We started coming here because the kid's original eye doctor joined Straub and it became inconvenient to schedule an appointment (not to mention the drive and parking situation). I had inquired with my own doctor but he doesn't prescribe contacts, and he might have been the one to suggest Dr. Inouye. Scheduling an appointment was super easy! The website calendar/intake form was intuitive and we didn't have to wait long, maybe a week or so. The location is a little unexpected because it's in a mostly residential neighborhood, and above a bar, but which is closed during the day, so the parking situation works out, generally. As far as I can tell there is no accessible entrance, only stairs. Staff are courteous and kind. Dr. Inouye isn't the chatty type, but neither is the kid. They don't do the pupil dilation thing, which is very convenient because the kid had to go back to school after the appt. Everything was computerized. The nurse patiently demonstrated how to put on and remove contacts and let him practice until he was comfortable. I think his first appt was abt an hour long, and the subsequent ones were 45 minutes or so. Generally everyone is patient. They have also been generous with the samples, which we appreciate, because the kid tends to tell me a few days before he runs out and we have to scramble and ration the contacts until the new order arrives... Communication is convenient too. I tend to text more than calling. They'd send the link to pay the invoice via text before they'd order the contacts. 15 minute grace period per appt. They're gracious abt the time I was stuck in traffic (must have been the moon!) and every person driving a vehicle seems to be in a gridlock. They are were understanding and helped reschedule, which I really appreciate. Generally satisfied overall! read more

My son just had his eye appointment there and he liked it. Small office with plenty of options for glasses. My son liked all the machines that were there and felt like the doctor was really getting a full scope of his eyes. My son wears contacts preferably which the doctor took into consideration and made sure that he gets him his contacts before glasses. We have a follow up appointment next week. This place has nice people working for it. Every every time I have been there they have been kind. But, this office only allows for a 1 year prescription when getting eye exams. That is the minimum requirement for hawaii. Where most places are 2 years. When speaking with the office they explained it is like this because your prescription may change within that 1-2 year period. Although to me it appears to be a tactic to make more money via more examinations. In a situation where your glasses break you may be required to pay for a new examination if you're within that 1-2 year period. I'll be moving to a location that allows me to get all the same services + an extra year of a prescription. read more

My very first visit here and my experience was excellent! Dr. Inouye was super efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly. He got right down to business with my eye exam, so I thought he wasn't a "people person"... I'm glad I was wrong. When he was done, he explained my condition and gave me options, asked more explorative questions, and gave me recommendations. I have a very typical asian face - flat, round, high cheekbones, and a flat nose... i was worried i wouldn't be able to find a pair of glasses i would be happy with... wrong again! Bill for co-pay was sent almost a year after appointment. When they called to confirm my appointment, i emphasized that i only wanted to have an appointment with Dr. Jan Hirakawa but when i went for my appointment , another doctor attended to me instead of Dr. H. Two bills was sent to me for this appointment for one service but with different amounts, first bill i received was lower by more than$20.00. Also, there was a big difference of my co-pay compared to other years!!!! I used to pay less than $20, but bill was $60+ then a week later, the amount was $80+ !!! I just had my annual vision exam with Dr. Sato, which is she's been providing service for me for the last couple of years. It is a good operation, which they are always checking my vision with the latest equipment. I wish I were a better client but Dr. Sato has been very patient with me, as while my mind tries to control my reflexes, it still blinks at the instance of the flash. After several tries, she managed to capture what she needed. Dr. Sato continues with Dr. Inouye and staff to continue the practice with the same professionalism, dedication and thoroughness that had been when it under the previous business of Vision Source. The selection of frames is still great choices and I know that the Doctors will continue giving the best patient service as the previous establishment. The name and owner might be different, but I know that I was left in well cared for hands with the Doctors at 808 Eye Care, as I had been in the previous owner for over 65 years. This is the point where I figured that I should go to the eye doctor for this problem because from what I had heard was that eye doctors are experts and fixing blurry chalkboards. I don't know how they manage to do it, but it worked! Ever since that first visit to Dr. Jan (Hirakawa) I've been a loyal patient to Progressive Optometry. Nuts, I'm not the first reviewer! lol. My husband and I have been seeing him for 3 years now and he hasn't done us any wrong. His office is super nice, efficient and accomodating. The one reason why we like his office? SATURDAY APPOINTMENTS! And he's a VSP participant. He is professional and personable. Personally, I don't really see him that often because I'm not a glasses wearer so I only come in once a year for my annual eye exam. However, my husband who wears glasses and contacts, sees him often, orders specialty glasses from him as well. My previous optometrist (also was my husband's previous Dr) at Ala Moana is great too but he does not do any test if I complain something about my eye. This is why my husband which to Dr. Hirakawa years ago. I stayed with our old optometrist because its closer to home. It was a very fun, relaxing experience. I have not had my eyes checked for over 40 years but need glasses for long distance due to my age. Every step was explained to me and Dr Jan Hirakawa was very sensitive to my needs but professional at the same time. I left feeling like I had acquired a friend who is concerned about my well-being. I most heartily recommend the Vision Source Honolulu for anyone needing optical help. I look forward to working with them for may years to come. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because I have mobility issues and did not know that the stairs leading to their office is very taxing for someone with arthritis. I usually see Kensey Inoyue who is laid back and friendly, certainly knowledgable and caring, giving advice which he wouldn't profit from that would help me. I saw another doctor this visit and enjoyed the visit to the office just as well. The staff here are professional and friendly, they have a large selection of frames and they were open last year to putting my prescription lenses into vintage wirerims I brought in. "Dr. Jan" -- the owner -- truly cares about her patients. It was obvious that every time she is in, she does her best to make sure a customer is completely satisfied. As for the remainder of the staff, let's just hope they improve with time. Customer service is not their area of expertise, even though it should be. My recommendations to the staff: call when you have updates, rather than forcing the customer to come in and find out himself/herself​ that the glasses were not ready when promised -- repeatedly. And I found one employee, who shall remain nameless, completely offensive when she huffed, and grabbed the mail that *she had placed on the reception desk* and turned it over, as if to imply that we were the reason the to/from information was plainly visible to guests.
