156 Cumberland was in the Micheline Guide's recommended restaurant list when we visited, so our expectations were quite high, which likely affected our overall experience. The restaurant exterior is quite unassuming so you may miss it when walking along the street. The interior is modern and aesthetic. Our servers were friendly and efficient. We appreciated that our server let us know to let them know when we were done with our bone-in short rib so it could be sent down to the kitchen for a second cut which yielded quite a bit more near. I really enjoyed the beef tartare - it was unique and well-executed. The other dishes were all okay but didn't stand out. Keep in mind when ordering that all the dishes are quite small! Luckily, our main, the bone-in short rib, did not disappoint and it definitely was the best part of the meal. Overall, most of the dishes were slightly underwhelming for the price range. If you don't mind paying a bit extra, the food isn't bad, but didn't quite meet our expectations.

Elevated Korean food coming with a more elegant ambiance. Small restaurant in Yorkville. Menu items are interesting and definitely flavourful, we almost scraped all the sauce with our utensils. All our dishes were delicious and the dessert was a good fusion. I enjoyed the drinks because they were an asian twist on classics and had a good amount of alcohol. service was prompt and attentive too

Came here for a case team dinner and was pleasantly surprised! The Korean fusion food has great flavours (very rich and vibrant) - my only complaint is that the plates are quite small. We started off with a few small plates - the gem lettuce salad, mul-hwe, and the chicken wings. The gem lettuce was their take on the Caesar salad - super creamy and cheesy, but with the addition of candied walnuts and oranges. It was one of the more delicious salads I've had in a while! The mul-hwe was decent; the gochujang added a nice spicy kick while the radishes and kiwis provided a sweet relief. That said, it wasn't my favourite. The chicken wings reminded me of the Chinese ones stuffed with glutinous rice. They were, no doubt, laborious to make since the main part of the wing was deboned. I wasn't a huge fan of the stuffing - it was too crunchy and sweet for my tastes. For the middle plate, we got the mushroom jook. This was their take on "congee" but was more similar to a risotto. The flavours were absolutely amazing! It was cheesy but homely all at once. Would definitely get again! We also ordered the striploin ssam, and, in addition to the lovely sides, we also got one portion of the white kimchi. The kimchi was so good! Light and tangy. The sides also helped a lot with the ssam flavours - loved the spicy and vinegary mix! We were still hungry after so added two more small plates - the potato pancake and the stuffed pepper. I didn't try the latter, but the former reminded me a lot of hash browns... but with the kicker that there were mussels inside. Was really a nice profile - next time, I'd prefer to get this instead of the mul-hwe. Finally, we wrapped up with dessert. The cornpop bingsoo was a fan favourite - something about the snowy white ice and the brown butter crumble just made it light and delicious. The banana milk tiramisu was good, tasted exactly like banana milk. The drinks here are great as well - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Service is friendly and fast. Would definitely recommend to come again!

Upon entering, the interior is beautiful with light pink walls accented with emerald green decor. The dining area is dimly lit and there are candles at each table for mood lighting. The ceilings have glistening lights that resemble stars and add a dreamy romantic feel to the restaurant. Our server was quick and helpful throughout the meal. We had the Beef Tartare and Korean Saam Platter with hanger steak and added a side of seaweed rice. The tartare is a take on yubu which is a Korean fried tofu pocket (sweet) stuffed with different fillings. The meat was cut nicely and had a good chew to it so you could taste the meaty flavour. The gochujang marinade was delicious and had just the right amount of kick. On top is an egg yolk jam with chives and crispy shallots which add a crunch to it. For the Hanger Steak, the set came with lettuce, house pickles, cucumber kimchi, a scallion salad, and an assortment of sauces. We asked for the steak to be rare and it came out beautifully. The meat was so tender, and paired with the mugwort butter rub, it was one of the best steaks I've had in the city. My partner enjoyed the lettuce wraps, while I preferred to pair the meat with the rice so that the seaweed added an extra layer of umami to it. The chimichuri and house-made coconut ssamjang were our favourite sauces. It also came with a wasabi aioli but neither of us are a fan of wasabi. The drinks looked delicious as well, though we opted out as we had a reservation at a cocktail bar after. Would love to return and try more from their menu in the future.

The beef tartare ($15) are flavourful bundles of joy - for your mouth that is. Sweet, savoury, and spicy elements combine with the minced beef before being stuffed into fried tofu skin. An egg yolk drizzle adds a thick creamy element while the chives a burst of freshness. If the avocado mousse wasn't so over salted the hiramasa ($25) would have been perfect. A generous portion of yellowtail incorporated a hint of heat from white kimchi gel and horseradish along with briny bits of oiji (a Korean pickle). While the avocado helps bind everything together, it was overly seasoned, so I ended up scraping most of it off to allow me to taste the fish. The little toasted seaweed chips were a great choice to scoop this up. The intensely flavoured appetizers did leave the Korean bouillabaisse ($34) tasting flat. Perhaps it's why the kitchen chose to serve the bouillabaisse with the white kimchi on the side. Ultimately, it lacked the saffron hit that makes the seafood sing. At least there was a decent number of clams, bay scallops, and haddock and the thin circles of rice cake were an interesting chewy texture against the seafood. The #AvecJayden's white kimchi ($8) supports a fellow chef - the sous chef of Richmond Station who began perfecting his recipe during the pandemic and later starting an enterprise to sell it. Given it doesn't rely heavily on spicy gochujang, Jayden's version is light and fresh so didn't detract from the seafood. Give me an entire dish of sujebi ($37), the slices of silky Korean pasta swimming in a decadent buttery sauce. Chunks of duck leg, meaty maitake mushrooms, sweet corn, and fried sage made this the highlight of the meal. There wasn't an ounce of fruit in the banana milk tiramisu ($13), but I don't mind. My best guess as to where the banana was incorporated may be the cake. Regardless, the dessert satisfied and aptly fit the menu's description as being not too sweet. The kitchen's efficiency seemed to put a strain on the front-of-the-house. Even though service was friendly, they were so busy running food and drinks that switching plates became an after thought. A new plate would be ideal between the starters and the bouillabaisse, at least we managed to get one for the sujebi after waiting a bit. Dinner also seemed rushed with little time between dishes. I didn't feel like I could really settle in and relax without letting the mains go cold.

Was excited for this place based on the very high reviews both here and on Google. Felt it definitely could have been better, especially for the price you pay here. Ambiance was great and service is also very attentive. However the food, just doesn't hit. KOrdered the Potato Pancake (16), Korean Bouillabaisse (34) and Mushroom Jook (28). Potato pancake was probably my personal favorite with a good amount of mussels and pretty good tasting. I really wish this was larger for $16 but it was just 2 small slices. It was delicious but portion is not there. Korean Bouillabaisse was ok at best. The good part here is the haddock but the clams had that crunchy sand taste. Scallops were extremely small, barely noticeable honestly. Mushroom jook was decent taste wise, lots of mushrooms and rice cakes but that was about it. For a korean fusion I expected a bit more flair here. Portions for both the Bouillabaisse and mushroom jook were quite small again, for the price. Portions are really lacking, taste is decent, really can't give anything more than 2 stars.

Amazing dinner! We started with the oysters, chicken wings and beef tartare. Highly recommend the chicken wings and beef tartare, the oysters were also good but I think they were more similar to oysters you can find elsewhere. For the mid, we got the pork belly and sujebi. Both were great, the pork belly was very tender and the sujebi had a nice combination of flavours. For the ssam we got the bone in short rib. Highly highly highly recommend, it was extremely tender. Service was good, there was a slight delay after our appetizers but I think the kitchen was very busy. The restaurant had a nice ambiance, perfect for date night or a birthday dinner.

This little place in yorkville is solid from beginning to end. I truly have only to recommend this place and just try it. The customer service guides you easily and friendly to choose dishes. I highly recommend sharing. I didn't have a bad dish. The definite standout like everyone else was saying was the beef tartare. An absolute must! At the time, the only thing I thought they could improve on was the washroom. Was a bit disappointing considering how on point everything else was.

4.5/5 Very good Korean fusion restaurant. - Beef Tartare with crispy shallot or garlic? With gojuchang sauce, stuffed inside inaru tofu skin. So so good - Sujebi: great dish. Not too salty, noodles were chewy because of the potato starch. - Trout roe dip: quite sour for my liking - Scallop: good but again, a little too sour - Banana tiramisu: they used the Korean banana milk in this dessert. Very good!

OK... my last review of the year and it's a good one! I had a couple of other ones I wanted to write up but I didn't want to leave '22 on a sour note. I wanted to leave this year on a HIGH! And nothing gets better than 156 Cumberland! Been here a couple of times. Hmmm... when? BM and AM. That's Before Michelin and After Michelin Guides Recommended restaurant nod. Not all Michelin Star or Recommended Places are snobby, high priced establishments. AND not all places in Yorkville have to be exclusive, expensive, and elitist. Welcome to 156 Cumberland. This down to earth, modestly decorated spot is where you go when you don't want the same old thing. For Koreans like me, I don't go out for Korean Food unless someone wants to go and makes demands or bribes ... LOL... because I'm kind of saturated with the food of my people. So when a restaurant takes Korean classics and infuses French cuisines for multicultural Toronto Denizens, I must go!!! The menu here is imaginative and very comforting. Korean food has always been a warm comforting hug on a cold Canada night, and they don't lose that here at 156 Cumberland. The food here is created by Chef MJ - the master of the back of the house! AND his charming wife, Jenny, is the manager - mistress of the front of the house. What a lovely couple and how they make magic here is awesome. MJ creates and Jenny makes sure the staff provides exemplary service to their voraciously hungry, but patient with outside calm demeanour, diners. I on the other hand was out of control as usual... HeHeHe... ! I'm sure everyone has had a look at their website and probably skimmed through the menu and had a heart stopping, stomach growling moment on the Braised Short Rib. Let me tell you, I completely forgot about any of the other dishes when this came out. The presentation, the aroma, the cook, the side dishes, the... yes.. I can go on and on... but I won't! I'll just say that it is THE MUST TRY DISH of the YEAR! And since the year has come to an end, it should be your MUST TRY of 2023! I can go into great length how perfectly seasoned with hints of Korean bbq galbi marinade. I could tell you how amazingly tender and juicy each segment was. How each morsel was umami taste explosion. BUT I won't... oops sorry! How about you just go and give it a try yourself. The price for such an amazing meal, with the location, and the Michelin Recommendation, is more than reasonable. Many of my friends have gone and some have gone again already. What are you waiting for? This Korean give this Korean inspired place 5 Kimchi Stars - LOL!!!! Happy New Years! Party like it's the last day of the year (and it is) but stay safe! All the best for 2023! CHEERS!!!!

Elegant, Korean restaurant with modern twists on classics. Service was 10/10 - our hostess was polite, attentive, and promptly served us. In terms of dishes, here's the ratings: Potato Pancake - 3.75/5: The potato pancake itself was amazingly crispy and delicious. However, the spicy mayo on top overwhelmed most other flavors. Beef Tartare - 5/5: Uniquely served as an Inari, this was the best dish of the night. The Beef Tartare was seasoned nicely and there was a generous amount of greens on top, giving the entire dish a light, clean taste. You could easily eat 2 or more plates of these. Mackerel - 3.5/5: The veggies on top did a good job cutting some fattiness of the mackerel, but overall this dish is too heavy. After a few bites you get tired of it. Drinks were superb! We opted for their fruity drinks - refreshing & delicious. Overall, a very solid experience. The creativity of the menu and wonderful service are plenty enough reason to come back.

This 156 Cumberland is a restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide. You definitely should put this place on the very top of restaurants to try!! Known for modern Korean with a French twist. The dishes are beautiful and the flavours are irresistible and unique! The restaurant is chic and feminine with gorgeous chandeliers. My favourite appetizer has to be the Beef Tartare and love the twist with Gochujang Stuffed Chicken Wings with Sticky Rice so delicious. We also had the Persimmon & Sweet Potato Salad. Mushroom Jook almost risotto like served with a poached egg and flavourful with truffles. The Beef Short Rib is braised for 24 hours and served with Korean Banchan + lettuce wrap. The Sujebi, another must have is handcrafted Korean noodles stuffed like a ravioli with pork and shrimp ragu. For cocktails, the Toasted Marshmallow Martini was so tasty made with Korean Rice Wine. Injeolmi Parfait is not too sweet ..luxurious and creamy. The Purple Potato Donut with Buttermilk Ice Cream was very unique and a great way to end the night!! Opened just one year ago! Congrats to Chef MJ and @156cumberland for an outstanding menu. It is no surprise this place made it on the Michelin recommended list.

Very tasty food, but really lacked in terms of service. We came for an early dinner (5 ish) and were one of 4 tables in the restaurant. The server was initially very attentive and provided good recommendations, but once we got the food we never saw the server again - we even had to flag them down several times to get the bill to pay.

The combination of the peach and mint went really well with the burrata. Light and easy to eat. The patio at night is one of the highlights. Overall, Grand Cru Deli serves fantastic food (the apps and desserts were out of this world!) and the place is super cute. A friend mentioned that the colour and decor resembles something from a Wes Anderson film, and he was right - I could see the Grand Budapest reflected in the interior design! We came here for the Winterlicious menu, and since we had three people, we decided to try the entire menu. Brace yourselves for a long and lengthy review! I've organized everything from most to least favourite within each category. Appetizers Broccoli Falafel Salad This was a nice and fresh app, and my favourite of the bunch. You can taste the broccoli bits in the falafel, but it's a lovely flavour. I never thought it could work together like this! The sunflower tahini and smoked labneh were a pleasant and nice touch, and I loved the microplaned / spiralized cucumbers. Seasonal Country Pate This was definitely bang for your buck! A hefty chunk of pate was served on a plate with baguette and crusty bread pieces. Since it's pate, the app was on the heavier side, but still an enjoyable light bite. Matzah Ball Soup This was my first time having matzah, and it was quite interesting! To be honest, this was my least favourite... the schmaltz / chicken fat with dough highly resembled a Chinese fatty fish ball of sorts. The chicken broth was lightly flavoured, filled with celery and carrot pieces. Mains Trout Amandine This trout was so buttery and flaky, tender and moist! Topped with thin slices of almond slivers, there was a nice juxtaposition with the juicy filet and the crunchy bits. As the fish was lightly seasoned, the fried capers added a great punch of salty flavour. The pomme puree (mashed potatoes) was also very hearty and rich; it was a nice consistency and felt so comforting. We unanimously voted this to be the best main. Eggplant Parmesan I was pleasantly surprised at this dish; despite being vegetarian, it had such a rich flavour! It was likely attributed to the mozzarella and the arugula pesto - when eaten together, the entire dish tasted like a lighter lasagna. The side of arugula helped balance the flavours. Braised Beef Short Rib While good, this dish was quite standard. The braised beef was melt-in-your-mouth-tender, but wasn't very seasoned. I found the creamed spinach a little heavy, and the white beans a little bland. Dessert Chocolate Chip Cookie This chocolate chip and miso cookie with salted caramel served in a hot, petite cast iron and topped with vanilla ice cream was the perfect contrast of all that you can think of. Sweet and salty, hot and cold, crunchy and soft, hard and runny, etc. It was such a hearty and comforting dessert! We all raved at this dish. Creme Brulee I'm not typically a fan of creme brulee as I find them to be a little too rich. However, the light, floral taste of the earl grey really stood out and made this dish! I kept scooping bite after bite. Very well executed, and not too sweet at all! Chess Pie This cornmeal-based dessert was my least favourite, although I must say that it had a fantastic and crunchy crust. The custard filling was nice, but I found it too sweet - in fact, the fino sherry cream made it even more sweet. Overall, I really liked Grand Cru Deli. The food was very well executed, and I was pleasantly surprised at the calibre and taste of the dishes. I'd definitely come again to try their regular menu, and have a glass of wine or two!

The liver mousse was smooth and velvety. Thanks for the wine recommendation. It is nice to have restaurant owners that are passionate and knowledgeable about their wine lists. Eating here does feel like I packed a nice picnic basket and have a nice casual lunch in the park. There are 3 "hot" entrée items which are available for dinner only. IMHO which is quite limit in choices. A high end deli sandwich bar might be a hard sell especially at this price point. Maybe some lunch special feature offering and additional items for the dinner menu might brings in more business?!

The location was ideal for theatre-goers, as it was right across from the TIFF building and a stone's throw away from a lot of theatres in the area. The interior was spacious and modern, with a lot of tables and seatings extending to the back of the restaurant. It was quite empty when we went on a weekend afternoon, so service was prompt. The food was excellent!! They put creative spins on classic Thai dishes that turned out very well. Review of the dishes: 1) Raw Oysters (fresh raw BC oysters with roasted chili jam, fried shallots, and house nam jim seafood sauce) - They were like raw oysters in typical Western seafood restaurants, but with a Thai twist. "House Nam Jim Seafood" is a Thai dipping sauce commonly used for steamed or grilled seafood, made of garlic, chilies, lime juice, fish sauce, and cilantro. This sauce, in addition to the roasted chili jam, created a mouthful burst of flavour when the oyster was eaten in one go. The roasted chili jam created a heat effect in the throat, which made it warming. The fried shallots added a nice crunch, in contrast to the smooth raw oyster. This was definitely a unique spin to the plain raw oysters. 2) Larb Crispy Brussels Sprouts (fried Brussels sprouts with lemongrass, cilantro, lime juice, chili flakes, toasted rice powder, fried shallots, and coriander) - I was excited to see a vegetarian version of larb on the menu! Larb is a Lao dish typically made with minced meat, fresh herbs, lime juice, fish sauce, and toasted ground rice. Instead of using meat, they subbed it with crispy Brussels sprouts. I liked the crunch of the Brussels sprouts, but found the dish to be too salty. 3) Eggplant Salad (fried eggplant with black tiger prawns, mint, shallots, Thai chili-garlic lime dressing, and sliced medium soft-boiled egg) - This reminded me of the Filipino dish of tortang talong, except the egg was served on the side instead of being pan-fried and coating the eggplant. The eggplant in this dish was fried and quite sweet & spicy, which I didn't really like. I liked the pieces of black tiger prawns, shallots, and sliced medium soft-boiled egg surrounding it though. The egg especially was perfectly soft with a bit of a gooey egg yolk. What surprised me was the presence of pomegranates in the Eggplant Salad. I always see pomegranates as a common ingredient in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines, but never in Thai dishes. It was a pleasant surprise, and it showed that the creative fusion of Thai, Filipino, and Middle Eastern / Mediterranean elements and ingredients worked well here. 4) SS Egg Fried Rice (jasmine riceberry stir-fried with eggs, green onion, and garlic) + jumbo lump crab meat add-on - This was the dish that made me come to Same Same, and it did not disappoint! I thought the fried rice tasted unique compared to the fried rice I've had at other Thai and Chinese restaurants. It had a strong wok-char look and flavour, and they used jasmine riceberry, which made it taste more chewy and nutty. They did not skimp on the jumbo lump crab meat, and there were "jumbo" pieces of real crab. It seems rare to get real crab (and a lot of it) in fried rice in Thai and Chinese restaurants, so this fried rice was a winner for me. 5) SS Pad Thai (fresh rice noodles, tofu, eggs, peanuts, tamarind, chives, bean sprouts, banana blossom, lime) + black tiger prawns add-on - The tofu and bean sprouts were the stars in this dish. Although the black tiger prawns that we chose as an add-on were really big, for some reason I really liked the tofu in this pad thai more (more flavourful). They used fresh instead of dry rice noodles, which we could tell because the noodles clumped together quickly as soon as it cooled down. 6) Wok Vegetables (stir-fried yu choy sum and green beans) - As simple as this "side dish" was, this was my favourite. We asked for it to be cooked without any sauce because that's how I like my veggies (not a fan of vegetables doused in so much oyster sauce / any thick sauce). They were able to accommodate our customization request, and the dish came out perfect. The green veggies (yu choy sum and green beans) were also still quite crisp and not overcooked, which earned them extra points.

Was so excited to try Same Same and their Samemer-delicious menu for July!…read more Came today with my plus one and we ordered: Appetizers: - deep fried wingette with ma kwen jeaw sauce: I felt the sauce was a bit too sour and salty yet addicting! I kept coming back to it. It came with 10 wings and it was deep fried really nicely, didn't feel too oily. - shrimp toast: house made brioche with cucumber relish and added the peanut sauce espuma. I love bread at baseline and this brioche was so nice and crispy. The cucumber relish was refreshing and slightly sweet. Mains - same same pad thai (vegetarian): now that I'm reading the menu it looks like they use fresh rice noodle but I found that the noodles were SUPER chewy, more chewy than other thai places I had. I appreciate the freshness of the noodles but would also liked if it were a bit easier to chew. Would also have liked if there was more veg in the meal. - ngowpochana chicken cashew: this came with crispy chicken thigh stir fried with (really SPICY) dried chilis and cashew nuts with a side of mixed purple? rice. The rice was tasty and the chicken was really crispy! Came out in small pieces and it was good but was not blown away. Desserts - mango sticky rice: so so good, love how they put butterfly pea in the sticky rice. Mango was ripe and soft, coconut cream was strong, and the jasmine riceberry puff added a great crunch to the dessert. - pandanas kaya toasted brioche: I would return for this dessert. My partner and I LOVED this dessert and how carmelized the toast was, it was divine. Final thoughts We loved the desserts and appetizers but felt the mains weren't super special. Staff were friendly. It did take us a while to get our food- appetizers came quick but took more than half an hour for our mains to come and waited more for our dessert. It was pretty busy but maybe they're still getting their groove as the Samemer delicious promotion brought in an influx of customers.

It was nice to have a more secluded spot, but the seating was quite drafty/chilly and dark, so didn't quite capture the warm ambiance of the rest of the restaurant. We were also offered a wonderful family style tasting menu for $90 per person. Overall, the food was fantastic, especially the seafood options. The dishes were innovative and fresh. Stand-out dishes: - Smoked Fish - chips n' dip - Scallop (raw) - chicken fat, green strawberry, serrano pepper - Tomato - feta, green olive, red onion - Sea Bream - peas, cumin, scallion - soooo good I would re-order all of the above in a heartbeat. So delicious. The following dishes were good but not amazing: - Bread - cultured butter - Ravioli - cheese curd, potato, leek - Crumb Cake - coffee, pumpkin - Quince - foie gras, sponge toffee And the following dishes had some flaws (though still enjoyable): - Spaghetti - chorizo, peppers, stracciateila (way too salty) - Half Chicken - truffle, green bean, gravy (chicken was quite dry) The portion sizes were sufficient. And the service was really attentive and quick. I wish they had more non-alcoholic drink options.
