There are some things you don't see every day: inverted rainbows, unicycling bagpipers, hip seafood and steak places with an entire vegan menu--record scratch. Did I just say hip steak and seafood place with a dedicated vegan menu? I absolutely did.
6Smith is a unicorn in this sense. While it's primarily a place to go for seafood, steak, and drinks, they have a full vegan menu as well. I am absolutely not kidding you! The items on the vegan menu are innovative and creative: herbivores are clearly not an afterthought here. But let's back up a minute, because this place has an awful lot of other things going for it beyond the menu.
The ambiance is unique. I thought for a bit about how to describe it. It's somewhere between industrial, rustic, and chic. While it's definitely modern, there are classic touches that make it feel sophisticated. (One downside is that it's quite loud in there. I'd recommend trying to get a spot outside or in a booth to make it easier to have a conversation. My friend also thought the chairs were a bit uncomfortable, but I didn't notice.) If you're an Xennial, you'll love the music: they'll play at least one of your jams.
In addition to the vegan menu, they have an extensive selection of wines, spirits, and beers, plus an innovative set of cocktails. (In the classic and modern vein, they have traditional and "twist on" versions of many classic cocktails. I'm coming back here for drinks sometime!)
As I said above, the menu is impressive. Someone in the kitchen knows how to use fire for sure--both the bread and the cauliflower were enhanced by the use of beautiful char. It added texture and flavor to the extent that it felt like a seasoning itself. On the bread, it added an extra texture and helped enhance the natural sweetness of the bread and the flavors of the accompaniments (order the bread service--you won't regret it). On the cauliflower, it made the texture of each little nub stand out beautifully, and it stood up well to the richness and spice of the sauce.
I ordered a cup of soup off the vegan menu. It was absolutely amazing. It was not only beautiful but also delicious. It was the right blend of sweet and acidic, and the texture was truly remarkable. (It was legit creamy.) I regretted not getting a bowl. (I'd suggest a carafe if they offered it.)
For my main, I asked the waitress for help choosing between the mushroom tacos and the roasted vegetable bruschetta. She suggested the bruschetta. Like everything else that we ordered, this was a beautiful sight to behold, and again with the textures! The veggies included mushrooms (delicious!) and colorful root veggies. These were served atop some more of the baguette and a fluffy bit of avocado heaven. This came alongside a salad dressed with a lemon vinaigrette. The vinaigrette was sweeter than I would usually like, but the greens mix featured lots of radicchio and other bold leaves, so it worked well.
For dessert, I ordered a Brandy Alexander the Great (yummy; highly recommend), and my friend got the apple crisp. The apple crisp did take awhile (they're baked to order, I think), which we didn't know until after we ordered it. If you're having dinner before another event or otherwise are on a time crunch, I'd recommend letting your server know so that they can advise you if a particular dish might take a bit longer.
Speaking of which, the service was friendly and helpful. I think they were down a staff member or two, so as the restaurant got busier, things got a bit slower, but everyone who came to our table was absolutely delightful.
This is a great place to go if you have something to celebrate with your friends. I definitely think I will be coming back for a Happy Hour and quite possibly a brunch, even though I am not a morning food person. read more
