Don't come in here ever still scamming people charging more than actual price and short changing on top of it.

Neighborhood Coffee is one of my favorite cafes in all of the Bay Area. Just don't tell anyone…read morebecause I want it to be one of our best kept secrets. Shhhh...! (It was worth the 13 mile drive for me.) With floor to ceiling windows welcoming in the comfort of daylight and warmth of Californian sunshine (thank you A/C), this cafe sits high above Castro Valley overlooking the distant hills and the bay, depending on where you sit. It's in the front space of a church and upon walking in (my third visit), I feel held by the Lord. Strangely, I'm feeling tears well up because this is the exact sort of space I've been needing as I go through some challenging life circumstances. It is peaceful here but it also has a vibrant community energy on a Thursday late morning. This space is welcoming to all of the bay are community and if you didn't know it was a church, you would never know. It's for the whole neighborhood and beyond. There are tall round tables, bar tables, normal round tables, armchairs at tables, long barnhouse style tables. This space was thoughtfully curated to allow for relationships to be grown, work to be done, and quiet time to be experienced. The Americano I had is nice and strong (whoowee... I'm awake now!). They had interesting drink options and some baked goods. Prices were average for the Bay Area. I love that the cafe supports community outreach. From the web, it partners with this church and community programs. It seems to operate around community support and social impact initiatives. I love that they actively support Inclusion & Autism awareness and medical debt relief (WOW!). This is a cafe that is doing it right!

Service just ended so a lot of cars were leaving as we arrived. Don't recommend getting in line right after service because I waited over 30 minutes just to get two drinks. The lavender lemonade was very refreshing and not too sweet. The matcha latte on the other hand tasted watered down, so I could barely taste the matcha, super disappointing. It was a nice and sunny day so we decided to sit outside. The inside was very spacious, but I was overstimulated from all of people talking, especially when I was waiting in line. A good spot to stop by to grab a drink and enjoy the view outside if you're in the area. Glad I meet the time to check this place out.

Their baos are hot and ready to go and offer such an easy and quick snack/meal. They have a wide selection of sandwiches, banh mi, matcha, smoothies, and coffee as well as bottled teas and drinks. The bread was decent, ingredients were fresh, and the lemongrass chicken had good flavor. The pickled daikon and carrots, jalapenos, and cilantro were all fresh although the sandwich seemed a little light on filling. It's a decent banh mi, but I've had better. The menu goes well beyond banh mi with Korean style corn dogs, spring rolls, noodle bowls, mochi donuts, boba, Vietnamese coffee, smoothies, and various snacks. I can't speak to most of it from this visit alone, but there's plenty to come back and try on a future visit. Service is quick counter service. Staff was friendly and efficient. Nothing that stood out but no complaints either. The space is wide and open with plenty of seating and a grab and go snack rack in the middle of the floor. Despite the room to sit, it feels more like a grab and go spot than somewhere you'd settle in for a meal. Worth a stop if you're craving a casual lunch or snack.

There is parking available in the lot that they share with Denny's next door. I would believe they are usually busy when the college across from them is in session. We came when it seemed busy but my sister in law order online for us while we hung outside where there are a few tables. They don't have sitting inside so just know you will be ordering to go. The drink I got was ok. I like Vietnamese coffee but as a frappe, I'll stick to the regular way. I finished it the next day but added to it and mixed it. I tasted my brother's drink of a strawberry colada. Yummy, will get that next time. There were stuffy toys inside but I don't know if it is for sale. The wait for our order wasn't bad but they are a bit pricey so definitely a treat if you plan to try. I see this boba joint in a few different cities. The one I went to in Manteca has indoor seating.

The last time I had Teaspoon was years ago when I was in Davis, and I always ordered the Grasshopper. I decided to get the same drink this time to see if it had changed. The Grasshopper is a lychee green tea topped with cucumber juice. It was light, refreshing, and perfect for a warm day. I forgot to adjust the sweetness level, so it ended up being a bit sweeter than I would have liked.

The coffeeshop feels hidden as this Hippies Brew location is off an exit from Highway 92. Is the coffee and food still as tasty as I remembered? Yes. The names of the espresso drinks have an urban feel yet their drinks are not overly sweet. Unlike most coffeehouses there are not a lot of food items - as only three breakfast items are served. Yet I would counter the food at Hippies Brew is better than those places as the three items served here are hot. The McLovin Muffin is a small, hearty breakfast sandwich to start in the morning. If you want a filling breakfast I suggest the Freakin French Toast with egg and ham. Coffeeshops should have their own signature coffee. Most of the time I at Hippies Brew I would order a variation of white mocha like White Iverson or Yonce. However the Rick Ross with the cinnamon makes the drink taste like hot chocolate. After a couple of visits to this location I can see myself coming to Hippies Brew again.
