or as unlimited, both of which are fair prices.
Design: The interior itself is very sleek and modern. There are 2, 4, and 6 person tables to the right and back and more private rooms curtained off to the left. Bathrooms are separated; the men's were near the back left and I believe the women's were to the back right. The buffet itself is in the middle. The layout is...unique? Unlike most buffet places, there isn't a flow or path to follow. You just kinda have to go around everything. Sauce bar is in the middle.
Food: One word: AMAZING! You have your standard vegetables that come in all shabu plates (cabbage, broccoli, sweet potato noodles, mushrooms, tofu, sausages, fish cakes etc.) in addition to many other foods (cauliflower, lettuce, imitation crab meat). What's unique is that they have different varieties of the same food. Pork vs. Beef sausage, different types of fish cakes, different types (colors) of noodles, and even different types of ddeok (roll vs. flat)! If you have any picky eaters or children in your group and still want to eat shabu, this place would be great choice. There's also an additional hot bar at the end/beginning with pasta choices, tteokbokki, fried rice, and japchae. Though it seems out of place, I think it compliments the shabu nicely as an appetizer and to differentiate them from their competition. Broth options are aplenty with traditional and spicy versions. Example: Spicy vegetable is regular vegetable broth with spicy pickled radish provided on a small dish.
Service: Hit or miss. I went two times, once for a weekday lunch and again for a Friday dinner. Both times, our young hostess was sweet and conversed with our group in Korean and English. Though she seemed swamped, she was able to prioritize her tasks between assisting customers inside the store and picking up the phone. Our server during lunch was amazing too. He was quick to come when we called and checked up on us just enough. Service during dinner was...questionable. Our group came at a busy time so for the first hour, I just let it go. Our group of 7 was split into 2 tables with 2 different servers. The server for our table forgot our silverware and we had to flag her down for it. The other table's server didn't come back to take their order after handing them a menu. Our menu was taken away after ordering our broth without asking us if we wanted to order meat. The tables have a call button but I don't think it works because for our entire meal, we would press it multiple times and in the end, just flag a server who happened to be walking by. When we finished, it had died down a lot but both servers in our section were busy cleaning tables that we had to get up and ask for the check. I think you pay at the front? Our table waited for about 10-15 minutes and then just went up to pay because no one was coming.
Overall, a good experience. I think I'll be visiting often from now on, but during lunch or weekday dinner. read more
