Alchemy House may just be the most obscure coffee shop in the metro. They are only open until noon…read moreon weekends and they are in a ruralish area of northeast Independence inside of a planned housing addition with no visibility from Truman Rd. I set my alarm for early on Sunday (10am is early for me) and made the 35 minute trek across town and ventured onto roads that I didn't know existed. I arrived at New Town at Harmony subdivision - a new planned community that I immediately fell in love with. Alchemy House shares a small building with the management company for the property and has limited seating inside but a nice courtyard where you could sit and watch the residents in their golf carts heading to the fitness center, postal building or walking their dogs to the nearby canal, lake or Blue Creek trails. A truly idyllic small town feeling amongst beautiful small homes. As soon as I stepped foot inside I was greeted by the owner Jonathan, and given the lowdown on the business, community, and coffee industry- a great host that told me he is an engineer by profession, but I'm pretty sure that he has a PhD in customer service! I ordered one of their signature drinks - The Philosopher's Stone; an espresso latte beverage with vanilla, cinnamon and honey. Perfect. The residents of this small community are blessed to have such a hidden gem in their neighborhood and if it wasn't so far away, Id certainly be a weekend regular.

Such a cute local coffee shop in Blue Springs! Scout Coffee has a great variety of drinks,…read moreincluding some really fun seasonal flavors. I tried the pumpkin cookie butter latte and absolutely loved it! Their protein balls were AMAZING, too! The atmosphere is welcoming, and I love how creative they get with their seasonal offerings. Definitely a great spot to grab a coffee, enjoy a little treat, and support a local business. I'll absolutely be back!

The passport offers a free latte with any menu purchase, so it seems a bit hypocritical to complain about pricing, but $7 for a pop-tart?? That was definitely sticker shock when I pulled out the debit card. For $3.99 it would have been the best apple pie pop-tart I've ever had, for $7...ehh... good, but I'm still trying to get over the price point 8 hours later. I ordered an iced mocha latte for my freebie, and it was delicious on a beautiful fall afternoon. So, balancing out the price for two items makes it seem like a bargain...right? The repurposed house near the old downtown area is quaint with multiple rooms and a front porch. A hodgepodge of art, plants and seating options make this a unique and independent coffee destination worthy of supporting. I would most definitely stop back if and when I'm in Blue Springs next. If you see me there in the future sipping on cup of drip, enjoying a chai, or slamming an espresso, just mind your own business if you see a 50-cent Kellogg's pop-tart that may or may not be sticking out of my shirt pocket.

I'm so glad I recently learned of Campus Grounds. This coffee shop is unique because it is "Made…read morepossible by the Fort Osage School District" and "provides a real-world learning experience for students at the Fort Osage Career & Technology Center." I love that this provides business and entrepreneurial students with real-world experience. This is a fantastic idea. The employees were great, explaining the shop's backstory and their plans for this next year of students. The employees also mentioned that a lot of the pieces on the property were made by other groups. There's a giant metal coffee cup at their entrance which was welded together by the school's student as well. Students also created some of the artwork in the building. This is the type of shop that the community needs! I had a great experience, and their coffee was top-tier. The prices are relatively low, and the quality is excellent, making this the perfect place to spend time. I got the birthday cake latte and felt that I got a good value for what I paid for. It was so tasty and better than other birthday cake lattes I've had in the past. There are multiple spaces inside and outside that can cater to any group. Upstairs, there's a large dining table with plenty of seats, great for meetings. The inside and outside seating areas can accommodate smaller to mid-sized groups. I will be returning, as I could have stayed there all day and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and great coffee.
