We were able to find parking, use the facilities and take a spot. After a quick review of the menu and a short discussion the Scot made way to the counter and placed our orders. I got the soup (Stilton and broccoli - I now like that a lot) And he got a burger. We got our cans of coke, which tastes so much better there, and sat at our table. Not long after, our food was delivered. The soup in a large crock with a crusty roll and the burger looked delish. We were most certainly hungry too, since we ate with relish and rarely spoke. We opted to get dessert here, and chose the Sticky Toffee pudding.. It was good, but it tasted as though it had burnt a bit, not bad, but not the best, and it came with a melon ball scoop of ice cream.

(I'm a vegetarian) On this night it was a smoky bean casserole...I opted for the vegetarian burger, which came with tomato relish, Monterey Jack cheese, chips (a.k.a. fries) and a salad. It was basic but filled me up. The vegan patty on the burger was a good "meaty" style patty a-la Beyond or Impossible. (As opposed to a black bean or grain-based vegetable patty.) The cheese kind of disappeared into the burger when cooked. The fries were really good! This place was packed both times we were there...the second time, musicians were setting up in the pub area. (Though we were finished before they started.) They used to have a fried halloumi cheese on the menu which would have been akin to a sort of vegetarian version of fish and chips. Emailed them in advance and they said the chef would have been willing to make it for me if I'd wanted it. (Again I'm a vegetarian but the fish and chips I saw at another table looked really good.) We returned the following day for a proper dinner. This time we had a delicious meal, with good ale, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Everything was delicious. I think the atmosphere of this warm inn amidst the wild and roaring space deserves some merit as well. The establishment itself has this cozy, communal, and quite bustling atmosphere, which everyone seems to gravitate to in such a mystical and sleepy place. Outside, there's this beautiful, ancient, raw nature, that's so dormant and old, that feels so past civilization and humans, and then you enter this place and reacquaint yourself with people and interaction once again, in a communal, close-knit space. I loved it. I'd really recommend for anyone to just visit the area, walk around, feel its old, natural, and magnificent power, and then stop for a delicious and hearty meal here after. Our food arrived in about 15 minutes and included a small salad and two pieces of bread. I though my meal was excellent. It came hot and you could really taste the smoked haddock. My wife thought it had excellent flavor but would have liked more haddock. Still, she said the taste was very good. We hurried out because I was very concerned about negotiating the single track road and narrow bridges at night in the rain. We took it easy and made it back with no issues.
