When the owner/master chef is prepping and cooking the homemade fresh food in the kitchen, then you know the food is going to taste amazingly good! My very first visit brought back fun foodie memories when visiting Puerto Rico several times and eating many homemade dishes when I lived In NJ. My favorite Latin sounds could be heard while outside of the restaurant and more so upon entering. The interior decor was spacious and made me feel like I was away on vacation in P.R. Staff was welcoming and friendly. The owner helped make me feel at home and was super professional. Then came the food and my refreshing non-alcoholic drink. My appetizer was a lobster empanada...Oh my how yummy! One of the lunch specials of the day was a Chinese Puerto Rican fusion style fried rice platter. My choice of protein was the popular fried pork chunks. French fries and an egg roll were included in the platter. Another popular favorite condiment was the "Mayo-Ketchup" sauce that one can drizzle on the food and as much as you please! To help wash down and add a nice sweet balance to the food, I ordered the "Guayaba" fruit juice. Fruity and tropical taste of its own. I had a work event at Toon Town and was thrilled to know I could grab lunch here afterwards. Comida boricua is my soul food, so I was so excited. I wasn't even hungry, but I had to have something! Folks, the food I chose/received was really tasty, but the service was a turnoff to the point I'll think twice before next time. It felt like my time was an imposition, truly. I walked in, no greeting. I got a menu, looked at it for a few minutes then moved to the bar to place a to-go order. I think he said I should place it at the front, but the music was pretty loud so I'm not sure. He took my order: one pionono, one alcapurria de pollo. He came back and said something about "alcapurria fresh out" and I thought he meant out of the fryer. I went ahead and added yuca frita to the order. I waited for a bit (fine, since the yuca had to be cooked) and when I got to my car... no alcapurria! I went back in, and he said, "I told you we were out." Hmm. Ok. Thanks...? I didn't hear..? And in hindsight, maybe you could suggest another item?? But whatever. The empanadilla de pionono (gr beef, potatoes, sweet plantains) was delicious, as were the fries and accompanying garlic sauce. I was trying to wait out the inclement weather to get into the jazz fest nearby. I wasn't the only one. This place had packed tables, bar, and line for togo orders. I wanted to keep my order simple. If I were to have eaten a full meal, I would have gotten sleepy waiting to get into the festival. I ordered a crab empanada and a lobster empanada. Especially, since they've opened a brick and mortar. The downtown location may seem questionable to some, but don't let that fool you. Also I've never felt unsafe. Once you step inside, you feel the Caribbean vibe. On the day I went, which was a Saturday, they had karaoke. I loved that there was a lot of interaction with the guests. Most of the entrees that we've ordered came with nachos, they offer these instead of fries or chips. And each time, the nachos have been stale. The first time, they were stale but somewhat edible. A few were a little crunchy. The second visit though, they were so stale that they were chewy (zero crunch) so we just ended up throwing them away. Such a waste as they put cheese and meat on them too. We mentioned it to the staff and they literally had nothing to say. A simple solution would be to either reheat the nachos in an oven before serving, or offer alternate sides. French fries would be great. Maybe even potato sticks or plantains. Browsing my delivery app for a new food to try, their place popped up. After seeing the empanadas it was a wrap. I ordered the Mariscos (Seafood), Langosta (Lobster), and Jueyes (Crab) Empanadillas and couldn't wait to get them. When they finally delivered they were still hot through the bag. Hidden gem. The outside is bright, music playing, seating area. Its a really cute setup. Everyone was super nice, the good was beyond good. They have alot to choose from. I ordered 3 empanadas: crab, lobster, and beef/cheese/plaintain. I also ordered the fried cheese, pork belly (its a large app), and mufungo. I've heard of this place long before I got a chance to give it a try. Today was the day! Location wise, it's situated great for games or eats when you don't want the usual tailgate food (it's so close to the stadium you can walk there) however it's not really in an ideal spot for "foot traffic". I went around lunch time and it seems that this is the spot to eat at if your anywhere near here. There was a constant flow of people. The decor, smells, and vibes screamed Puerto Rico. The counter top has a warmer full of empanadas, all sorts, kinds I never even heard of. I ordered a beef empanada, the pork bites plate, and a sandwich for my husband. The empanada almost didn't make it home. I took a bite in the car and couldn't help taking another and another. There were 2 sauces given so I figured I should save a small piece so that I could use the sauce provided. One sauce was spicy (similar to a hot sauce) the other was like a mayo base with a pinkish color. Both were good, especially together. The pork bite plate was good. The pork itself was tasty and cooked really well. The outside was crunchy and the inside was moist. The rice wasn't bad but I expected more flavor. The salad was wilted by the time I got to it. I think it was the heat from the other food. It would probably be best to separate them when it's a to-go order. The Cubano sandwich was huge, like cover the plate huge and my husband said it was really good (mind you, it was on the cold side when he ate it and that was still his response). As far as payment goes, they do not accept cards, only venmo, cash app, or zelle. That could pose a issue for some, like older customers who may not use those and don't have cash available. I did have minor difficulty understanding the menu, Spanish is the first language of the establishment. The specials for the day were in Spanish without translation underneath. The menu does have translation so that's a plus. Now let's talk about the wait...that's what I took off stars for. I understand it was the lunch rush but I waited for some time just for take out. I also noticed many of the customers that opted to fine in waiting on there food as well. I would suggest definitely calling in your order, or wondering online if you don't want to wait. Absolutely terrible experience. I wouldn't normally write anything below a three star experience, but we did attempt to raise the issue at the restaurant, and were dismissed, and then given a side of attitude. The music was so loud it hit over 100 dB far beyond safe hearing levels. We could barely hear each other even yelling. That alone is a deal breaker for me. Then the food took almost an hour to come out. By the time it did, we had to leave for our daughter's event so we asked for it to go. When we did, there was no consideration of the wait, and we watched the kitchen staff roll their eyes and literally take the plates and dump them sideways in a box. Not to mention, we also experienced a live stream thst got positioned right in front of us while we were waiting, capturing us in the shot without any ask of permission. The food itself was nowhere near the traditional Puerto Rican that we are accustomed to and maybe that is the point. However, the fried pork chunks were seriously overcooked, and the bistec sandwich was so salty we couldn't eat it. My husband went to the food truck once before and had vowed not to go back the first time. The carne frita was over fried and dry, the chimichurri sauce was bland and watered down. The churrasco was over cooked and the flavor wasn't that good, the mofongo was lacking in flavor and not the right consistency and the tostones de pana were not good. The only good thing about this place is the fried yuca. The food looks good but doesn't actually taste good.
