It's a nice-looking restaurant, but the food is unimpressive. For the price (mid-twenties for an entree) I was expecting better. My grouper was presented very nicely, but it was overcooked and not complemented well by the other food on the plate. There were also issues with over-seasoning... do you really need that much garlic? Additionally, they actually mean it when they say they only serve fish. There are ~3 non-fish entrees (prime rib, filet, and pork tenderloin). This isn't necessarily a criticism but I'd be worried to bring a large party here in case someone isn't a fish fan. There is also no beer on tap, which is pretty ridiculous in 2014. read more

I really wanted to like this place more than I did. It's very nice looking and in a great part of town. Both hostess and waitress were delightful and provided very good service. The reasonably well stocked bar made a nice martini, though I'm a bit baffled by the lack of any beers on tap. I ordered a wedge salad, which is tough to screw up. Unfortunately, the dressing was not very good, kind of tasted like a watered down ranch. The salad overall was not well balanced, too much lettuce / not enough of anything else. For an entree I ordered the surf and turf and it was pretty bad. The steak was prepared to a nice medium rare, but was unpleasantly chewy and flavorless. The scallops were overly breaded (not sure why you'd bread scallops at all). Soft shell crab was tiny and had a strange "fishy" taste. The miniature key lime pie I had for dessert was excellent and definitely the highlight of the meal. I'm really struggling with how to rate this place, am giving it three star based primarily on the fact that both of my travel companions were delighted with their meals (blackened tuna and crab cakes). Perhaps I ordered poorly. I may get give it another shot. read more

We sat at the bar on a Saturday evening. The bartender was cute and young, but not much personality (her boyfriend was there - maybe she was off her game paying attention to him). This is the type of establishment that would have a thriving bar crowd with a true professional behind the bar. Someone who can craft a drink, make conversation, upsell and recommend the menu etc. After having an underwhelming appetizer - fried calamari - and no reason to stay, we left for another restaurant. read more

I came here again for Restaurant Week with two friends. We ordered the following. appetizers: sesame seared tuna sashami - Uh, it's tuna sashami. she crab soup - We received melted butter. I couldn't handle more than a few sips. soup of the day - I don't remember what it was, but it was good. entrees: crab cake - They forgot the remoulade! Otherwise it was good. The garlic mashed potatoes were standard. grouper fillet - This was the weakest entree. The combination of the fillet, sauce, and fried plantains did not work at all. I believe it was also served with raw vegetables on the side. Who wants groceries on the side? bacon wrapped tenderloin - Surprisingly, I enjoyed this the most. It was a large serving, tasty, with great sides: smoky collards and lentils. desserts: creme brulee - Par. chocolate sin torte - Bogey. This tasted like black coffee. Gross. guava cheesecake - Birdie. This was interesting. Cheesecake with a hint of guava. overall: 2 tasty or interesting 4 standard 3 failures I guess that makes it A-OK? read more

Highly recommended by one of the Marriott hotel staff members. I was with my cousin and nephew and walked about 15 min from our hotel. All of our food (from fish to chicken and pasta) turned out delicious and looked perfect on the places. Servers were very attentive and also provided great menu item suggestions. Ambience with the rainfall walls added a fancy nice touch. Bathroom was very clean and even had mouthwash to use! read more

Well, if this is the best seafood Norfolk has to offer, I would be very disappointed. The atmosphere was nice- the bar area inviting with dark wood and bar tables. Parking is free adjacent to the business. We made reservations on Open table on a Thursday evening- very wide open seating. The menu options were good , including the specials. The best was the she crab soup -outstanding ! The food was average- my entree of blackened mahi mahi was so so served on risotto and spinach - nothing great. Prices were average. Did not have dessert. The calamari appetizer was not crispy -soft and a bit greasy. read more

This is Norfolk 's best kept secret as it's the real deal - attentive service and tasty food. The grouper was fresh and well made. The bread pudding was one of the best I have ever had and the calamari surprisingly good. Why surprising? Because I didn't expect it - a blend of the aioli and marina sauces were the perfect dip for the well seasoned calamari. Can't wait to come back and if you do? The grouper on a bed of spinach with "dodo" or fried plantains is the best main you can get! read more

I haven't tried to many restaurants in downtown Norfolk and I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I had the Macadamia Crusted Mahi with the Coconut Risoto which were both absolutely fantastic and the Chocolate Sin Torte with the Shiraz was heavenly. I will definately try this place again. read more

Tues night made reservations. Walked on over and sat down in what appears to be a very nice place. After 5 minutes our waiter showed up and we proceeded to order some drinks. My guest ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio which is standard in any restaurant except apparently here, where we were notified they were out of their house selection. No offer for another choice, it was basically that's it. So moving on we proceed to order apps and the crab spring rolls were highly recommended so we figured let's try them. Again we were told they were out of something so rather then keep playing whack a mole trying to find something to eat we decided to call it quits and proceeded to walk out. My suggestion is call ahead to make sure they have what they advertise on their menu before proceeding. read more

This was our place for Valentines Day dinner. We didn't have reservations but they had plenty of room at the bar so we were excited to get in. They had their special drinks for Valentines Day and they were really good. The food let's start off with wasn't bad by no means. It was lacking a little on seasoning and to me that's a little bit of a pet peeve. If I am paying $40 for a entree I want it seasoned well. Other than that we had no complaints. Dessert was good, chocolate torte. Again everything was good but other than the drinks nothing blew me away. read more

Good was ok. Nothing to write home about. The worst part was they messed up the check. They tried to add a tip to a table they already added had it added for the large party. Then it's stumped them how to split it four ways. Been sitting her for half and hour waiting for them to finish it. I usually don't write reviews unless something was seriously messed up and this is! Finally he came back with our checks. No 10% off or anything like that. Just an apology and then asked us to fill out review cards. Seriously we were stuck for 45 minutes and then you want us to fill out review cards? HA! read more

Expensive but overall a nice fish dinner in a nice setting. The Grouper Filet, with spinach and Cuban style fried plantains, would make this former Floridian to go back for more! Pairs well with my white wine. read more

Haven't been here for over 3 years, use to be one of my favorite place to eat. Dined there today and the food is terrible. I had the fried pork belly with clams, potatoes and sweet corn: the only thing that had any flavor was the corn. Food is bland and tasteless! My wife had the salmon and Seafood risotto and asparagus, had it not been for the salt and lemon she abundantly added it would have been inedible. Waitress was also less than desirable with a bland personality without a care in the world about the customers. Definitely would stay away until new management and cook comes along! Not sure how to reply on my phone on here. To the person below from 456 fish, replacement of the unappetizing entre without charge is the norm for most restaurant when a customer does not eat nor enjoy their meals. Your reply proves my point that you are under delivering and over charging to your customers. I see that customer concern is not really a top priority. I suggest you put your emotioms asside and focus on service in food preparation. Moreover if this is the response from a manger which I'm hoping it is NOT, correcting a customer and not the issues that you have will only result in more complaints. Positive reviews on social media should not be your main concern take a look around your surroundings sir or ma'am and ask yourself why was this customer not happy with the product we delivered. If you took as much time as you did into this response and put it into service ans food production maybe I wouldn't be here going back and forth with you. read more

Awesome seafood, consistently good. Great deal to park there, dinner then walk to Chrysler for a show. I love their crab cakes, tuna and grouper. She crab soup is among the best in the area. Love the salad with fried goat cheese. Good place for groups, they also have a private room. Not a place for kids. Staff is very good. Great place to bring out of town guests. read more

This is absolutely a solid lunch option in Norfolk (and probably a great dinner option.) Cool atmosphere at lunch - good for a meeting or group. The spring rolls and fish tacos were great, but the crab cake easily was the best thing I had at 456 Fish. I get a crab cake every time I'm in Baltimore, but it's never been this good. In fact, I can easily say I've never had a crab cake this good anywhere (Note: I don't consider myself a crab cake connoisseur & not even a fan.) Have to tip my hat to 456 Fish....recommended. read more

Very good food - all of the specials and regular menu items have been prepared well and had great flavor. I would highly recommend. I didn't love the calamari, so I'd advise against that. Bottled beer selection is a bit bland and no tap beer but decent wines and good bar. Presentation of the meal was very good - service was not quite top-notch but acceptable and friendly enough. A definite good bet - you won't go wrong. read more

I don't really like seafood, but I'll go to a seafood place every now and then if my wife wants fish. I had the Mahi at 456 and it was very tasty. The way it was cooked gave it a great seared texture. The tropical risotto on the side complemented the flavor of the fish. Additionally, our waitress was very upbeat, friendly, and helpful. If I liked seafood I would probably give five stars. It is a bit pricy, but no more so than other upscale seafood places. read more

Overall everything is quite tasty. The goat cheese salad was devine and not overly dressed (though a little pricey for a side salad). The grouper was cooked properly but the balsamic drizzle didn't fit with the rest of the dish (too sweet). The chambord cheesecake was a solid choice, nothing overly exciting but it had a great texture and the flavors were on point. read more

This is not the same restaurant I fondly remember . I had a reservation for 6 pm and got there at 5:50 pm. No one waited on me and after 15 minutes I had to go in and get someone. There are no wines by the glass except unnamed house wines and the bartender had no idea what they were. I finally gave up and ordered a margarita and said I was ready to order. 45 minutes later I had no drink and had not placed an order Instead I got to watch a drunk, passed out gentleman laying in front of the restaurant ( Norfolk police were very kind and respectful) After 50 hot minutes I went inside and all the hostess could say was do you want a free dessert? Believe me I understand with COVID short staff but this was so much more And how does a fine dining restaurant with $25-$35 entrees not have high end wine by the glass I left and will not be back. Gladly came to an old favorite Luce and the staff is attentive and they are an entire book of fine wines by the glass and bottle. read more

Came in for a birthday dinner and this place was amazing. When we got in the hostess directed us to the private dining area we reserved and another waiter came and carried a cake for us. While we were decorating the space our waiter came in and asked if there was anything he could get us to drink. We requested kir royals and in minutes he returned with our orders. They were pretty good, and they added a cherry to them. Once the rest of the party arrived our waiter came and asked if we wanted anything besides water. After giving the group a few more minutes he returned and took our orders all in one go. My starter was the she crab soup which I was pretty excited for. A few minutes later servers came out and placed our first course down. The soup was hot and tasted amazing, there was lump seafood inside the bowl. The second course for me was the seared tuna. I will say it said seared but it was pretty much like sashimi. For my main course I had the crab cakes and those were so good, a lot of meat and definitely payed in potato chips as stated. I was able to taste my friend's risotto which tasted great also. My last meal was the tiramisu which was good, not super sweet and had the coffee taste. Our waiter was amazing and the food wonderful, I couldn't have had a better experience. Will be eating there again. read more

456 Fish is a great name first of all. My girlfriends and I came here for Sunday brunch on a weekend away in Norfolk. It is a formal restaurant, hats are not allowed. We were sat at a high top next to the bar and uniquely next to a fountain, which separates sides of the restaurants. They do have some lower tables on the other side. Service was friendly, mimosas were plenty, coffee was refilled all the time. For entree I ordered the Veggie Benedict which cost me about 12 dollars. My friend who is vegan was able to find sides of fruit, fried plantains, and potatoes to eat. The menu offers a variety of delicious dishes including Coconut and Vanilla French Toast, Eggs Benedict, and Chicken and Waffles. My brunch was absolutely delicious and tremendously satisfying. I cleaned my plate faster than anyone! The veggies were seasoned so well, I did not even miss the meat. Definitely recommend this place for brunch in the Norfolk area. read more

Yelp reviews tend to be a bit inflated, but if one goes by the rubric, this restaurant was "a-ok." As I walked in, the hostess was very friendly in greeting me and letting me look at their menu, but then after I decide to go in and she's leading me to the table, she tells me about their "no hat" policy. Uh...do you also have a no jacket policy that you want to tell me about before I actually get to my table and put down my bag and have time to take things off? Forgetting the fact that it's a bit of a silly policy, maybe at least let your guest get to the table to see if he's planning to take off his hat, as most normal people do at a decent restaurant once they get more than two steps in the door. (Btw, I don't wear a baseball cap, but more of an upscale cap in the "newsies" style.) The restaurant itself is pleasant, with a wall of running water dividing the bar area from the dining area, and my waiter was quite friendly and got me moving efficiently. I opted for a glass of wine with their ahi tuna sashimi (slightly seared) and then their signature crab cakes. The tuna was solid, but not spectacular. The portion size was decent, though tuna needs to be cut carefully to avoid sinew, and I had to work my way around some stuff (and spit out one piece). One warm roll later, it was on to the crab cakes. The crab cakes themselves were excellent. There was little filler, and the slightly spicy remoulade dipping sauce was a great complement (the potato chip crust was interesting from a texture standpoint, though I could have lived without it). It came with a large piece of broccoli, which was fairly plain but well-seasoned (though a bit of work to cut with my knife), and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were a disappointment in that they weren't warm enough (parts were kind of cool), and while service had been very attentive, my waiter kind of disappeared during the main course and didn't ask me how things were until I was nearly done; I never got to tell him how things were--or that the potatoes were kind of coolish--until it was too late. Somehow, two courses and a glass of wine got up to $60. Was it worth it? Honestly, not quite. read more

There was a roach crawling around the party room and when I told the waiter he turned around looked at it and laughed. I didn't get the joke but the food was disgusting to add on to it. Also our food had hair in it. -5 stars! Lisa the manager also didn't seem to care about our concerns. Horrible experience for mediocre service. read more

This place was great. Delicious seafood including fresh catch of the day, perfectly cooked and some interesting accompaniments that set it apart (mmm coconut risotto and plantain). It's moderately priced. Good for a date night. Service was great too. My reasons for deducting a star are because the free bread we had before starting was one of those cheap white part bake mini baguette things which instantly made us a bit worried about the rest of the food (needlessly as it was amazing) and their wine selection was very over priced, plus the AC was turned up way too high. Other than that, it was fantastic. read more

This was a great restaurant. We went for one menu item in particular, the Lobster Mac. It did not disappoint. The person who wanted it loved it. Other menu items ordered were the Chef's Pasta, Blackened Catfish, and Pork Chop. Everything was cooked to perfection. The service was also great. Very attentive and helpful. Lowered the sun shades as the sun shone in on our face. Then, raised them once the sun went behind the skyline. The restaurant as a whole is cozy. There's a gorgeous bar inside. Additionally, a rare feature, they have their own parking, although there aren't that many spots. read more

Very excellent crab cakes (crab in a potato chip crunchy batter, how can it get any better??), great interior design, waitstaff were very attentive and helpful with menu selections. Only dislike was the weird Caesar salad that consisted of two large lettuce leaves smothered in cheese with light dressing with a crouton shaped more or less like a tree branch - tasted great, but needlessly complicated to eat. Sometimes a Caesar salad just needs to be a Caesar salad. read more

I went to 456 Fish last Saturday for a friends Birthday. I'll start with the good things. I was able to find parking rather quickly, our waiter Zack was pleasant and explained everything well, the bathroom was clean and well stocked and the presentation of the food was nice. Next... I have no problem paying for what I really want if its worth it to me. That being said my bill was over $45.00 for little to no food and it wasn't the best. To start when we sat down Zack explained the full menu was not available at this time of day. We went at around 5pm which you would think that the full dinner menu was available. With the limited selection we choose appetizers. I had a crab cake appetizer that came with a dollop of potato salad which cost $16.00. The crab cake which was coated in potato chips and fried. Much to my surprise the potato chip crust was a good addition to a completely unseasoned bland tasting ball of crab and the potato salad was basically unsalted potatoes seasoned with mayonnaise. Next I ordered the fried shrimp appetizer. I got three (yes 3) medium/large butterflied shrimp. I tell you they must use the minimum amount of seasoning allowed because while they looked very good not even the coating had any flavor but the sauce they gave me with it was the best thing on the dish. Because we could not find any entrees off of the limited menu to our liking my bff and I decided to split any appetizers we ordered. She had the crabcake appetizer & crab egg rolls. She received two small egg rolls each cut in half. Because I only got 3 shrimp and her egg rolls were so small I gave her one shrimp and I took a half of one of the egg rolls. There was no crab flavor to the egg rolls which was probably because we really did not notice any crab in them. The other flavors within it were quite good but it just was not what we were expecting from a "CRAB" egg roll. Overall I would not say that my experience there was pleasant as far as food is concerned. I would give it a second try because it may have just been that one experience. I would try to go when the full menu was available especially considering that it seems that people love this restaurant as a whole. read more

In my opinion, the best crab cakes available anywhere. We've eaten here countless times, sometimes for a fancy night out, sometimes just for drinks and appetizers at the bar, but I don't think once have we NOT gotten the crab cakes. They are all lump meat and coated with potato chips, which does sound odd, but is amazing. They have a bit of horseradish inside for an awesome kick. We drove there to meet a friend. The place was easy to find. There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant, and they do valet parking. The restaurant is a bit larger than what I initially thought, the decor is a bit darker which gives a cozy feel. We had reservation, and our friends were there before us already seated. Both of us had grouper and our friends had sword fish and vegetarian lasagna. All of the food were very good. No complains. The most of all was our server - she was very professional, very knowledgeable and polite. Gave us enough space to talk but also checked periodically to see if we needed anything. Both of us had a drink and the total bill for two of us was $70. I may go there again. read more
