    Salmon pie special
    Edward W.

Tried coming for breakfast one day but they were open at 7AM like advertised. We came for lunch and it was open! We had seats overlooking the harbor which was nice. Limited number of items on the menu itself. English breakfast plus a bunch of different specials on the wall. Ordered the English breakfast and it came with lots of variety: beans, black sausage, egg, roast tomato, bacon, Scottish sausage, potato scone, mushroom. Potato scone was fried and very hard. Egg yolk so yellow. Black sausage was tasty. Loved everything about this style of breakfast. Lots of protein and fats makes for a very hearty meal perfect for refueling. Also ordered a salmon pie that comes with a side of mixed greens and a lot of rice. This dish was very average and lacked flavor. Pay at the bar once you're done.

The decor here is super cute! I love the window seats here! :] Great service, delicious food, convenient location, and free wifi here! What more could you ask for? ;P We came here twice for breakfast during our time in Skye, partly because it was one of the only places near us that was open early, but also because of he aforementioned tasty food and good service. The breakfast tea here is super good and comes in the cutest tea sets ever. The scones are also really tasty (I'm going to miss the scones here so much when I'm back in the states!)--they had blackberry apple the day that we ordered those! The Belgian waffle special here is really good! They've made it with honey, berries & bananas and another variation came with berries, oranges, apples, cranberries and maple syrup! We've also had the breakfast roll, which we originally thought came in a tortilla because, well, we're from California (haha), but in fact is actually a roll as in bread (basically like a sandwich!) and I've also had the smoked salmon wrap special. Food has been consistently delicious! The only thing I'd wish for would be somewhat cheaper prices, but since we're on vacation, it's cool. The bathrooms here are unisex and very unique. Very clean and fun decor though! :p Minimum of £10 for card!

    Pure delight.

Better than four stars. The menu is little and very well done. We came for lunch and loved it so much we came back for breakfast. Both were five star. Unique, very well executed meals. The soup of the day was sweet potato. We couldn't get enough. We actually ordered the soup again for breakfast at 9am and they said they had some left--even better than the lunch the day before. * * * * * My boys got the lentil soup and devoured it. It was simple. Just a basic, nice lentil soup. The veggie breakfast was wonderful. Great sausage and amazing beans. Doing the simple things well makes a place. The service was great too. Really peaceful happy bunch. As an American, the hot chocolate needed a lump or two of sugar for me.

Overall a really nice café with a little bit of a vibe, but not anything special. After reading the tip about Café Arriba in Lonely Planet, maybe my expectations was just a little bit high... They do open already at 7am, so a perfect place to get a breakfast before heading out on a hike or catching a bus. Menu and drinks are a bit limited in terms of selection (no juice/smoothies) but you can get a bagel or traditional English breakfast for a hearty start of the day.

Get a window table and enjoy the view.

Central and easy to find near the harbour in Portree this cafe has a great menu and even better views. We arrived for a late lunch and it was full but the staff were friendly and it was only a 5 minute wait for a table. The menu is on blackboards on the walls and is a good selection of soup, sandwiches, pasta, nachos and specials. They also do a wide range of tea, coffee and alcoholic drinks, including local beers. The service was efficient without feeling rushed especially as the food was cooked to order. Both pasta dishes that we had were tasty and quite large portions.

Not bad. The coffee sizes are so small - maybe I'm just being American. Cute place that overlooks the water.

Mackenzie's Bakery - Sausage pasty, didn't taste that great

I didn't have high expectations for the almond sponge but it was quite good. The chocolate sponge was my least favorite but had exceptional frosting and was topped with chocolate shavings. One bite and I knew they were abnormally good, when I went back inside the cozy interior to take photos I noticed all the awards and plaques they have along the back wall. This is an odd gauge but both days there was a large amount of French and Italian tourists eating here and my stereotype is they are super picky about bread and pastries so I knew it was good. There was a constant line of people but they were quick in grabbing and heating the pastries and making coffee. Our favorite was the bacon and cheese turnover. Had it both days and delicious both times with a nice crunchy and flaky crust and quality bacon and cheese used. We did not repeat the sausage pasty because it tasted under seasoned. They have a "spicy chicken" turnover that had sugar added to the hot sauce to soften the heat, I would call it very mild so don't be scared to order it if you can't eat spicy. This may not be appealing but both days the bags they gave use the pastries in immediately started showing oil stains from the butter they used. The portion sizes are great so I didn't feel too stuffed after eating one of these for breakfast.

I have to believe that the only reason this place is still in business is because there are enough…read moretourists that will eat here when there is literally nowhere else to go. Six items were on the menu: a soup of the day (rice and chicken) with bread, a ham and cheese sandwich, a chicken/bacon/sweetcorn sandwich (check the TripAdviser reviews if you want to hear more about that one), a vegan cheese and pickle sandwich, a pulled pork wrap, and a falafel/mango chutney wrap. Five pages of the six-page menu were drinks, coffee, and alcohol. This is not a food place. It looks like one. Based on old reviews and photos, maybe it used to be one. I did come in the afternoon, so maybe it's better for breakfast. Or maybe not. For the amount and quality of sandwich I got for 5 quid, I should have just gotten a meal deal at the co-op. Genuinely, a meal deal sandwich would have been better quality. My ham and cheese did have both ingredients, but the cheese was shredded and the ham was very thin-sliced and overwhelmed by the cheese. My guess is that it's made to be toasted, hence the shredded cheese, and that was an option for 20 pence-- but why on God's green Earth would you serve a cold sandwich with shredded cheese? The bread was bland and basic-- fine if you're making yourself something at home, but not something worth paying for at all. (Again, it was like a meal deal sandwich. But worse. I would never disrespect a meal deal sandwich like this.) Based on the service (or lack thereof) we received from the very beginning, I should have listened to my intuition and gotten up to find somewhere better. The wait staff are called that, I assume, because they will wait ten minutes for you to ask them if they can take your order, only to be repeatedly rude to you when you politely ask for the bare minimum amount of service. Full disclosure: I have worked in food service before. I sympathize with anyone who has to deal with customers. But when we weren't served, and went up to ask if our order could be taken, we were snapped at and told to go back to our table. No "apologies, someone will be there shortly". Not even a "sorry for the wait, we're very busy right now". Just "go back to your table". So we did. Which was a huge mistake. I've lived in Scotland for more than a year and I don't know if I've ever had a meal that depressing since living here. And I've made Pasta in Sauce at 3am with just water because I ran out of milk. I won't be too hard on our table's waiter because he was very young and inexperienced, and I expect he's received minimal, if any, training on how to wait tables. I honestly felt bad for him. He looked as though he would rather be anywhere else. In that way I felt a real connection to the wait staff; in fact, it was the only time I actually felt truly seen by them. I, too, would rather have been anywhere else. But that's not necessarily the vibe you want to be getting when you walk into a place. This place would be better off selling ready-made, takeaway sandwiches rather than masquerading as a restaurant and disappointing us at every turn. Seriously. Not to quote other media in a literal Yelp review, but my expectations were low and I was still let down. The only saving grace of this place was that it was clean and had wifi that was strong enough for me to send this picture of my sandwich to my friends and go "????????". Also there were two very cute dogs outside, although I don't believe they were hired by the restaurant. If you're desperate for food and don't really mind what you're spending money on, then this place is fine. Like I said, at least it's clean and has decent wifi. But I would not waste my time here twice.

Fine. No problem. We settled in and ordered. Then a girl that seemed to have an inflated sense of self importance came over and insisted that we pack up and move to a newly opened 2-top. I found it very unsettling. If a party of 6 were to come looking for a table they surely would have understood, due to their party size, that they would need to wait 10-15 minutes. Sure enough, 2 different 6-tops opened within 10 minutes after we moved to our new seat. There was no need to treat us so rudely.

Once you got your food (outside) you can sit down right in front or head around the corner to the big table with some views. We were happy to sit out front though. Ordered two kinds of cooked topped oysters (salmon/seaweed and spicy seaweed chutney), crab legs, a softshell crab and half-a-dozen of regular oysters. The fresh raw oysters were nice and of good quality. The cooked oysters were decent, maybe easier for oyster-beginners since the toppings cover the sea/oyster flavour. The softshell crab was really tasty - but also a bit pricey for our served size. The best item were the crab legs cluster. A good load of legs for little money. Very tasty! All in all a good place to enjoy some seafood. Some items were great, others also very good - but not great. If we come back it would be for the Crab legs...
