Durian mousse
Peter L.

My must stop every time I come to HK, also helps it's close to Sister Wah, my other must stops. Got the durian mousse dessert: absolutely fantastic even though I am not a big durian fan. It's served with a healthy scoop of fresh durian. The mousse was smooth with relatively subtle durian flavors

The indisputable smell of durian greeted me as I stood in front of Auntie Sweet (甜姨姨) on Christmas Day. Having just returned from Penang, Malaysia with my fill of durian flavored ice cream (which was definitely an acquired taste), I wasn't too keen on having anything durian-related. If you love durian desserts, you've come to the right place. But fear not, if durian isn't your thing, there are other dessert options on the menu! My friend and I didn't wait long and were seated right away, surprisingly behind his childhood friends! What a small world! I ordered the "Coconut Paradise" (after reading the excellent Yelp reviews) while he ordered the Mango Pomelo Sago (楊枝甘露) - our favorite traditional Chinese dessert. Whenever its available, I like to order 楊枝甘露, which I consider to be a benchmark on how good a Chinese dessert place is. That and red bean soup (红豆沙). The "Coconut Paradise" arrived first, looking slight less than what the menu photo showed. I was a bit apprehensive, but you can't judge a dish by its appearance (some exceptions can be made elsewhere). The coconut flavor was very refreshing, with accompanying the chunks of fruit and jelly inside the bowl. The Mango Pomelo Sago (Yeung Ji Gum Lo) arrived next and the first thing I noticed was the very dark, almost-artificially orange color of the mango dessert. I was surprised to see a huge piece of mango on top, as it's usually in smaller pieces at other places. The mango soup was VERY thick and goopy... a disappointment to say the least.. and too sweet. If I ever develop the palate for durian desserts, I'd be willing to give Auntie Sweet another try. Otherwise, you'll find me at Cong Sao for their Mango Pomelo Sago Tofu Fa.

This place is delicious! We were in the neighborhood after finishing lunch and this was the perfect treat. We tried the Durian Lover and Coconut Paradise and both were amazing. The durian was fresh and the coconut dessert was very refreshing. There's a lot of options including pudding, ice cream, bean curd and other stuff so if I have another oppurunity I would come back and try those. The Recommendation: If you like Chinese desserts than you will definitely like this place! The durian is a must try when you are here.

For you durian lovers, I'm told this is the place to go. Being indifferent about durian myself, I found this place pretty good and their durian acceptable. This place was a pretty decent dessert place that was refreshing after a meal. The place is English friendly too. We ordered the Bean Curd Puree with Mango and Sago (3/5), the Taiwanese style dessert (4/5), and something called Durian Lover. I won't rate the Durian Lovers dessert myself but my friends who like durian gave it a "5/5, must come back".

Auntie Sweet is a traditional Chinese dessert place. They have all your typical Chinese desserts but they are most popular with their Tofu Pudding and Bean Curd (topped by frozen yogurt). If you come during after-dinner hours, you're almost guaranteed to have a long wait if you're in a large party. However if you're only here for a table of two, the quite is usually quite short! Dont let the long lines scare you, just go up and ask for a number. The store isnt large but it isnt small. Its not a place where you eat and relax and sit with friends. You kind of just go in eat and leave. The tables are cramped together and its all stool seating; meaning its not very comfortable. But what keeps so many people from coming back here? Easy answer; their desserts! Like most Chinese dessert places, most recommendations are Durian-related. However its not for everyone. I've tried a variety of their dishes here and most are quite good. I really dont think you can go wrong regardless of what you order. If you're not sure the staff is pretty helpful in explaining the dishes. Most recently tried: Strawberry bean curd topped by frozen yogurt, jelly, and dried strawberries - Delicious! Not too sweet and silky smooth bean curd. We opted for dried strawberries which was a quite nice addition. Tong Yuen (glutenous rice balls), half filled with sesame and half with peanut butter & chocolate - The peanut/chocolate filled ones had much stronger flavor, overpowering the sesame rice balls, and making the sesame taste bland. Not a good combo in my opinion. I suggest get one or the other, not mixed! The soup wasn't too sweet, and it had a large piece of ginger in it. Traditional Green Bean dessert - Not overly sweet, and beans were still intact (meaning not overly cooked and mushy). Fantastic if you love this traditional dessert. There are many other dessert places nearby, but Auntie Sweet is definitely worth the wait if you're a dessert lover. Dont forget, its Cash Only!

Coconut paradise $32

A popular family run dessert cafe in Tin Hau near Causeway Bay known for their durian and mango desserts. The menu has English names of the desserts but does not list the ingredients so you have to rely on the photos for an idea of what to expect. Being a big fan of coconut desserts I opted for the 'coconut paradise' ($32). This turned out to be a very good choice! In addition to fresh mango, coconut jelly and basil seeds with coconut soy milk which I could see from the photo in the menu; the dessert contained cubes of matcha jelly & beancurd! I enjoyed the dessert so much that I decided to return for a 2nd time during my very brief visit to HK. I rarely go back to the same place so frequently as I usually like to try new places but there is good reason why Auntie sweet is always so packed with locals in the evening. They have a loyal following for their tasty freshly prepared desserts using good quality ingredients at very low prices. The 2nd time I was lucky enough to get a table as I entered somebody just left and asked the owner for recommendations. I chose the green tea bean curd paste with sago & soy milk ice cream ($30). I found this dessert slightly too bland for me so ordered the coconut paradise dessert yet again as well. Even though they were so busy the staff were friendly and helpful. The owner was very patient in going through the menu providing recommendations and assurance that the shop does not use any nuts in their desserts.

I am never too fond of Chinese dessert. I have never the urge to want it. But after trying that black sesame tofu sago, I thought I have never tried any dessert that tasted so good. No wonder that it is their award winning item. After that dessert, my with and I ordered a few or round of desserts and it could still not fulfill our inner urge to want more. I started to wonder if we were drugged or if the food has addictive ingredient added in it. What haunted me is that the place does not open until 3pm. We went there in the morning for a second visit but they were closed.... I want more.

My favorite place for Hong Kong dessert! I come here probably a little too much, and any time…read morefriends and family visit Hong Kong, I always make an excuse to bring them here! Don't let the giant queue scare you, and yes there is almost always a queue. Despite that, it moves fairly fast. Its definitely not a place where you sit and chat with your friends. They expect you to sit down, order right away, eat it, and leave right away. But I guess many popular places are like that around Hong Kong.. Seating-wise its very cramp here. You'll be sitting basically elbow to elbow with strangers next and behind you. But that doesn't matter because their desserts are so wonderful! Some of my favorites are the tong yuen (glutinous rice balls) that come come with peanut sauce. The one that comes in the ginger soup is good too (for this dish, the balls have fillings inside, such as sesame or peanut sauce). Another good one is their sorbets, which are perfect for a hot day.

Heyyyy, do you like durian? Or even want to give it a shot despite the crazy smell it may emit or…read morethe odd taste it might exude? I believe one of the ways to try durian without having to be afraid of it is by tasting it through the various dessert dishes here at this cute little place. Having no idea that this place existed, I was pretty thankful to my new local friend who suggested this place. It's located in a small little street, similar to an alley way, and by the time you get near it, you'll definitely see a long line of people waiting to get in. The wait itself isn't that bad. Most people just come here to eat dessert and leave right after. Once seated, my friends and I spent some time browsing through the extensive dessert menu and settled on trying the durian with crystal seeds (one of the many popular dishes) and watermelon and lychee with crystal seeds. In summary, the watermelon and lychee were ok. The watermelon ended up being too watery for my taste and the lychee wasn't too memorable. Both tasted decent but definitely not a must try. For the durian, this was surprisingly good! I am normally not a durian fan (the stench gets to me sometime) but here, you couldn't really smell too much of the durian in the dish. The taste of durian was also soften quite a bit, making this dish a bit more doable for those who do not like durian. I found this dish to be pretty tasty and not too sweet and it was unique to eat it with the crystal seeds. Overall, this is a great spot to stop by for desserts. If you're not a fan of durian but can tolerate the smell of it wafting through the restaurant, this place is great to try other HK desserts at an affordable price.

Would highly recommend. Matcha roll didn't have as much flavor as ice cream but still decent. Very efficiently run and quick to receive ice cream after you order. There was a time when soft serve became all the rage, and Via Tokyo was there through it all. While I miss the TST location (#1), this Causeway Bay version has a bit of seating and all the Japanese-inspired vibes one can ask for. Like most HK shops, the seating is tight and limited. There are wall-facing counter spots, along with a handful of tables for small groups. The wait is likely during the hot weather days (#2), but the turnover is quick since ice cream is consumed and melts quickly. The staff is young and friendly, doing their best to keep the ice cream coming while helping folks navigate the seating. Cones and cups range for roughly $40-45. The Hokkaido milk is my absolute favorite, smooth and creamy, and reminiscent of some of the ones I've had from Japan. Houjicha and matcha are the more popular items here, which take up a majority of the orders and is especially pretty when made into a bowl with fruits and other sweets. The moment of food photography won't last long, as the ice cream will begin to melt in less than a minute. HK dessert options are always revered. Thus, so is Via Tokyo and I hope they manage to stick around as long as possible. They take Alipay, Octopus, and of course, cash. ____________ (#1) Forever immortalized: https://www.yelp.com/biz/via-tokyo-香港-2?hrid=jtpxWsnvwDSZgQu9s6kF5g (#2) Which is often.
