Mexico's gift to the world is tacos and the very best of these is brought to you by Carnitas Las…read moreMichoacanas in Orem. Prepare yourself for a trip south of the border to the Mexican state of Michoacán located just under 100 miles west of Mexico City. There you will be in the one of several disputed origins of the melt-in-your mouth "pulled pork" of Mexico known as carnitas. By a stroke of serendipity, I found myself on State Street in Orem when I caught the word carnitas emblazoned on the side of an otherwise unremarkable little eatery. I made it a point to check it out after watching a ballet performance at the SCERA theater. As you can already surmise, I was not disappointed. Walking inside I was met by a friendly taquero and tables filled with native Spanish speakers. All signs said thus was going to be good. I chose a combo plate with two massive, stuffed carnitas tacos and a carne asada street-sized taco. Although it was quite tasty, the asada was just an afterthought for me. After pouring on some spicy salsa roja and a guacamole sauce with a topping of onions and cilantro I tucked into the best or at least top-3 carnitas tacos I've ever had. This is from someone who searches out this porcine delicacy wherever I travel. (See my other review of a surprising contender in the Lava Hot Springs KOA-Taqueria Pelayo-I'm not kidding.) The rest of the best are in California. You can get your carnitas "mixtos" or "solo carne." If you're not into skin, fat and offal, stick with the straight carne, The taquero knows that the best carnitas is given a crispy finish and coarsely chopped. After spying the home style refritos and arroz on a neighboring table, I went back for sides. Who needs a diet anyway? All told, I couldn't have been happier. Great food, friendly service with good English but willing to allow a gringo the opportunity to practice Spanish - I only wish it was closer to my home in South Jordan. LMK if you can recommend a similar spot in SLC or surrounds.

I've been wanting to try Kitchen Eighty-Eight in Pleasant Grove and finally stopped by! Overall,…read moreit's a great addition to the local food scene and a perfect spot for when you want a meal that feels less fast-food and higher quality. I ordered the Beet Salad with Chicken and it was delicious. The ingredients were fresh, and the chicken was cooked perfectly--it's a great choice if you're looking for something light but filling. We also got a side of sweet potato fries. While the flavor was there, they definitely could have used another minute or two in the fryer for some extra crunch, and a little more salt to really make them pop. That being said, the meal was still very enjoyable! It's a clean, inviting space with a menu that has something for everyone. I'll definitely be back to try one of their tri-tip sandwiches next time!

The mashed potatoes are pretty good, but they have a little too much seasoning for my taste. The broccolini is disappointing, however. It comes out cold and almost raw. It's so hard you have to cut it with a knife. The stalks are almost inedible. I love broccolini so I hope management sees this and makes some changes. It would also be nice if this plate came with a dinner roll. Overall, I recommend K88 for a fine dining experience.
