Venison
Steven W.

A small location that serves up delicious meals. There is a small menu to choose from: 3 starters/menus and desserts. The food is great and packed full of flavour. We had the venison starter which was delicious. Moving onto the lamb and cod & scallops which did not disappoint. The dessert ended it off very nicely. The one thing that did disappoint a bit was the service. This restaurant is on the Michelin guide for 2019 and is fine dining but they didn't know who ordered what, when the food arrived at the table. A little slow when we wanted to order dessert and lacked the cherry on the top for a restaurant on the Michelin guide. Great food and you should definitely check it out for yourself. A great option for Portree.

Duck with mushrooms & crushed potatoes.

Exceptional. Tiny 9 table family run restaurant with a deserved reputation for being the best in Portree with excellent service to boot. Seared salmon, cucumber & grapefruit starter was delicately cooked and came together well. Scallop mousse was similarly impressive. Can't comment on the oysters I didn't try. The hake main was perfectly cooked and well complimented with a tasty ratatouille. The duck was excellent, though the dish made a touch heavy by a lot of crushed potatoes, and it seems potatoes aren't Skye's strongest suit. The raspberry mille feuille desert was beautiful, and tasted as good as it looked. £100 for 3 starters, 3 mains and a desert. Wines were inexpensive - two glasses and a beer added just £16 to the bill.

Service not the best (for such a top establishment). Not attentive. Even worse, no apologies when there was plastic in the dish! That is a major fail to be honest. Waiter said he'd talk to kitchen and never came back. When the bill came we had to tell this different waiter about the whole episode. Again no apology but when she came back with a revised bill she quietly took the charge off (so that dish was free). Fine but why such bad handling of this whole incident?

Emma was our server and was warm; delightful and very helpful with my gluten allergy; and Rebecca, the manager, was lovely, and helped us earlier in the day to arrange transport from Sconser. For the meal .... Well! We started with the crab, which was flavorful and very fresh. My husband saw the table next to us served the Curried Cauliflower soup, and had to try it. Super!! The entrees were exceptional; I had a lovely, thick piece of cod, with a beautiful butter and lemon sauce with grape tomatoes, and they subbed out a stacked potato dish, due to my gluten allergy, and it was delicious. My husband had the scallops with pork belly, and while both were fantastic, the pork belly was truly amazing. We also had a side of the seasonal vegetables, which were crisp and very fresh. If you are on Skye, don't miss The View!

Please book ahead and stop asking the waitress if they have a table while holding the door open - it was a cold and blustery summer evening and she didn't have time for those who can't read the sign which already said "Sorry the restaurant is full tonight!" There is just one waitress and I only saw 2 people working in the kitchen. It would take a while before she could come over to take the order and a while longer for the food to come. We both ordered the squat lobster as starters. It was similar to the crawfish tails but the meat was more tender and sweet. I ordered entree sized scallops that comes with a salad with crispy lardons and purée - they are only available as an appetizer on the menu but the waitress allowed me doubling the size as an entree. The scallops were so sweet and cooked to perfect perfection. It came with butternut squash puree (wished there was more) and crispy lardon, cubed butternut squash and capers salad - wished there were more betterment cubes and less capers as the later made it too salty). Wished I could gave them 4.5 starts! This is the quintessential Skye experience we aimed for! A small local restaurant with locally sourced seafood!

The hotel staff was lovely and helpful. We were smart enough to have made a dinner reservation before our arrival for our one night stay. Nice pubby dark wood décor and seating spread over a couple of rooms. Many tables occupied on our visit. Dinner menu Scottish leaning as to be expected. It was clear from the outset that they were low on staff with our (very young) server and water coming a good bit after seating. My partner was not real hungry this evening so chose to do a bowl of the soup the day-potato & leek. This came with a wonderful, fresh roll. The roll was pronounced fantastic. We have enjoyed many an excellent bread item in Scotland and this was another example here. They know what they're doing. The soup was very tasty but after a few spoonfulls, it became "boring". My choice was a Filet of Scottish Sea Trout (yes it is different from Salmon, Google it). Served with roasted new potatoes, braised leeks, herb crusted baby carrots, and smoked mussel butter sauce. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, as were the leeks. The carrots were interesting with the herb "crust", and the mussel sauce added an umami depth to the fish. Interestingly, the sauce included a few nicely cooked, out of the shell, mussels. A succulent addition. Loved every bite. For dessert, we chose a Cinnamon Apple Tart with Caramel Whipped Cream and Vanilla Ice Cream. All of this came together for a scrumptious finale to our meal. Especially the whipped cream. Perfect portion size also. Different planning could have put us here for a longer period of time and it would have been wonderful. If you are traveling in this area, try to either stay or eat here. You won't regret it. Highly recommended.
