The ambiance is the best I've seen in Jackso, MS thus far. Perfect natural lighting and the accompaniment of a real piano playing in the background really brought it all together. The prime rib was excellent. Creamy potatoes weren't hot, but they would have tasted great if they were. Mimosas are awesome!! Sarah was an excellent server. Will definitely return. Damn I hate to give this place a mediocre review but that may be what it takes. I love the place. Love the neighborhood. Love the owner. And used to love the restaurant. The last couple of times at the Sunday brunch though, it was just simply lax. The food was mediocre at best. The mahi-mahi was baked dry. Why spend the money on this fish and then ruin it when you could have used catfish and had it turn out better? Meatloaf was bland. Collard greens mediocre at best. Quiche was good. Other veggies were ok. Just nothing special for a place that you EXPECT special! Like I said, I love this place and hate to leave with the whole lunch party making well deserved negative comments. Even including our waitress. We just happened to get the worst one. Most of them are really good. Peter, have you hired a new cook? And, the place was packed. Go figure. Update. Had lunch at the library lounge today. The catfish blue plate special was great. Good fish, really good greens and fries. Also very reasonable at $10. Great atmosphere. Also after our last experience at 1908, I ask about the chef. Was told that the old chef had been replaced by the guy that prepared our lunch today. Good move!! I took my girlfriend out for a post-Valentine's Day dinner. We choose to go out AFTER Valentine's Day for we find that it is usually more quiet and intimate. We chose 1908 Provisions because we've never been there which is hard when you go out a lot in the Jackson area. We had an 8 oclock reservation because we wanted to show up early at their cocktail lounge, The Library, where we've been before and have enjoyed it. We walked in and sat down. I ordered a gin gibson, my girl, a Vieux Carre. We waited until the bartender was done yammering on about whatever the hell was going on with his life to the server before he decided to make our drinks. My Gibson was a no brainer; gin, dry vermouth, cocktail onion, stirred and strained, don't really have to measure, a Vieux Carre however, is a complicated drink, it's also $12. I watched him fumble with ingredients as he's also getting instructions from the server; rye whiskey, cognac, Benedictine, sweet vermouth, peychaud's bitters, and angostura bitters, all were free poured, nothing measured, Benedictine didn't even make the cut, and as a result, tasted like a hodgepodge of musk not quite covered with sweet, it tasted nowhere near $12. We were also starving, so we ordered a small plate before our reservation and decided on the pimento cheese dish. Now, to be fair, I'm not a pimento cheese fan, but my girl is, and it's our Valentine's Day, and I'm hungry. This pimento cheese however tasted as if they used cheddar out of a Kraft bag, didn't really stick together and lacked overall taste. We cut our losses and began to head to 1908 Provisions next door. From the beginning, I immediately wasn't impressed. For a tablecloth establishment and prices they charge I expected more. The hostess greeted us with acid wash jeans that looked like they first premiered in a White Snake video, our drink menus had the previous guest's dinner stains on them, and the silverware was spotty. Still starving, we ordered the cherry neck clams. Clams lacked taste and seasoning, until you got to the broth which was so salty it was inedible. Next, we ordered the herbed potato gnocchi, which my food runner called them "ganaches", they were neither ganaches or gnocchi, more like a potato pancake that was cut into fourths drowned in some bland like comeback dressing. To our surprise we also received table bread before our entrees, me lady ordered the pecan crusted lack of ramb and I ordered the special, almond flounder. The bread had absolutely no taste, completely neutral, and I'm a chubby guy, and you have now made me not like bread, which also came with butter....that had no taste. The entrees arrived, the lamb was overcooked and looked as if it was dredged in an overpowering demi and was then sprinkled with pecan fragments that you would find in a fro-yo place. The fish lacked almonds all together, and both were served on a bed of some kind of sweet potato puree which was so dense I could've used it for spackling stucco homes in Florida. So, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 dishes, they managed to cook five dishes that all completely lacked taste. I have to say, a true talent! Not that it was over seasoned, or I didn't like the taste, I mean, I received the same satisfaction if I was playing a video game and my avatar just powered up with food. If you took 8 random ingredients and threw them in the air, whichever ones landed in the pot that's what you cooked, the result would've been better. After paying $170 for Sysco products, I assure you, I will not be back and I hope that the chef/owner/manager of that place truly understands what a historic place they are in and quite performing such a disservice to it. read more

I am incredibly impressed with this place. My husband and I shared the crab claws as an appetizer and they were perfectly cooked with garlic and butter. I chose the redfish with a sweet potato crust over Delta grits with a honey mustard sauce - unbelievable. Perfect in every way and a very reasonable serving. My husband had the crab cakes with Sriracha honey and guacamole and it was delicious. All the flavors melded together perfectly. And the prices are reasonable - entrees averaged $15. I will definitely recommend this place to everyone I know and come back often. read more

I had heard some positive things about this place in the past, when it first opened up under a new name, but hadn't made it out because we're never out that way. Decided to give it twhirl after joining yelp and seeing the positive reviews. The home is just beautiful, a great setting and I expected great things. I was a little disappointed. Food wasn't really bad, just not very good, and overpriced what it was. I had a California red wine, usually a decent one. It was served well above room temperature, tasted like vodka and grape juice because of the mistake. I gave 2 stars because It's worth visiting to see the building, and because the service was okay. Can't recommend the food. Edit: I just joined the site so I didn't know their were filters. Checking there and seeing what are obviously real reviews and seeing all the negative ones probably would have changed my mind about visiting. read more

Staying at the Fairview Inn, so this was a natural choice for dinner, since it's 25 steps from my room! Everything was delicious! Had the butter lettuce salad and the redfish. Loved everything. Service was great. It was really slow in the restaurant? Monday night, maybe? But I would recommend 1908 Provisions! My first time here but would definitely give them another try! I've lived in Jackson for 10 years and had never eaten here. My husband and I couldn't find a menu online for brunch but decided to go anyways. We were greeted immediately and asked about reservations. We had to wait only 5 minutes or so even without, this was around 12:15. The atmosphere was spectacular! A piano was being played without being too loud, spacious... the place has a touch of southern class. There is no brunch menu online because it was buffet style. When I think of buffets, cafeteria style food comes to mind. This was anything but that. It was AMAZING. They had it presented beautifully in large dishes on a round table. The food included redfish with some type of crawfish cream sauce, pork tenderloin, salmon, turnip greens, fried chicken, sweet potatoes and more. The salmon and redfish were perfect. They have a separate area where someone makes fresh waffles and omelets with egg white option. I wish they had some salsa for the omelet, next time I'll ask. Desserts were well portioned and tasty. The creme brûlée touched the spot! Only spoke to our server for the bill and to ask for drinks, can't comment much on that. I can say if you haven't eaten here GO!! Open door windows light this beautiful open space that goes well with the rest of the historical plantation-style Fairview Inn. Sometimes a grand piano playing in the Inn's entry hall lends a soothing ambiance. Service has always been on point and very courteous, although I've never been when it's very crowded. It's a seasonal menu so it's changing, but I always love their vegetarian options. They have great, fresh, local products they use to make very good appetizers (flatbread vegetarian), dips (edamame hummus last time), soups, salads (baby spinach and wild arugula ones are delicious), sides (grits, squash, Farro, snap peas) They also have a vegetarian entrée. Meat-eater friend of mine said their duck is the best. Creme brûlée is my favorite dessert of all time and they know how to do it right here. There seasonal fruit cobblers are also delicious. Cocktails are great here too. Good wine selection. The cocktails change and have traditional options. Check out The Library bar and lounge next to the restaurant, the cocktails are the best and you can get smaller servings of certain items from the restaurant. Amazing atmosphere inside is a library and outside is a traditional southern porch plus a side patio under an enormous magnolia tree. read more

Overall good...but my husband found a bug in his spinach. We are both vegetarian and love to eat fresh local produce! So we understand that spinach grows in the dirt and has bugs in it. We did not want to make a big deal, so he just removed the bug and did not finish the spinach. I would suggest that the kitchen institute a more strict quality control to make sure this doesn't happen! I would also suggest that the servers learn a little more about the drink menu. We asked two of the staff what they recommended, and both said, "I don't drink, sorry." I would suggest that even if they do not drink that they just learn a little about the menu and be able to recommend drinks based on customers' tastes. This was the worst service I've had in years, and some of the most disappointing food. Our server ignored us, and we had to send back all four of our entrees. Two were under-cooked and two were cold. The service was slow, and our server had little knowledge of the menu or desire to make our visit pleasant or memorable. Most disappointing of all, when we let the management (the owner, Peter) know that we were unhappy with our meal and service, he neither apologize nor attempted to improve what was left of our meal. The hosted did comp us for one round of drinks in the end, but what we really would have preferred was an apology or some actual concern about our experience. In sum: We had high hopes for the new 1908 Provisions, but sadly, we will definitely not be back. read more

This place is a hidden gem! The outside has a beautiful garden with tables outside that are lit up at night. Once inside the restaurant is modernly decorated with a very low key and mature ambience. The staff is very professional, inviting and knowledgeable about the grounds of Fairview! The food was some of the best we have had since moving to Mississippi! I have only been to the Sunday brunch buffet and not the normal order-from-the-menu restaurant, so this review is incomplete. But regarding the Sunday brunch buffet, the meal was outstanding. It has been consistently excellent since I first went when it was called Sophia's. It is a small, all-you-can-eat buffet - only about 2 dozen items on 4 tables - but each and every item is delicious. It starts at 11 so the breakfast items are limited, just made-to-order omelets and waffles. The cold items include fruit, salad, pasta salad, smoked salmon and shrimp. You must try the salmon with cocktail sauce (it's to die for). The main lunch table has about a dozen items of various meats and vegetables. There is a dessert table with about 6 different items. Unlike some other buffets I find 1908's value outstanding because it's only $20 and each and every item is worth eating. read more

We had a large party for a business dinner and the staff were very accommodating. The restaurant and Inn are both equally beautiful and charming. Our out-of-state guests were more than impressed with the atmosphere, history, and cuisine, as were we. Excellent. Went there on a date recently. We had the smacked salmon app which was wonderful with the avocado spread on crostinis. Not fishy at all, yet flavorful. I had the crispy pork tenderloin - wow! So delicious and the peach demi was the perfect sweet sauce to go with it. My date had a filet that was perfectly cooked to his liking, I had a bite as well. So tender! We ate at the bar and the bartender was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. Made us some perfect old fashioneds as well! Only reason for 4 stars vs. 5, they seemed to be out of several things, especially on the drinks menu. read more

As always, we were pleased with the overall quality of food, service and atmosphere. One suggestion: We were glad to share a small table as we were only a couple and you had a full house (2/13). However, these single tables are so small it is difficult to accommodate the main course, sides, wine and water glasses and still maintain eye contact with the person across the table. On my most recent dinner visit, the restaurant was pretty much empty. The restaurant is small so it's easy to hear the conversation across the room. The music completely kills the ambiance. It made me feel awkward the way you do when you're in an elevator having a conversation and then someone else comes on. My boyfriend agreed. Anyway, the staff was so friendly and helpful from the time we walked in the door. We talked to the Hostess a little about the Fairview. Our server was fantastic. We remembered him from another restaurant we use to dine at regularly. He didn't make us feel rushed and timed everything so well. The Bartender makes a very tasty Old Fashioned. It took our appetizers & dinner forever to come out. It could have been because of That party that was nextdoor to us and they were too busy. I'm not sure. By the time our dinner came, we were a little disappointed. We had the butcher's cut of the night and a scallop dish. Our steak looked a lot smaller than what our server said it was supposed to be. I imagine he saw the look on my face because he immediately went over to the manager. She came over to our table to make sure our dinner was fine. We didn't tell her about the steak, but maybe we should have. It was a bit expensive for what we got. The Scallops were too salty, but again we didn't say anything. I think The Manager knew. She gave us a dessert complementary and a french press coffee. We just ate the food because we were starving and didn't want to Wait any longer so we didn't see the point in complaining. For dessert we had Tiramisu and Strawberry Shortcake. The Tiramisu tasted more like instant pudding but the strawberry Shortcake was delicious! I think it was supposed to come with Lemon Sherbet or something but it came with Vanilla Ice cream instead which I think went well with it. Maybe ask to substitute if you try it. Overall, the only thing we really enjoyed was our service. The menu is all over the place. Honestly, it isn't that good for the price. I'm not sure who the Chef is since Chef Gary isn't there anymore, but they could use some of his old recipes or food similar. read more
