I was in the area for work and decided to treat my husband to a night out. I thought the whiskey tour would be a nice change of scenery and experience. I went "all out" and did the "tour" with what was listed as a food pairing. The "tour" ended up being looking at the vats and barrels you could already see through the giant window - not in operation. The food pairing was THE smallest sliver of cheese or salami you could possibly imagine. The experience was not worth the cost. I will say our server was extremely friendly. read more

Came in as a walk in on a Friday and this place is pretty cool! Keep in mind as a walk in you can only have a tasting which is 6 different varieties or 1 cocktail. However if you make a reservation 24 hours in advance, you can have more, based on the rules they are under. Overall this place has a fun vibe and friendly people. My only compliant being they don't change the glasses frequently for the 6 small tastes you get and the stronger ones that have more peat flavor will overpower everything else. read more

Neat spot to check out! You can do a tasting to sample different varieties of whiskey they make, and they serve a few different cocktails (they'll do some as mocktails as well if you ask). The people who help you are very knowledgeable and friendly, and you may even get to meet the owner and learn the story of this spot. If you become a member, they do member events that include tastings, cocktails, and food. You can really get a sense of the community they're building and how much the owner and staff care about their work and creating a positive experience. They are constantly working to improve the space and offer high quality whiskeys! read more

I arranged a whiskey tasting for the Meetup group that normally goes wine tasting. There are three options for tasting - small, medium and a larger tasting with food pairing combined with a tour of the distillery. We decided on the one with the tour. This place is located in Downtown San Jose, on 4th Street. There is parking outside and along the street. It's a quiet street and we went on a Sunday evening. It was our group of 6 and we were the only ones when we arrived. It was a 2 hour tasting and during that time a small group of members came by and sat at the bar. So not terribly busy on a Sunday evening. The ambiance is great, the tables and the bar have the distillery as the background behind glass and its very impressive. We were all greeted with a High Ball on arrival. Once we were half way through the drink, the owner started pouring the various whiskeys for the tasting. The tastings are all 1/2 oz and we were supposed to get 6 tastings but it ended up being around 10, it was a bit much for me. The owner is the one who pours and explains the various whiskeys and he is very knowledgeable and passionate. And, a lot of these are award-winning spirits. My impression, before I made the booking, was that the whiskeys would be poured as we walked through the distillery and stopped at various points. But the tour was after the tasting and it would have been better the other way. It's not a long tour and since it is a small place, the talk about the distillery could have been conducted during the tasting as as well. This tour came with food pairing but it's very small pieces of cheese or salami, merely to enhance the taste of the whiskey. You sipped the whiskey, took a bite of a small piece of cheese provided and then tried the spirit again to see the difference. Not like most food pairings. No outside food allowed The staff that poured and talked about the whiskeys has a a lot of information about what other foods to pair it with etc. Their website could use some tweaking. read more

I made a reservation online for hubby's birthday since he loves whisky. We did the "Private Cocktail and Whisky Tasting" - $30/person. It included 4 tastings + a cocktail w/one of the whiskies. I had to push out the date a couple times and they were understanding and accommodating. We arrived a bit early to our reservation and were promptly seated at a table. Derek took care of us. We were poured the first whisky, given an explanation of the whisky we were tasting then were left alone to savor it and we took notes on the paper provided. I like this format then he'd bring us another one. The list had 4 tastings but we tried more than that :) For the cocktail at the end, we were given 3 options. I thought we would have a few more options to pick from. I picked a penicillin - it was sweet and gingery. It was good but maybe would've liked to have had another sweet option to pick from since the other 2 didn't appeal to me. I didn't fully see what the "private" part was of this tasting. It seemed like a regular tasting to me like a wine tasting where you sit and they bring you the wines one by one. If we were in a private room, I could see it being private but it wasn't. I liked where we sat though. When we arrived, a couple people were there and then left and then we were the only ones there for the rest of the tasting. So I guess it was kinda private at that point since it was just us and Derek. It would've been nice if perhaps there was ambiance music playing in the background - it was very quiet. Also maybe some snack offerings like pistachios or almonds to go with the tasting would be great since there was no food to purchase. read more

We finally got to visit 10th Street's distillery for a tasting, last fall. So this review is a bit old but I still highly recommend checking them out. I mean, it's a whiskey distillery right here in the Valley! It's great to sit and sip among the barrels, and hear from the staff about what they're up to. It doesn't hurt to know these are award-winning spirits, either :) There are both peated and unpeated varieties so you'll a terrible time trying to decide what exactly you like best. We went there Sunday at 3pm. It was not crowded and that's was nice. We did the flight plus a cocktail. We have seen them at the Highland Games and wanted to go since we are close. Their whiskey is top notch and quite a few offerings. The cocktails were delicious and made with the whiskey of your choice. My bad as I thought I'd reviewed 10th Street! In June my son-in-law and I stopped in to see and taste the local whiskey. It was closed for tasting, but one of the owners let us in, gave us tastings of every product, and even let us tour and taste the in-progress Peated Single Malt finished in Napa wine casks. The owner showed us engineering of the stills and air valves necessary for the volatile flammable precious whiskey. We ended up leaving with bottles of Single Malt and Peated Single Malt. I really liked the tasting from the wine cask and got a fifth of the Peated Single Malt Single Barrel Finished in the Wine Cask. In just a week it's a third gone so have to get up to San Jose again for more and to taste any new products! Being in an industrial warehouse, parking is easy just outside the SJ business areas. read more

A friend of mine here in Yelp recommended me to try this whisky...I'm glad he did. I tried it neat and it has this citrusy fruity flavor whit the right alcohol kick. This whisky is made in San Jose, CA (sadly I had to order it on line and wait for it for 4 days because it is not available in Texas yet) by a very new distillery, but they really learned very quickly how to make a good product...It reminds me of whiskys from much older and known distilleries like Yamasaki or Glenlivet. They have two options available, peated (they source their peated malt from Scotland) and no peated...I tried the non peated as I am not a fan of smoky whisky. I really liked it, I hope they can soon offer their products here in Texas. If you like Scotch...You are going to like 10th Street Whisky! read more

Wow! Excellent whisky and the employees were very knowledgeable and helpful! Never really bought whisky until I went here.

"Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough." - Mark Twain I was fortunate enough to get a private tour of the South Bay's first whisky distillery, and I've gotta say I was really impressed. These boys run a first class operation and have it down to science. They import their peated barley straight from Scotland herself but everything else from the water and the microbes in the air are pure San Jose. They've invested a ton into their gigantic copper kettles and age the finished product for almost two years in American Oak barrels. Their hard work is already paying dividends as they received an award at the 2018 Whiskeys of the World competition for "Best in Class." Admittedly I'm not a big whisky drinker but their product is so smooth and full of smoky peat flavor that I became an instant fan and purchased a bottle for my personal collection. Bottles run around $60-70/ea, depending on location. Availability is still limited as they're just getting started but it can be found at various high-end restaurants and liquor stores throughout the South Bay & SF. They are hoping to be in Total Wine & More soon, so keep an eye out. Can I tell you how exciting I am to have a distillery in town? I was JUST about to try one of their tastings and then we got the SIP put a stop to that. Fast forward two months and they started making hand sanitizer. Since my wife and I are both teachers, I figured we might as well stock up on a gallon each in anticipation for our classrooms soon enough. I ordered two gallons and their Distillers Cut Peated Whiskey. Stopped in to pick it up. The staff was super nice - the gentleman I talked to was super nice and you could tell he was passionate for distilling. Fun to talk to as well. Honest to God, I couldn't wait to get home and try it. It's delicious. I only tried a little bit so far, but it's more on the smoky side than super peaty. If I had to place it on a scale, I'd say it's closer to Caol Ila 12 which is perfect. It is a beautiful amber color and has a nice smoky finish. Caol Ila has been my favorite whisky forever, so I'm going to have to do a side by side comparison. Frankly, I'm worried for Caol Ila's status. read more

Tastings are held from 12-4- you can just walk in! They are located in an industrial building and their entrance is on the left side of the building. The tasting room is small and a little cavernous, which makes it hard to hear. We were immediately sat down and Nicholas had us try a variety of whiskys! He is super knowledgeable, attentive, funny, and friendly- he made our experience very memorable! We ended up buying 2 whiskys and got a recommendation for dinner as well! They let us keep our glasses. We highly recommend the California whisky (the first one we had) and the STR (exceptional). Thank you so much Nicholas for a wonderful time! I'm not sure how much the tasting was, but we sure spent money on our great bottle purchases. read more

Lovely local whisky distillery. Very nice staff. Great to try their whiskys, which remind me very much of Scotch whiskys. They have both peaty and non-peaty expressions. Any of their labels that say "STR" are non-peaty whiskys. I recommend starting there if you're new to whiskys. read more

The tasting was awesome! Jean talked us through the different types of whiskey and was so funny and personable, it made the whole experience a 10/10. $20 for 4 tastings.. maybe .. maybe a little $$$ but well worth it. Their first tasting and last two are the best, atleast for my pallet. Staff is very knowledgeable and will walk you through flavors profiles if you are new to whisky. Ambience is very casual and with all the barrels around very distillery feeling, perfect to hang out and relax your buddies. I've been following 10th Street Distillery since 2020 and always keep (at least) a few bottles of theirs on the shelf. Their selection is really great for all levels of enthusiasm. The lineup is highly rated for a darn good reason, and being a member really pays off, their new releases are soooo good! I'm actively clearing off my shelf of other brands to make rom for more 10th Steet Distillery bottles. Jean, Laura (and the rest of the team) are very friendly and welcoming. Especially for beginners, the explanations for a tasting session are very well put and leaves you more and more excited for the next dram! Even if you're an a moderate enthusiast to even a connoisseur, the conversations and whiskeys are sure to be a huge hit. The new tasting room is a nice industrial vibe and you're right next to the barrels, which is a really cool touch (you're right where the magic happens)! I cannot recommend this distillery enough. Between the staff, the environment, and of course, the outstanding whiskey lineup, this is my favorite place to go for a quality dram. Oh! And these bottles make great gifts! I was able to surprise my father with a bottle and he's asked to keep gifting more bottles every year and is even finding more holidays as an excuse for me to gift him even more! I know this review is getting long, but I can't post this review without mentioning the following: Do you like peated whiskeys? With the most sincerity I can convey via text, 10th Street Distillery's peated whiskeys are so incredibly well balanced. Several bottles are more peat forward, but still leave room for the rest of the profile without dominating the palate. Other bottles take a more subtle approach (which are my favorites), so just enough smoke to be noticeable, but not overpowering. This balance is really rare. Most peated whiskeys out there slap you in the face with the beloved moss itself, so finding something that has such a thoughtful balance is refreshing and reflects the artful technique of the distillers. I found 10th St. through a Facebook post in March 2021. Stopped by and picked up my order of an STR and a tasting kit, as I am not a peated-scotch whiskey guy. Went through the virtual tasting/pairing, and boy, was I wrong about my tastes. I immediately became a great fan of the peated cask-strengths, particularly (now) the just-released Wine Cask finished, the now-unavailable Cask 66, and my everyday go-to, the California Coast. CA Coast is an absolute bargain priced dram that can be drunk day after day after day without getting tired of it. The others (Port Cask (sold out), Wine Cask, numbered cask) are a bit pricier (but still WAY reasonable even with shipping) so I save them for more celebratory moments. But the TASTE - ah, the taste. The peat here is way different from those used in the bottles coming from Scotland. It's not Islay (which has more iodine), not Highland (again - those were never my favorites; I am Speyside/sherry cask). But 10th St. has added a new, fabulous rung to my drinking ladder. Will need to try out the new Cask 169!! As far as I've been able to tell, they are the only Scotch-style whiskey being produced in California, maybe in the US. Yay for a new entry into the realm. read more
