Came in on a very busy Sunday morning but there was still seating. There is also seating upstairs. They share a parking lot with Dogtown. I'm not sure if the hours ever overlap but I could see the lot getting full then. The baristas themselves were helpful too. I ordered the frittata and chai both of which I recommend. I didn't check to see if there was wifi, but if there is I recommend it as a place to work, at least upstairs. read more

Met up with a friend here, and I believe it's owned by the same folks who run Dogtown. This space has seen a few concepts come and go over the years, but honestly, I think this is the best iteration yet. The vibe is great two levels, lots of light, and if you're a plant lover, you'll be in heaven. I tried the peanut butter bar (absolutely scrumptious!) and ordered a cappuccino with a shot of toasted marshmallow. It was nice, though I didn't really taste much of the flavor shot and the drink was a bit small. Oh well still cozy and satisfying overall. As a college student, Hydra is my multiple times-a-week stop for a super fast breakfast between classes. I have tried many of their drinks and food, and I know for sure that they have the absolute best quiches in Rochester, and their desserts are just as good. The key lime pie bars are one of my favorite desserts. I love their lattes and chai, but I always find their matcha lacking. The powder is always clumpy on the bottom, and the flavor is off, but other than that, their drink menu is great! I do have to knock off one star because their bottom-floor seating is a bit cramped, and there is no accessible entrance or way to get to the second-floor seating, which is hard for my disabled family members. They also do not have an accessible bathroom if you can get inside. The staff here is super friendly and always has the food and drinks pumping out like crazy and I have never had to wait more than ten minutes for food and drinks even at super busy times. Overall a great coffee shop, but keep the accessibility in mind! read more

Lovely little coffeehouse. The vibes here are wonderful; with lots of bright natural lighting and hanging plants. Plenty of seating with a cozy upstairs level. The pricing is very affordable and priced lower than many other coffee shops in the area. I ordered an iced matcha. It was delicious and the helpful barista working went out of her way to inform me they don't automatically make it with sugar. The breakfast sandwich rolls here are some of the best I've ever had and the maple sriracha sauce pairs so well with the sandwich. House made syrups are really good too! Hydra is a coffee shop located next to Dogtown. This building has been so many things, but this might be the most enjoyable iteration. There are 3-4 stairs to walk up to enter, and parking is in the Dogtown lot. It's a small and welcoming shop with lots of live plants, art on the walls, and a few small tables. I had a cappuccino ($4), the vegan breakfast sandwich ($7.50), and got a honey lavender scone ($4) to go. The cappuccino was delicious but small. I'm so American for this, but I need my morning coffee to be the size of my head. The vegan breakfast sandwich features tempeh bacon, a tofu "egg" patty, and a spicy sauce. I got it on a plain roll, but everything rolls are also available. The spiciness was just a touch hot for 7:45 am, but it was tasty. I had the scone later and it was great too - not dry and crumbly, flavorful but not overwhelming. I'll definitely be back to try other things! read more

Tempeh bacon wasn't bacon textured or flavored, even as tempeh--it was more of a lightly cooked medium-thick slab without any crisp, with a super sweet taste that put the whole thing off. As a part of my Rochester Coffee Crawl, I tried Hydra Coffee. I got the bananas foster latte (iced with almond milk) and it was really good! The merch and the vibes of this place is adorable. I loved the atmosphere and the fact that they had an upstairs area as well. I'm a sucker for cold foam and creative/artsy lattes but this latte was definitely doable! It was all of the requirements of what you need in an authentic latte. When I come back to Rochester I could definitely see myself coming back to get some coffee! Of course, I didn't leave without grabbing a gluten free strawberry jam bar (which was absolutely excellent) and a sweatshirt! The staff was so kind here as well and gave me great recommendations on what to get and what they like from the menu! read more

Sorry to say we didn't like this cute little coffee spot. They stop serving breakfast sandwiches on the weekend at 11 or 12 and then only have quiche, some pastries and a yogurt/granola option (that was decent.) Coffee was terrible. Bland, watered down, free hotel coffee. Partner and I were bummed. If you want good coffee, try local shops elsewhere. read more

Just opened on Monroe, owned by the same folks who own DogTown. The parking lot is the small lot shared by dog town. Staff was friendly. The decor is warm and inviting. This is our 3rd trip to Hydra Coffeehouse and it's so fresh and delicious every time. They have flavors that I've never seen before like rosemary brown sugar, blueberry tarragon, or maple sage. Today I got a grape pie iced latte and it was perfection. Nice strong coffee flavor. Make sure to ask for it in a to go cup if you're a leisurely sipper. The food rotates but there's always something delicious to choose from. Their hand pies are flaky and stuffed full. Today they had a choice of sausage gouda, or broccoli cheddar. I had the broccoli cheddar and I'll be dreaming about it all day. They had both sweet or savory scones, the maple walnut scone had a glaze on it and wasn't too dry like many scones I've had before. They also have cookies or brownies or some kind of treat to choose from. Many vegetarian or vegan options as well. I'll definitely be back, and I highly recommend Hydra. read more

I was super excited for Hydra to open just next to the Flower City Arts Center where I spend a lot of time taking classes and volunteering. Having a local (not chain) coffee shop, plus pastries/baked goods right next door has increased the diverse offerings on this section of Monroe Ave, and has finally given us a great option for a simple cup of coffee (long missing since Starbucks left years ago.) Hydra is run by the same amazing people who run Dog Town, Peg and Fran. Peg has some serious baking skills and each day produces a variety of savory options like scones, quiche and breakfast sandwiches, and a variety of sweets including many that are vegan and gluten free. Everything that I have tried (quiche, scones, cookies, mini cheesecakes, cake, etc) has been excellent. Of course, as a coffee shop they also have all your faves from drip to lattes and everything in between, and they also make several of their own flavored syrups which can be added to teas or coffees. What I love most about the menu is that there are signs hanging showing you exactly what each coffee (americano? cappuccino? latte? cortado? etc) is and how they are different, which makes it easier to order if you want to try something new or aren't sure what something is. They also have teas (including matcha and chai), hot cocoa, and Italian sodas. There's lots of seating inside, upstairs and down. Local artists grace the walls, along with a variety of plants which give a calming, welcoming, cozy vibe. AND, somewhat unbelievably since opening, their staff have managed the sometimes large crowds so that the coffees are served up efficiently without too much wait. At least I've been lucky and haven't have to wait too long, even when the line is out the door and there are people waiting inside. Cute, trendy coffee shop next to Dogtown in Rochester. Decided to check it out while we're in town. The decor here is great and the space is cozy. Menu is clear and all the food is displayed in a pastry case beside the register. We decided to try the matcha latte, cortado, espresso, and one of their hand pies. Overall we enjoyed it and the service was pretty friendly. I wish I had gotten a latte with one of the house-made syrups as the matcha latte hardly had enough matcha in it so it tasted mostly of oat milk. One of the newest coffeeshops in Rochester, Hydra has become my go-to spot for studying. They have delicious coffee, plenty of seating, great WiFi, awesome baristas, fast service, and good food/pastries. The coffeeshop has an upstairs seating area as well which is great if you want something a little quieter for studying with plenty of natural light. It does get a little packed at peak breakfast hours so you aren't always able to find a seat, but coffee and breakfast sandwiches are great. They usually have vegan options for baked goods/pastries to which is always cool. This is just what Monroe needed! We stopped in for coffee on a slow weekend. As soon as we walked in the door we saw happy plants and knew we were going to love this place. The menu has all the caffeinated standards with very inventive syrups and flavors. I got an iced latte with rosemary brown sugar syrup. It was delicious and refreshing. The upstairs was super cozy. As someone who works mainly out of coffeeshops and have been in hundreds of them across the United States, I initially really enjoyed this place. The menu was clearly labeled, they had vegan options, it looked very modern and clean. The aesthetic was honestly a perfect fit for me, ambiance included. Service was great, handle by a nice woman at the front who was obviously new, but was very friendly and accessible for us and had a refreshing, excited energy with how she was learning the system. We ordered two affogato shots, and waited for them to be made. While the woman consulted another woman to make these orders, an older man made appearance out of the kitchen and immediately started berating this woman! He said, "Oh no, you haven't been trained properly, now you've ruined it." She immediately responded with some agreement like, "Oh sorry, yes, I haven't been trained in this yet," and kept making the order. He then stood over her as she finished up the preparations adding in comments like. "Untrained, yeah, very untrained. That's too much ice cream. We'll have to teach you how later." He did not tell her to fix them or anything, and she served them to us. We quite enjoyed them, and thought there was nothing wrong with the way they were prepared. This was one of the most mind-blowingly inappropriate manager/employee interactions I've ever witnessed, and I dearly hope this toxic individual does not own this coffeehouse. If it was all a joke, it was a pathetic attempt, and joke or not, based on this experience alone, this man deserves to be in charge of absolutely no one. We will not be returning to this business because we take very seriously who we support. read more
