I recently took a very delicate and expensive old map here to be framed. I asked very explicitly for how to frame it best in order to protect it, and was assured that the options I chose would best protect it. After, the map began to warp, and I found out that real professionals would have framed it in a very different way (with a matte to keep it taut, with more space between the glass). The customer service was terrible, and while the young woman behind the desk was nice, it took forever to get an answer on what was happening to my map, and even longer to get in touch with the owner, who put me off for several days as I asked about getting a refund. She ultimately refused to offer any refund, any apology, anything except adding the matte, which still wouldn't do much as the glass needs to be further from the paper to allow for more circulation. I took many other non-delicate items here for framing and it was fine, but do not take anything valuable to be framed and do not expect any customer service if something goes wrong. read more

Overpriced, shoddy job, and terrible customer service. Do not waste your time and money here. We wanted to support our local business and went to frame our print. We picked out a frame (from their very small selection) and they placed our print in it. We picked it up a couple days later and were happy thus far. BUT a few weeks later, we noticed the picture had fallen from its place. The picture was just wedged in the frame and wasn't even taped on. My husband brought it back to get it fixed but they refused to help saying that we needed our original receipt. It was weeks ago so we had already thrown it away, and they refused to trust a credit card statement and denied ever taking us as customers. They obviously have no clue how good service can generate good word of mouth. We overpaid for a crappy job that they won't even admit to taking or doing. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. read more

I went here for the convenience, as it's very close to my home. Not sure if there's been a change in management here, but this was one of the worst customer experiences I've had in a very long time. I went in a couple of weeks ago to have a very basic job done - mat with two windows, no hinging - and it cost a whopping $30 plus tax. They told me it would be ready in two days. I went back, and they said it would be another day. Then another day after that. When I finally received the mat, the windows were uneven, and they didn't even back the mat with another mat, just some throwaway cardboard. I've had more than two dozen similar jobs at other frame shops around the city, and it's never cost more than $20, including hinging and a backing mat. Very disappointed - you can do much better elsewhere. read more

Find another place. There's nothing else around? Figure it out. NUTSHELL: They're way overpriced, bizarrely slow, and somewhat incompetent. DETAILS: We needed 5 mats cut (ranging in size from 5x8 to 24x32), and one small piece of glass (a standard 8x10 replacement sheet). The cost for the mats was $147 (no glass, no frames, no backing... just mats.) After 2 and half weeks, they called to say the order was ready. I picked it up, got home and realized they forgot the glass piece we needed altogether. After checking the sales slip, it turns out that the guy never wrote it down to begin with after measuring the frame in-store, etc. Which, in hindsight, was a blessing in disguise. We probably would have paid something stupid for it, and now we can just get it elsewhere. VERDICT: Find another place. read more

Like others I wish I had read the reviews before coming here. I brought in my own frame and just needed the matte and glass put on. It took way longer than they said. I called at the time they said it would be ready. I was told she'd call me back in a few minutes. 2 days later I called again, they said it hadn't been started but would be done that evening (Thursday). Today is Sunday. I called on my way to pick it up, they said it wasn't done yet but to give her 15 minutes. I went 45-60 minutes later and they said "give me a minute". I asked for what, and they explained it wasn't ready. She didn't say anything to me after that until I asked her if she even cared how bad the service was. Go somewhere else. read more

I spent months trying to track down this out-of-print old school map of Brooklyn that my husband really loved as a gift, and finally scored it on eBay. My first visit to the framing shop was very positive - the saleswoman was really helpful with what kind of frame I should use, and went back and forth with me for awhile as I made up my mind. She then said they could probably even rush it a few days earlier, which was great. When I called back a few days ahead of the agreed upon pick-up date, the guy who picked up the phone was very abrasive and downright rude. He said it wouldn't be done by the time we had agreed upon, and he refused to tell me how long it would take exactly. And it ended with me basically saying, "I can't believe you treat your customers like this," and him smarting back to me and me hanging up. I was totally shocked. I had already paid more than half of the $700 payment to frame this! Fast forward to a year later, and the quality is not good at all. The wood frame has warped so it no longer lies flat against the wall, and the poster itself is bubbling up. I'm really bummed because once the print is ruined, it'll be hard for me to find another, and I've bought framed pieces from garage sales that look more professional. I'll never go back to this place again, and would not recommend it to anyone. The only reason it gets two stars is because the first woman who helped me was awesome. read more

I really wanted to support a business in the neighborhood but after the shoddy customer service I got, I'm not sure I can really recommend this place. The store never called when my print was ready, claimed they had tried and that my voicemail wasn't working (even though I asked them to try it in store and it was fine) and then misplaced my print when I was finally ready to pick it up. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with 7th Ave Framing. After dropping my print off I did not hear from them so after 2 weeks I reached out. They said they were going to look into it and get back to me. After not hearing back after a few more days I decided to go there in person. The girls at the front desk said that they needed to check with the framer and they would get back to me. A few more days went by. I called again and finally was able to talk to the framer directly and surprisingly, she wasn't aware of any of this. Years ago I had a large number of pieces done here, and while it was pricey they did a great job. So, despite to poor reviews I decided to use them again. BIG MISTAKE. They must have changed hands or something, because the workmanship has gone from great to worse than poor. Back in November I drooped off a large poster to be matted and framed. I was shocked by the $700 price tag but was OK considering it's a large piece and I picked out a very nice frame to make this statement piece in my home. w week or two later I got a call that the mat I selected wasn't available in a large size. But they said they could piece together 2 mats and I wouldn't be able to tell. It took another month for it to be ready. Needless to say the matting issue was very obvious. But in their defense they did offer to replace the mat for free. It took 6 weeks for the to re-mat the poster and it was free. but after getting it home I've discovered that they damaged the $700 frame in not one but two places. so 3 months and $700 later I've got a damaged frame and a second choice mat. I tried calling them, but since they have the most limited store hours I've ever heard of they're closed. Maybe it's blessing since another try might result in them damaging the poster too. be sure to sort their reviews by date to see what they are currently like. I used to think 7th Avenue Framing was pricey. But the folks who run this shop recently did three things so nice I have to issue an atta-girl commendation! No. 1: I recently smashed a piece of glass in a 5-by-7 frame. I took it to 7th Avenue Framing, and they replaced the glass for free. Who does that anymore? No. 2: I had to remove a picture from a frame they'd assembled for me years ago. They helped me get the picture out of the frame, then put it back in including sealing up the back with the brown paper and only charged me $5! No. 3: I recently took a new image in for framing. Turned out that the gold frame I selected was out-of-stock. Bummer. But they called me right away to advise me, and THEN.... a day later, they called to say they'd shopped around and found the same frame elsewhere. Great service coming and going! I'd give 5 stars, but I want them to carry more stock frames and have more complete inventory of some standard items, like black, silver and gold frames in all sizes. That said, the folks who own and run this place are very VERY nice people trying to do the right thing. Patient. Professsional. Courteous. Most important, they do a quality job. Top-notch. read more

When I called to ask about the status, the young man who answered the phone insinuated I must must have missed a call from them. "Ma'am," he said, getting impatient, "We call everyone, and everyone says they didn't get a call when they got a message." Believe me: 7th Avenue Framing did not call, did not leave a message, and I don't appreciate the attitude from the kid who answered the phone. I had a framed print that fell off the wall and was damaged. The glass was broken and the metal frame was bent. The stock of metal didn't match the original color (it was framed years prior out of state), but I was told it might be possible to rework it. They were able to bend frame back into place with only a minimal amount of imperfection remaining, which was placed on top and out of view. New plexiglass was cut, and the piece looks as good as it was prior to me dropping it. The money saved was substantial. I have since had several things framed there and have been pleased with the work and price. read more

Previous reviewers were right. I always like to give businesses the benefit of the doubt but the service was really terrible here, unfortunately. I came in wanting to frame a letter, in anything but a black frame, which apparently was too much of a task for a framing shop. They had only one style of frame. Couldn't tell me when or if or how they would get more in. Also couldn't tell me where else I might find one: "I have no idea," the sales rep laughed. And I wasn't going to create a custom frame for what she quoted to be up to a hundred dollars or more to frame this letter. Silliness. Then she said I could buy a larger frame and just choose a mat and they would fit it. Not entirely sure why she suggested this as they also only had black in the larger frames. No further solutions were offered, and I left the framing shop with my letter, unframed. read more

I went here bc it's right near my house, but I should have looked at these reviews first. I also found their turnaround time bizarrely long. When my framed picture finally came back, it looked tacky and cheap. The owner nicely agreed to do a different frame. Unfortunately, the frame looks damaged; the wood is cracked and flaking. I think the shop just uses really poor quality material or something. Framing is expensive, and I'm willing to pay for quality work, but this is probably the worst framing job I've ever had done. read more

I came by here today to drop off some frames I built. They were very willing to cut the mats and seal them up with the hanging wire. Unlike other framers in the area who said they wouldn't work with my frames. But as a woodworker I can build an excellent frame. I just don't understand why anywhere would turn down money to cut a mat. This place is very friendly. Easy going and affordable. I plan on coming back in the future as my girlfriend and I accumulate more art. read more

I've been doing business with 7th Avenue Framing for the last two years (probably have framed 5 or 6 paintings during this time) and have had nothing but very positive experiences all along. There was one instance where I got my framed artwork home and noticed a fuzz ball floating in the space between the painting and the matting and they graciously took it back, had it reframed for no charge and with a quick turnover! Their pricing is slightly higher than other shops but I think that reflects in their work and customer service. I will use them time and time again. read more

The first time it took about 2 weeks, but the second time the woman who helped me offered to do it the same day! I went to do some errands, came back 90 minutes later and it was ready to go! I'm an art historian, so I like to think that I know what looks good! I've brought several extremely valuable pieces of art here, and all I can say is WOW. The staff is so knowledgeable and kind - I always feel like my art is in good hands. The work that I have brought required lots of discussion about what looks best, since some will end up in museums. This fall, my friend and I had a much-better-than-expected experience with this shop. She bought an 18x24" silkscreen from me and wanted to have it professionally framed. First she tried a 'bargain' frame shop in Sunset Park, with an online coupon. Quick lesson: beware of bargains - the selection was poor. I suggested several shops that we could go to. We started at 7th Ave with my caveat: this was a top-dollar place. What a pleasant surprise! The prices were at least comparable to the bargain factory, and the selection was SO much better. We were also fortunate with our associate - I don't know her name, but she's blond, and has a very good eye. I'd thought that it would be a difficult picture to find a frame for, especially on a budget. She had at least 5-6 legitimate and appealing frames. We got so excited when we found the perfect frame! The search ended there, so we never got to any of the other places. In summary: The customer service was wonderful, the price, although not cheap, was fair, and the curated selection was all that we could ask for. read more

I have a lot of items I need framed for my office. I went in here in late August 2012 and an African-American gentleman was so impolite that I left. When I say "impolite" what I mean is, I walked in, he just stared at me after I smiled and said hi. And I said "um, hello?" and he said "Yes?" That was our interaction. There is nothing more of a turn off to me than an employee with an attitude and doesn't have the common sense to have basic manners. I make a damn good living and I was ready to throw down what I know would have been around $800. Worse yet, I live around the corner and I will now go somewhere else, because I don't want to deal with someone that rude. HIRE QUALITY PEOPLE. read more

I have to say that my experience here was excellent. I had a very complicated job - a custom shadowbox for a 75th birthday gift - and was frankly concerned that no framing store would be able to pull it off successfully. It had a lot of objects that had to be glued into place and handled with great care. Claudia was phenomenal. She truly cared about doing an amazing job - her note taking and measurements ensured a perfect result. And when there needed to be a slight adjustment to the finished product (through no fault of hers) Claudia did not hesitate to make it right. The shadowbox was amazing. I do agree that the store is not cheap, but I think that superior customer service is worth paying for. I am so glad I chose them - originally for their convenient location, now for their quality. I brought in a very difficult piece to be framed, a panel of jersey fabric from an old dance costume. When picking up, I was not completely happy with the results; no fault of theirs, but it didn't look quite right to my eye. Mario, the owner, worked diligently with me to come up with a solution and Lee, the framer, was also extremely helpful. I really appreciate their efforts. This shop has been in the community for 22 years and they do their utmost to satisfy their customers. Their prices are reasonable and they do excellent, custom work. I was initially a little worried after I left a picture needing to be framed at the store. I wasn't really sure what I wanted for a frame and was hoping for some guidance from these folks. who presumably do this for a living. A middle-aged gentleman was behind the counter but he said he wasn't into making decisions for customers when I asked him if he had any suggestions. Oooook? It was much pricer than I expected, but I don't know how their prices compare to other local establishments. Nonetheless, I got a call less than 2 weeks after dropping the picture off that it was ready. Asked for some pieces to be matted. All I got was the mat itself -- no backing! Plus, the mat was cut exactly to the size of then pieces, with no allowance, so when I tried to put backing on myself at home, it was a very frustrating experience. $100 bucks for three pieces of cardboard. IF YOU VALUE YOUR ART, DO NOT FRAME HERE. I framed some artworks here a few years back. It was only when I began going to a more high-end framer -- who took these works apart and out of the frames -- that I realized the damage these people did to my work: damage that affects the art itself, the resale value, everything. If you value your art, do not frame it here! They are fine for posters or a family photo, but not for archival, safe, msueum-grade framing. I had a limited edition photo framed, and they used double-sided tape ON THE BOARD THE ARTIST HAD SIGNED. This now means the artist's work/signature has acidic adhesive on it, forever. I can never sell the work for what it was once worth. The other work I framed, it was the same thing -- tape (and not archival tape) was affixed to the actual photo. Unbelievable! Upon de-framing these works, experienced conservators cringed. It cost me hundreds to have a conservator remove these tapes/adhesives and have the work CLOSE to back to normal (though it will never be the same). Again, if its something minor, they do a good job. But if your art is valuable, if the framing needs to stand the test of time, or if it's a sentimental object you're framing, avoid this seemingly affordable local framer! It will "cost" you a lot more than you ever thought. My advice is to take your work somewhere they really know how to do fully-reversable, archival framing. It will be more expensive than 7th Ave initially, but your work will be in much better hands. read more

I have had a number of things framed here and I have always had great results. I like the service too, because they work with me to look at possibilities for framing until it works. I know this is always a huge investment and its a luxury to be able to have anything like a custom frame. If we can use a stock frame and some good matting to get a result that's nice that's what we do. I read some negative reviews and I guess when you work with real people in a non corporate atmosphere it's bound to have less cookie cutter perfection. I'd rather be put out for a few moments of my time because I am spending my money locally in a community store than be treated as less than human by a huge corporation. But that just me. I really like the last framIng they did for me a lot. And that was in November this year. These folks just took it over when the art store was closed down. I am so so glad this place didn't close down too. I wish the art store was still there, but we still have a nice place for frames in the neighborhood. read more

I honestly wasn't going to use this frame shop because of the negative reviews that I read, but since they were the only shop open on the day I impulsively needed a newspaper article framed, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and try them out. I was pleasantly surprised. The man who helped me with my order was helpful and knew a lot more than I did about what looked nice and what didn't work. This was my first time getting something framed and I was worried I would come off as an idiot. But I felt confident after the interaction with him that what I ordered would be A-okay! He put a rush on my order so it would be ready for my gf's birthday the next week. Unfortunately it didn't quite make it in time, but that was fine with me. I knew it was my own fault for waiting until the week before her birthday to get started on the presents! I was nervous about the final result, just from reading the reviews, but in the end I had no reason to be. The piece came out lovely and was perfect for her. The only thing that was hard to stomach was the price. I hate being the person saying something is too expensive, I get it, we live in NY. But it was more than I hoped to spend. That is not to say that i wouldn't spend it again if I knew how perfectly it was going to come out. read more

DO NOT BUY MATS FROM THIS SHOP!!!! TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL! I went in here and made a huge order of 40 mats for an exhibition I was having. I really wanted to support a local small business for the order. The mats came back dirty with pencil marks on every single one. They packaged them poorly and all of the corners were bent and ruined. I returned them and they agreed to recut the mats more professionally. When I got them back again, they still had pencil lines on them that were rubbing off on my fingers. I showed them and they said- this is how it works, there has to be pencil lines. I can't understand this as I imagine paying $20 a mat would give me pristine perfectly clean sheets. I spoke with the manager who was frankly aggressive and rude and offered me a 10% discount at most. Now I am sitting erasing every mat as I frame the artwork... what a bummer. (also to top it all off, I went when it opened at 10am and waited 20 minutes until the woman arrived to open up the shop- so unreliable) read more
