Super Cubana

Whenever I'm down in Houston, I make sure to visit Las Tortas Perronas for their super cubana -- torta packed high with meat and cheese, it's the perfect sandwich for the carnivore inside. Granted, prices have gone up and portion has gone down a bit (like most places since covid inflation), but the sandwich is still generously portioned (before it was monster size!)! Food is fresh and made to order and the bread is nice and crusty! What's more to say??

The Huerfanita!

A good sandwich is like a sweet kiss. Pleasant to your mouth and satisfies an urge. But imagine this, you go to kiss your girl and she moves to kiss you first, with a new eagerness, and after a lingering minute you realize that something more than a kiss is happening. Something you'll remember. Something you know you'll yearn for. That's something like the difference between a sandwich and a good torta. After your first experience you realize that this is more than just lunch, it's an epiphany. Like angels made the bread and choirs sang while they grilled the onions. It's like the difference between Milli Vanilli and Bach, one is OK, but there is a complexity and passion with the other. It stays in your mind and haunts your heart. I would say the Huerfanita from Tortas Perronas is a sandwich taken to another level, but that wouldn't be an accurate description. When you combine bistek, chuleta ahumada, and quesillo with avocado, refried beans, onions, tomato, and mayonnaise, you're not making a sandwich, you're making love.

Tortas were awesome. wish they had a lettuce option, but I see why not. Wouldn't go well with the ingredients each torta has. Definitely recommend.

Good, friendly people. They only do tortas and they do them well. I will definitely be back to try out the other tortas on the menu. I like the option to build your own as well. Next time I will definitely try one of the aguas.

Came here today. Safe to say this place is great! The bread was so darn good. I could've ate only the bread, and I still would've been satisfied. Healthy meat portions on the torta and had avocado, tomatoes, and onions. Overall delicious! They also had agua frescas too. They were made on the spot with fresh fruit. Was a little frothy but that's how you know it's been made just now. I would definitely return to this place again!

Smallest piece of avocado and tomato.

Sad looking torta Definitely never going back. I was expecting better based on their 5 stars.

The first time I sat at the bar for service, Allie was our server and she was beyond amazing. Helpful, explained the menu and specials, and made us feel really comfortable. The second time I came two weeks ago, we just ordered at the front and dined in regular. I ordered a pacific blue tuna melt. The girl with no hair who works in the kitchen has made my sandwich the last few times I've been to this locations I would rate them 0/10. I would honestly never come back to this location if I wasn't a forgiving person. Honestly I wouldn't be back to this location if Allie wouldn't have saved the day. My sandwich came out with little to no tuna on it. It was actually quite surprising for Chewbacca Hut. But the lady who made my sandwich gave me a little smirk before handing me my sandwich, and I knew something was wrong. If I could rate this location on food, and kitchen employees it would be o1 star. But thankfully you have employees like Allie. She saw me taking pictures of my sandwich and in literal disbelief of how little there was on the sandwich she immediately came to ask me if everything was right, she fully agreed the sandwich didn't look right and immediately brought me an extra portion of tuna to add. Without her, I would've completely roasted this entire establishment specifically the kitchen.

We walked in and placed our order, staff were really nice and accommodating with navigating the menu. The sandwiches were so bomb especially on the garlic bread, I think our only compliant was for the price there could have been more meat on the sandwiches. We both said we would be back!

I was excited to have more food options within walking distance. Their food is on the pricier side for sandwiches, but their sourdough is really good. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Everything tastes fresh. My friends and I would walk over and grab soup and sandwiches with chips. Sometimes I'd dine in and sometimes I'd take it to go. My favorite is their Italian sandwich which comes with a pickle. I'd add a bag of Miss Vickie's jalapeño chips or potato soup. I'm a creature of habit when I find something I like, so I haven't tried other sandwiches though I do like turkey. Maybe next time. Panera still makes a better broccoli and cheese soup. The small chicken Caesar salad is loaded for a small bowl. I appreciate the large chicken pieces and toasted sourdough as croutons. It takes a while till you get your food, but you can order online in advance. People come and go during their work lunch. Service is friendly, and I haven't had any bad experiences. I will definitely be back.

The atmosphere and decor was wonderfully cozy and gave a super relaxed vintage East Coast vibe. The team was super the moment we walked in; the host made us feel welcome and the server, Santana, was first-class and her personality and temperament was delightful. I could tell she cares about the guests and we felt like family and knew she respected our time and that we were spending our hard-earned money at Katz's. The food was good, but Santana was superb. The food came out surprisingly fast considering how much we ordered. Service was mostly great, except for our waitress accidentally spilled a water on the table without apologizing and she forgot one of our appetizers... Our table ordered a mix of breakfast and dinner items. I got the country fried chicken and really enjoyed it. Added a little extra pepper and hot sauce, it was a 10/10 for me. I also tried the Kountry Klub Skinny Sandwich. It wasn't bad, but it looked better than it tasted. In my opinion, there was just too much bread compared to the fillings. I'd give it a 6.5/10. The Oreo Cheesecake Shake was 100/10! I'm not sure if they used the seasonal churro cheesecake because it had a hint of cinnamon, but it was absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the 7-Layer Chocolate Cake. He enjoyed it, but felt like the icing was a bit thick and overpowering. I wasn't the biggest fan myself, since it had a very rich dark chocolate flavor. I'd rate it a 7/10. Overall had a great time and everyone enjoyed their meals!

They have a select variety of pastries. We got their butter croissant, blueberry cream cheese danish, and spinach pastry. The croissant was one of the best I had in Houston! It is subtle, buttery, and flaky and does not go stale from staying out all day. I think these Houston croissants are the most similar to the ones I had in France! The blueberry cream cheese danish had a healthy and generous amount of blueberries. It was flaky, and the cream cheese flavor was not overwhelming or artificial. The spinach pastry was also flaky like the others and had a good spinach and cream flavor. I also had a bite of my friend's cinnamon kouign-amann, but it was not as good as the others and was a bit on the drier side. All the pastries I got were well balanced with subtle flavors and had golden, crispy flakes. I really enjoyed them, and although I have been here a handful of times, it's definitely a Houston croissant staple, which I will be visiting more often!
