The fish and chips were pretty mediocre compared to others in Scotland. Noisy but that was fine.

The kitchen was knowledgeable and accommodating--no long explanation required, which is always a good sign. They also had a couple of gluten-free desserts available, which is a bonus worth mentioning. She had the burger, I had the fried chicken sandwich. Both were good. Nothing flashy about the place, but that's not what you're here for. Solid, straightforward lunch spot in Portree. Good for: quick lunch with friends Would return.

There are very few options for lunch in Portree apparently, and this is one of the places that was suggested by our Tour operator. It was a quaint little café, with a cute interior and a small, simple menu. My wife opted for the Fish and Chips, and I ordered a Cafe Smash Burger. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. I did enjoy the large strip of bacon in the burger. This is a Cafe where youplace your order and pay for your meal at a counter. The staff don't interact with us much but seemed nice enough. The glass display did have some treats that looked enticing, but we didn't try any of them. All in all, I don't think you have a lot of options for a meal when visiting Portree, so I would say this would probably be the best one to go to. They'll serve you a meal, and it should probably fill you up. But it's nothing special.

Poorly executed food and a clueless server had us just ready to get out the door by the time we were done. They do not take reservations, so we waited about an hour for what looked to be an attractive place with appealing dishes. Not so. Things started off ok with baked Camembert, as well as steamed mussels. Not bad. The main courses though were disastrous. A venison burger that was so dry it was hardly edible. Venison is of course very lean, and Caroy House did nothing to try to juice it up or preserve flavor. Just a very generous, double patty portion of super dry venison. The regular beef burger was about the same - very overcooked and without flavor. I had the flatiron steak, and it came with loads of mushrooms, sauce, salad and fries. I ordered the steak medium and it came out almost rare. I rarely (har har) send food back, but this was way under the desired temperature. The worst part was trying to get our waitress' attention, her waving us off (when we finally did get it), forgetting things, and then acting as if she hadn't really missed getting us what we needed. Plus an oh-so-long wait for everything. Poor service, poor execution. Bad food. Like I said, don't wait for it.

Ordered some Fish'n'Chips, fried shrimp, some soda and a few minutes later also grilled chicken breast (seen it on another table, looked good). Staff was very friendly, prices fair for a hotspot like this. The fries were alright...just about as in any regular Chippy shop. The fish though was really great. Firstly it was actually two very sizeable pieces. Very crispy, inside fresh, juicy and tender. As it should be. The fried shrimp were really wonderful. Again: tasted nice and fresh. Hot and crispy. The good looking chicken breast was actually very good. And not just a chicken breast - it was pretty much half of a chicken. Very nicely grilled with great flavours. We really had a great time here. Location is very convenient, not much of a view. But a cheerful atmosphere. Food was great as was the service. Prices fair. An enjoyable lunch.

The food and flavors are from the Highlands and Skye and I loved their placement, its a map of Skye and some of the food produced in that region. The chef is a young man and I saw him coming out of the the busy kitchen a couple times to take a break. He shook my hand when he asked what Whisky I was drinking and I told him a Gelnfidditch 18. The two problems with the restaurant were they had the heat turned on very high, it was uncomfortably hot and I would honestly rather have been cold. The other problem was they were very short staffed so the meal started out great but our server was invisible toward the end and we sat around for 20 minutes trying to see him so we could leave. Haggis + Paneer Pakora: Great Haggis fusion dish, felt traditional and yet paid homage to some of the new cultures that make up the UK. Slow Braised Lamb Shank: Rosemary Infused Mashed Potato and Roasted Root Vegetable. Very tender and delicious, our whole family shared this even though it started off as just my wifes dinner. Sole Veronique: Potatoes, spinach, and a cream sauce. Tasted OK but I thought the sauce was too heavy for the light fish it was on. If you go across the street from the restaurant and look down you can see the iconic row of different colored houses that a lot of people were taking pictures of.

Please book ahead and stop asking the waitress if they have a table while holding the door open - it was a cold and blustery summer evening and she didn't have time for those who can't read the sign which already said "Sorry the restaurant is full tonight!" There is just one waitress and I only saw 2 people working in the kitchen. It would take a while before she could come over to take the order and a while longer for the food to come. We both ordered the squat lobster as starters. It was similar to the crawfish tails but the meat was more tender and sweet. I ordered entree sized scallops that comes with a salad with crispy lardons and purée - they are only available as an appetizer on the menu but the waitress allowed me doubling the size as an entree. The scallops were so sweet and cooked to perfect perfection. It came with butternut squash puree (wished there was more) and crispy lardon, cubed butternut squash and capers salad - wished there were more betterment cubes and less capers as the later made it too salty). Wished I could gave them 4.5 starts! This is the quintessential Skye experience we aimed for! A small local restaurant with locally sourced seafood!
