First, I was greeted by Junko-san (doctor's assistant) with big smile at the entry door, Charlene and Noni at reception desk were both very friendly and helpful. They immediately informed Dr. Sakamoto that I was there to see him, and I was able to see him right on time. Due to my eye condition, I have had many many eye appointments since I was young. All those appointments were successful, albeit hard for me to find a lense that fits me well. But coming to see Dr. Sakamoto has by far been the worst experience I have had. The actual appointments were fine. But in short, my first fitting for scleral lenses (very expensive lenses) was done in November 2022. It is July 2023 and I have only received 1 contact lense. For the past 8 months, I have called many many many many many times asking the status of my 1 contact lense but they seem to not know what is going on! I never write reviews, but this is truly an exception. The staff is friendly, and helpful, Dr. Sakamoto is also nice, but I just cannot understand why it takes 8 months to get a pair of expensive scleral lenses to the patient. Of course, insurance approval take time, but since I have confirmed that it was approved and your office has confirmed that it was approved, I don't know what is the hold up! The office is nice. The equipment is also good, love the location, but all of that pales in comparison to the service that I have received. read more

Be careful. He does a lot of unnecessary tests and "treatments" for which you will pay out of pocket. He often recommends follow up every 3 months for beauty cream and cosmetic stuff for older, compliant Japanese-speaking patients; these patients completely get taken advantage of. read more

I had an eye emergency that I needed to take care of. I called Queens ER and they recommended that I go to an optometrist or ophthalmologist first before going due to covid 19 worries. I checked yelp and this was one of the first places that was open and had good ratings. So I called and the receptionist who answered was really nice and they were able to schedule me in right away! I got dropped off and had tests done and Dr. Sakamoto was awesome! He made sure I understood what the issue was and patiently answered all my questions in a way I could understand. I even got to buy a set of glasses from him and he did what he could to help me do what I need to do until I can get corrective eye surgery! I have used this clinic twice. Dr. Sakamoto was very thorough during my exam. I wear both contacts and occasionally glasses. I have had problems in the past with my glasses not being similar enough to the contacts. The glasses Dr. Sakamoto prescribed are literally perfect. When he did my exam many years ago I had a slight astigmatism but for my current prescription it was not necessary. I see great and can wear either the contacts or glasses interchangeably! I have been mulling over this review for a couple of weeks. Dr. Sakamoto has been our eye doctor for the past 3 years. Location is convenient, located in the Ala Moana building so parking is free and plentiful. This office has high tech equipment. I love the ease of the eye exam. The best part is that he does this test where I put my face against this machine and look through this snorkel mask thingy. It blows a puff of air on my eyeballs, and no more diluting drops and walking around with those cheesy wraparound glasses! Dr. Sakamoto is a very nice and personable doctor. He likes to talk story during the appointment, and doesn't rush through my questions. He's patient with my sullen and moody tweenager! He started Keiki Vision with the Rotary Clubs of Hawaii. This is where they go into 3rd grade classes of certain Elementary schools and will check their vision to see if they may need glasses. Because of all of these positives, I've overlooked a few things. Their frame selection is limited. Just a small section that will be covered fully for the price of $150 through our vision insurance. Mostly name brand lens, so this is the place to go if you're looking for Tiffany, Versace, Tory Burch or Prada... We have very good vision coverage through VSP. Free upgrades on polycarbonate lens, transition, scratch resistant and UV coating. Before coming here, all I paid out of pocket was the co payment which was $25 each for my daughter and I. The first visit we had here was for three of us. When they gave us our total, we were charged about $430. They ran our card through, and I asked the receptionist to double check that because I've never paid even close to that before. They mistakenly did not use the right Insurance and refunded us $250. They were going through new software, and trying to do everything on an IPad. Sitting there waiting for my daughter, I heard about their issues with patients orders, payments, and processing. The next visit we had, I ordered some Coach lens. Transitions and bifocals. Went home and found out that the transitions were not put on the lens. Had to take them back and get new lens. Chuckled with Dr. while going through my exam because he was struggling with the inputting on the iPad. This last visit ordered contact lens and my daughter wanted her glasses without the transitions. Unbelievable, but he was struggling with the iPad during my exam. I mentioned to him that maybe they should switch back to the old school way. Anyway, I told the receptionist 3 times about making sure her glasses did not have the transitions, even checking before walking out the door. Got the call the day before we left for San Fran for vacation to pick up our glasses and lens. Went to pick them up, and because we were waiting for 25 min after our appointment, decided to just get them fitted later when we had time and they weren't behind on their appointments. Took them on our vacation and were disappointed again, because they were indeed with the transition lens. Called the office when we got back and I expressed my disappointment with this latest mishap. Another 2 weeks go by and we go back and get them fixed. Not worth the cost, the time spent waiting for our appointment at each visit. read more

Dr. Sakamoto is AMAZING! I have multiple eye problems including severe near sightedness, a recent history of cornea ulcers, and past diagnosis of limbal cell deficiency. He takes care of everything! He is super knowledgeable, uses state of the art equipment, has a nice office, and best of all - he has fantastic bed side manner. Ok, so it's not really "bed side," but you know what I mean. He is kind and interested in knowing about your life and never rushes you through a visit or cuts you short during a story. This is great since it also helps him to make tailored recommendations. For example, did you know that not all soft contacts are created equal? There are some that are better to wear and toss after being in the ocean to prevent bacteria from growing on them and affecting your eyes. Cool. I mean gross, but cool. It's really nice to finally have an eye doctor take the time to listen to you and address all of your concerns. My last ophthalmologist was convenient because he had an optometrist in his office. He'd do the "fancy stuff" and she'd do the glasses/contacts. Um - well move over cuz Dr. Sakamoto does it all! He's up to date on literature and technology and doesn't pawn you off to another provider for contact fitting. In addition, he is very accommodating with appointments and understands a busy schedule, which I really appreciate. His office is located on the 20th floor (room 2005) in the office building attached to Ala Moana, so I usually park at the mall and walk over. The ladies who work at his office are extremely nice. Fair warning however: they seem to usually deal with Japanese speaking patients and their English may not be super good. But hey, my English isn't all that great. I know I'm only hapa, but talking to them and going there makes me feel more Japanese (by the way, Dr. Sakamoto's English is impeccable!). All my family have gone to Dr. Sakamoto for years. He is very kind, a gentle soul, and very knowledgeable. My daughter dances seriously, and uses Ortho-K contact lenses prescribed for her by Dr. Sakamoto. They have freed her from the awkwardness of glasses and daytime contact lenses. These lenses have proven a great solution - so comfortable and safe for kids who play sports or engage in other physical activities. All in all this is an excellent eye clinic with a friendly and caring staff. They are all bilingual, speaking both English and Japanese. I would recommend them to anyone! read more

I should have read the comments carefully. I realized some people have the same comments. Worst doctor I have ever seen. He is more like a businessman rather than a doctor. He was kind of mad to look for substitute eyedrop for "LOW INCOME INSURANCE(exactly words from his mouth in front of his staff and other patients)". Sold us a solution for 65 dollars which you can easily find it on Amazon for 20 dollars. He gave my daughter a prescription which is not covered by the insurance. When we visited him next appointment he said we should have called him to change it. When I went to drug store to pick up the next prescription he gave my daughter. There was none. He forgot about giving the second one. So I followedhis suggestion and called his office to get the prescription, no one called me in three days. I have to make another appointment to get it. I absolutely LOVE these glasses--the best pair I've ever had. Outstanding prescription, and his awesome selection of frames is generously priced. Turnaround was pretty quick too. His office is new and spotless clean, and the receptionists are equally pleasant. I usually park in Ala Moana over by Genki Sushi and parlay a visit to the doc into a little stroll or lunch at the mall. My experience with Dr. Sakamoto and his staff was nothing but wonderful! All the ladies were extremely nice and helpful checking me in. The equipment in the office is really modern which made the eye tests so much easier than any other optometrist I've ever been to! Even though it was my first appointment with them, they started me with the pre-exam eye tests on time and it only took 10 minutes or so to finish them all. Super easy. Dr. Sakamoto is so nice and it seemed like he really cared about you as a patient and wanted to get to know you and your eyes without rushing. He even explained some of the new technology and helped me pick out my frames when he had time between appointments! The whole staff here is just so kind and despite some of the other reviews saying their frame selection is limited - I thought they had a really wide selection of modern and traditional frames compared to the other offices I've been on the island. They did their best to give me tips on the best use of my insurance and offered me discounts on my frames. Dr. Sakamoto was worst Dr. never ever had before!!!!!!! i just went to there once a year check up and wanna get a prescription.I thought he was nice first ,but he tried me to buy contact lens there which is I still have some. I never asked him to get a estimate for contact lens, but he showed me that.That wasnt reasonable price for me. That felt me whats going on this guy?? Sakamoto is a money greedy eye doctor. Saw him for contacts but he charges so much for the actual lenses that I refused to pay for them. What would have cost $100 for 12 monthly lenses online, he wanted $250 after insurance. Such a con. So I refused them and wanted to use my insurance benefit on glasses and was told I would have to pay $50 for my contact lense prescription which I would need to order lenses online. What an a**. Oh another thing. Don't schedule appointments after their lunch hours between 1-230. A) he's always late coming back from lunch so it pushes everyone back and b) I had unfortunate experience of having first appt after his lunch and I could smell the food on his breath. Dr. Sakamoto saved my entire vacation! I woke up on the first day of my vacation to find out I had stupidly not packed any contacts or even my glasses for the trip (I'm still kicking myself for doing that). Normally, it wouldn't be a problem, but I now use daily contacts and I had already thrown my contacts from the day before in the trash can. There was nothing I could do to save them. I called a couple places to see if they could help me and Dr. Sakamoto and his staff told me to come right in and they would help me out. As soon as I arrived in the office (probably 20 minutes after I had called) Dr. Sakamoto found the exactly brand and prescription I used. I told him I needed 5 days worth and he actually gave me enough for 10 days. The best part, he didn't even charge me. He was so generous and his staff was awesome. Oh and the view from their 20th floor office is awesome too! If I lived in Hawaii there is no doubt he would be my primary eye doctor! read more

I found this eye doctor through yelp, seen one negative review and thought maybe it was just one bad in the bunch. Tried it out for myself, and I regret going here. In short, ridiculous high prices and hidden fees, there's always new employees getting trained it seems, seen much nicer offices, not sanitary enough for me. I felt like I was literally talking to a salesman at a dealership. Came in for an annual check up and new contacts, $35 hidden fee to do a 3d picture of the inside of my eyes. Told him my eyes get dry, he tried to add on 2 eye drop bottles to my bill. $203.62 just for a check up $375.90 ordering 1 year supply contacts for astigmatism (4 boxes) $579.52 grand total? Yikes, after my insurance I still paid 300, almost triple the price of my previous eye doctor. One could argue that his level of expertise and quality of work accounts for his "fair" price. I've had bad eye sight since I was 8 never have I been charged this much before. Is it worth it? I guess if money isn't an issue. 1 star because the new employees are friendly, and 1 more star for his knowledge. read more

I was on the island for vacation when I found out my prescription for contacts that was given to me back home was wrong. I searched different optical offices on the island to find Dr. Sakamoto's office who actually had my contact prescription in stock. Typically offices would have to special order but I guess luck was on my side just a bit that day. I was told by the receptionist that it would be 25$ for a pair which I was fine with being I couldn't see anyways. When I arrived in the office the receptionist were very kind and full of smiles as I entered in. Dr. Sakamoto heard about my situation and just offered me the pair of contacts free of charge. I was at wow, though it was a small cost and I was willing to pay for the pair it showed how compassionate and understanding this doctor was. I am so glad to have found Dr. Sakamoto and his awesome staff. I was checking the Internet and came across Dr. Sakamoto. I checked and found his office to be right across the street from where I live. I called his office and the young lady who answered was so nice and I was able to see Dr. Sakamoto the next morning. I had a same experience as Darcie wrote review below. To make a review short, the office and staffs are nice enough but they kept making mistakes on orders of eye glass lens for my son. I asked for transitional, bi-focal in the beginning, waited 2 weeks and rec'd one focal non transitional lens. Dr. reordered again, waited 2 weeks and still rec'd wrong lens. 3rd lens arrives and well this time, one of lens wiggles inside the frame. Dr. states he makes sure his lens and frame fits right and told me he will reorder. It's been almost a month now and I do not hear anything from Dr's office. I guess they completely forgot to reorder or intentionally not ordering since I have paid full $564 in the first place and they have nothing to loose. The wiggling lens had popped out of frame twice already. We are moving back to mainland so will not visit this office again but even I stay in Honolulu, I will not be going back to this office again. read more

Dr. Sakamoto is really professional, helpful and knowledgeable. He has state of the art technology to conduct a comprehensive eye exam. He was very patient and meticulous with the eye exam. He helped me find perfect contact lenses and diagnosed the issues I was having with my previous lenses. His eye imaging machine saved me from getting my pupils dilated and he went over the scans of my eye with me in digital format which was really informative. I have been coming here for a few years and Dr. Sakamoto and his staff are all very nice and accommodating. Some of the staff are mostly fluent in Japanese but there is maybe only one that could speak good English. However, they are all very nice and polite. Dr. Sakamoto has all the advanced equipments and machines to run all sorts of tests for your eyes. They even have one where you don't have to dilate your pupils! I find that very convenient. Although, the machines can be hard to maneuver but since I've been coming here for years, I'm used to it. Dr. Sakamoto is very knowledgable and made it easy for me to understand what each of the exams does to make sure my eyes are good and running. I always order my contacts through him. My contacts always come with a rebate. There was one time I tried to apply for the rebate online but it wouldn't go through, so I had to call him up and he was able to fix the problem somehow. He probably made some phone calls. Within a month, I got my rebate! He and the staff provides exceptional customer service and I will definitely come back again. read more
