As bakeries in touristy spots go, Mackenzie's is worth a trip. The tasty jammy dodger works as a snack AND a souvenir since it's shaped like the Isle of Skye. I didn't have high expectations for the almond sponge but it was quite good. The chocolate sponge was my least favorite but had exceptional frosting and was topped with chocolate shavings. The highlight of our bakery pillage? The excellent brownie. The strawberry tart looked good and I had some regrets not getting it. Everything was fairly priced. read more

This was our favorite place to eat in Portree, we ended up getting breakfast here both days we stayed. One bite and I knew they were abnormally good, when I went back inside the cozy interior to take photos I noticed all the awards and plaques they have along the back wall. This is an odd gauge but both days there was a large amount of French and Italian tourists eating here and my stereotype is they are super picky about bread and pastries so I knew it was good. There was a constant line of people but they were quick in grabbing and heating the pastries and making coffee. Our favorite was the bacon and cheese turnover. Had it both days and delicious both times with a nice crunchy and flaky crust and quality bacon and cheese used. We did not repeat the sausage pasty because it tasted under seasoned. They have a "spicy chicken" turnover that had sugar added to the hot sauce to soften the heat, I would call it very mild so don't be scared to order it if you can't eat spicy. This may not be appealing but both days the bags they gave use the pastries in immediately started showing oil stains from the butter they used. The portion sizes are great so I didn't feel too stuffed after eating one of these for breakfast. read more

Unfortunately I have no pictures...but you will have to just trust me that this bakery has some of the best lunch sandwiches I've ever had. We ordered a Mexican chicken cold roll and an egg mayo cold roll with a cup of broccoli/cauliflower soup. Wrapped it up with an apple turnover and brownie with a latte. THE best 17 pounds we have spent in Scotland. We arrived around 1p and there was a line in this quaint bakery but the service was fairly speedy. It is a cold rainy day so we opted to sit in our rental car to eat our lunch vs eating outside on the bakery's picnic tables. Overall a great experience! read more

Great little bakery in the Portree Square across from the bus stops. Opens between 9-9:30, so a quick stop to grab goodies before you head out for the day. They have plenty of choices between sweet (doughnuts, tarts, award winning scones) to savory (many types of meat/sausage rolls), all made fresh. The line is long as soon as they open, but the wonderful smells have you anticipating your turn. There is no inside seating, but there are picnic tables outside available for the hearty souls. They're very friendly and the baked goods look impressive. We each got a bacon and cheese roll and the bread was incredible, but it was very salty. I tried a scone as well, and it was kind of hard, but tasted good. My boyfriend got a custard filled donut and enjoyed it. Worth checking out if you're in the area and looking for a bakery. read more

Great prices. Amazing looking treats in the glass. I wound up getting a donut even though I don't like donuts and it was amazing. I ate the whole thing and didn't share. The sandwiches were perfect for lunch. I had pickle and cheese. I think my husband had the same. And our lunch with drinks sandwiches and treats was about 15 pounds. read more

Stopped by on a bus tour and this was my first stop. Our guide told us it was good, but he did not tell us it was EXCEPTIONAL!!! We tried the raspberry tart, a butterscotch donut, and a cold roll. The donut was literally the best I've ever had, and I love donuts! The tart was delicious and the cold roll was a full on sandwich with tasty meat and a variety of fresh veggies. There was a take away counter to the left and a nice sit down area to the right. They also had an outdoor seating area if needed. Service was quick and friendly as well! read more

Mackenzie's Bakery is a fantastic bake shop in Portree. It's simple and no-frills with no dine-in tables. But you can order cheap and delicious freshly baked goods at the counter. The sausage roll was satisfying, and the empire biscuit was tasty, too. Overall worth a stop for some treats. read more

I'm sad that I discovered this bakery on our very last day in Skye--we'd actually just finished breakfast over at Cafe Arribe. Had I known about this place's existence, we could've had awesome and inexpensive snacks for our trip the day before! This bakery opens early so if you're going on a day tour, there's plenty of time for you to come here to stock up on snacks beforehand--it'll save you a bunch of money and give you more time to explore! Oh, hindsight. In any case, this bakery is amazing. It's located right next to The Granary. They have so, so many delicious goodies, and there's something for everyone! Sandwiches, cakes, cookies, meat pies, scones... If I'd been able to stay longer in the area, I likely would've come here for snacks before going on hiking adventures and picnics and the like. This nice little bakery is located in the main part of town. It's right across the police station at the City centre's main square and next to The Granary restaurant (which is pretty good restaurant too). They serve all kinds of sandwich rolls at reasonable price (my tourist lingo: cheap eats!). I also tried the meat pie which was decent. I was on the minibus tour trip and many of my fellow travelers (especially the budget-conscious ones) like them too. Tips: The store opens early and you can stock up on food if you are on a day trip to Skye to save time (There are SO MANY PLACES you can go in Skye). A 45-min lunch break doesn't sound like much, you may wonder. But you will thank me later when you see how beautiful that island is and want to spend as much time as possible to enjoy the natural beauty of Skye, as I did, rather than finding a side cafe for some food. Side-notes: This place does take credit card but not American Express. I find my AmEx is like dead money in Skye. Also, the accent is a "wee-bit" strong in the cafe for my American ear, but the ladies are very kind and will repeat/explain themselves. Just a friendly place. read more

There are no words to express how happy this bakery makes me. Even the thought of MacKenzie's makes me smile. Don't let the absurdly long queues put you offthose people are willing to queue for a reason: MacKenzie's is God's gift to the people of and visitors to Portree (right after He gave them beautiful surroundings, that is--MacKenzie's was second). In case you don't know, Portree is a charming little town that lies roughly halfway up the Trotternish peninsula on the magical Isle of Skye. It serves as a trade hub for the local population, and a perfect leg-stretch pit-stop on your way around Skye. I'm not sure, but I think MacKenzie's bakery was discovered first, and the town grew up around it. Like a baked-goods gold mine. Okay, seriously, this bakery is amazingyou and a friend can stand at the counter, goggling the array of goodies before you, and play a long game of I'll have one of those, and one of those, and ooh! Three of those!..., also grab sandwiches for a later picnic lunch, drinks, coffees, and still pay around 5 pounds for the lot. Rapture!! The quality of the food is also greatI'm a big fan of the strawberry tarts, while my friends oohed over the variety of breads and danishes and cookies (biscuits).
