A tiny piece of Scottish salmon
    Mama K.

We stopped here for lunch after riding the Jacobite train from Fort William to Mallaig. The Chlachain Inn is a short walk up a hill, but the food is very good. One member of our family chose the soup of the day (£4.95) and the Fisherman's Platter (£13.95). I had the Scottish Salmon (£14.95, which would be reasonable, except the piece of salmon was surprisingly small), and the other family member chose the Crofters Platter for £12.95. Add a Coke and one pint of local beer for each adult, and lunch cost £56 before the tip (£64 with tip). It was a very good lunch, although I was surprised and disappointed to get such a small piece of Scottish salmon at a restaurant on the Scottish coast. For an $80 lunch, it was overpriced.

Delicious! I had Cullen Slink, husband had hamburger and granddaughter had fresh Mallaig langoustine. My Cullen slink, smoked paddock, leeks, potatoes and double cream was wonderful. Hamburger was very good and so was langoustine. Waitresses were very sweet and helpful. Perfect lunch after Hogwarts Express (Jacobite Train) from Fort William to Mallaig

It was recommended to us by our B&B hostess for pub food, and what a choice it was! I was taken by the log fireplace, nice and cosy, great shelter from the windy and rainy weather outside. There were some tables outside, but wisely we skipped! The waitress/bar tender came to the table to take the order and when I asked her for an ale recommendation, she mentioned one from Isle of Skye which I hadn't tried before, and she went straight on to the bar to bring a taster!!! How kind of her!! Both me and my mother tried the Mallaig beer battered haddock with delicious chips and their own home-made tartar sauce... I was meant to try their Sticky toffee pudding too, but no space for that!!! (well, we did have some salad too, but we were so hungry after the train journey from Edinburgh to Mallaig)! Give it a try if you're up there, not that many options in wee Mallaig!

Seafood Chowder. Mussels, shrimps and lots more :)

One of the best meals we had in Scotland! An unexpected find. Mussels were great as were the salmon stew and fish chowder.

Amazing and delicious food. Loved the Halloumi burger with veggi patty, Goat cheese and dessert of the banoffee pie.

When in need of a quick pint and fish & chips this place is a great stop with public parking just up the hill.

I have to believe that the only reason this place is still in business is because there are enough…read moretourists that will eat here when there is literally nowhere else to go. Six items were on the menu: a soup of the day (rice and chicken) with bread, a ham and cheese sandwich, a chicken/bacon/sweetcorn sandwich (check the TripAdviser reviews if you want to hear more about that one), a vegan cheese and pickle sandwich, a pulled pork wrap, and a falafel/mango chutney wrap. Five pages of the six-page menu were drinks, coffee, and alcohol. This is not a food place. It looks like one. Based on old reviews and photos, maybe it used to be one. I did come in the afternoon, so maybe it's better for breakfast. Or maybe not. For the amount and quality of sandwich I got for 5 quid, I should have just gotten a meal deal at the co-op. Genuinely, a meal deal sandwich would have been better quality. My ham and cheese did have both ingredients, but the cheese was shredded and the ham was very thin-sliced and overwhelmed by the cheese. My guess is that it's made to be toasted, hence the shredded cheese, and that was an option for 20 pence-- but why on God's green Earth would you serve a cold sandwich with shredded cheese? The bread was bland and basic-- fine if you're making yourself something at home, but not something worth paying for at all. (Again, it was like a meal deal sandwich. But worse. I would never disrespect a meal deal sandwich like this.) Based on the service (or lack thereof) we received from the very beginning, I should have listened to my intuition and gotten up to find somewhere better. The wait staff are called that, I assume, because they will wait ten minutes for you to ask them if they can take your order, only to be repeatedly rude to you when you politely ask for the bare minimum amount of service. Full disclosure: I have worked in food service before. I sympathize with anyone who has to deal with customers. But when we weren't served, and went up to ask if our order could be taken, we were snapped at and told to go back to our table. No "apologies, someone will be there shortly". Not even a "sorry for the wait, we're very busy right now". Just "go back to your table". So we did. Which was a huge mistake. I've lived in Scotland for more than a year and I don't know if I've ever had a meal that depressing since living here. And I've made Pasta in Sauce at 3am with just water because I ran out of milk. I won't be too hard on our table's waiter because he was very young and inexperienced, and I expect he's received minimal, if any, training on how to wait tables. I honestly felt bad for him. He looked as though he would rather be anywhere else. In that way I felt a real connection to the wait staff; in fact, it was the only time I actually felt truly seen by them. I, too, would rather have been anywhere else. But that's not necessarily the vibe you want to be getting when you walk into a place. This place would be better off selling ready-made, takeaway sandwiches rather than masquerading as a restaurant and disappointing us at every turn. Seriously. Not to quote other media in a literal Yelp review, but my expectations were low and I was still let down. The only saving grace of this place was that it was clean and had wifi that was strong enough for me to send this picture of my sandwich to my friends and go "????????". Also there were two very cute dogs outside, although I don't believe they were hired by the restaurant. If you're desperate for food and don't really mind what you're spending money on, then this place is fine. Like I said, at least it's clean and has decent wifi. But I would not waste my time here twice.

Their hours have changed, and do not open for breakfast until between 9-9:30, which can be too late for anyone trying to catch a bus or a tour from the square. We had lunch at The Granary, which was just OK. What we really enjoyed was having a mid-afternoon snack (afternoon tea), as they serve excellent coffee and tea drinks. The cappuccino and chai tea lattes were very good. They have a special drink on the menu that was absolutely decadent- the Hot Chocolate Royale! A case of pies, cakes, and treats is made fresh daily to tempt you, and everything is really good. The only tricky thing is the QR codes are used to place your own order, but if your phone gets poor service, you will have to order at the counter and tell them your table number. No-one told us this, and we had waited for quite a while until we figured it out, as the table service is minimal.

Poorly executed food and a clueless server had us just ready to get out the door by the time we were done. They do not take reservations, so we waited about an hour for what looked to be an attractive place with appealing dishes. Not so. Things started off ok with baked Camembert, as well as steamed mussels. Not bad. The main courses though were disastrous. A venison burger that was so dry it was hardly edible. Venison is of course very lean, and Caroy House did nothing to try to juice it up or preserve flavor. Just a very generous, double patty portion of super dry venison. The regular beef burger was about the same - very overcooked and without flavor. I had the flatiron steak, and it came with loads of mushrooms, sauce, salad and fries. I ordered the steak medium and it came out almost rare. I rarely (har har) send food back, but this was way under the desired temperature. The worst part was trying to get our waitress' attention, her waving us off (when we finally did get it), forgetting things, and then acting as if she hadn't really missed getting us what we needed. Plus an oh-so-long wait for everything. Poor service, poor execution. Bad food. Like I said, don't wait for it.
