I've been coming here for over twenty years, and while the ownership may have changed somewhere along the way and some of my favorite menus are gone, the kitchen seems to have stayed true to what made this place special. It's a casual Italian spot in a college area, nothing fancy, just consistently good food. The mushroom ravioli (Ravioli al funghetto) is still my favorite dish and tastes just as good as I remember. In a restaurant business where so much changes over time, it's nice to find a place that still delivers the dishes you've been craving for decades. read more

We enjoyed our dinner at 3 Giovani. The restaurant is a quick, 2-minute walk from Washington Square Park. It was a lovely evening, so 3 Giovani opened its front doors and windows to let the breeze in. I had a ragu pasta, and it was just OK--a bit oversalted but otherwise fine. But I liked the red pepper dip that came out with the bread basket, very yummy (and complimentary!). read more

While I've enjoyed 3 Giovani for it's food several times my friends and I had a very negative experience this past Friday with the manager. Condescending, arrogant and hypocritical - he was very rude to my friends and I (even threatening to take our reservation away because we called him out for his behavior). It was not fresh or light, and it was incredibly fish. Basically in melted butter. The gem salad is advertised was charred with minimal dressing. It was not Crisp as typical Jim salads are and was overall lacking flavor. The pesto pasta was creamy and oily - not too typical standards of refreshing pesto. The Rustico pasta was HEAVY on the cream and not very flavorful. Service was attentive but lacking - server took order then disappeared after. Interacted with bussers for everything outside the initial order and check dropping. Lastly - $5 PER DIET COKE IN SMALL GLASSES AND CHARGED BY THE (tiny) GLASS. We came here because we couldn't get into the first place we chose and boy are we glad we ended up here! 4 of us had an amazing dinner. We had delicous appetizers, drinks, coffee and main dishes. The carbonara, fish and eggplant parmesean were all hits. The tiramisu and dark chocolate mousse cake were wonderful. The prices are incredible given the location, taste and the ambience. Complete failure of (other platform) reviews once again! This is a mediocre neighborhood Italian restaurant. There's nothing "cozy" about sitting in a wooden chair for ninety minutes. Though the interior is way nicer than another proclaimed "nice for a date" spot La Ripaille on the other side of the village (you get candles here, not an assortment of LED bulbs), the acoustics inside are awful and the outside seating area is in too much of a transitional area with everything from candy resellers to obnoxious drunks--not enough seating density to feel comfortable. The only highlight here is that the prices for pizza and *some* of the entrees are at pre-inflation levels. Some pizzas under $20, what is effectively veal schnitzel for $42, not bad at all. Overall the food wasn't particularly good. Taglierini "Pesto" sauce tasted not fresh and had a sludge-like consistency (2/5). Ravioli "Funghetto" was great (4/5). Paccheri "Vegetariana" was bizarre and incomplete compared to the menu description (1/5). We just had a few mushrooms in ours, none of the other listed ingredients. The paccheri were already kind of cold by the time we took our first bite. The white pizza with prosciutto wasn't really the style I was looking for and the dough/crust was lacking. The Vitello Capriciossa was okay! But the "fresh" mozzarella was spongy chunks that I had trouble identifying as cheese. Overall not worth it unless you're in a pinch or are like me, and you don't repeat restaurants. read more

I have been drinking Negronis for a long time. I make them with white sweet vermouth because they are Pink and Frosty With lots of ice and the orange peel because they are lighter. I ordered a Negroni and it was perfect and delicious. The resturant has a pleasant atmosphere and the waiters were friendly and professional. I ordered a pulpo appetizer with shrimp. It was excellent. Flavorful and delicate very good with the bread they served and some accompanying butter mix. Don't forget the cocktail. Next I had the Veal cutlet which is a favorite of mine. They called it a rack of veal I didn't know what that was and was gently explained to that it was a veal chop with the bone. It came out Hot! With arugula, tomato's and a very light dressing. My companion had the hot celery soup and then the special fish of the day which was cod with tomato's and mushrooms in a really good sauce. I am a civilian when it comes to restaurants but I know enough to Know when the folks who run a place know what they are doing. I was unaware that's it's been there a very long time. They certainly know what they are doing All these things added up to a very nice very enjoyable evening. And my Negroni which started off the night for me was perfect. read more

I wasn't planning to review, just check the name to recommend to a friend. But negative reviews seemed really unfair. It is reasonably priced and the service was great. But so was the food. A simple arugula salad featured terrific greens. Pasta sauce ditto with prosciutto (not ham or bacon). Faro as a side had raisins, cheese, and onions. It stood on its own. And biscotti dipped in Vin Santo capped a sweet romantic night in the Village. Highly recommended. read more

The restaurant is small but cute and intimate. We had a reservation for four on a Sunday night and it was quite packed but they sat us immediately. The service was quite attentive to us! My husband and I ordered a salmon and carbonara for us to share and we split the eggplant and Burrata for appetizers between all of us. Honestly it was way better than I expected. My friend and I ordered espresso martinis for drinks and they were pretty strong but good. The salmon and the carbonara were really good and we actually managed to finish it between the two of us. I'd give this place two thumbs up and then some. The quaint location and decor of this Italian restaurant feels like a bistro straight out of Italy. Great service by the wait staff and the menu has too many excellent options to count! Nestled in LaGuardia Place so if you're not looking for the bistro lights and Cafe tables outside, you'd miss it just walking by. But they are a neighborhood favorite and on my visit, plenty of regulars were spotted here. It was a solid lunch spot and I'm sure the dinner is something to be desired. Menu of appetizers have a little of everything - cheese plate, fig salad, crabmeat cocktail appetizer, grilled calamari (which I had and totally recommend), soup, and even eggplant. For Entrees, there's a list of pasta dishes or proteins to choose from. I had a hard time choosing given so many tasty choices. In the end, my waiter made the final decision for me between the two pasta dishes - ravioli de fungi (mushrooms) was the winner (tagliatelle ragu was the second choice). 3 Giovani was a nice, solid Italian restaurant. The decor is very well done, but the tables make it very cramped (again, typical of NYC). The only thing I'd note is that the tables near the doorway can really feel it whenever the door opens. The food was also really good! I got the rose carbonara and it was delicious, and the rest of the table also really liked their food. The bread they gave at first was slightly stale, but the tomato spread was nice. The only odd bit with the restaurant was the service. Our waiter was very inattentive and never came to check on us after the food came. The next time we saw him was when he brought the check. On the other hand, the serving assistant/busser was amazing. He made sure our water glasses were never empty and provided excellent service. We sat in their outdoor dining enclosure which had an overhead heater for each table so it felt cozy and comfortable. The service was very attentive and the food was delicious! Bread was offered with a spicy tomato paste and olive oil to start. I ordered the mushroom ravoli and it was superb! The sauce was creamy and rich with flavor. Me and my mother went here early September while Outdoor Dining only rule, it was Friday afternoon, not looked so busy nor hectic. They open a few outdoor table in front of the window and sidewalks where we can keep distance of each customer. Each table were clean and server has mask as well. My mom ordered mushroom soup , I ordered buffalo mozzarella caprese as starter. I actually was so excited since the his day's special was rack of lamb that my favorite, Their Lamb was great, really fresh and juicy, tasty. +Please see the pictures I posted as well+++ I was full but I couldn't skip dessert and we ate Tiramisu and panna cotta complete! The place is a very cozy date night spot and the service is great. We started out with the Burrata which was delicious but the beets and pistachios did nothing to add or elevate the dish in any way would've even been better to just for a simple tomato and burrata combo at that point. I was recommended by a friend and I just had to order the Mushroom Ravioli and it was not bad but it was not memorable. It was very simple in flavor and very underwhelming. My best friend got a special which was a Fettuccini Alfredo with shrimp and asparagus. We joked over how it felt that the chef got 3 shrimps cut it into tiny pieces and spread it around. I did like her dish more cause there was much flavor to her dish. But honestly it reminds me of the kimchi udon from Izakaya Mew. We also ordered the duck legs but we thought they forgot about this dish since they had waited til we finished our pasta to serve it to us. Which sucked to realize since we had been eating super slowly waiting for the duck to eat with our pasta. We took a bite and it was just okay. The cranberry sauce is just cooked cranberries no sauce. It was giving thanksgiving Turkey honestly. We took the rest home but I i wish I had eaten at the rest because when I cut into it at home it was still raw. Let me start off by saying, we had the most incredible time at Tres Giovani and I look forward to returning in the future. Before we even stepped foot into the restaurant, the staff made accommodations for our party of seven to arrive almost forty minutes earlier than our reservation which started us off to a great night. Throughout dinner, our waitress and other staff members attended to our needs quickly- checking in on us often and making sure everything was enjoyable. For an appetizer, the table shared calamari and we all were wanting more. It was grilled instead of fried and was seasoned perfectly. For entrees, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the dishes but personally, I felt that the ravioli and duck legs were the stars of the night- however, every dish was flavorful, beautifully presented with decent portions. We ordered multiple desserts as well as espressos and enjoyed it all. The tiramisu was not overly sweet or heavy, which was the perfect treat to our night. The biscotti was also a nice finish. Not to mention, the atmosphere was cozy and perfect for a family dinner. Our party was set up towards the back of the restaurant which allowed us a bit more privacy and space. Exquisite meal with a very pretty, exotic, and cozy vibe inside! I have a soft spot for places that clearly show that management put thought into their decor and vibe, and let me tell you, it shows here. It's not a huge place, so if you're coming on a weekend, perhaps it's better to make a reservation. On a weeknight though, it wasn't necessary. Tried a bunch of things here: Iced tea - unsweetened and unflavored, but that's how I like my iced teas! It was a big refreshing glass. Grilled calamari - not a big portion, absolutely delicious, and a good one to share. Flounder - comes with a handful of wonderful veggies, the filet was a tad too salty for me, but was soaked in tons of citrusy lemon, which made me enjoy it to the max. Do people say "to the max anymore?" Lamb - a larger-than-life portion, big enough to take half to go, and comes with mozzarella cubes and cherry tomatoes. The lamb was great. Side of cannelloni beans - loved! A big portion for a side. Only taking off a star because the service wasn't that friendly or welcoming, and they actually forgot our side until we asked for it. Bottom line up front: Do NOT eat here! How bad was our dining experience at Tres Giovanni? Well, consider this: Upon dropping our daughter off at her dorm and returning to our suite, my wife promptly prepared a bowl of cereal for herself. We had literally the worst service ever experienced at a restaurant. Granted, the wait staff looked like they were still in high school, and the servers couldn't care less about our requests.  But still - DO NOT EAT HERE! I am not sure how and/or why this place stumbled upon a 4.5-star rating, but it was certainly NOT for the food...and it could not have been for the exceptionally crappy service.  Importantly... we noticed that other diners were quite peeved about the horrific service, too. The chicken parmesan sauce tasted like a watered-down jar of Ragu. The chicken *AND* the penne pasta, though cooked well, suffered badly under the siege of such a bland, tasteless sauce. The grilled salmon was actually prepared well.  However, the discombobulated veggies of chunks of avocado, halved grape cherries, and sliced red onions looked (and tasted) like a medley in search of a conductor; it was a dish that needed SOMEthing to bring it together. And please, please do NOT order the watery, bland "creamy Yukon Gold mashed potatoes." My spouse actually took the cold, watery slush of a mess to the manager and asked them to be heated; he returned with a verbal warning to "Be careful with the hot plate."  He forgot to mention that, though the potato plate was a tad bit warmer, the watery, tasteless potatoes were as cold as they were when they first graced our table.   Even if I were to half-jokingly consider myself a foodie, there is/was simply no excuse for the absolutely horrific service.   Our waiter wrote down our respective orders, and a server brought the dishes out about 15 minutes later... and then we never saw them again. They literally avoided eye contact with us for the next 57 minutes.  After I raised my voice to ask for our bill, after 15 minutes of nothing, my spouse had to leave her seat yet again to request our check.  There is simply no excuse for such poor service. Overall rating: 1.5; the location/proximity to the university gets them a (1); the real gas lamp at the tables garners an extra half-star. Bottom line: Do NOT eat here. read more

I came down to New York from Boston to spend New Year's eve with my brother. It was a special occasion because I don't get to see him that often and the meal was intended to be a special part of our New Years celebration. The food was good but they rushed us so the meal was not relaxing nor pleasant. Two examples: they brought me both appetizers together and before I was even finished with them, they brought my entree, and waited there until I finished my appetizers and then put the entree down on the table! After the entree, they asked to give us our check and didn't offer us a dessert menu (I saw the table next to us had a dessert item on their table), so I asked for one. The server brought one and when he came back, I ordered dessert. He then came back and told us that we would have to move our table to have dessert because there was a party of six coming in (we did have reservations made in advance). We know it was New Years eve, but that is still not a way to treat a customer. We were shocked by the interruption to the flow of our meal and what was being asked of us. It seemed outrageous. My brother strongly expressed his frustration to the waiter that we should not have to move our table. The waiter didn't hear us and was not willing to let us stay at our table for the end of our meal (which, by the way, would have been 5 or so more minutes as my brother did not order coffee and I ordered 2 scoops of sorbet. Immaterial but just info). My brother got more and more agitated. The manager came over and my brother explained what was happening. Rather than ask how he could help or try to make it right and validate the reason for us being upset and frankly shocked, he actually blamed us and told my brother that he was being aggressive and actually forcefully told us to leave! By that point, admittedly, my brother had had enough, raised his voice, and told the manager off (maybe not an ideal response but he was very frustrated by what seemed like an outrageout thing to do let alone on New Years eve). When he wouldn't listen to my brother, I tried to calmly talk to the manager, but he shut off and wouldn't even LOOK AT ME and refused to listen. He actually firmly told us to leave again and treated us like we were the cause of the problem. He took no responsibility for the cause of our upset. Admittedly, my brother did raise his voice when the waiter wouldn't accommodate us but we have never experienced such extreme rudeness at a restaurant, let alone from a manager/owner who was unwilling to even try to resolve what was happening. That is not the way you treat a customer (who has been there many times before by the way). Just to check, I read other Yelp reviews and see that we are not the only ones who have experienced this level of rudeness from the manager/owner, so we know it is not an isolated incident. read more

Given COVID, I haven't dined in person here, but my boyfriend and I have ordered pick-up twice and MY GOODNESS! Consistently al dente scrumptious pasta each time. The first time, I went a little too overboard and got: - Melanzane Al Forno (starter): layered eggplant baked with tomato and mozzarella; not life changing but very good - Polenta (side): made with gorgonzola cheese and truffle tartufata; I wasn't a fan but my boyfriend was smitten so what do I know - Penne Rosé Carobonara: with prosciutto in a tomato-cream sauce; OH MY GOD this is where the lip-smacking comes in - Taglierini Pesto: With a basil pine nut pesto sauce; similarly WOW It had been a few weeks and we had a hankering for pasta again, and true to our memory, the pasta was perfectly soft-but-firm with flavor that complimented without overwhelming the dishes. This time, I swapped mine out for Rigatoni "Buttera" (with hot & sweet sausage, green peas, tomato-cream sauce). I was nervous because I usually am not a green peas gal, but honestly I'm about to reheat my leftovers for lunch and could not be more excited. Plus, our order came with their signature bread (sadly not heated but I threw it in the toaster), cute little butter cups, and extra parmesan! Who doesn't love extra cheese. Came here looking for good Italian food during a trip to New York. We needed an Italian restaurant within walking distance of the area we were in at the time and it came up on Yelp or Google. Overall everything I had was average to good. It could also be due to what I ordered. I had the chicken breast which was done pretty well. Good flavor and nicely cooked. It came with a small amount of potatoes and veggies on the side, just the right portion. I also got a side of mixed baby greens I think. I didn't realize other veggies already come with it. My friend had the lasagna. I tasted it and it was good! I may have secretly liked it a little more than my entree, but I was trying to avoid anything too heavy or with a lot of carbs that day. I didn't care for the bread and brushetta they served for our starter. The bread was hard and not good. I typically like toasty bread but there's a difference when its like toasty fresh and just hard. Plus, I didn't get much taste and thought the oily tomato paste spread would help some, but it didn't. Coming from someone who loves bread this was tough. We didn't do dessert. The restaurant itself was really cute with indoor /outdoor seating and lovely decor. I loved the look and feel of it. Only wish the food I ordered matched that. Maybe I could've ordered a little better, but perhaps I ordered healthy. The service was ok, but nothing to write home about. We came here for a family member's birthday and after a mediocre dinner, we all got really sick within an hour of leaving, possibly from sharing their appetizers. 3 of us had intense stomach cramps for 24 hours. Another 2 from our party couldn't sleep overnight from Gastro pains. When I called the restaurant the next day to let them know, to give them a warning about what it could have been. Delicious food but ......... they sometimes take reservations and other times not. I have been a customer since the restaurant opened and neighborhood resident. I've been told by the manager and owner with the ponytail who thinks he's gods gift to women with an entitled attitude DOES NOT honor your reservation when I took 7 people out of dinner. The bill would have easily been over $1k. My reservation was even confirmed. Great food, terrible owner. The staff, servers, bar tenders and kitchen are lovely and professional.
