I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. My husband and I decided to stop in on New Years Day for a drink and dinner. To start, I ordered a gin cocktail from their specialty cocktail menu and my husband got a beer. Pretty decent cocktail but I would say overall too pricey. The fried green tomatoes were good as well, I was not sure what to expect but was delighted by the good serving temperature and the crunchiness of the fried tomatoes. The whipped feta cheese was a good touch as well. For the main course I got a cobb salad and it was huge! I had to share it with my husband. That was a great portion size, it was loaded with chicken, bacon and other toppings. My husband's burger was also delicious! It was a great size, tasty, and the sides paired well. I typically judge a place by how good their coleslaw is and this place has pretty good slaw. Our server was also the bartender and we came in at a time when they were not super busy, so service went great. The venue is very large, plenty seating, and seems like a great place for large parties to be seated. Parking was also a breeze because they have a lot right near their building. I wish I could give this place a higher rating because it has so much potential. They have 2 entrances and it's not clearly identified where to go to see the hosted for a table. We got our group situated and our waitress immediately showed up with cups of water for everyone. We placed our order for appetizers and they arrived promptly. Followed by our drinks and main entree. The drinks were delicious, they have a pretty decent amount of non alcoholic drinks. The food arrived hot, but they missing flavor. We tried a few different plates and we all thought the same. The Shirley Temple was honestly the best one I've ever had. All of the food was super fresh. The restaurant was clean and the art on the walls was really beautiful. They even have a back patio that you can lounge & drink on. I'm sure this place is super lively on the weekends when it's full. We came in at an awkward time, it was about 2:30 on a Monday, but we still received excellent service from all three bartenders that helped us (shift change)! We came by on Sunday post the morning rush, the music was still going but also seemed like most of the staff was finally getting to take a break. Ok so I truly loved my food & drink here, but the place was empty :-( Visited a saturday in november around 4p and I was nervous it would be slammed due to football. That was not the case. I'm really hoping it was an off night. Because my drinks and food were sooooo good and I really like the Interior decor. I chose the blood orange marg, and it is now one of my fav margs in town. It was smooth, well balanced, a bit light, and just so tasty. When I crushed it and complimented the bartender she was flattered because it was one of her signature drinks! She said all the bartenders contributed to the menu- I love that! I also love loved the creole shrimp toast- it's an app, but almost enough food as a meal. I came here for a private event and had a great time. The food served was really tasty and the bartenders were hard at work. I returned here on a Saturday evening for an espresso martini, it was sooo tasty. One of my favorites I've had out in Jacksonville. Sarah the bartender is the best and always makes good drinks. It pains me a little to rate 1937 three stars. Ambiance is 5 stars, service 3 stars, food 2 stars. This is my third time visiting 1937, second time ordering food, and I actually did not order any alcoholic drinks this visit. I photographed my friends drink which was very pretty and delicious. The plan was to celebrate my belated bday here with girlfriends, and an upcoming friends bday. We planned in advance to get drinks at Gemma down the street first, then head here for dinner - which is what we did. We had a very nice server the whole experience, but; she kept forgetting about us. We sat and sat both when she had another large table, and when there were no other tables. She did mention on one occasion she did apologize for us waiting when she had a large table. But then the rest of the meal, she still forgot about us even after acknowledging, and after her large table was gone which was before all of our entrees came out. 1937 was dead on a Saturday night. I wish this wasn't true because this place has so much potential; I want to see it stay and thrive but the service and food just doesn't match how much effort went into this place to make it so inviting and fun. Our appetizers and desserts did not taste made fresh in house. I actually took two bites of those pretzel bites, and did not want anymore. Which is unusual bc normally, a pretzel of some sort would be my first choice. My burger had hard bits of charred grit from the grill throughout the whole burger. (Did not photograph since again, this was a fun meet up with friends focusing on engaging with them & not critiquing food) When glancing at my friends burger, her's looked like it was okay and char free. I did not say anything about the burger because at this point, in my opinion it was moot. After the so so appetizers, I specifically ordered what I thought would be an easy item that would be fail proof. A burger was not the best choice I guess. I thought the funnel cake would kinda save the day but it came out with hardly any powdered sugar on top at all - which in my opinion, is kinda the main point of the funnel cake. Without it, it's just fried dough. When I asked the server for more powdered sugar, I was given the smallest, not even one ounce serving to put on top of the funnel cake. I took a picture for reference. From apps to entrees to dessert, I was turned off. I had a friend order a piece of pie - without even giving my opinion on the food what so ever, she said it was giving publix's frozen pie brand - Edward's. I feel like little to no food is made in house here and you are just paying for overpriced things you could easily get yourself at the local grocery store, and make quickly at home. And this is not me trying to come for 1937 at all. This is my genuine, honest constructive criticism after spending money here 3 different occasions through out 2023 and 2024. Wednesday night is definitely a great night for specials. Went there with a group of friends for the .25 cent shrimps and $2 PBR beer. Was blown away by the nicely sized shrimp that comes in 3 different varieties. Grilled, blackened, and peel em. They all were amazingly delicious. Each came with cocktail sauce , melted butter and tartar sauce. Service was great, did have to check my bill as they accidentally charged me for 12 shrimps which I did not order. The cider beer was ok. It did have a strong taste of apple cider vinegar which I don't typically like. I'm more of a crisp cider drinker. Surprisingly spacious interior & high ceilings, the artsy decor really gives this place a personality & nice vibe. The bar takes center stage and it's surrounded by a mix of high-top tables. My other half actually suggested this place for dinner because he remembered me showing him pictures of their outdoor area from my first visit. The outdoor patio has a few tables if you're eating as well as Adirondack chairs & lawn games if you're just hanging out & enjoying a few drinks. I've been here twice and an absolute fav from the first visit was the shrimp toast appetizer. The fried oyster entree was also pretty good especially since it comes with a choice of two sides. My friend really liked her grouper BLT from my first visit so I also tried it this time around (only downside is that it came with 1 side). It's a bit pricey for a fish sandwich at $20 but at least it was a nicely sized filet & included a generous amount of bacon! Last time I visited, I opted the poke salad since I wanted something lighter. I would order all of the above again. Our server today was great. I just wish I remembered her name to call her out. Friendly, engaging, attentive and provided good drink recommendations (we originally picked a Neptune & she had a recommendation for the same drink with something else added or substituted that took it up a notch). I don't remember all the details but it was deliciousness in a glass. It wasn't super busy for a Saturday evening which worked out well because that translated to no wait for a party of 8 but I do hope they last. Maybe they get busier later in the evening? The slaw had blue cheese on top. I removed most of it. I failed to read the description, my bad. My office is having our lunch catered to or office next Thursday. Met some friends to celebrate my birthday. It was Sunday so we purposely changed se a time after brunch. Timing was great as the large crowds were quickly thinning. Upon arrival we were a bit confused as we had always ordered at the kiosk and then were whisked away to our table. We tried ordering but were ignored as the kiosk worker was busy closing tabs. Odd as to my previous experience. She finished dropped the tabs and then ordered us to follow her. We were seated and greeted by a server. Hum again different from my 1/2 dozen trips but ok. Drink orders made and then we were greeted by yet another server who wanted to take our drink orders. Drinks delivered and server #2 was on top of us to place an order. She asked again and in the 3rd time we placed app order and late lunch order. By then it was time for round 2 on drinks. Drinks were delivered and we were having a glorious time laughing and catching up. GM Fawn stopped by. Our fish dip was delivered seconds later Calamari. No appetizer plates had to ask twice. While waiting for app plates someone delivered 2 cha sandwiches ordered by my friends. The entree fish came 8-10 minutes later. Our table was full of uneaten appetizers and entrees which we were balancing around. As the afternoon went out it became very apparent that our server was ready to leave. We asked for plates to serve the homemade pie my friend had brought. 2 request and pie was served. Tabs dropped. Immediately gathered and dropped for signing and the gathered from our table as we were enjoying our cocktails. Not the service I had come to love. I want to be perfectly clear the food was yummy and the cocktails exceptional. The execution by our server was less than desirable and if I had let it would have ruined my Birthday. As you enter 1937 you are in awe of the lighting and setup. A very unique way to order, pay and find a place interior or on the patio. It you want full service walk up to the large bar and place your food and drink order. The drinks are unique and many options to pick from. Local beers and great wine options. The food feels like home cooking. It's served on metal platters with paper with large enough portions to fill anyones belly. Cheese dip, gator for starters We opted for the blacken chicken, Unicorn, corn and hush puppies for dinner. Desert was key lime pie and funnel cake. Overall the food was good, but not great. The blackened chicken lacked spice and the fish had a fish taste with tough texture. We both enjoyed the hush puppies and the desert was fabulous. My first visit to 1937 last year was not the best experience, but I'm glad I gave them another chance; 2 alone this week. When I visited for a team lunch this past week I had the 1937 burger which was super delicious; a smash burger with bacon and cheese. Then I went back again for happy hour and tried the gator tail which was also very good; tender and not chewy at all. Interaction with the staff has been nothing but positive; they are all so friendly and inviting. The waitstaff and bartenders were on the ball both visits this week. I have been eyeing this spot for weeks, wanting to give it a try. Guess what, that day came. So what was my verdict? Well if you don't want to read my full review my verdict is mixed. Really well thought out menu, but the execution was not as good as menu made it sound. First, let me address parking. There is a private lot with plenty of parking, we had no trouble sitting down fir lunch. Secondly, service was AMAZING. From the check in (counter service) to the food delivery and beverage refills (table side) all the staff members could not have been nicer. Okay, this is what you care about, the FOOD: Honey Creole Corn - favorite dish of the day, could have eaten a bucket load. SO GOOD. Fried gator tail - served with sauce and a yummy dipping sauce, really good. Brined Chicken Sandwich - this looked amazing on paper, chicken brined then cooked and served with bacon and accoutrements. Just not as flavorful as it sounded. Pickles were missing. Grouper BLT - Grouper served on friend green tomato with bacon. Again sounded good, but lacked flavor. The grouper was thin and firm, different but I liked the idea (at first i thought they brought me chicken, it was that firm), it just did not have much flavor. Quail - did not try it, but not many people serve quail so I am going to give this a try on another visit. As I said, the menu looked amazing but the flavors just were not there. It was like every flavor was turned down a notch to allow for other flavors to shine, so much do that nothing shined. It is new, so I am going to give it another shot. I have been following their Instagram and watching the art on the walls come to life and couldn't wait to stop in and see the finished products. Decided last minute to try the Happy Hour 3-6 . At entry loved the decor and open feeling with a nice size bar, front and center. Immediatly the staff lead the vibe with friendly discussions and food ideas. After a few well drink specials $5 I ordered the hot brined chicken sandwich with a side of noflo slaw. Great eatzzzz. The menu has many items I would return to try and a variety from land to sea offerings. They have a backyard full of toys and ready for events and gatherings. 1937 Spirits and Eatery We decided to try 1937 for the first time Saturday evening. We walked in at 8:50 and there wasn't a host at the stand. We waited a few minutes and finally an employee that was leaving let us know the host would be with us. Another few minutes pass and the host comes over. She wasn't super friendly. It wasn't busy inside. We did see a decent sized party in the back. The host sat us and told us about the fried Mac& cheese bites that weren't on the menu. Our server Christine came over and took our order and we decided to get the app that was suggested. It was pretty good. 6 balls in all so easy to share. They had cheese and bacon on top and were on a light bed of marinara. While eating our app the host came over and ask how it was and in the middle of me answering she turned around and started talking to a server cutting me off. Our food came and it was pretty good. Our server didn't check on us until we were almost completely done and my bf had wanted another cider and I wanted more ranch but it was too late at that time. While we were eating we saw the host, which we found out later was a manager, just chatting with ppl at the bar almost the whole time we were there. Some looked to be off the clock employees. She didn't seem to care much about checking on tables. I had the house brined chicken breast fried without onions with fries. It was really good but half way through my tomato fell out and I realized they didn't cut the stem out of the tomato. Not the end of the world but it shouldn't have happened. The fries were cooked perfect for me and lightly seasoned. The ranch had a great flavor. I would have preferred it a little creamier but that's my personal preference. My partner had the 1937 burger and honey corn. He said the burger was really good but was annoyed because it was supposed to have carmelized onions and they were just sautéed so he had to pull them out as he doesn't like sautéed. He said the honey corn just tasted like corn in honey. Nothing amazing. He also had an Ace pineapple cider that was good. We let our server know about the two mishaps with our food and she was super apologetic and went and let the manager know. I love the outdoor area here! There were 7 of us in our group. So I called ahead and was told they don't make reservations. Turns out that was fine bc the place wasn't crowded at all. Two people in our group arrived early, grabbed a table and ordered a drink. When the rest of us arrived we stopped at the bar and ordered drinks which we promptly received. The other two folks we're still waiting for their beer.... Ordered the Crispy oysters with broccoli and hush puppies. The broccoli was very good! The oysters were so overcooked that I'm not even sure there we're actually any oysters. They were just crispy chunks of breading. The hush puppies were the same. We really want to like this place - the outdoor area is great and the menu has some great sounding food options. But this is our 2nd time and I've not seen any improvement. Oh, 1 more thing! While the restaurant has a cute ambiance, ordering gave me Fuddruckers. You had to stand in line, order your food, take a number and try to remember what you ordered when the food was delivered to your table. The food wasn't bad; in fact I really enjoyed the massive pretzel. Fast forward to a year plus later --- they have revamped this place and it's really nice! They now have a hostess, servers who are attentive and a feel of a place I would like to have a good dinner or drinks. 1937 Spirits and Eatery has been on my go to list since it opened. I finally had a chance to go last night and it pains me to give this review 3 stars :( We'll start with the good. There's lots of parking! I always get nervous going to new places downtown. The inside is absolutely beautiful - you can tell a lot a time, attention, and money went into this place. When I arrived - there was one large party and a few other smaller parties. I met 4 other parties there so we were a small group. I would say it was 30% full. This is where it went downhill. I expected this place to be full on a Saturday night. It wasn't. Not even close. That should have been my first clue! It took FOREVER for our server to acknowledge us - realistically probably 20 min. It seemed like every time she made her way to our table was every 20-30 min. Getting drinks and food ordered was painful. This level of service in a restaurant that was 1/3 full is unacceptable. It wasn't for a lack of staff either. There was 5-10 people working and just standing around. Our food probably took 30-45 min to arrive. Overall the food was good. I had a tuna poke salad which I enjoyed. There's a real lack of vegetarian mains unfortunately so I settled on fish. I do have the say the serving of tuna was heartier than I expected. I also had their "In a pickle" martini which I enjoyed. This place is a VIBE! The artwork, the velvet seating, the outdoor area, even the bathrooms it is very modern and chic. Loved the atmosphere. The service was ok, you have to order at the front and then sit down, so you don't have a server in case you need to ask for anything. We had to go to the bar or walk by the kitchen to ask for a honey mustard for the chicken they forgot, but when found they were super nice. Very small parking lot, so def get there early on a busy night like a weekend. As for the food delicious! Literally every single thing we had was amazing. And it came out QUiCK! There's outdoor seating and the seating was open seating so you had to just find open seats, luckily we found a booth that just needed to be cleaned. The staff was very friendly and explained everything to us. You have to order your food in the front and they'll bring it out to you. We ordered the chicken tender meal with a salad and the honey creole corn. The corn was sooo good, the tenders were nice and hot. We also ordered the JAX hot chicken sandwich with fries, hubby said it was good but not hot at all. We also got two cocktails (a margarita and the peca Fresca) both very good! Ordered the beet salad and shrimp toast - I'd get both again. For the beet salad, the whipped feta was placed weird on my tray under the greens, so I didn't get to it until I was almost done w my salad. The overall flavor was great, the beets were delicious, and I loved the crunch of the roasted almonds.. I think it should've been served in a bowl versus a tray. The paper it was on was all soggy from the salad/dressing - not sure if that was a plating mistake. Enjoyed the shrimp toast. It's one of my favorite dishes to eat and make - so I was very skeptical, but I liked their take on the dish and the flavors. I also loved the greens on the plate, but I would not serve the toast on top since the toast wilts them. Would have been nice to see them separated and the greens lightly dressed. We came into 1937 Spirits & Eatery for the first time last week before a concert. We were early enough to partake in their Happy Hour. I had 2 lovely Old Fashionds. We shared the Beet Salad and truly enjoyed it. I had the brined Chicken Sandwich and Fries. The Sandwich was delicious but the fries could have been hot. If the fries had been hot I would have given a 5 star review. Service was great and the Manager checked in at our table. read more

Somehow this is a 2nd review that Yelp won't let me out of?!? I posted my original review on the Yelp site for the event. Nice trendy decor, bright colorful painted walls. The bar on the interior of the room is a good location. The two outside seating, eating locations are idea; the back of the building with Astro-turf is great for the yard games out there. read more

We were excited to hear a new restaurant opened up but didn't have many expectations. We happened to be driving by one evening, so we stopped in and WOW. We sat at the bar, the restaurant was lively with lots of patrons. We checked out the menu and ordered some drinks. I ordered the pimento cheese for an appetizer and a burger for my meal, and my boyfriend went for the meatloaf. The pimento cheese was on point, super yummy and flavorful. My burger was delicious, smashed patties with fries. By the time i was taking my 2nd bite my boyfriend had finished his meatloaf. He said it was delicious. I did steal one of his hushpuppies and they were on point. Definitely will be back. read more

I went back as promised. This time I went at a different hour. We stopped by after a show for drinks and the after 10pm bar menu. We decided to sit at the bar again, since you get immediate service there. Drinks were promptly served after we ordered. Volume in the place was moderate so it was a great venue to drink and talk. Food was fine. Service was "meh". First, everyone was kind and happy. The only downfall was staff were busy cleaning and probably doing side-work, so it was tough to get their attention to order more drinks, food, and ask for the bill. read more

This place is excellent. It's a super nice spot, really nice let decorated. Interior is real trendy bar like area. We sat outside, and it was great. They have sail shades, turf, outdoor games, plenty of seating for small groups. The service the whole time has been excellent. You order at a counter and they bring you food. The counter service was nice and all the people who came by were great. There were a lot of bugs and they even brought us covers to cover the food! Now we ordered the loaded hush puppies for an appetizer. They were delicious. Sweet, with cheese and bacon and a creamy ranch and scallion sauce. We shared the grouper sandwhich and the house burger. The grouper was a 5/5 - nicely cooked, horse radish sauce, fried green tomatoes and bacon. Was our favorite thing of the night. The burger was real good too, especially the carmelized onions. The sides were different. My partner didn't care for the broccoli- and to be fair, it's sweet? But it's a sweet butter sauce, which I really liked. I didn't care for the creole corn but she smashed it. Plenty of onions and peppers in a creamy sauce. Loved it here would def come back. read more
