I was greeted at the door by a customer's very friendly golden lab, best greeting of the day btw. The coffee was as requested without issue. There is only one size (12oz) so I grabbed two since I'm a traveling man today. I like my coffee so needed that spare. Cinnamon rolls can be found but overall this is a coffee shop. Not like grandma's hash slinging eggs over easy, coffee, reading, chatting, and just enjoying the day in general. If I had more time, I would have written some on my dissertation this morning. I don't drink black coffee, but enjoy lattes with regular milk, so this experiment would be "tainted" by milk. I asked for their traditional latte, expecting piñon coffee and steamed milk only. The barista asked if I wanted it hot or iced. Hot seemed the traditional way to go. Unfortunately, when I got home and tried the latte, it was super sweet. The barista didn't ask if I wanted it sweetened. Most places either make lattes sans sweetener or ask first. Bummer. Even so, the barista was a total sweetheart. I also ordered their Piñon Bear Claw, and he recommended not heating it. When he realized his co-barista had heated it, he insisted on swapping it for a cold one, then handed it over. It tasted great, especially with the piñons on top. This NM Piñon Coffee location is cozy and quiet. If you're looking for a subdued place for a break from work, check this place out. The bear claw made the stop worth it, but the latte was too sweet to let the piñon flavor show. Next time, I'll make sure the latte isn't sweetened!

Their cold brew is flavorful, though I'd love to see them use a lighter roast to cut some of the smokier notes--but that's more personal preference than criticism. The cold brew was very weak, and when I asked about it, the owner explained that it was made fresh daily from a medium roast. A common misconception is that the roast of coffee affects the strength. People often assume dark roast equals stronger coffee. However, that mainly affects the flavor notes and character of the coffee. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, the owner didn't offer to make me something else or perhaps add a shot of espresso, which was a bit disappointing. The white chocolate lavender scone was delicious. The texture was light and fluffy on the inside, crisp and crumbly on the outside, with just the right amount of sweetness. The lavender was not overpowering, just subtle enough to add a hint of flavor. All in all, I don't know that I would go out of my way to find this place again, but if they happened to pop up somewhere nearby, I'd definitely grab a scone and maybe try their iced Americano.

But my favorite roasted coffee beans actually come from this cute little roasterie in Albuquerque! I've been buying from Moon's for years, and during a trip for the Balloon Fiesta in 2019, my son and I had the pleasure of meeting Joy and Jori in person. They were so kind and welcoming, and it made us appreciate their work even more. In my opinion, their roasting is spot-on--rich, flavorful, and always balanced. Every blend I've tried has been incredible. Having a burr grinder to grind these is key! My son's more of a tea guy, and he was excited to pick up some of their loose leaf selections too. If you ever get the chance, go visit Moon's and meet these wonderful folks. The coffee somehow tastes even better when you know who's behind it.
