I was pretty upset when I discovered that the man who did my smog check charged me $10 more than the price advertised on Yelp (after initially asking for $80 until I said that I wanted the price I saw on Yelp) plus I had to pay cash or it would have been another $2. But the owner saw from my Yelp review how unhappy I was with the service and agreed to refund me the $10 and he did. I feel a little better about the station now and am upgrading from 1 star to 3 for taking the time to satisfy an unsatisfied customer. 2y ago I did a smog test here and it was a horrible experience. Now I saw that there is a new guy running the show and I checked it out. They do not take appointments so it's a bit hit and miss. This place is very busy. There were 3 cars in line and it took an 1h wait. I just put my car in line, gave him my car key and walked over to Solano a bit. This place does a very good job of testing for emission. And the two people running the operation were pleasant and efficient. Only problem is it can get busy so be prepared to wait up to 30 minutes on a busy day. They accept cash or personal check, no credit cards. With a coupon (I had a Value Pak coupon for $26.75 + $8.25 for the Certificate Fee, a total of $35) so it's the less expensive place I found. You can get other valued coupons on-line. I had received two other coupons in my mail and one place never answered their phone when I called to get the exact price (advertised as $30 on a Smog Test) and the second place was way more expensive. I looked this place up online and right on their website it states "we do all kinds of vehicles" and since I have a tall roof van, I even tried to call them but no one picked up the phone. Silly me, I drove all the way across town from West Oakland in rush hour traffic since I saw that statement right on the website and I really needed to get it done before a check engine light came on again (fuel flow issue perhaps due to using biodiesel) and I was already late with smog part of reg. When I get there there is no one in line (I can now see why...) and there is a guy inside with sunglasses on and his ear buds in listening to music on his phone (no wonder he didn't answer the phone...). So he takes a quick glance at the van and says they don't do larger vehicles like mine. So I tell him about the website and that they might want to take that statement off and he does not reply, just a generic have a nice day with a bit of a smirk. So I headed over Berkeley Smog just before it closed and the guy takes pity on me and informs me that with my vehicle you don't even need to bring it inside and there was no reason he could not have done the work. In fact he he shows me the process which is ridiculously easy. Just plugs the cord into the OBDII port and bam! Done in 10 minutes. He even gave me a $20 discount since I had been there before! I should have realized something was off with these guys when I read the BS statement "Bonus! We will electronically file your certificate with DMV after the test." which automatically takes place on the machine whether you want it to or not. Very disappointing. Very affordable. The guy is professional. Make sure you check-in with him when you arrive, so you can get on the list. After that, you don't need to worry about people trying to cut, because he'll come out and get the next car on his list. Also, check-in on Yelp and let him know you did so. We have been taking our cars to this little gas station in our neighborhood for smog checks and gas for years, but they lost our business today. We saw the price on their website indicating "$19.75 + certificate Guaranteed! NO EXTRA fees for 2000 and newer vehicles! Our offer applies to all vehicles 2000 and newer." However, when we arrived, they were going to charge $85 total for a station wagon and a small size SUV, both 2000 and newer. The person working at the station said that he did not know about the pricing on the website. The manager came over and said that there was an exception for SUVs, but offered a price of $66. I rechecked the website while they did the smog check and found no exception for SUVs on the website, but did find such an exception mentioned on Yelp. I told the manager that I was happy to pay the price she offered, but I wanted her to be aware that the website was misleading as it says $19.75+certificate for ALL VEHICLES. She became very argumentative, telling me "You think someone with a huge RV gets that price, or a huge truck! Most people know what they drive. You don't even know what you drive!" I am sure that the manager became defensive because she is aware of the website's false advertising and is probably tired of having the same argument every day. read more

I had a great experience. Not sure what the others were talking about. I brought in my 1990 Jeep Cherokee. He said it was $10 extra because of the extra test for old cars. Total was $50. My gas cap was bad (cracked) and so I bought one for $10 from him. He showed me the old cap and it was definitely cracked. The wait was ok. They were testing someone else, so I had to wait 10 minutes. Test took about 20 minutes. It was raining. If you are busy or impatient, I would not go here. I did not expect a free re-test. Nothing in writing said this, so I didn't expect it. The only possibly cheaper place I know is Quality in El Cerrito. Which is to say, I think this place is a great deal and please do give them your business. read more

I hate getting smog checks, sit in a cold exhaust filled room with only two year old car repair magazines to read or a long wait at a nicer place due to the multiple good Yelp reviews. 4 Less Smog Check is cool, as it is unknown so no waiting, 15 min. total time, one of the BEST PRICES AROUND $40 out the door (tell them you want a "web special") and its right across the street from the library (hardly had time to walk across the street and find a book, I looked out and the tech. was done and sweeping the leaves from the side walk.) The tech. was super nice, took the time to explain the emission read out even though the car had values well below the normal mean of other vehicles that passed. Like I said I hate getting smog checks, smog technicians are not allowed to touch or fiddle with anything on the car even as simple as jiggling a lose spark plug wire to try and help it pass. They'll tell you it didn't pass and to come back once you fix the problem for another test. But my car passed and when I got in, I did notice that my climate control was turned off along with the radio, so there was no electrical draw which would cause the car to idle faster and not pass.... I guess the smog tech. was very compentent to remember all the requirements.......I really like this place. read more

4 Less Smog Check is W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L!! I arrived at 8am on a Tuesday and was first in line to have my car smogged. My first car, I was a little nervous. No fuss, no muss. It took 15 minutes. Dan Roberts, the technician, was totally helpful and answered all my questions. $40 bucks including certificate can not be beat! The website does say he only takes CASH or CHECK so come prepared. My review goes on to what happened after I left, just to show you what a nice guy he is!! I accidentally left my water canteen in his shop. I thought about it for two days (what, you don't get all attached to your canteen, too :)?) After it ate me up for a few days I called him and after saying only my first name, he interrupted me with "I have it." He had recognized it and looked up my name and phone number to call me and let me know he still had it (only my line had been busy when he called.) I drove over to pick it up and there it was sitting on his desk waiting for me. Now that is a genuine act of kindness not seen in a lot of businesses today. Do you know someone you just met who would go to that length to make sure you got back something of such little consequence as a water canteen? I went to another Smog check place in El Cerrito and it was a total bait and switch ripoff - my car was bigger than a passenger car (it's a small SUV), they misprinted the ad, they would give me 50% off of a ridiculous list price, etc. - So luckily I brought one other coupon with me that said they had honest prices with no extra charges, which was 4Less in Berkeley. They are true to their ad, honest prices (lowest one out there as far as I know) and no extra charges. I had to wait 30 minutes, but the guy told me that would be the wait time up front when I got there. When he did the work, it took 10 minutes and all the information automatically gets sent to the DMV (by them). I think they deserve the kudos because they are straight shooters and take care of business in a timely fashion. read more

I bought this through Groupon. As it is an older vehicle I knew from the fine print that there would be an extra charge for that. Turns out though that if you don't pay that in cash there's another $10 charge. They charge you for using a cedit card only for coupons, mind you, not for full priced service. When I complained I was rudely told to "check the find print next time". Well, I got home and checked the fine print. Surprise it isn't in there. Now for the topper, they failed it because they said the header wasn't approved. Well, it is - CARB E.O. #: D-540-5, it's stamped right on the side, it's marketed specifically for California and the people I took it to after had no problem passing it. I was dreading getting my first smog check but 4 Less Smog Check Berkeley made it a painless experience. I saw the $40 "internet special" online (which seemed like a very good price), checked the Yelp reviews and then drove up to the Chevron gas station to get it done. We parked outside, and went in to check in with the smog check technician, who I'm guessing was probably the only guy who ever works there. He was already in the middle of another smog check, so he asked us to park outside on the street and said he'll come and get us. (He asked us to not block access to the water/tire check area next to the shed, which was fair enough.) About 10 mins later, he came out to get us. He offered to drive our car into the garage for us, since Chevron was a very busy and rather chaotic place in evening rush hour on a week day. That was great. He also didn't hesitate to (politely) ask couple people to reverse their cars so he had access to the garage, so we didn't need to wait longer than necessary. The smog check itself took 15 minutes or less. The cost was $40, including certificate. He obviously knew what he was doing and was friendly and polite the whole time. The results were automatically transferred electronically plus he gave us a print-out of our smog check results for our own records. We definitely plan to go back to him next time! P.S. Don't forget to bring CASH, because it seems like they don't take credit cards. read more

Excellent all around. My car had an unrelated issue that made the engine light go on during the test (automatic failure) and he retested it twice for no extra charge. There may be a wait, especially on Saturdays, but they have the NY Times. And it's the nicest neighborhood you'll find for a smog shop, even better when the library reopens. Make sure you check their internet specials for the best prices, and be sure to bring cash or a check, they're old fashioned that way.
