Visiting from CA, first time in Houston. Was staying at Hyatt Regency and found this place with high ratings and not to far of a walk. When I got there I was confused and front desk told me to take the escalators down....big kudos to Houston having this underground tunnel. It's super clean and runs around 6 miles with plenty to eat and drink. Sorry let's get to the empanadas! Amazing AF! I got the Malbec beef, bbq chicken and bacon cheddar egg. These are by far one of the best empanadas I've had. I tried Malbec beef, Mac and cheese, spinach, mushroom, chorizo potato, date bacon goat cheese, corn and the banana Nutella. I decide to call the number in the email to ask about my order. No answers. I keep trying with no luck. I look at their physical to go menu and try that number. Finally someone picks up and I ask about my order. He looks it up and said he'll work on it. No explanation, no apology. I get another call back and was told they're out of a flavor I ordered. After waiting some more...I FINALLY get my order at 11:52am. Still no apology or explanation or offer to compensate for this whole mess. The empanadas are okay. Good stuff, didn't know it was located inside of a building where I had to pay for parking buttttt, I would come back though, just be smarter about where I park! My FAVORITE, was the Bacon, Dates and Goat Cheese filling, great balance when you dip it in the chimichurri! The Malbec's concept was really good, soft delicious stewed beef and carrots but seemed dry in texture once it was mingling in my mouth. My husband, friend, and I were driving back from the gym and saw this place on the way! It's in the midst of multiple restaurant but empanada places around houston aren't common, specifically in inner city area, so we really wanted to try! They surprisingly had my favorite type of empanada that I've had in Chile, the creamy corn type and it was very good! The empanada is flaky on outside and soft inside. The other type I had, the spinach and cheese was pretty good but honestly simple in flavor. My husband got the two beef types (beef and Malbec) both he enjoyed a lot. My friend got a beef one, bbq chicken, and Mac and cheese. The beef one of those three were the best. The Mac and cheese isn't as cheesy as you would think (the cashier said this as well), and the bbq chicken wasn't that good. So in general some empanadas are a hit or miss, but reason to find the ones you enjoy! Something cool about them are the initials of what type of empanada it is, is literally on the empanada itself!! These are perfect right before a meeting. However if you missed breakfast or hungry go ahead and upgrade to combo meal. If you see a line, it does not take long to move ahead. Often, Yelp reviews are more about either excessively praising or overly attacking a business based on unknown preferences or emotions. This isn't a cathartic review to express how I was "made to feel" at 5411 Empanadas Houston (5411 EH). It's about my experience from the perspective of a small business owner and a somewhat traveled foodie. First the food-- I've had empanadas and Argentinean food, but never an Argentinean empanada. I anticipated a spicy, savory snack. Empanadas can be a slam dunk for some cooks, but a change in oven time or temperature can make an average empanada great and a great one terrible. I ordered a Malbec beef empanada and a bacon, dates and a goat cheese empanada, along with one serving each of the chimichurri and red hot sauces. My first impression upon seeing the empanadas was they were more burned than browned, but no big whoop. "Done" is subjective; I'll eat a steak off the temperature I requested, not complain, and still over tip if the service is good (I'll get to service second). The Malbec beef one was, well...uninspired. I'm a long-time home chef, so I understand the meat preparation method. But, in my opinion, the beef was a bit too acidic and bland to have been sufficiently seasoned and slow-cooked. The bacon, dates, and goat cheese one was interesting. Goat cheese has a variety of tastes, but I honestly couldn't pick up any goat cheese note. It also had a slightly acrid aftertaste that just hung in the back of my throat for an hour after eating it. The sauces? I don't know--they weren't put in the bag (I was miles away from the restaurant when I found out and didn't see the need to return just to get them). Now, the service-- I entered the restaurant wearing a pink t-shirt which read, "be kind". Besides my protective mask, that, along with being a 5'5", 50-something, slightly-built guy would probably have many to see me as pretty unassuming and potentially easy to deal with. Also, there were customers either in or approaching the restaurant, and foot traffic in the surrounding area was all but nonexistent. The counterperson came from the kitchen area, and after exchanging greetings (which I gave first), and being asked what I would like, I asked the person's name to address them as who they said they were versus who I thought they were. The counterperson responded by motioning to the menu board and saying, "let's just say my name is 'the menu'". I get it. This wasn't a meet and greet. But really? Where did that come from? I moved forward, explaining that my companion was from another country, and although I knew what an empanada was he had never tried one. Perhaps I was being too chatty, but even with their COVID protection mask on I could tell that the counterperson couldn't care less. I went on to ask for menu recommendations, which were given in detail. After I asked another question, the chef leaned into the service window, rested a forearm on the ledge counter, and gave me a blank "are you gonna get something or what" stare that he kept until I placed my order. After fixing my food, the chef came from the kitchen, handed my order to and stood silently alongside the counterperson, resuming the stare. The coup de grâce? After I thanked them and as I walked away, I heard the counterperson say in a low tone while following the chef to the kitchen area, "okay, they're gone". Wow. I'm no Gordon Ramsey, 5411 EH is not a Michelin rated restaurant, and a basic description of the empanada would be it's a stuffed pastry street food. But a good empanada dished up with a smile can make a person miss home or dream of having a better one. I didn't taste the love nor feel the pride at 5411 EH. But I will go back. Why? Because my experience may have been a one-off. No restaurant or staff are always at the top of their game, and unless the place is beyond unbearable or dangerous, I always give a "bad" restaurant the thing that I would want someone to give my business--a reasonable benefit of the doubt and if able, another go. But next time, I'll go back with others. We'll order one of everything on the menu. We'll compare our experiences. If the consensus is favorable, I'll tell the organizers of a Houston-based conference scheduled to be held this coming December (of which I'm part of the vendor scouting committee) about 5411 EH. If the consensus isn't favorable, I'll just do as I did the first visit--say thank you and leave. Except, this time I'll say, "okay, we're gone"...and stay that way. read more

This place is in the basement of an office building and not visible from the street so beware! Ordered my empanadas ahead of time. They were ready when I got there. The girl working the register was rude/snotty. But that was ok cause the empanadas were good! First off they have a brilliant way of marking all of the empanadas so you know which us which - so important!! Favorite was the bacon, egg and cheese. SOOO flavorful! The chorizo and egg was also excellent. My daughter tried the mushroom and goat cheese which she said was delicious. My only complaint, other than rude girl, was the banana nutella one. First off, to find this place you'll need to park in the garage and go to the M level inside. It's a food court type floor where each place has like a mini restaurant. It's actually kind cool and they were so cute. I liked the interior of this place. It's small, like the others, and simplistic. The empanadas were pretty tasty but I was a little unimpressed with our experience. When we walked in no one was in there and a girl working there came out and looked surprised to see us. I greeted her and said "hi how are you?" And she just started blankly at me. Super awkward. So we just ordered and sat down. She brought our food and then grabbed her bag and left so apparently she just wanted to leave and have us just order quick. Again, our food was pretty good. I liked the fillings and my boyfriend who had meat filled ones loved his. I like that they have meal deals and lots of different options. I also like how each empanada is put in a bag with a printed nice label of what it is. Overall it's just kind of a hassle to get to if you're driving just to get food here. Good place to grab empanadas to go. I entered the building off of Walker and Louisiana Street and took the escalator downstairs, took a left and it was on my right hand side. These empanadas were baked and full of flavor! We tried the malbec beef, chorizo and patatas, ratatouille, and banana and nutella and got a side of the red sauce. The chorizo + patatas was o-k... but the other 3 were great!! The ratatouille was our favorite: veggies were fresh, not too tomato-y or salty! The malbec beef had good flavor as well. They only have one dessert option: banana and nutella. It was very tasty. I wish they would make a cinnamon apple dessert one! I think that would be great! Just don't add dulce de leche... otherwise it'll be too sweet. I liked how they put them in individual little labeled bags to differentiate the different empanadas. I wish mushroom and thyme wasn't made with blue cheese. Perhaps a chicken and mushroom combo +/- fontina cheese may be a good option? We'll be back to try the spinach and cheese. read more

Good little spot for a quick lunch. They have many varieties of empanadas so it's not just a tex-mex thing like many may assume. I tried their purple potato, ricotta and honey empanada and if someone likes sweet potatoes then this would be for them. I also got the mushroom and blue cheese which was delicious. These are some of the best empanadas I've ever had; however, they are also the smallest ones ever which is a bummer. I think I could eat 10+ of these and still not be full. My favorites are the bacon dates and goat cheese and the mushroom thyme and blue cheese. I wasn't a fan of any of the breakfast empanadas. They are priced well individually, however I really recommend you go for a combo if you're here for lunch. They have 2 lunch combos, the difference being Quick Lunch 1 has one less empanada than Quick Lunch 2. Both combos offer a drink OR chips of your choice as well as 2 sauces, either Chimichurri or Red Hot. I chose Quick Lunch 1 and had the Malbec Beef, Spinach & Cheese, & Caramelized Onion & Parmesan empanadas and both sauce choices! It's this tiny, sleek, classy-modern styled shop in the tunnels just past the McDonalds. It looks great, and it was packed when I stopped by. So far so good. I eventually settled for one of their lunch specials and got to pick 3 empanadas - a malbec beef, spinach and cheese, and bacon, dates, and goat cheese. First off, the food here was pretty delicious. Especially paired with the dipping sauces. The chimichurri in particular was quite good - I really liked it with the malbec beef! Unfortunately, the portions are quite tiny, and expensive for such small portions. I really should have listened to my stomach and ordered the entire menu, if I wanted to get full. My recommendation? Also the people were friendly, and the atmosphere of the place is great and clean. It's a tiny place, but there is seating nearby (in the tunnels). The spinach and cheese empanadas was really good.
