At Shirey's suggestion, we used TimberTech Azek boards and found a MAXI version in Coastline grey. We're now done except for the custom railing on order, and couldn't be happier. Lead carpenter Bryan is a deck mastermind who was great at figuring out sound, good-looking solutions to our issues. Both he and fellow carpenter Jeromy were highly skilled and efficient, left the work site immaculate at the end of every day and were also just nice to have around. We like the results so much we added fascia and new board for our catwalks to the original agreement. Shirey's inside staff -- coordinator Ashley and bookkeeper Brenda -- are equally great, and especially good at timely, clear communication. We look forward to using Shirey Home Pro again and highly recommend them.

I was looking to do a garage conversion…read moreproject and while interviewing several companies, Modern Solutions was the only one to see my true vision, meet my budget and have availability. I was very excited to work with them. Xavier was very friendly. Before I had even agreed to hire them, they were working. Getting architectural plans and even helping to build a shed in my backyard in their spare time, to remove all of the items in the garage. At the time, I didn't see it as fishy...now I wonder. Before signing the contract, Xavier and I had to go back and forth, at least 5 times, to make changes. Finally, when we agreed and I signed, I was to pay 33% to begin the project. Xavier was desperate for the money, so wanted me to do an instant wire transfer. For some reason my bank flagged this. So we canceled and I sent a bill payment online. This too was flagged. I went into my bank ready to question why this kept happening. First thing they asked me was...have you researched this company? Well...yes a little. Clearly not enough. Here's where I will break it down for you, so you can make your choice about whether or not you'd like to work w/ this company. 1. Prior to November of 2020, this company was called Marcus Construction & Development (I encourage you to Yelp this company and read reviews). 2. This company is licensed in Arizona. Not Washington (no idea why). 3. This company, after changing its name, had to re-apply for their license in February of 2021. 4. Check BBB. Do a simple web search for Modern Solutions Construction LLC and see what it brings up. If you see the names Malachi and/or Xavier...those two run this company and that is accurate. 5. The website they have listed here is bunk. They have no website. Look for Marcus Construction & Development's website. They have one. After the things I learned, I amicably attempted to let the company go and offer to pay for the costs accrued as of current, in good faith. In return I was given screen grabs of amounts out of their account. When I asked for a detailed invoice, I was threatened. Xavier said he'd come to my yard to take materials he'd paid for (there were none) and put my house under a lien. He also threatened an attorney. This situation is still pending. I have filed a police report and opened a claim with the WA State Attorney General to have them investigated. But I wanted to get this out there for all that are currently considering this company. You don't have to believe me, but please just do your due diligence before you hire them.

I will admit some problems were due to my communication errors; and another challenge was I was not in the state when the project was going on unfortunately. So I appreciate their efforts to accommodate me when I requested pictures of the project progress. one error I made was a wrong paint color and I appreciate that they did not charge me extra for correcting my error. There were however, problems with returning my exterior fixtures back to the locations that they were before the project began (flag mount hose mounts, solar lights, circuit breaker box ground wire covers) I think my feedback for them for their future work, would be to take video or pictures pre and post and compare to make sure everything is cleaned up and returned as expected (so The customer doesn't have to bring it up to them). ​

It was a traumatic experience. There was no direction from the foreman/manager. My requests were not fulfilled. I explained about the areas that I wanted not to be done, as I had planned to later put stained wood siding on those areas and come home to find them Hardi Planked. They stepped on and broke my bushes which are permanently damaged. They broke my kitchen garden window and said it "it looked like it was broken on the inside" inferring that I had broken it. They had garbage thrown all over my yard the entire time and my front covered porch looked like a homeless camp with food left there and thrown on the door leaving grease stains . They also left a microwave there for months to heat their food. Not an experience I would want to relive. Ugh.

At that time, my low slope roof had material that required regular maintenance, which clashes with a set it and forget it guy like me. I received my comprehensive bid, that was much more through than other bids I received, if I even received them at all. When it came time to start the job, I met Camilo's brother Eduardo. Him and the crew did a great job, I again went up on the roof to see what they were doing and they were gracious with their knowledge and answering my questions. Included in this work were other roof related things, like skylights, insulation, and gutters. The bid included all those items that were handled by subcontractors, that shared Edca's meticulous attention to doing good work. This all took place in 2015 and I have watched the crew do 2 neighbors roofs, one last summer and one this week. It reminded me that I need to catch up on my Yelping. I'm on my roof regularly as my big trees like to drop debris seemingly year round and I can handle the maintenance of keeping the roof and gutters cleared. 8 years later, everything still looks great and torchdown materials I selected are performing as expected.

I was called back within an hour or so & was able to get scheduled for the very next morning at 8am. The entire job took about an hour & they were very reasonable. Our project included tile floors in two bathrooms, one heated; rebuilt shower with travertine tile;…read moretwo new shower valves; two new exhaust fans and shower light; prefinished hardwood floors throughout main level of townhouse and on 1 flight of stairs; painting on main level; quartz countertops, sinks, and faucets in kitchen and 3 bathrooms; glass tile backsplash in kitchen. Done to Spec had a competitive estimate compared to several other contractors we researched. The work was done well and overall we're very happy with the results, especially the tile work. They went out of their way to make sure the stairs were done correctly and that the wood matched up well to the tile on the landing. The tile in the bathrooms was very well laid out. The project went more slowly than expected, however, since they're a pretty small outfit, and this was a pretty large project. We weren't under any time pressure, and we felt they took the time to do it right, so it was OK in the end. Communication seemed to get more sporadic over time, and we had a little surprise charge near the end of the project. The charge was justified, just not well communicated. Overall though, we can highly recommend Done To Spec, and would hire them again.
