We spent a weekend in Charleston and were excited because we heard that the food in the area is phenomenal. Unfortunately, we kept striking out at many places we tried to go because everywhere was closed for private events all weekend! We had heard that She Crab Soup was a must-try so I googled to see who had the BEST. That brought us to 82 Queen! Thankfully it was open! We were able to make reservations in advance via their website, which was very convenient! The inside decor reminded me so much of a jazz brunch that I went to in New Orleans. It was a little eccentric and very colorful. We were greeted right away and our sweet server answered all our questions about the menu. We started with a cup of she grab soup! A cup is more than enough because it is a very rich soup. It was a creamy cross between corn chowder and lobster bisque. We loved it! We decided to go with our servers recommended dishes of the fried green tomatoes, and the braised beef short ribs. These dishes were absolutely delicious. Such great recommendations. I couldn't finish my meal after starting with the soup and had a flight to catch later that evening, so I couldn't take the rest to-go and it broke my heart a little lol I wanted to keep eating it! 82 Queen is a fancy little restaurant that appears to have been built inside an old house. I came in with a small group of people and they seated us in a room with five other tables. First thing I noticed was how loud the space was. The high vaulted ceilings created this echo chamber where despite having only two other tables in the space it was hard to hear my party. Our waitress was a wonderful lady who was super helpful and gave great suggestions. We all had the she-crab soup and it was absolutely delicious - creamy and savory it was a perfect soup. I ordered the braised beef short rib and it was also absolutely amazing. This was a meat that needed no knife because it was so very tender! It was a great portion size, very filling. A five-star experience with wonderful food, excellent service, and a beautiful setting. We chose to sit outdoors, and it is just a wonderful garden of color. There are outdoor covered seats, uncovered seats, and a beautiful indoor restaurant and bar as well - just the experience for everyone's individual tastes. My halibut special was wonderfully prepared, seasoned perfectly, and the she crab soup was tasty, though it arrived at the table of not quite hot enough for my taste. Service was excellent. Pricing averaged about $65 per person all in, a very reasonable value especially since we were just drinking soft drinks. Came here for a birthday brunch with a large group of ladies, and we were seated in a private room! I think this was my favorite dining experience during my weekend in Charleston. The food was great, the service was great, and the company was great. I don't even remember what I ordered because I ended up having a little bite of everything on the table, and we ordered a lot of food. Everything was great. I also had several mimosas that were a special that day. The experience was wonderful. Visited Charleston and walked in around 12pm on a weekday and was able to get seated immediately for two people. Overall, not sure I'd go out of my way for this place if visiting, but I think it's a good option if you're in the area and hungry. There's a lovely outdoor seating area. Some of it is covered with fans and there's another area that is more open with lots of plants - very nice! I just would caution that the mosquitoes ate me alive (had to even run out and buy bug spray!). For food I ordered: -She Crab Soup: I would pass on this. I thought this soup was a lot tastier other places, but it could've been an off day. It tasted heavily of sherry (don't think it cooked down enough). -Southern Tomato Pie: this was delicious. Open since 1982, this restaurant in Charleston's historic French quarter focuses on fresh food, local cuisine and gracious hospitality. The restaurant is actually three buildings surrounded by a garden courtyard, giving diners the opportunity to eat indoors, in well-appointed rooms, or al fresco in tables scattered about the garden (heaters keep you comfortable if the weather is on the chilly side). There is "high rise" parking lot directly across the street from the entrance to 82 Queen. Our server, Ariel, was a delight throughout the meal. She didn't rush us to order, instead encouraging us to take our time and consider all the options. she was very knowledgeable about all the entries, and was able to make suggestions based on her personal experience as well as her historical knowledge of previous diners. She checked on us frequently during the meal to be sure we were comfortable, but was not overly obtrusive. The experience itself was excellent, as was the food. We began our dining experience with cups of the most exquisite "award-winning" she crab soup. The other choices on the menu were equally enticing, but being from the Tidewater area of Virginia, we were eager to compare this soup to what is bragged about at home. I have to concede that the 82 Queen version of she crab soup beat out our local competition. I chose the lowcountry seafood gumbo for my meal. With shrimp, oysters, crab, andouille sausage, okra, corn, sweet peppers, onions, tomato broth, and Carolina gold rice pilaf, I was in heaven. My husband decided on the Jambalaya, and he raved about it through the meal. Our friend selected the fish and grits, and pronounced it absolutely delicious. I came here with my mom and my sister for a later dinner on a Friday evening. 82 Queen is one of the oldest and most iconic restaurants in Charleston. Known for their low country cuisine and family recipes, they are a very popular eatery! I would highly recommend making reservations in advance to ensure you will be able to dine there. Parking could be a problem, as they are located in the heart of Queen's Street, downtown Charleston. The interior is lovely and the patio is even more beautiful. We opted to sit inside for dinner. The dining rooms are reminiscent of an old southern house, with the walls filled with lovely painting. The ambiance of the restaurant really completes the experience. The service is impeccable! Everyone is on top of things and extremely pleasant. Our server was very personable and did a great job explaining the menu to us and engaging with us. I really enjoyed him! To start, my sister and I split the Southern Tomato Pie and my mom ordered a cup of their famous, award winning She Crab Soup. The portions for these two dishes were not huge, but they were not too small either. My mom really enjoyed the soup and noted how much flavor it had. While it did have a decent amount of crab meat, she had wished there were bigger chunks of crab in the soup. The Southern Tomato Pie consisted of local tomatoes, biscuit crust, cheddar, mozzarella, applewood bacon, and scallions. The pie was so cheesy and the biscuit crust was super buttery. The bacon added a nice saltiness to the sharpness of the cheese and the slight sweetness of the juicy tomatoes. I really, really enjoyed the biscuit crust, wasn't too rich, too thick, or too heavy. Overall I thought this was a very balanced appetizer, would definitely recommend. For our entrees, we all ended up ordering the Lowcountry Seafood Gumbo. We had made a reservation which was good as the walk ins were having to wait it out in the very nice bar. Their GF options are clearly marked, but they don't have a GF desert and not really many (any?) appy options, either. That said, we had gumbo and BBQ shrimp and grits and both were good. They appear to be using heritage grits as you could really taste the corn. The okra in the gumbo was nicely prepared and the oysters were barely cooked. Portions were larger than at Poogans Porch down the street. We ate at both and we'd go here if we had to choose. The acoustics upstairs weren't great. The soup is just excellent, and though I've had a lot of different versions of it in the area, this was decidedly the best. The grits that came with the tomatoes were excellent and flavorful. Often grits are just a transport for butter, but not the case here with a wonderful texture somewhat reminiscent of mashed potatoes. Main courses were duck and gumbo (pictures included). Duck is often overcooked In restaurants or drowning sauce, but neither was an issue here with the meat done to perfection and the sauce just complimenting the flavor. Even the rice pilaf was well above typical restaurant quality. The gumbo was superior with perfectly cooked (i.e. non-rubbery) shrimp, oysters and crab. I could have done with more pretty easily. We had a wonderful, light, creamy desert made with mascarpone that disappeared in seconds. So, was it good? Oh yeah. And, truthfully, pretty reasonably priced. We will for sure be back. read more

We came here for brunch and it was a great experience! We sat at the bar because it was so busy, but it wasn't too loud and still maintained the charm of the rest of the restaurant. The cocktail list was nothing special, so we just ordered mimosas, but the classic southern brunch menu was phenomenal. This is such a quaint and cozy restaurant in the heart of Charleston. The food was absolutely amazing! I had the gumbo and the combination of flavors just popped in your mouth. Just the right amount of okra, because I will tell you I have had some with WAY too much okra that it isn't even enjoyable to eat. The tomato attack was in a bed of polenta and was very tasty. Our family stopped at 82 Queen for our final meal on our family vacation. We had the wonderful opportunity to sit out in the courtyard under beautiful tree cover and experience one of the best patios in Charleston. This is my second time dining at 82 Queen and it was so good the first time that we decided to bring the family here on our next vacation. The service was splendid each time we came here. Try taking a walk through the restaurant to enjoy the rich history and decor of the buildings. We happen to order the flounder BLT each time we were down here and it is very delicious. There is quite a bit of food so be prepared and be hungry. I ordered the barbecue shrimp and grits. It was good however, I am not a huge fan of the barbecue on the shrimp compared to other shrimp and grits meals. Our family ordered the southern Pickens appetizer. It was underwhelming, as it was about half pickled veggies. The deviled eggs were probably the favorite and the kids did not even eat the pita chips. I would not order this again, but would try something different like the fried green tomatoes. Overall, this restaurant is a big hit. Such a sweet setting for some classic southern food! We had the she crab soup (so delicious!), the southern pickins' (yummy), and the fish and grits for lunch (note: brunch is only served on the weekends). The grits were so lovely and creamy and the fish was delicate, but flavorful. We elected to sit outside on the patio, but were unfortunately welcomed with wind and rain. Luckily the patio was covered and had the ability to enclose if requested. There were some lovely indoor tables we could see through the windows though, with dazzling chandeliers overhead and lovely second-story views of the courtyard. Something to consider if you're swayed by the recommendation to eat outside. The service was good, our server was polite, but the food took a bit longer than I'd expect for some soup, fried fish, and some grits. Only slightly so. I was very underwhelmed with my experience here. It's a pretty place but service was lackluster. I had been very excited for it but would not return. I didn't care for the tomato pie, but that could be a preference. I'd never had it before and it could be that it just wasn't for me. Shrimp and grits were flavorless and the texture was off. I will never not finish shrimp and grits and I barely touched mine. The server said nothing so they either didn't care or it's a usual issue.
