A true hole in the wall find! An extensive menu with lots of customization options. I got the signature breakfast sandwich on a croissant. So good! Mae was also very nice and patient despite it being busy and seemingly understaffed. The historical theme brings the cafe to life and it was fun reading all the different names of food and drinks. Unfortunately once again they disappointed us. 1.We ordered a vegan butter everything bagel with avocado, egg, vegan cream cheese and plant based butter. We wanted extra toasted but it came not toasted at all and very saggy and looked bad. The avocado was not fresh and there was no cream cheese. (I liked the butter tho) 2. We got iced matcha with shot of espresso and caramel and Praline. Tasted so watery and i am pretty sure there was no espresso added. I had a great lunch today from 1872. I had been here before for coffee, but never a meal. Their menu is surprisingly big and diverse, with vegan and gluten free options. I had the 1872 veggie wrap which came with tofu, hummus, spinach, onions, and tomatoes. It took a few minutes to make, and I realized why when it came out warm! I grabbed a fresh fruit cup to complement my wrap, and would have gotten a coffee too had I not already had a ton this morning. I am definitely interested in returning to try their egg sandwiches and breakfast pizza. The cafe itself has a decent number of tables, and outdoor seating is available too. They also sell some essentials like paper towels (never a bad thing to offer for busy people), cookies, and grab & go snacks. The other great part about this place? A parking lot! 1872 is worth a 5 minute drive out of the lunch desert that is downtown these days. read more

I ordered a Suzy B breakfast pizza. I did enjoy it. I thought the crust was great. This reminded me of a cheese steak pizza more so than a breakfast pizza. The sauce on top is very interesting. It seems like a cheese sauce, but also seems to have some ranch or horseradish flavor to it. Interesting. The coffee arrived and the order was accurate and carefully packaged, which I appreciated. If you want more of a traditional breakfast pizza, I'd pick a different one. read more

Came here for my for my first time today excited to try the coffee because I have seen only great reviews for this cafe. Arriving we came to a locked door with a sign saying they were closed an hour early today. We began leaving when the owner saw us and came outside and told us to come In and order whatever we wanted and could stay until they were done cleaning. We both ordered a simple coffee though because didn't want to be a bother. Had the Italian macaroon flavor and it was delicious. We were able to sit down on the couches and enjoy our coffee and the awesome vibe the place gives off. It is very open classy and modern at the same time - a place you could easily hang out all day In. After talking to the owner we found out he was closing an hour earlier because one of his staff members is being quarantined for covid as well as his whole family. The owner closed early to make his staff member and his family fresh meals to take over to them personally so they can enjoy a nice meal and can have a day off of ordering food to be delivered. I ordered the vegan toona sandwich, the vegan chili fries, and the banana bread. I am not a vegan whatsoever (just aim to eat plant based options) so when I say it was SURPRISINGLY GOOD I really mean it! The banana bread was good aswell, not mind blowing but definitely would order again. Now the reason I took away 2 stars is because of the vegan chili fries. They were the downfall of this order. The fries didnt seem seasoned and the chili was literally just beans bc there was barely any thing else I saw on my fries. There was so little liquid I had to drink water after my second bite. *Breakfast Review The place has a history theme and is beautiful. But the food was inedible! My husband ordered a scrambles egg and cheese and an everything bagel, it came with no cheese and the bagel was jot even buttered- also the egg was not scrambled but rather it looks like they bake their eggs cause it was hard and all brown, it looked gross and tasted worse! I ordered the Veggie egg croissant, the croissant was good but my egg was cooked the same way and there were barely any veggies on it. We also ordered a cinnamon roll to share but it was so hard that we each took a bite of it and put it down.. The coffee was decent.. I found this place randomly when looking up vegan breakfast places. They did not disappoint! There's a large parking lot. Plenty of seating. The decor is nice and hip and young. Staff was super friendly and patient with our complicated order! Plenty of vegan and gluten free options. Ive been visiting coffee shops for 20 years out of my life and unfortunately this was my first time here and the worse experience I've ever had at a coffeehouse, food was bad, there was a decision made that my drink should be a part of a training process that took almost 7 minutes to complete. In result i ended up with a disappointing cup of mocha, the presentation was a turn off with the cup being bent and the top not fitting properly clear signs of overflow along the side of the cup. I still had high hopes in spite of the presentation, which only led to my disappointment of receiving a luke warm unsweetened Mocha with an abundance of froth on top. The sprinkles on top of this cake was the customer service was subpar. I trashed the coffee and left, i will never ho back there. read more

I was very happy with my experience at 1872 Cafe. It's a high-ceilinged space on Main Street with a small library/book selection, a wide array of coffees, teas, wraps, sandwiches and other offerings, and lots of great seating and spots to socialize, meet, read, or enjoy some peace and quiet. They are under new management, and Paul was very friendly and easy to talk to, all while training an employee on how to prepare my order. I got black coffee, a veggie wrap (tofu, tomato and spinach in a gluten-free wrap, also vegan!) and a dairy-free matcha latte, which was done quite well. The conscientious and friendly service, coupled with the fantastic interior space and atmosphere, have made this one of my favorite cafés in Rochester. I would even place it a bit above Java's, because it's calm, quiet, not overwhelming/full of hipsters (sorry Java's) and the high ceilings are a huge win. Although, their food/beverage game is not as diversified/specialized as Java's, but hey, what are you going to do. All in all, I highly highly recommend 1872 Café! Probably the best thing I can say about it, is that it is the kind of business that you will not only feel good at, but feel good about supporting. read more

I haven't fully decided if this is a three or four star location, but it certainly isn't five. My biggest issue with the cafe is that any food that has to be prepared takes no less than ten minutes to prepare, if not longer. I've waited fifteen minutes for a breakfast sandwich on two occasions. I'm currently passed my ten minute mark waiting on a wrap. Just a wrap. That's it. And there are no other customers waiting. They are just incredibly slow every single time. The food has been decent. They have a huge apple fritter. My second breakfast sandwich was not as great as the first which left a good impression. I don't think their pricing is reflective of the quality of some items - like the small slices of cold pizza in the case should not cost over $3. *Came back and reduced it to two stars because after fifteen minutes I asked for a refund to leave and they couldn't give me a refund because the manager wasn't there. Wonderful, amazing, perfect, delicious. Synonyms for these breakfast sandwiches, no joke. I've ordered a couple times and it never fails, which just makes me want to try the lunch items so bad. Absolutely the worst dining experience. The Vegan platter is the worst store-bought concoction I have ever come across. This restaurant took Ore-Ida Gluten Free Frozen Thick Cut Steak (did not cook them fully) and placed them on a plate, then poured Great Value six bean mix and then added the worst/cheapest possible vegan burger on top and called it a platter. I've been eagerly waiting for this cafe to open up on West Main Street, and hoping I would not be disappointed. I was not! The building is gorgeous. The staff are friendly--to customers and to each other. The food--sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, and baked goods--are made on site and are really quite good! Coffee shop food is often not very good, and coffee shop baked goods are often shipped in frozen. But the sandwich (black forest) I had was quite tasty, with exotic and exciting ingredients. The (tomato veggie) soup was full of big fresh tasting vegetables. The (peach) muffin was fabulous. The iced coffee is good, too. I haven't tried any of the fancier drinks, yet. I work near here. The owner here was so nice. My girlfriend and I walked up at 1:03pm and the door was locked, they are normally open until 2pm on Saturdays and this was our first time there. There was a sign on the door that said they were closing at 1pm that day so we just said to ourselves we'd try here another time. The owner noticed us and came out the side door saying he'll unlock and let us in because they were still in there anyway. Turns out they closed early to cook and do take out for friends/family quarantined for covid. Such good people. Coffee was good and the inside of this place was very cool. This is a cafe Rochester should be proud of. Less than 1/2 mile from the Susan B. Anthony House, 1872 was the year of Susan B's highly publicized act of civil disobedience, her arrest for voting. Women who dared is the theme that is carried throughout the decor and menu. People who lean feminist and progressive will feel in their element. For those who do not, do yourself a favor and get delivery. If I could give this place 6 stars for food I would. The menu is exhaustive with numerous clearly marked vegan and gluten free items in each category as well as options to customize sandwiches with gluten free bread. The person taking my order understood what each distinction meant as well and offered gluten free crackers with my soup - a treat I have NEVER had even at dedicated GF restaurants. I was grew a bit impatient when food took a long time to arrive, but one bite and I quickly realized that the perfection was worth the wait. I suspected that the soup was made to order and not ladled out of a cauldron. I asked about it and it was confirmed. It really makes such a difference. The steak sandwich had slices of 1/8 inch thick filets and was so just juicy enough to moisten the slightly dry gluten free bread. The cheese was lusciously stringy but broke on its own. And the sweetness of the peppers was a welcome surprise, though I could see some not appreciating it. read more

We were shocked at the selection they had and not only did they have gluten free sandwiches, They also had many gluten free deserts. This small owned cafe is amazing! I went for a friend's birthday today. Prices are reasonable, the food was outstanding, and they had options for all the picky eaters in my group. Went here once to see the Cynthia Nixon rally, and I thought it was a rather nice cafe. There is plenty of space, the atmosphere is nice, and what's not to love about the $4.00 pizza/drink/chips combo? The main drawback is that it's kind of out of the way and not in the most glamorous neighborhood, but that's okay. It's a cool historical building and the general vibe there is relaxing and conducive to studying. I'd go there again. read more

That alone is enough for me to give a coffee shop 5 stars, but this location also has historical significance AND the sales are are used to support ministries for Spiritus Christi Church. The location is where Susan B. Anthony and several other women illegally voted for candidates supporting women's suffrage in 1872. The ministries that the proceeds from the cafe support include prison outreach and the mental health center that the church operates. The interior to the cafe is cozy yet bright, and the service is always friendly. Rotating soup and sandwich specials are always delicious. Today my friend and I had two homemade scones-- one was apple cheddar and the other was a quiche Lorraine scone. I don't normally like scones, but theses were so good. My only complaint is that the hours or sort of limited, but I think it is because the cafe is so new. I am sure that once able to, they will expand their hours. read more

This is a coffee shop, so the lunch choices are limited, and largely pre-made, but they seem to be fresh. The interior of the place is gorgeous, and a welcome sight after a scary drive. The service was friendly and efficient. Their coffee selections are the usual stuff. The coffee was better than average, and it hit the spot. I ordered the special of the day, I have a soft spot for Sloppy Joe's, and it was tasty, the side potato salad was a bit small, but also tasty. I ordered one of the soups of the day, mushroom gouda, and I found it salty and not really fresh, it tasted like reheated pre-made soup. Stopped in for coffee and breakfast. The egg and cheese bagel was microwaved to death. It was so hot, I couldn't even hold it. The cheese was almost evaporated and the bagel turned into a sponge. Why not just toast the bagel and put the microwaved egg on after? Also they don't accept American Express. Coffee was great. Very clean and Modern. Nice atmosphere - lots of historical liberal women mentioned in the deco.
