So a few months ago my computer glasses that I need for work broke so I tried calling my eye doctor to make an appointment to get a new set...the eye doctor that I've been seeing for almost 20 years, but...his number was out of service so I'm assuming he's retired. I haven't gone to see him in close to 4 years so I have no idea. In the search for a new eye doctor that was near me Downtown Vision came up and with really good reviews. Being the holiday season they were busy so it took a month to be able to get an appointment on my day off but it was well worth the wait. Dr. Chun and his wife Mia are terrific! They're both extremely personable and I felt welcomed from the moment I stepped into their office. I ended up getting a pair of progressive bifocal glasses that I can use for work and close reading. I also had my regular distance lenses replaced on my older set and I couldn't be happier with both of them. I have no hesitation recommending them if you're in need of eye care. read more

I am so glad someone recommended Dr Chun!! It was a great start from the appointment scheduling - talking to his wife Mia. Dr Chun is so awesome - you know he is vested in your eye health. He even helped me in choosing the frame to match my face shape! I felt so comfortable throughout the entire appointment! I really encourage you to choose Dr Chun at Downtown Vision!! read more

I told Dr Chun "I'm cured" and we continued to laugh after a fun visit with these blind eyes. Ok, so it has been a while since I have gone in for a eye exam. I have been wearing reader's, constantly, as glasses...basically. My vision has been so bad, I haven't been able to read my phone, a menu, or my computer at work. Jonathan and Mia Chun operate Downtown Vision, located on the ground floor of the Mauka tower at Pacific Guardian Center. A convenient location that I had passed by, and even visited 8+ years ago when it was under previous ownership...and I finally called to make an appointment. Mia was very helpful as I had questions about contact lenses and the time it may take to order glasses. She scheduled an appointment for me and shared details I would need to ask as follow-up questions with Dr Chun. The visit was easy, great in finding the right prescription, and even helpful in explaining my vision and what has happened over time. I was able to try contacts, which I have never done. Dr Chun put them in my eyes, which is very odd, lots of naturally instinctive blinking. Then he had me insert and remove them to ensure it was something I was able to do on my own. Before I left, I had an opportunity to also look at frames. They have a large selection which includes both designer and cost conscious options. I need a specific size, and Dr Chun was very helpful in pointing me in the direction of where those glasses were in each section. He has a great personality and even found a pair that he knew I would like and will be purchasing! I made the plans for the follow-up visits, both for frame purchase, and the contact lenses, since those need to be tested. When I got home wearing the trial contact lenses, I realized what I now look like up close. I have aged, and I guess I may have been saving money all this time not knowing. Next stop, the esthetician! read more

Mia and Dr. Chun run their buisness like I am family. I have had many eye doctors and been in as many clinics. Their shop on Downtown Honolulu is clean and spacious. And the opthamolgic care is head and shoulders above anything I have previously encountered. In addition, they have the best array of frames I have ever seen. I have a type of insurance that covers the frames but not just any frames, Quest frames. Discount frames for Quest patients but the choices are usually bordering on inexpensive and very limited. Not so with Downtown Vision. They have the best choices in the "qualifies for Quest" category. I have always been touched by the aloha spirit during my visits and would seriously go nowhere else. Dr. Chun and Mia have earned my respect, my business and I hope I never have to look for another eye care professional. read more

Incredible. Listen, I hadn't been to the eye doctor in probably half a decade. My vision hadn't gotten any worse in that time, but my insurance sure did better so I decided it was time to find an eye doctor. I was in search for one either by my home or in downtown so I could go in on a day that I was actually in the office. Low and behold, I get a response from my request on their website quick and easy. Set up an appointment the following week and was in the hot seat for a bit. Dr. Chun was actually able to diagnose something in my left eye that may or may not have been disclosed to me in the past, but it explained exactly why my vision in that specific eye is blurry. Not something we can fix through corrective lenses or surgery, unfortunately. About 2 weeks later I emailed him again to set up an appointment as my eyeline had gotten progressively more swollen and purple over 2-3 days. I didn't know what it was, but I knew I needed to get rid of it fast with another set of engagement photo sessions coming up. He prescribed me antibiotics per my request in which I supported with a warm compress 15 minutes, minimum twice daily. Low and behold, less than a week later, It's 95% recovered and we did our photoshoot with no issues. Top-notch service with casual, knowledgeable conversations about what he sees. I hope to have a permanent eye doctor here going forward, no reason to switch. read more

This was by far the best experience I have ever had at an eye doctor's office. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and at ease. Dr. Jonathan Chun's wife, who serves as both the receptionist and technician, is incredibly kind, courteous, and professional. She set up a same-day appointment for me with no hassle and greeted me warmly upon arrival, making me feel right at home. Dr. Chun himself is truly exceptional. He is kind, patient, and extremely thorough. What stood out most is how he takes his time, nothing feels rushed. He explains everything clearly and actually teaches you during your visit, empowering you with knowledge about your eye health. That level of care and communication is rare and so appreciated. Dr. Chun was able to identify the challenges I have been facing and made real-time adjustments based on his knowledge and experience. Instead of walking out with a prescription I wouldn't use (like in the past), I'm genuinely excited to get and use my new glasses. This place is a hidden gem, a real diamond. The teamwork between Dr. Chun and his wife creates a warm, professional, and truly personalized experience. I can't thank them enough. I appreciate you, Dr. Chun. Thank you for listening and for genuinely helping me. read more

Downtown Vision is a family business who take pride in providing great service. I have been seeing Dr. Chun for my annual eye exam for the past few years. Dr. Chun is very knowledgeable and will talk you through the entire process and give you points of what to look out for. I have a family history of glaucoma so he takes extra care to monitor for any signs. I have even brought glasses that I've had previously and were loose and he has helped ro resize and tighten them for me. read more

I just saw Dr. Chun and Mia after 3 years, due to me neglecting my eyes. They gave the same great service and reasonable prices. Conveniently located and I walked away knowing more than I did. I learned something about my eyes and how to take better care. As a State Employee, I recommend Dr. Chun. read more

AMAZING. LIKE ACTUALLY LOL! Dr. Chun is a very chill and knowledgable dude The space itself is nice and clean. Mia is super helpful and friendly!! She's such a sweetheart Dr. Chun is THOROUGH. I've had multiple eye doctors before him where the exams felt pretty rushed, and weren't as communicative as Dr. Chun was. So overall-- COME HERE FOR YOUR EYE NEEDS! I'm super glad I found this place, and I'm excited to return for future eye check ups! I'd give this place a 20/20 (no pun intended XD) read more

They're the best. My optometrist in Kaimuki would make me wait an hour after being seen. It was crazy & I just couldn't do 2 hour appointments when I had to get back to work. So I randomly walked into downtown vision because they were across from my work. AMAZING. So fast, so sweet, pulled up my insurance info right there & within 5 minutes was able to tell me what my best options were. Also, have never had my glasses adjusted so precisely to my face. They fit like a GLOVE. Seriously amazing, can't say enough good things about downtown vision. They even had nose pads for glasses (Asians u know what im talking about). IVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE EVEN CARE TO CARRY THAT FOR THEIR PATIENTS. Tells a lot about how much they care!!!! Thank you!!!! read more

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Downtown Vision is wonderfully operated by Dr. Chun and Mia. I came in for an eye exam for potentially new pair of glasses and help with my strabismus. After a very informative and helpful session, I got a new set that remedied my vision and strabismus. Dr. Chun was well-versed in a lot of topics and very cordial so the appointment went by quickly and smoothly. Additional visits after were just as positive a well! Mia is also super friendly! She was able to explain coverages and payments concisely which took a lot of the stress out visiting a new place for eye care. If you're new to the area or looking for a new optometrist, 100% recommend Downtown Vision. PS, they went through the trouble of recording a guide to find their location (driving and walking) and parking on their site. Very useful! read more

We dropped prescription sunglasses, and the lenses popped out. We found Downtown Vision and were not disappointed. The optometrist and staff were kind, friendly, and informative. We felt they went above and beyond to fit our issue into their schedule, which was much appreciated. Additionally, they were honest about their work and pricing. Although we were only in need of a small fix, based on their customer service, professionalism, and quality of work, we would return for any glasses/eye needs. read more

Best doctor of all time! Doesn't mind helping me understand things and answers all of my questions -Patient. I have a positive experience every visit. read more

Doesn't feel like I'm going to a doctor. Feels like I'm hanging out with a friend who just happens to know a lot about eyes. Dr. Chun explains things in layman's terms without using medical words nobody knows and makes me feel comfortable in asking whatever questions I have. I've asked a handful of questions but I have yet to get an "I'm not too sure" or "let me get back to you." He knows the answers off the top of his head, no matter what the question is. I don't know about you, but to me that's a pretty solid level of knowledge that all doctors should have. Mia is also really great. Both times I've gone in, she acknowledged me immediately, even when she was helping someone else. Great customer service and professionalism from the both of them. read more

While visiting Honolulu from another island and taking care of some business downtown recently, I had a long overdue eye exam done with Dr. Jonathan Chun of Downtown Vision on Oct. 7, 2023. I had no difficulty in scheduling the appointment in advance with his wife Mia, and for once there wasn't any annoying paperwork to fill out once I arrived. He also accepts Medicare reimbursement, so the exam was very close to free for me. The ground floor, street-front practice was super easy to find, and as promised by its website, there was no overcrowded waiting room to deal with. Dr. Chun called me into the comfortable and not over-bright exam room on time, and I found him to be personable and friendly, but also very professional and "no nonsense" in his work. After the exam, he gave me the names of several doctors that I could consider for some follow-up cataract surgery that he strongly recommended based on the results. Since I was a first-time patient, I can't speak to anything beyond eye exams, but for that service I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Chun, especially for people working or living in downtown Honolulu. I found all the statements made on his firm's website to be accurate, so can't think of anything negative to say about his practice based on my one experience there. I moved back to Oahu after living on Big Island for 12 years and really missed my "mom & pop" eyes office. You know... the feeling of Ohana?! Well, it exists in downtown Honolulu . Dr. Chun personally performs the exam, spends time with you to address all of your eye concerns/needs. The selection of glasses is top shelf. After all... I gotta wear my spec's everyday day and my eyes need to feel good and look great! And they do! I'm in love with my new glasses . Mahalo Dr. Chun & Mia... you two Rock! ‍. Make the trip downtown. Downtown Vision Hawaii has been recommended to me by a friend and I could not be happier with the knowledge, professionalism and service I've been met with. My visits with Dr Chun have been comfortable, fun, educational and very beneficial. Both Dr Chun and his lovely wife made me feel more like a friend they like to help rather than just a customer, which I appreciate very much. I won't be going to any other optometrist than here and I can only recommend you to give it try yourself! Thank you so much for everything Dr Chun =) read more

Excellent experience with Dr. Chun who is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I visited when his wife was out of town so he was short handed and pulled in all directions when I was getting my exam. He was very apologetic about having to break away to take a call or address incoming customers. It didn't happen a lot so I wasn't bothered but I appreciate that he valued my time - which we all know, rarely happens. The eye exam was very thorough and he let me come back at the end of the day to get my eyes dilated. I never felt rushed through my appointment and felt comfortable asking questions or talking about other options. Downtown vision was able to take my HMSA insurance so I ordered a long awaited new pair of frames with my new prescription. Dr. Chun took time and care to ensure a perfect fit for my glasses. I have to say there are some optometrists that I've seen through out the years that are simply in it for just a business... and some just have a God-given gift... Thus, Dr. knew exactly the corrections that needed to be made right away, the services were quick and easy. They shared the Aloha Spirit and it was comfortable during my appointment. Let me start off by saying how AWESOME Dr. Chun and Mia are!! My husband and I could never find a decent optometrist on the island. They live up to their great ratings!! We felt very taken care of!!! read more

Recently went to Downtown Vision to get new glasses. The office staff is polite and friendly and very helpful. Dr Chun is particularly helpful and I found him to be the sort of person who would explain things and if he wasn't sure that you understood he'd explain it in a way that you personally could get it and to me that's not always so easy when it comes to medical things but he made it plain and I understood it well. They have a good selection of frames but you can use your old frames and they're cool with that. They don't try pitch you to get new ones. I did get new ones though and it only took a week to get them. I'd recommend them highly. read more

Decided to come here to get eye exam and renew my contacts/glasses prescription. First off let just me just say. Dr. Chun is such a nice guy. He's super ok personable. Treats you like a patient and NOT a transaction. Those kind of doctors are hard to find now days. He takes the time to thoroughly check your eyes. Answer any questions/concerns you may have. He alssb takes the time to help you find the right eye glasses frames. I highly recommend Dr. Chun. read more

I have to give Dr.Chun and wife 5 Stars mainly because they're super down to earth and easy to work with. I don't really go get my eyes checked yearly as I should so when my eye sight starts to get kinda wonky that's my cue to make an appointment. Unfortunately for me I've been floating around between doctors because I have never really been satisfied with the service I've received in the past. That all changed when I found Dr. Chun. My inital visit was a breeze and he was super informative when I had brought up my concerns. And idk where the hell I've been but I mean I've never had an eye doctor custom bend my glasses to fit my weird shaped head lol like I was taken back by that. Im mostly Asian so of course I don't have a bridge to support most glasses and I usually have issues with fit and never did my doctors in the past offer to adjust the arms or bend the nose pads to fit perfectly. Mind blown So yeah needless to say just come here if you want great service and a super cool wife and husband team to work with. read more

I had my new glasses adjusted at my optometrist on Saturday, but when I wore them at home, it was uncomfortable. It was hard to adjust them since I was wearing a mask. Since I work above Downtown Vision, I thought I'd stop by on Monday to see if they could adjust it for me. Mia did a perfect job of adjusting my glasses and did not charge me! I went down twice and Mia was so kind and told me to keep coming back if it still did not feel right. I told her where and how it felt uncomfortable and she knew where the problems were and fixed them! read more

Wow, wow, wow! Dr. Chun is the very best Optometrist I've been to in my 30 years of contact and glasses use. Upon entering the office for my appointment, I was greeted with a temperature check and a squirt of hand sanitizer. The entire office is well sanitized and spotless. Dr. Chun is very attentive, professional, thorough, and extends his aloha and care with the highest level of service. My examination was little over an hour. He explained every process in detail and explained his diagnosis in a simple form to clearly understand. But the most important, after seeing 3 other doctors with my same concern. "I don't seem to see things at a distance". None of the other doctors changed my prescription in 10 years. His original diagnosis prior to my prescription recommendation was that I shouldn't be driving. Which I felt for many years but 3 doctors said I was fine. But with Dr. Chun's help, I CAN NOW SEE!!! I'm so happy! Dr. Chun also took the time to readjust my old pair of glasses. I wish all places of businesses gave the level of service and aloha Dr Chun gives! I highly recommend Dr. Johnathan Chun! Note: I rarely give 5 stars reviews but with Dr Chun I wish I could give 10 stars! read more

So highly recommend this practice. It's a small practice (one doctor and one staff), so you get extremely personalized service. Feels like concierge medicine. Mia is extremely professional and organized and had all of my intake paperwork sitting in front of her when I arrived. Booking the appointment with her on the phone was also quick and easy, as was check-out/payment. Dr. Chun was awesome. Took a lot of time with me, explained everything very clearly, and was very clearly invested in making sure I got the perfect prescription. This was a completely different experience than my prior eye exams elsewhere that felt pretty rushed. I was blown away by all the different tests and tools he uses during a standard eye exam; things I've never seen before. Definitely feel like I got a thorough work up. Beautiful location (street parking was a breeze) and nice shop with a great selection of glasses. I will definitely be returning here. read more
