What it is: Awesome local bar that caters to the local folks in the neighborhood and occasionally a group having an event in the area on the weekends. It's an eclectic and vibrant scene that includes artists, producers, musicians, film makers, furniture designers, poets, photographers etc. those are just the friends I've met here. Bartenders are competent, friendly and solid human beings. Each with their own personality and ability to have a lively discussion while they play their own favorite playlists on the sound system. It's like 4 different bar's depending on your bartender and days if the week are like chapters of different books, written by the same writer. Jay St Bar is your standard(in a good way) local bar that had good drinks for a reasonable price and laid back atmosphere. My family trio popped in here after walking from apt through Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Dumbo flea market so we were parched and in need of liquid barley fuel. What was cool was they had a Star Wars trivia starting, and we played for one round before I realized I don't know NEARLY as much about Star Wars as I thought. They had paper masked which were fun so my Lil Bean transformed into BB-8 for the time being. When I do my weekend stroll, I will definitely come back for another friendly visit. read more

This is part classy local haunt, part dive bar. The drinks are nothing fancy but there's a lot of space and the ambience is cool. I'm pretty sure they have good drink specials, too. A solid dive bar somewhat hidden in this area of Dumbo. There are a lot of bars and restaurants in this neighborhood that elevate their prices due to the high influx of tourists and generally wealthy residents, but Jay St. Bar keeps it pretty real. It's a pretty stark place with some local art on the walls, but not much going on besides that. Almost looks like they began a buildout and said, "screw it--lets just sell some beer." We were taking a walk around Dumbo last night where my brother had his previous office and after enjoying the city view for a while, we decided to sit for couple of beers so he took us to 68 Jay St Bar. There is no sign saying the name of the place so once we walked it, as a typical Yelper, I was like " what's the name of this place?" :) It was just as simple as the building number and the street name. 68 Jay St :) "Simple" definitely would summarize this bar, no fancy stuff. Wooden stools, wooden coffee type of tables, plain beer glasses, minimum light, clean bathrooms. We paid $30 for 5 beers, quite reasonable. It has 2 saloons by the way, bar area is more alive. It's a crap shoot here. Sometimes it's Kate or Julian or the woman who plays music (forgot her name) working behind the bar and they're amazing. Other times it's some curly haired woman who asks why you're getting a margarita during happy hour and acting incredulous that she has to mix a drink. Apparently the stress of working behind a bar gets to her--she should find another job. And then there's the huge open windows with smokers sitting RIGHT in front of it, wafting smoke into the bar, which usually smells like mildew. And the owner sits outside not giving a damn. Nothing I say will make this place fail because the standards in dumbo are so damn low that this place can thrive just because it had a happy hour and thanks to those first three bartenders. So far my experience has been okay. I am still on my first beer and the place has a pretty decent crowd for a bar who was as lazy with their decor as they were with naming the bar. Honestly, this place is nothing special yet I felt the need to come here while I was walking by. There is a very diverse crowd for older business type, bearded artsy guy, unwelcoming punk chick's and Joe Shmoe. The selection of drinks is okay as far as beer goes. I have noticed a lot of people have been commenting about the service and bartender. I see the attitude, I most definitely do but look at the place and realize where you are. I expect my service to not be the best. In closing, the bar is sub par but I would come back probably because the bartender hates the people here as much as I do. My first time here was a terrible experience, it's a nice little bar on the corner, not the cleanest but def not the worst. It's your average nyc bar. The service however was abysmal (means horrible) that bar tender, I believe her name is Jen is ridiculously rude. Met up with an old coworker last week for a quick pre-wedding (his, like I would really be getting married) drink. It was a half-way meeting point for both of us and seemed convenient to just go to Dumbo and insanely close to my office. I must say, there isn't a whole lot of nightlife in Dumbo and the area is a work in progress. But this is a solid dive bar. No food. No frills. No gimmicks with a solid happy hour that ends at 7pm: $3 Narragansett cans, $4 Brooklyn Lager, $5 wells/wine. Not a whole lot on tap - Only the aforementioned plus Stella and Lagunitas IPA. Pours on wells/wine are strong and huge. The ambiance - dim lighting - people we noted were either dressed down in small groups or really dressed up and probably on blind dates after work. read more

The most unwelcoming bar I've ever been to. Stood awkwardly at bar for several moments despite their being only 1 patron besides my spouse and I before having to ask for a menu/draft beer selection. When we walked in, we weren't even greeted with a smile nor acknowledged in any way. As far as the environment and location of the place goes, it's very cozy especially by the fireplace. Unfortunately the beauty of this place was ruined by the unwelcoming nature of our bartender. For the record, I still left a tip as I can't let my bad experience dictate my lack of support toward someone else's livelihood. Actually, the only thing wrong with 68 Jay St Bar is you (or me in this case). Its just... Clearly I don't belong here. The bartender got mad at me when I asked what whiskey they had in the bottles behind the bar. Its not really her fault, I was dressed all Manhattan-y, and didn't even realize that that was a thing until I walked into 68 Jay st bar and then it became obvious that that is DEFINITELY a thing. So I did what any grown man would do in that situation: ran away into the other room and didn't buy any more drinks the rest of the night. I hid, in shame, and I can only assume everyone else was happier as a result. Everyone else seemed happy there so I can't hate. I think it could very much be your kind of place. But for me it didn't have any thing that I wanted to drink. Really, I'm giving it two stars because it seems like the type of place that does better without the type of people who use yelp (what type is that? I don't know... just the type who don't fit in at this bar). I swore off writing bad reviews soon after drafting this one. There are already more than enough haters on Yelp... so this review has been sitting on my account partially finished for a while. But in this case... I get the feeling that 68 Jay st Bar doesn't mind reviews that will keep the new people out. So if you belong, you are going to love this place, at least in part because I won't be there. Having worked in the area a couple of times in the last few years, I was familiar with 68 Jay from going-away get-togethers and launch parties. During the week, it's pretty reasonable - nerds and artsy folks catching a couple drinks after work. But I shudder to think of the weekenders. Generally speaking, Dumbo is a pretty depressing place to be on the weekend. Coming from East Austin, Wicker Park (not Bucktown, mind you), and Williamsburg, I can't think of a single reason anyone would hang out in Dumbo on the weekends unless they were lo-jacked. Or, perhaps, if they lived here and were too lazy to pedal their trendy fixed gear up to WB or down to Red Hook. (I stand accused.) Did you ever go to a party at someone's house who you didn't really like but you hung out with anyway just to get out of your house and because they had free beer? Well, 68 Jay is kind of like that, only you pay for the beer. But the douchebag factor was so incredibly high there the last time I stopped by that it may have been the last time. The staff is friendly and attentive. I don't know what my fellow reviewer "TRON" was talking about below; there is no food and certainly no burger. Most of the chairs are kind of uncomfortable, but they open the front windows when it's nice outside. Lots of dogs come by. No, I mean actual dogs. That's a nice thing. I don't know. I was in the Dumbo area waiting to go to class in NYU. I had a hour to wait and no book to read. I stopped in the this. At because I always saw it but never went it. One of the best thing I've done. While I was waiting and drinking my Stella, the bar tender came by and started to talk with me. We had a great conversation and time was flying. The service that was giving was great. My beer was cold and my conversation was great. The only thing that I didn't like was that there was a few time that people were ordering things with cherry juice (tequila sunrise) but they didn't have it on the side. They used the same juice that they put there hands in to get the cherries. I would say they need to fix that. There wasn't anything else that I saw that was out of place. Crazy unbelievably cheap beer drinking during Hora Feliza. One of the best ways to start a night when you are coming home from Manhattan and moving on to Carroll Gardens and/or Fort Greene/Clinton Hill. Extra-friendly owner. THE WORST BAR EVER! I don't write reviews but I want to warn anybody/everybody. Not because of the drinks or environment. BUT JEN, she's the bartender there. She was extremely rude to just us. We ordered drinks and we wanted to buy another round, she yelled back at us saying "do you not see me doing something." All we did was try to get her attention (waited over 15 minutes already), when she finally came, she was yelling at us saying "what do you need, you didn't drink your first round." First of all, we are spending money, we shouldn't be treated like this. Secondly, when she finally gave us the shot, she continued to give us attitude so we decided to just leave. Lastly, if you don't want to work here or you are upset, don't take it out on your customers, it's not our fault that you're not happy. read more

What can I say about my local watering hole?... If you've never been and end up there, don't forget to smile and say hello, and you will receive a smile and kindness in return. Easy. There are a lot of regulars. It's like a small town in Dumbo. I know that some people feel unwelcome when they see the regulars at the bar, but understand that the regulars have seen a lot of obnoxiousness and other trouble and they are protective of the bartender, who is often the only staff member present. The bar has been there long before there were condos down the block. Seriously, just say "hello" and any unwelcome sentiments, such as those mentioned in other reviews, will go away. The wine selection is very good for a small place, and there's always something cold on tap. read more

Stopped in for a beer on a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty dead, but just the way we like it. There was a light breeze blowing and a table very close to a wide open window that was free and had our names written all over it ;-) We both had a draft beer, I believe it was called Circus boy, and boy do I like my wheat beers! It's a bar. It's got seats. It's got tables. It's got booze. It also has these made to order pizzas that people were doing back-flips over. Literally, back flips everywhere. If you're in the side opposite of the bar, the room with the pizza oven, the chef does all kinds of crazy things with the shovel and the pizzas. It's pretty entertaining. It was one of the first, full-on, summer days and the large windows were open, allowing lots of sunlight in and views out on to the streets of Dumbo. Reasonably priced drinks.
