Major regrets because the food was incredibly mediocre. This was dinner. I ordered french onion soup (meh), fries (good), and the salmon dish (absolutely terrible). The salmon was supposed to be grilled and the scallops were supposed to be seared, but it all just tasted flavorless and cold. The next morning we were desperate for breakfast, so we willingly came back to Walt's Cafe. Dumb of us, I know. Luckily, the breakfast was much better, compared to the dinner the night prior. Still expensive and small portioned, but tasty enough for the convenience. Out of convenience, I would come back for the breakfast, but not the dinner menu.

The pizza was thin crust and crispy. It was loaded with toppings (tomatoes, green peppers, onions, pineapple, ham, and cheese) and shaped like Mickey's head. The Mickey Sushi was also shaped like a mouse head. It was sushi rice and tobiko. I liked the fried chicken wings the best. It was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. When you're done eating, you just leave it on the table. The workers will come around and clear it.

Otherwise the selection is limited and somewhat lacking in character. It's a buffet; what else can you really ask for, I guess. Just know your admittance fee is mainly to cover the quantity of food rather than the quality of it. Oh and the view. Yeah, the view is nice. Service is nice and unobtrusive. The "explorer" theme was throughout the entire hotel - even down to the elevators (which made it look like you were in a hot air balloon). When you arrive, they are extremely efficient in immediately collecting your baggage and whisking it away. We checked in early and were told that we would be notified when our room was ready - HOWEVER, if we wanted to pay extra to upgrade our room, they could immediately provide a room. We declined and opted to explore the property and the other Disney hotels. When we returned, there were several families camped out in the lobby waiting for their room. When it came close to check in time, I followed up with the front desk and they were able to give us a room. Our luggage was delivered shortly after. The room was quite spacious and the theming in the room was quite clever and tastefully done. It had all the amenities you would expect - coffeemaker, robe, slippers and various charging cables. They provide shuttle service to the park, where you can also take the MTR other destinations. We did not eat at the hotel, so I can't comment on the restaurants on the premises. I had booked online through the Hong Kong Disneyland website and forgot that It had said, "Book your hotel stay online to receive exclusive privileges-room upgrade and complimentary drink." We did not get that room upgrade (which would have saved us from waiting hours for our room) or that complimentary drink. If you book online, please make sure that they honor this. If we had been spared the wait (or at least texted when a room was available), I would have given Disney Explorers Lodge five stars.

This review is not for the faint of heart. I'll dive right into the deets, but before we start, I'll quote the warning my parents received before the airing of "Thriller" at the "Majestic Crest Theatre" on Westwood Blvd. "If you have any children attending with you under the age of 13, you may want to escort them to the lobby at this time." My initial impression for my experience at the property was a one star review. I know! That's crazy! It's blaspheme! It's pure heresy to depict my beloved Disney brand in a negative light. Like a Yelp Tinker Bell, I wish I could just sprinkle fairy dust on my initial impression of The Disney Explorers Lodge in Hong Kong. And just so it's clear, this is only a review of the Hotel and not the Park! In fact the park was totes fab! Like it was the bees knees or the cats meow! Upon arriving at the property at about the worst possible hour on the worst possible day of the year, we were greeted with an enormous line. I get it, I get it. What else would I expect on a day like this day! Actually we were waiting in 2 lines. My initial inner monologue was like "There has to be a better system in place." My family and I love and adore the Disney brand. But even on a holiday, there has to be a better or more prepared reaction to arriving guests. Yes, even if Half of Honk Kong arrives at the same time on the same day! One line was for keys and one for guests checking in. We were a bit confused by the situation. Maybe I'm a novice, but there's should be some hosts or Cast Members greeting guests with a smile and maybe some directions or maybe a cup of water and high five from Explorer Goofy! In any case, it took about an hour to get to the front of the lines. And being the sharp detective that I am, we figured out that the longer line was for guest who had checked in earlier and didn't have a room assigned to them yet! No, but really, someone should like be directing people to the right place. Like for serious! Once we had our room assigned, we could start enjoying the grounds. The property is the newest at HKD and as the title implies it has a world explorer meets Disney kinda vibe. There's a couple of themed gift shops, a terrific pool area and a few food options that I'll get into later. The elevator that took us up had a hot air ballon inspired motif and this might be the only place in the world where that's both acceptable and to be expected. We stepped into the room and the first thing I noted was that the hardwood area near the front looked yucky! There were definitely stains or goop stuck on the floor. Maybe there was an altercation between a couple ducks before we got in or something like that. I'm not sure, but it looked unpleasant to me. Next item, after putting our stuff down, we found what seemed to be a hair by the folded towel in front of our shower area. I can deduce that it was not my hair or my sons hair as he has little of it by choice and I have less than that by the hands of time and old age. In didn't match anyone in our party in fact. Is that the end of the world? No, it's not. But it is a little gross, you follow? Fortunately, the free Wi-Fi kicked in so daddy could get a dose of zone out time on the Webernet. Three free agents later in Fantasy Baseball and some Rotoworld, I was a new man ready enjoy the fun beyond the walls. I really was expecting more to go wrong, but after my nightmarish check in process and finding my room to be in less than tip top shape, everything else seemed to correct itself back to the Disney standard I expect. The grounds were fun to walk through and while it's a fairly new property, there were not tons of thing to do. All the restaurants, shops and activity areas looked clean and were staffed with friendly and helpful people. While it may not be normal to buy a $7 hot chocolate anywhere else, my onsite hot chocalate was served with ice cream, chocolate cereal and chocolate mouse ears that might be affiliated with a certain icon. In fact our pizza was delicious and came with corn soup and the creamy pasta was also tasty and can you guess? It came with a side of corn soup! Point is, the food tasted good and the hotel, however unprepared for our arrival rush, still had something positive to offer. I think the goof (get it) could have been avoided with better communication up front. And there could have been some compensation for the wait time. I'm not talking money, but maybe an extra character visit or some cheap swag. I love me some Disney swag! It really does make everything better! My overall impression was ok. From my perspective, there is room for improvement. I enjoyed the perks or staying at a HKG hotel, but a more thorough room inspection would have made all the difference in the world.
