Fantastic dessert spot in causeway bay (CWB). As good as I remembered 4 years ago. Their matcha desserts have one of the richest matcha flavors I ever tasted. They don't use too much sugar so none of their desserts are overly sweet or dense. They also serve an interesting twist of the basque cheesecake where the bottom layer was a mochi. The menu is quite extensive and they do many variations so this is a great dessert spot for all types of groups.
I have walked past Via Tokyo many times and seen the long line that snakes around back towards Mammy Pancake. Is it worth the wait? I decided to try it out for once. Came here after dinner, around 10pm, and there was already a line. Perhaps shorter than the afternoon lines, but a line nevertheless. How long did we wait? I'd say about 25 minutes. Was it worth it? If you were waiting in line for that long already, might as well sit. Otherwise, I think I'd do takeout next time. There is a minimum charge of one dessert per person. Not very diet-friendly if the one dessert you want to get is the 3 flavor waffle basket, which comes in at HK$65. For one person?! Quite steep... perfect for sharing but seems like their more focused on how to get them moniez. After trying Matcha ice cream at iCremeria and Kyo Hayashiya, I've realized that I don't really like the taste of Matcha ice cream / soft serve. Perhaps it's not strong enough. Hojicha, however, is my calling - the tea strength is just perfect, it has the balanced combination of sweetness from the milky soft serve and bitterness from the Hojicha flavor. I found the serving size to be too large... how does one finish that much ice cream?!
Another on my recommended list i wanted to try out in HK. I loveeee matcha and i saw amazing reviews but i wasn't as wowed as i was hoping but then again we only tried one dessert because we were so full from food adventures piling up from that week haha. Ordered the vanilla matcha swirl which was good a little bit too much matcha taste for my liking, a tad strong but it went well with the vanilla. I feel like i've had better. Butttt i will say that the desserts looked super cute from other ppl's i wish i got a pic of theirs not to be creepy tho. Haha but the place was pretty small and we decided to wait for a spot but it was pretty cramped. The waiter was somewhat helpful when we asked for a recommendation but he seemed a bit annoyed or not as happy that day.
I'm in loveee. Rich matcha flavor with delicious mochi and azuki paste to accompany it. I would recommend getting a swirl of flavors (e.g. Matcha and vanilla swirl) as the matcha by itself is a bit overpowering. You can get most of the choices in a cup or a cone. I got a cone for aesthetic reasons... there is also a to-go option where you won't have to wait for seating but you can only get a cone.
Matcha Heaven! Via Tokyo can be super busy with long queue for eating in as the restaurant itself is really small. I suggest if the line is ridiculously long, just order take out. Same yummy sweet without the wait! Green Matcha Ice Cream with Shiratama 白玉 and Red Bean Matcha Mille - Feuille Both were deliciously good. Love that the matcha flavour really come out without being too bitter or sweet! Check their Facebook page for new flavour: Gyokuro Genmaicha Soft Cream (玉露玄米茶) and Black Sesame Cream Parfait just sounds so amazing!
Small little place with two tall tables and one regular table crowding with 6-8 chairs (and one hanging egg chair!) I had to check this place out as it was voted for awards as displayed in their store. I got #31 to try. It took a while to come out-- 15 minutes? The mixed vanilla/matcha soft-serve was nice although by the time it came out it was starting to melt already. The mochi and red bean were good paired with the soft-serve. But... I don't get the hype. It wasn't as memorable as other desserts I've had.
First impression of this place was "small," but the ratings seemed promising so we decided to try it out. Not sure whether this place was built for slim customers, but the chairs were small and uncomfortable. Honestly, what is this? A doll house? Fortunately for me, I was able to fit, but my poor friend at 6'2 had much trouble balancing on 1 asscheek, let alone fit 2 into that seat-- Moaar chairs, please! While the store's capacity was only at 4 tables (indicating not busy), the Americano was received at around 8 minutes (decent), the ice cream took literally 23 minutes! All the food handler needed to do was to pull the softserve lever and TADA! She only had 1 job...1 job! Speculating they were milking a live cow out back and were amidst making the freshest softserve in Hong Kong; highly doubtful. OR, she was still gossiping with the other food handler, because there isn't any other valid reason for the delay. [Ok but pricey] Mochi Matcha Soft Cream $44 HKD Soft serve was creamy and had ample amount of matcha flavour. The mochi was tasteless balls of gluten; nothing special. Overall I'd say it's scores 6.5/10 on the scale because it's mediocrity does not warrant it's price. [NOT TASTY] Americano $22 HKD Highly not recommended. It was sour to the core and left brewing for quite some time. Proper Americano CANNOT be made in a filter drip machine and MUST be made with fresh ground coffee. Best ratio is 3-5 oz water to a double shot of espresso. On their FB page, it says "...Via Tokyo also serves fantastic coffee!" I full wholeheartedly disagree with that notion. Even if it was not from a drip machine, it was definitely brewed half-assed with an intention thinking that customers would not be able to tell good from bad coffee, because it tasted as awful as mop water--just stick to soft serve for now. Don't bother deviating--0/10 Expectations of this place dropping really fast. How fast? Think of youth spiralling down exponentially; really fast! Next time will probably go to City Super--just as good and cost a bit less (unless inflation's driven prices up since I've had it 3 years ago).
I had a really hard time finding this place, but I'm glad I didn't give up. They serve the best japanese style soft serve match green tea icecream. They also have black sesame and vanilla, but matcha is the best. The only disappointment I have is the long wait for a table. They are in one of the busiest parts of town, so I was not able to get a table. I had to stand outside and quickly eat my icecream because it was so hot. But in the end it was still worth the trouble.
I've really been digging soft serve ice cream lately, and if it's matcha flavoured, even better! Via Tokyo makes my dreams come true with their strongly flavoured, not-at-all-sweet matcha soft serve. I was easily able to grab a seat inside on a weekday afternoon and savour the #16: Shiratama Azuki Matcha soft cream, which is a generous amount of soft serve with some jellies and red bean. If there's one thing they can improve on, it's a bigger menu (physically.) I'm near-sighted, but I could imagine the menu would be a bit difficult for some people to read with it's really small print. Also, they could be a little more descriptive of each dessert. Everything has a name, but they don't go into detail of what kind of jellies or ingredients are included.
I came here twice during my week-long stay in HK and I will most definitely have to go back many more times before I will be satisfied with trying all the matcha gems Via Tokyo. [TL;DR] I am stingy with giving 5-star ratings, but everything is on point--the superb matcha quality, the creative and broad menu items, the whimsical and hip ambiance, the pure matcha / 抹茶 heaven in it all. [THE DRANKS] The matcha latte was probably the most commonplace, but it was good and I got the adorable latte art of a bear. I liked the iced hojicha latte and although the plastic to-go cup presentation was not the most photogenic, the black straw made up for it somewhat. [THE BITES] The matcha-uji ice cream swirl in the waffle cone is so perfect, it looks like it was taken directly out of a cartoon. Yes it is hollow, as revealed by one of my pictures, but the serving is more than enough to satisfy your matcha and sweet tooth cravings. There are so many variations on the matcha soft serve sundae--difficult for indecisive people like me but a boon for picky eaters. I settled on a matcha soft serve with red bean sauce, soybean powder crumble, and mochi. Flavor and texture explosion! Notably, the match a soft serve is probably the very best I've had; the matcha taste is strong as you can tell from the dark green hue. It comes on a cute wooden tray and a cup of honey, which is definitely not needed but it looks nice. They also offer interesting matcha baked goods: uji matcha mille feuille, hojicha cheesecake, matcha eclair. Need I write any more o.O [THE MISC] - The location is a bit confusing because of the windy roads in the area, but if you track down the address it's not too random. - It's reasonably priced, especially since most of the food and drinks are quite filling, so I recommend bringing a stomach with space and/or sharing unless you have an insatiable matcha monster appetite. - The highlight of the decor is a swinging basket chair. It's quite popular and usually taken, and if there are kids you will feel obligated to give it up to the 小朋友.
You can spot this place as you are approaching by the line of people waiting outside for a seat. There are about 15 seats inside, but the good thing is that it generally doesn't take too long. We tried the green tea soft serve and the royal milk tea parfait. The green tea was quite smooth, but personally, I wish that there was a bit more milk tea flavor. I really love the royal milk tea parfait as it had a yummy cookie on top, espresso jelly at the bottom. Something I would definitely return for! Definitely plus that the desserts are very pretty.
Wowowowow this place is so good. First time, I got the matcha green tea swirled with the Hokkaido milk. I would pass on the Hokkaido milk (it was fine, just not as good/special as the matcha). The matcha flavor was awesome. I also tried my friend's sesame flavor and loved it. So I came back another day for a full cone of sesame. The ice cream here is heavy, and it would be nice to split with someone, but it's also so good that nobody is going to complain about eating a whole cone by themselves. It only makes sense that Hong Kong's first and most popular location of Via Tokyo, also happens to be it's last remaining one. There was a time when soft serve became all the rage, and Via Tokyo was there through it all. While I miss the TST location (#1), this Causeway Bay version has a bit of seating and all the Japanese-inspired vibes one can ask for. Like most HK shops, the seating is tight and limited. There are wall-facing counter spots, along with a handful of tables for small groups. The wait is likely during the hot weather days (#2), but the turnover is quick since ice cream is consumed and melts quickly. The staff is young and friendly, doing their best to keep the ice cream coming while helping folks navigate the seating. Cones and cups range for roughly $40-45. The Hokkaido milk is my absolute favorite, smooth and creamy, and reminiscent of some of the ones I've had from Japan. Houjicha and matcha are the more popular items here, which take up a majority of the orders and is especially pretty when made into a bowl with fruits and other sweets. The moment of food photography won't last long, as the ice cream will begin to melt in less than a minute. HK dessert options are always revered. Thus, so is Via Tokyo and I hope they manage to stick around as long as possible. Via Tokyo has great matcha! They don't have much seating inside so expect to wait for a bit outside. Don't think takeout is an option. Small interior. Matcha ice cream is rich and creamy! Would highly recommend. Matcha roll didn't have as much flavor as ice cream but still decent. Very efficiently run and quick to receive ice cream after you order. Note that you do need to go up to the counter and order, they won't come to you to take your order but will bring your food out. read more

Popular place to go for matcha, hojicha or Hokkaido milk soft serve sundaes. They have a lot of different combinations with mochi, red bean, etc. We got the mixed milk/matcha soft serve with mochi, warabi and hojicha drink with black sugar and boba. The matcha flavor was super authentic and the mochi was tasty. The milk flavors were a bit dominated by the mochi so would get that alone if you are really craving it. The bubble tea was fine, but on the sweeter side. $30 min/person read more

I think this was the best green tea ice cream ever. And I don't even like green tea ice cream at all! This place was fairly close to Times Square so the walk wasn't too far at all. We finally made it, we stood in line a waited to order. After 20 minutes over heard that the queue is for eating in!! Okay seriously they need sign to let us first timers know! So I went inside to order and I loved the set up of the desserts! But I'm not gonna wait 30 minutes just so I can take a pic. When you order, make sure to get the mix cone! It's so plain and simple but perfect. The green tea and the original blend together so nicely! Even the cone was perfectly and almost tasted like a wafer. This place is good and perfect for anyone with or without a sweet tooth! read more

Small little shop with about 18 seats, we came around 2pm on a weekday, and luckily we had seats! There is a minimum order of $30 per person, and most of their selections are less than $60. So it wasn't really designed to share anything. There was about 3 items that was more than $60 so we decided to order one of those. We ordered the 3 flavour ice cream with mochi and red beans in a waffle cup. The ice cream flavour was matcha, earl grey (? Not sure but it was strong on tea flavour), and vanilla. The matcha was nice and not too bitter and not sweet. The perfect combination. The earl grey one was fragrant and strong, and not too sweet. The vanilla was creamy and the sweetest of them all. Mochi balls were nice and chewy, and the waffle bowl was crispy. Overall great atmosphere for stopping in for a quick treat. read more

Was craving for some houjicha so we went to Via Tokyo to satisfy our houjicha crave. The houjicha-cheese layer was thick, creamy and rich. Houjicha was on the mellow side, overshadowed by the intense cheese flavor, making the roasty and nutty caramel hint pretty subtle. The graham cracker base below added up some crunchiness to the layer above. Good that the cake wasn't too sweet but better share it with others! Hmmm, missing the houjicha soft serve now! Sometimes only soft serve itself is not enough, I mean come on bring me more matcha goodies! Among all the greens, Via Tokyo's matcha eclair always have our hearts. The choux was made to golden brown, and we absolutely love matcha cream! Rich, dense and smooth, it also came with a hint of bitterness from the matcha. Just as perfect as their soft serve! My friends and I first knew of Via Tokyo from seeing people upload Instagram pictures of their desserts there and gushing in their captions and hashtags about how good they are. Being matcha fanatics ourselves, we arranged a day to try it. The small shop occupies what previously was Yo-go, a frozen yogurt place, so if you're familiar with that it shouldn't be hard to find. (And if you're not, it's near Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay, opposite Regal Hotel and next to St Paul's Convent School). When we got there, there was a queue of about eight to ten people outside the shop (the shop itself is quite small - can't sit more than twenty people). We wanted to get the 'full experience' so we decided to wait it out rather than take away. We waited half an hour in the summer heat and when we finally got a seat, we each ordered their signature item - matcha soft serve - and our first bites in, we concluded that the wait was worth it. The ice cream had a strong, fragrant matcha taste compared to other green tea ice creams I've tried that basically are just vanilla ice cream with some semblance of a green tea taste. The texture was extremely smooth and melt-in-your-mouth, and the portion size was decent as well. It isn't overly sweet and actually has some bitter undertones, which I like because well, matcha isn't supposed to be sweet anyway. Since our first visit we've gone back countless times. Another favorite between my friends and I is the matcha latte, which the baristas will artistically adorn with latte art in the form of cartoons like Totoro and Patrick Star (off Spongebob Squarepants). If you're not a matcha fan, they have milk soft serve, which is really good as well. Recently they've added Houjicha specials to the menu and Houjicha soft serve and latte is also available. (Houjicha is another kind of Japanese green tea). I've not tried the latte myself, but the Houjicha soft serve is slightly sweeter than the matcha one, but equally as good. If you plan to go, prepare to line up for at least ten to thirty minutes. Of the over ten times I've been there, I think there's only been once that I didn't have to wait for a seat. While take away is a popular option because the shop really is quite small, I would advise you not to take away if you're not in a rush (or to come back another time and dine in when you have time to spare), because take away portions are significantly smaller than dining in and is still the same price. read more

If you are looking for a good soft serve, this is the place to go. However, if you are planning to spend a casual and chill afternoon, you may want to pick another place. Located in Causeway Bay, the centre of the city, Via Tokyo has become one of the most popular spots. The fact that it is opened for less than a year, Via Tokyo is doing a really good business. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of green tea but their green tea soft serve always makes me want to go back. Their soft serve is made with Hokkaido milk and fine green tea powder imported from Japan, providing a strong flavour and a silky texture. They can easily beat the other soft serves in Hong Kong with their consistency and good quality. I sometimes find their regular soft serve a tad too heavy, so I usually go with a green tea affogato, which you can have your soft serve with green tea latte. Recently, they launched a green tea smoothie with soft serve, almost a dream come true to me! My pick is the one with milk soft serve. The embrace of the luscious, velvety and milky soft serve goes perfectly with the chilly smoothies( or more like a slushie). You can't possibly miss it on a hot summer day! Since Via Tokyo is a hit in Causeway, it's no surprise to see people queuing outside the shop. However, considering there are only around 20 seats in the shop, getting takeout is probably the best choice! read more

My favourite place to get ice cream especially matcha ice cream! The matcha flavour is strong, just the way I like it. Consistency of the ice cream is perfect - not watery, not icy....just smooth! read more
Not having the patience to line up for ice cream, it's actually my first time trying the ice cream here. It was an early evening on a Thursday where we found no queue outside the store (finally!). Without a thought we went in and ordered a simple green tea ice cream. And, it was GOOD. Rich in green tea taste with an aftertaste. Very good indeed, no wonder it's so popular. read more

Love their soft serve here! I think they started the ice cream craze in CWB. There are so many desserts shop now. Really enjoyed their green tea, hojicha, and genmaicha flavors. They have also expanded their offerings to other types of green tea desserts since (e.g. rolls, eclairs, etc.) I find myself always stopping by for an ice cream cone whenever I am in the area! read more

Softserve icecream here is creamy and milky, not melting too fast! Houjicha is what I like most here. Always has a long queue tho. read more
