Perfect spot for a date night! We were drawn to this place for many reasons. From the history and atmosphere to the limited days/hours of service, we knew we were in for a treat. Service was consistent from the moment we arrived. Chef James Hillen rivals some of the top Chefs that we have dined with. The food was FANTASTIC! Our steaks were flavorful and cooked to perfection with an exceptional sear. The garlic mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned and prepared. The homemade mac and cheese was creamy with the perfect crust on top. The salad was a good portion size and tasted like it was freshly chopped and prepared. The asparagus was cooked to perfection and perfectly seasoned. The crème brûlée was balanced and creamy with a delicious hardened caramelized sugar layer. We can't brag on this place enough and definitely recommend this restaurant. This is a place we will dine at again! read more

The most terrible meal. My first time visiting, I am from out of town. The ambiance is lovely, but the meal was astonishingly terrible. I ordered the special fish of the day, mahi mahi, which the wait staff recommended. When it was served, it was like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a very long time, totally dry and touch. The skin was like shoe leather. I mentioned this to the wait staff, who said I will pass this on to the kitchen, that was all. I also ordered the sautéed greens, which had so much lemon that they were inedible. Nothing was offered in compensation. It was extremely disappointing. We ate dinner here tonight with a customer and his family. We travelled here from Florida and South Carolina for the Texas State / Marshall football game. I ordered the ribeye. As a private flight crew member I get to visit a lot of different places. This restaurant is one that I really hope to come to again. We stopped in for dinner while our passengers were at an event at Marshall University. Sat at the bar so we could watch some college football games and interact with the locals and bartender. The service was exceptional!!! The bartender was polite, cheerful, and engaged with the customers. A pianist was playing nearby. The music added to the ambience whereas I've been in plenty of establishments where the music is overpowering because it is too loud or not the right kind of music. The filet was one of the best cuts of steak I've ever had. One of my best friends is a beef cattle farmer and would have said that the cut was perfect. It was cooked to perfection and was not overloaded with butter, sauces, or spices. The two sides I had were asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. I ate everything on the plate and literally would have had a complete second serving if I had the room for it. Dessert was a slice of cheesecake with chocolate syrup. It was what I would call a "proper slice" in that it was not too small or too large. Well done! I look forward to another visit! read more

The soup bisque butternut quash was nasty, salmon in it was off putting. Mussels your way was great with marinara, which was all I could eat. Food came out Luke warm. I got the special, with mushroom. The sauce on the mushrooms was nasty. They was sauce on everything and it made the food taste horrible. Hubby salmon was not even done. We paid over $100.00 for food we both hated. We drove all the way from Ohio for our 20th anniversary and it was so very bad. We also were seated in the middle of the room and my husband had to keep pulling his chair in so the waiters and waitresses could get around him. We were elbow to elbow with everyone, not enough room for the staff. My husband is 5'10 and 175lbs. Ruined our romantic dinner. It was also to loud to hear eachother. The place is very cool looking. As you get inside the building's all you will enjoy a luxurious old decor. It almost looks like a museum with a lot of artefact. I suggest to take a minute to walk around (and look up) to appreciate he architecture. Then, as you get in the restaurant you walk on a classic checker board floor to meet the host by a little desk. The bar is inviting and clashes with the dining room style. However people who were there seemed to enjoy that space. We walked to our table and settle at a wooden table. The chairs are old but very comfortable. Take a minute to admire the detail of the space: interesting art work on the walls, cosy ambiance and lighting, shabby-chic wooden panelling, etc... The menu includes a lot of meat and seafood. I had the filet mignons with a side of Brussel sprouts and mushroom. Everything was perfectly cooked and very good. The service was excellent. Our food was fine. But the quality wasn't equal to the price. I could get a similar meal at a less fancy place. I liked the mushrooms and the Caesar salad was nice with just the right amount of dressing. The ribeye was good though I was surprised it wasn't on the bone. I had the lobster tail, but honestly, the chocolate strawberry, chocolate martini and homemade Mac & cheese were the star dishes for me. My husband had the A. Strip steak, which was very delicious. Had a reservation at 9:30P, called at 9:36P to say we were running a few minutes behind only to be told the kitchen was already closed...with our reservation still on the books. We were almost there and coming from Ashland. This is the second time this has happened. Unfortunate. We won't be back, or try to be, for dinner ever again. Please adjust your hours of operation to match your actual hours of business. Some people travel 30-45 minutes to dine with you only to find out you've already closed the kitchen. Also take your reservation's phone numbers to call and confirm whether or not they're on the way instead of assuming a no-show. read more

Great food with just OK service.... Which unfortunately seems to be a growing trend. I'm not sure if restaurants are not able to find help or choosing to staff light to keep their costs down, but when you have waitstaff that is also floor supervisor, host, and answering the phone at 9 pm on a Saturday night, it ends up being less than the experience a diner would like. I could expand if ownership would like. The food? It was tremendous! The shrimp cocktail - which should be easy to execute is often not executed well - but it was a 10/10 here with firm and chilled shrimp and a cocktail sauce so good my husband has a forkful of it after he ate the shrimp. We both had steaks - and they were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The asparagus sides were bright green and crisp tender - the bottoms were nearly as good as the tips. The baked potatoes were served a little too cool but delicious. Would definitely come back. read more

This was a great find in Huntington and right across the street from our hotel, the Doubletree. This is a historical building, and was once part of the Frederick Hotel (which is now commercial space and apartments). This seems to be the top tier of restaurants in town, and overall they did not disappoint. We opted for burgers because of the late hour but also had a few appetizers. The mushroom soup was very good and would suggest it. We ordered three desserts and two were good and the option of a chocolate bacon brownie seemed like a no brainer. What it was however, was a big no. It was a small "muffin" and it was either old or was just so dry and no flavor. We did tell our server and he apologized for calling it a brownie (his mistake) and did not charge for the desserts. The server was very attentive and with the exception of the one dessert, it truly was a lovely experience. The interior of the restaurant was classic to the period of the building. A great spot if you are looking for a dinner experience in the area. read more

This was my first time to the 21 at The Frederick. I'm honestly not sure if it was even around when I was in college back in the mid 2000's (or maybe I was just a poor college kid and missed out)! I took a friends suggestion on trying the scallops with risotto and a side of asparagus. Wow, for a landlocked state they were fresh and cooked perfectly. Only negative on my scallops, they were a little grainy and needed to be washed a little better. Risotto was nice and creamy and the grilled asparagus was cooked just right (just missing a little seasoning). The restaurant has a unique decor and sometimes has a live piano player (he was a little loud which made it hard to chat with our friends). Overall, a fun atmosphere with delicious food! read more

Had an amazing meal here recently. First off easy parking on the street. This vintage hotel has been renovated and maintained and is a gem in this little town of Huntington WV. Beautiful decor throughout lobby and the restaurant makes a very warm comfortable feel. Since we were a private party we were not in the main dining area (although I do plan to come back.....I did a few days later only to be disappointed there was a large wedding party monopolizing the lobby and restaurant entrance.) Our meal? spectacular. Starters included shrimp cocktail and fried oysters which were so delicious. I thought I only liked raw oysters on the half shell but wow, these fried oysters were pretty darn good. New York steak medium rare was perfectly cooked and delicious. Couple with sauteed mushrooms and another veggie (string beans) made a great meal and it was too much food and i finished the steak later and it continued to deliver. I'll be back soon! read more

Celebrated my sister's 40th birthday with a phenomenal dinner at 21. As soon as you walk in the Frederick building the ambiance is old-world style. It's stunning from floor to ceiling and for a history buff like myself, my senses were electrifying. The gold elephants on the walls, the dim lighting, the cloth tablecloths and live piano player made our dinner very special. I looked at the menu prior to our arrival and I had my heart set on the Beet Salad. Amazing! I practically licked my plate. I chose the Ghost Pepper Pork Chop which was a mamma jamma big daddy bone-in pork chop that tasted out of this world. If you're a carrot fan like me, YOU MUST order Kristen's Carrots as a side. Divine! My sister ordered the Filet which was "like butta" as she said lol. The menu has a great variety. If you can't find something to suit you're fancy there's something wrong with you. This was such a cute restaurant! Was on a business trip in Huntington and it was the perfect, quaint spot for our dinner after a long day of meetings. Situated in what looks like a old cigar bar in an old hotel, the whole appearance, theme and even music takes you back in time. From the paintings on the wall, to the ambiance, to the food, everything was fantastic! Which brings me to the food... so excellent! All of us enjoyed our food. I was in there on Friday evening with two family members and had a very nice meal. The service was great and the food was very good but there were two complaints. Our party ordered two filets and one cheeseburger with Brussel sprouts, spinach and carrots for sides. The cheeseburger was said to be delicious as were the Brussel sprouts. The filets were ordered medium and medium rare. Both steaks were close to medium-well but did taste good, but the biggest problem were the carrots. I was told they were cooked in brown sugar and butter, so I said great because I like them cooked that way. What I wasn't expecting was for my filet to be sitting in a pool of about a half cup of brown sugar "sauce". I'm not sure why the carrots were not put into a side dish, but I had to move my filet onto my mashed potatoes. I could not eat the carrots because they were way too sweet and oddly enough they tasted dried out. Perhaps because they were sliced too thin. We also ordered the crab cake and tuna for our appetizers...both were delicious. Bread was great too. Overall we enjoyed our meal and would recommend. read more

Kind of disappointed with all the hype about this place. The decor and setting was perfect with lots of neat vintage items on display as you enter the building. The service was terrible for our meal. It took forever to get our meal, but it was served hot. I had the crusted trout early bird special and I really did not like the crust. It was ok but definitely not the best trout ever. To save time I asked for the check and sundae at the same time, but guess what I finished my sundae and it was still took 10 minute before we got the check. If you are wanting a traditional upscale fine dining experience, this is the place to go. It is a bit like stepping back into time. I think I caught a glimpse of Don and Betty Draper sipping Martinis at the next table over. It is dark wood, dim lights, and unique decor with elephants on parade around the room. Service was attentive and very cordial and our young server kept us in food and drink throughout the evening. Our dining companions are regulars and were greeted by name and their drink preferences were known. I decided on a classic Whisky Sour to fit with the classic atmosphere. All of our meals were very good. The menu runs to the traditional steak and veal with a few chicken and seafood items for variety. I opted for the chicken, a lovely tender breast in a creamy herb sauce. I requested Risotto instead of the pasta which was provided at no extra charge. Both were good. Nothing spectacular, but solid and well prepared. The price was very reasonable for a fine-dining experience. Cocktails, wine, and full meals, for four people came to under $300.
