Please forgive my pics, it's definitely more of a dimly lit, date-night vibe, so they aren't the best, but I hope they are able to convey the explosion of flavors, at least a little! First off, this place is tiny, I doubt they even seat 40, so reservations are a must. I admit, I wasn't aware of the policy and wandered in without one, late on a Thursday night, after a workshop at the Cummer. They were kind enough to let me grab a seat at the bar, but that was definitely a one off. As someone who is practically allergic to planning, having to make reservations, IN ADVANCE - GASP! may be difficult for me, but completely worth it I prefer to eat tapas style, because I enjoy having a few bites of a number of different things with varied flavors and textures, but since I was on my own, I was a bit limited with how much I could order and eat. I got the zanahorias, an absolute flavor bomb, with raw carrot ribbons, saturated in vinegar, olive oil and Moroccan spices, topped with sweet sultanas and crunchy almonds for contrast and the freshness of cilantro. Then I moved on to the tomato and cucumber salad, served over a dill whipped cheese, garnished with coucous, sprigs of dill and pickled onions. I think I should have had it come out first, because it was light and fresh and lovely, but didn't hold up to the intensity of flavors of the zahorias. I also would have liked just a little bit of sea salt to sprinkle over the tomatoes, but that's just a personal preference. Lastly, I got the shrimp pil-pil, which is usually offered as an octopus dish, but was being served with shrimp that night. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and I basically wanted an entire loaf of their homemade baguette to soak up all that garlicky oil, but my absolute favorite thing was that bright, lemony aioli. It reminded me of a dish that I had in Nice years ago and made me question why I don't put aioli on everything. I was too full to get dessert, but I'm looking forward to going back, hopefully with a group, so I can try more of the menu. read more

Very cute and intimate restaurant! Limited seating so definitely recommend making reservations. Had dinner here and everything was delicious and cooked with quality ingredients. They also had great vegetarian options. My friend and I shared everything as it is tapas style and meant to be shared. We ordered the House Made Ricotta with peasant bread, Zanahorias (spiced carrot cold dish), butter braised cabbage and the daily risotto. Our favorite was the cabbage dish. Super flavorful and loaded with spices which we loved. Risotto was good but seemed a tiny bit undercooked and very cheese forward. We also shared the cheesecake (very small portion) which was good but was missing the graham cracker crust. Would've been better with it for sure. The only real negative was that every time someone went to the bathroom, the door would open and close and you could smell the (not great) bathroom smell. It would go away eventually but not great experience when eating food. Otherwise, overall great food, good service and would go again to try other dishes! When I was visiting Jacksonville, I saw 13 Gypsies on Google Maps and just knew I had to check it out. The restaurant is small and cozy with limited seating. There is some bar seating, but reservations are definitely recommended. The menu is unique and delicious. I wasn't drinking that night, but I noticed they have an interesting wine menu as well. I made reservations for me and my friends, five was the max allowed, with 8 PM as the only available time slot for a party this size. We arrived a little early and our table was ready. We sat in front of the The Last Supper portrait. My friends and I felt so comfortable and the music and decor helped set a groovy vibe. We ordered almost everything on the menu. We started off with the tomato and cucumber salad with couscous, citronette, dill whipped feta and pickled red onion. This dish was tasty, healthy and the veggies were fresh. We had the peasant bread, which was soft yet crisp on the crust. Then came the house made chorizo so properly prepared with honey, sauteed pear and warm spiced dates. You must eat the chorizo with a little taste of everything on the plate! The combo is splendid! Then my favorite dish of the night arrived, butter braised cabbage made with brown butter and house kimchi paste. The cabbage was carefully cooked to perfection! The lovely taste was hard to describe because I've never tasted anything like it. This is a must try! Next up were the chicken meatballs topped with candied jalapenos and chili-ginger agrodolce (sweet and sour Italian sauce). So juicy and deliscious! Then we were served Roman style gnocchi made with beef, mushroom stock and utter pecorino (sheep's milk cheese). This cheesy rich dish was surprising. When I saw it I didn't know what to expect. But goodness is what I got! The house made ricotta was light and fluffy like a cloud. Loved this dish! It was made with smoked honey and served with grilled peasant bread. Then I tasted the octopus, which was deliscious! Only three of the five at the table would try it. The other two don't know what they were missing lol! We tasted all three desserts, cheesecake, tres leches and a peasant bread pudding. All were delectable, but the tres leches was the best. The best I've EVER had! Our server Andrew was friendly and helped all of us decide on our drink of choice. He kept our waters full and checked on us regularly. I am already thinking about making another reservation. They have been under my "to-try" list for quite some time now and that moment finally came. TIP: Book ahead and make reservations before you come here or else you will get turned down. My thoughts... - Spanish Pork Mojo Skewers (2/5): Good flavors, blends well with the dip provided. But it felt like I was eating more pork fat than meat - Cucumber & Tomato Salad (5/5): A well rounded, delicious dish. Makes you wanna lick the plate clean. - Mongolian Beef (5/5): Delicious all around. It was still delicious even if not dipped in the sauce provided - Curry Cauliflower (2/5): Three cauliflower pieces for $14. Thaaaat's it!?!?! Enough said. Not your typical Tapas menu, but we loved it and enjoyed everything we had. Very good service, but it is a very small restaurant and things are just a tad rushed. We tried many plates and our waiter did a nice job of coursing them out. Hard to say if we had a favorite, but I would recommend the Roman Gnocchi, Croquettes and it is worth ordering the bread to enjoy all the delicious sauces in many of the dishes. I think 5-6 tables only with a bar. Having browsed their menu several times, I knew what I wanted to try. Theirs is tapas style and we were a group of 4, so we shared everything. We ordered Cucumber Tomato Salad, Spanish Pork Mojo Skewers, Cauliflower in Curry Sauce, Butter Braised Cabbage, Risotto and Mongolian Beef. We each got a skewer of the pork and the beef, and they are definitively the dish that stood out. Savory and delicious! However, the rest of the dishes were just okay, I was expecting an explosion of flavors and they were just underwhelming. Omg the food here is to die for! I finally got a reservation and I regret not going sooner! The service was great and feels personally since there's only 6 tables and hardly anyone new comes in while you're dinning. The room is so cute and decorated with Catholic icons, which we loved! Upon arriving in downtown Jacksonville it was obvious Mi Amante was ready for a nice dinner. I had my hopes up to try the well reviewed 13 Gypsies. It was too late for reservations; I'd have to rely on my charm and good looks. Turns out neither of those were going to work. Seems they had a large party coming in and there wouldn't be space for us. I moved onto plan b...begging and pity. Explained that it was our first night in town and we'd take anything including outside if they would reconsider. BINGO! We took a small table outside and were introduced to our server Tiffany. Tiffany was very helpful to a couple of newbies. She told us two people would probably chow down up to 7 plates. Apparently we'll need to up our game; we tapped out after 5. There was nothing ordered that we didn't enjoy. We ordered a bottle of Calazul Albarino, light and refreshing and would be a great palate cleanser in between dishes. Not necessarily the in correct order we feasted on cured meats and peasant bread, mushroom sevilla (OMG this was so good we would've licked the bowl clean if it wasn't our first visit and didn't want to look like heathens), house made chorizo with sauteed pear, pork meatballs, and a "roman" style gnocchi (completely different interpretation than we've ever had but Tiffany told us what to expect...and they were the best pillow like cheesy goodness). I dined solo on a Saturday evening and tried so many delicious dishes that were expertly prepared and had amazing service and recommendations to top it off. My boyfriend has talked about this restaurant since we started dating and his Mom loves it as well. She was in town so we visited and got there right when they opened at 5. We didn't have any reservations, but they were able to seat us and were very nice. I think they have about 7 or 8 tables in the entire space. The interior decor is perfection and the music was absolutely on point. The service was great and our server answered all of our questions. It is a tapas place so I recommend everyone ordering 2 dishes and then you get more variety. The ambience and service are great. The food for me was good, but some things just weren't for me. We ordered the peasant bread, From the Chamber, Mongolian beef skewers, mojo skewers, gnudi, roasted crimini mushrooms, and 2 of the tomato and cucumber salads. The bread and Mongolian beef skewers were my favorite. I can't remember what it was - Either the dry cured meat or the gnudi, but something tasted really strongly of fennel or something adjacent and overwhelmed my palate a bit. My boyfriend and his Mom both loved the salad. He also loved the Cabernet Sauvignon - I think they normally have a blackberry one on the menu, but it wasn't available that night so hopefully in the future! I want to go back soon for a date night and try a few more things from the menu and update my review. The food was not very good. The Mongolian beef was the best of the five dishes that we had but it was still extremely underwhelming. It tasted fine, but not much better than fine. The octopus did not taste fresh. The chorizo was less than average however, I did like the dates in that dish. The gnocchi was terrible. My wife hated it and i had to eat it. We really wanted to like the crab beignet, but it tasted like tuna fish in a can. To make matters worse now I'm on the toilet with diarrhea for the second time this morning. "Tapas is a celebration of life." This quote from Jose Andres Puerta is a true statement of my experience at 13 Gypsies. Even though it was just my party and I upon our arrival this afternoon, the quality of the small dishes (tapas) was delightful and worth sharing - quite similar to life, itself. We ordered the Risotto (selection of the day,) House Made Ricotta with house-bread, the Roman-style Gnocchi (which was my tapas order,) and a bit of gnoci (which I think that is how it was worded on the menu as their miniature bites of gnocchi.) My party and I enjoyed our amazing tapas amongst each other. As well as a glass of Berola for each of us because I heard a glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away.... no? But, it does sound tempting, right? LOL! The waitress/bartender was amazing, attentive, welcoming, and highly knowledgeable of their menu options. One thing about her character that stood out (to me) was the way she greeted and attended to another party (that obviously had reservations) as if there was a restaurant full of guest. Instead of saying, "Just have a seat anywhere!" In which I have experienced the "just have a seat" attitude from waiters or hosts at other restaurants, previously. Overall, I can't believe I've passed by this location numerous of times. I've even worked in a office a few blocks away when I first moved to Jacksonville still haven't visited until a couple of years later - to date. Wish I had more photos to share but, the quality time spent with my friends and favorite designer overpowered my foodie moments. LOL! UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW: I was contacted by one of the servers that works there regarding my review. This person was very polite and I appreciated the time they took to reach out to me. It was pointed out to me that on their website is does reflect reservations recommended. I somehow missed that when I was looking on my phone. I will always admit when I am wrong. This server thought my one star review was too harsh, especially in light that I was wrong. However, my one star was not based on the fact that I couldn't get a table. It was based on the conversation and attitude the man greeting me gave to me. And now that I know the website does indeed state reservations recommended, I am even more curious as to why he didn't say anything. Customer service is everything!! Treating people politely and truthfully is key. I changed my one star for a two star because the server took time and reached out and corrected me, politely, and offered to give me 5 star service if I were able to return. This server is a keeper and is a great spokesperson for 13 Gypsies! I won't say their name because I don't want to get them in trouble. We had a great dinner here and really enjoyed the experience overall. It's intimate, it's cozy, it's casual, it's tapas. I really like the concept centered around peasant food, and I think the menu is well put together. I think we tried a good half of the menu and most of the dishes were great, with a random just-OK here and there. I would say for a vegetarian - it is a great place to go, as a large majority of the menu were meat-free. Things we really enjoyed: house-made peasant bread with in-house ricotta (super fresh), curry cauliflower (delicious sauce), gnudi (perfect), mojo pork and mongolian beef skewers, mushroom sevilla (very rich - but super tasty). The tres leches cake we had for dessert was simply the best I have ever had, and the portion was huge (save room!) Their house sangria is also really good. Things that were just OK: The butter braised cabbage with the kimchi paste was just OK - I think the kimchi paste was a little on the absurdly hot side, and to the point that it just tasted like capsaicin. The brussel sprouts were just OK, too - I liked them, but nothing to rave about. You definitely get the Spanish-tile kitchen and hand-crafted dishes feel when you dine here. I would definitely recommend this place for their eclectic dishes and rotating menu. We got the risotto of the day, garlic shrimp, Vietnamese meatballs, pork meatballs, and pan seared cod. The risotto was a great combination of flavors and texture: soft and creamy with a hint of lime. I understand why this is one of their most popular dishes. We've dined here countless times over at least 7 years, many for special occasions & referred this place to everyone we knew. We've spent over $400 since December 30th and it was the only place our child wanted to dine. As a former bartender, server, manager and local restaurant owner, I was dumbfounded at our treatment. To support the accuracy of this review, read YELP post by another customer about same server on 1/31/24. WED EVE, 4/24/24, after years of begging friends to make a 100 mile+ round trip, several friends booked using OpenTable, 1 table for 6pm,1 for 6:30. Some needed to arrive/leave @ various times for work & parental obligations(which needn't be explained,I do so for insight). We had the 6:30 reservation, so we promptly arrived @ 6:15. Noting our friends with the 6pm booking looked displeased, we were saddened that "An****, who's the BEST FOH mgr in Jax, WASN'T working. The person instead was dismissive, rude & annoyed-specifically with us-from the moment we entered the establishment. We waited for this person to greet us, which never happened (not a big deal as it was nearly full). Our friends informed us the only empty table next to theirs was ours, so we sat ourselves.That table of friends explained to us they were told 3 rules: 1) they had 1.5 hours to complete their meal, 2) it's "against the rules" to push our tables together, 3) I myself had broken the 3rd rule by not calling to confirm my reservation. Being ignored/not served for at least 10 mins + being spoken of in a derogatory manner was unnerving and obviously deliberate, since we only had 1.5 hours to eat. We were uncertain whether we'd be served at all, having "broken rules". Having proof of confirmation text @7:10pm 4/23, I walked away from the dining area to the corner to address the false info inferred to other table. When I showed the server our confirmation, I was accused of purposefully avoiding their confirmation phone call. My reply was I didn't even know of the call, and as I don't work there I don't know "the rules" she repeatedly said I'd broken. The disgruntled server began a tirade as elaborate as a Hollywood script or pulled from news headlines.This server shouted bizarre theories, started to become emotional when I defended myself, then complained to the back of house when I asked if she was the owner or mgr. One critical tirade about my prior bookings was shouted to the entire restaurant, which could've been falsified considering they did as much thru Opentable by stating we were no shows. So a gaggle of "loud and rude" middle aged women "abused the system" were escorted out by a cook for attempting to meet, greet and eat. The vitriol and contempt displayed towards all 7 of us by staff was unsubstantiated, scary & disturbing. I've meant to come here for years and today was finally the day. I've always enjoyed Spanish food and tapas etc. so this was a great opportunity to share something I've enjoyed with my wife. While I can't say it was a home run, I can certainly say it was very good and that's still great. The mushroom appetizer was delicious, with Spanish olive oil and shaved onions and garlic perfuming some fantastic mushrooms. I loved it with the toasted bread. My wife didn't love it, but I sure did. Next we had albondigas and boy were they fantastic! Garlicky, rich and bright tomato sauce with these perfectly cooked little balls of meaty goodness. The shrimp was so well cooked and so flavorful too. Imagine what scampi wants to be, and this is what you wish you'd get elsewhere. So good! The pork mojo skewers were next and boy howdy, were they nice too. Very strong Spanish flavor on the marinade with lots of cumin, which liked a lot. The cream added a nice balance too. The cheesecake was a bit disappointing, but still decent. I mean, it's still cheesecake, how bad can it be, right? Andrew, our server was very attentive and friendly, and he was so busy. He was running around taking care of every table, so it was really impressive that he was able to keep on top of everything so well. The area is fun, which I liked. Yum, yum and more yum! Just keep the plates coming :) 13 Gypsies is a quaint little Bistro in Riverside. The chef & owner also runs Foo Dog Curry Traders on the same block (also worth a stop). The restaurant is small - but not crowded. They have a limited number of tables so they can concentrate on each one. From our server to the kitchen staff - everyone made sure we had an enjoyable evening. We shared so many plates that I lost track! My favorites were the garlic shrimp, sherried mushrooms, Spanish mojo pork and The Risotto - I could have made an entire meal of the Risotto!! Anything here is magnificent!! You cannot go wrong with anything I would suggest to always get the risotto of the day even if you may think the combination may not be to your liking trust me it will. The chamber is a must as well what ever it may be that day just get it you will not be disappointed. Lastly the roman gnocchi is another item to get every time you go. Like I said everything is good so you cant go wrong. Favorite local eclectic tapas influenced by flavors of the world. We enjoyed gamas al ajillo steaming from the kitchen. The toasted peasant bread at the bottom of the dish soaked up the Spanish flavors. The unique combo of homemade spicy chorizo balanced with sautéed date and pear is surprising treat. We always get the risotto of the day and have never been disappointed by a rich creamy perfectly cooked risotto. The cabbage with brown butter and Korean spice is my new favorite dish. Cauliflower with peas and curry sauce is flavorful. Ohh my! They also make a fantastic tre leches cake. Small place that has attentive service. Truly a local gem. Me and the hubs came right at opening, of course, because we read that since it's such a small place, reservations are recommended. We were fine coming so early but people did start coming in after us so I could tell it was a local fave. We love tapas so of course we loved this place. I ordered the empanada of kale cuz... why wouldn't you for $5. That was probably my favorite thing. It was so flippin good and came with this house made dill buttermilk dip (aka homemade ranch) and I wanted to pour it all over my life. There was a cute little anniversary couple that came in so the chef prepared a special tomato and pear gazpacho so (of course) we had to get it. It was delicious and had a hint of red onion. It came with the house made peasant bread which was so good. At the last minute I added the house made chorizo. It comes with a pear (grilled... braised... something) and dates. Omg. This chorizo is smokey and has a spice to it and it paired SO well with the dates and pear. The risotto of the day was mushroom. I'm not a mushroom fan but the hubs loves me so we got it. I tried it, all bites without shrooms, and it was very good. We also got the Brussels sprouts, which I always have to try at a restaurant, but they weren't my favorite. Hubs loved em though and said the blue cheese dressing was amazing. We will definitely be coming back, and that's saying something. The hubs is not the biggest fan of going back somewhere unless is was BOMB. So there ya go. read more

Amazing restaurant! I went there for my first time for a birthday party. They told me they rented out the whole place and to RSVP because the max people was 20. YEAH! The Max they could fit and seat is 20! It's a small restaurant so be sure to plan accordingly on who's eating with you! Or I'm not sure if they take reservations. When we rented out the place apparently it was $40 all you can eat tapas and all you can drink wine. They have a pretty decent selection of tapas from humus to pan seared cod, cauliflower curry, garlic shrimp. Very interesting menu! The plates were small but if you order a lot it will fill you up!!! It actually gives you a chance to try everything on the menu!!!! The waiter was absolutely amazing! He was understanding it was a birthday party and always checked on us! I will honestly recommend this place for small parties! I will definitely bring my family here for my graduation! I love it!! read more

After what seems like a life time I finally made it to 13 Gypsies. Believe me I would have come sooner but you must make a reservation for this place and I don't always plan accordingly. That being said thank you to Susan S for graciously planning a get together here! The inside has an intimate and cozy feel which would be great for couples as well as small groups of friends. They have sangria, wine and beer for anyone craving an adult beverage. The menu consists of tapas, meats, desserts and more. We ordered almost everything on the menu and I must say it was all scrumptious and delectable! My all time favorites were the Risotto (of course), Gnocchi and the Roasted pears. The Tres Leches dessert was so creamy and delicious I could have tipped the plate back and drank the remains. A lovely night with great company and I'd venture to say the best food in Jacksonville. read more
