The shop is rather small even though it spans the width of two commercial spaces with bread and cake loaves to the left and refrigerated cakes and pastries to the right. Having visited this shop numerous times in the past decade, the signs of popularity has not wane. The prices are also very reasonable and the quality of the goods are always up to par. Remember to bring your own bag for all the goods you buy if you don't want to pay for a bag. The staff are very quick to ring customers up and get them on their way. A few favorite items that are worth writing home about include their raisin bread and buns, salted egg yolk Swiss roll, paper wrapped sponge cake, and mont blanc tarts. Cakes are soft and spongy, bread is soft and tasty, and the pastries are not too sweet. So wonderful for any time of day. However, if you get there too early or late you may miss out on some items as they either haven't arrived from the off site bakery or have already sold out for the day.

I find it less and less on the streets where grandmas and grandpas or aunties and uncles used to sell traditional treats like black sesame jelly rolls (film rolls), red bean sweet rice cakes in white or brown sugar (put chai ko), fresh mango mochi (lo mai chee), and even coconut wrap with candy (tong chung beng). Lam Kee Snacks also has a stall in Central (inside of Central Market), so whichever location you are closer to I recommend visiting. The stall isn't very big, and there is no seating around the stall, meaning you have to take everything to go. The snacks are very tasty and reminds me of all things good. While they may not be completely the taste of childhood, it is extremely close. I appreciate that they offer several types of nostalgic treats and I can get them in one go if I want to. The staff have always been friendly and efficient. My absolute favorites from Lam Kee Snacks are their Black Sesame Jelly Rolls, Dragon Beard Candy, and Mango Mochi. I really hope this place stays and that more people get to enjoy these traditional treats.

The staff are friendly and efficient while juggling both front end and kitchen area as one assists customers and the other prepares the food items. It is somewhat confusing that there are actually two separate counters, onefacing left and one facing right inside of Yata. Apparently the one on the right side only services guests looking to purchase cakes. The one facing the left only services guests looking to purchase everything else (drinks, ice cream, waffles). Since I wanted to try a variety of their goods, I went to buy a cheesecake slice first and it was placed inside a paper bag for to-go. I then made my way onto the left side of the shop and purchased waffles, which took about ten minutes to make and bag for to-go. They were also placed in a paper bag. Payment for both counters were easily made via Octopus, though they accept everything else too. Since there are no seats to enjoy these goods in the vicinity, the only way to devour them was to take it home or eat on-the-go. There is no central dining or food court space in this shopping centre. If you're in New Town Plaza it is easy to find Bakehouse essentially on the same floor as Uniqlo and McDonald's. The line to the right is for baked goods to-go while the line to the left is for dining in. The menu items sound great but on my visit I only had one goal, which was to try their viral Hong Kong egg tart. I bought one for carryout and ate it right outside the bake shop. Since the egg tart is known for their sourdough crust, I wasn't sure what exactly to expect. It was actually so amazing! The crust was not only buttery and flaky, it carried the caramelized, silky custard center well. The price for one is $14HKD. which I personally think is very worth it. It is not overpriced for the quality Bakehouse delivers and definitely way better than some other fusion bakeries in Hong Kong. So if you want something different away from the traditional and classic egg tart, this will do! The staff speak fluent English and Cantonese as I used both to test their competency. The bakery does not have any interior space for dining nor standing space other than the counter. The line moves quite fast as one person takes your order while you move thru the line at the case and another person checks you out. There were many tourists at this location due to the popularity of attractions in Tsim Sha Tsui and many standing in front of the bakery to get selfie. If you're at another Hashtag B, I think it would be a bit less crowded? The Hashtag B tart was the only item I had tried and it was a clear winner in my book. It is known for its flower-shaped napoleon style tart and the crust was buttery, flaky, and crisp while the interior was custard. Very well crafted and I enjoyed the crunch from the caramelization. The tart base remained crisp throughout, unlike other tarts I've devoured at other well known bakeries. The price for one of these egg tarts is incredibly reasonable so you might want to get more to share or for later (the tart stays as good as when you get it).

The good news is that you can purchase these items and enjoy them from the comfort of home as there are many items that are packaged and boxed for later use for self or as a gift. I was only able to devour the black sesame soft serve in their signature cone on this recent visit and will definitely come back to try the black sesame jelly rolls (film rolls) and sweet soup. You'll be sitting basically elbow to elbow with strangers next and behind you. But that doesn't matter because their desserts are so wonderful! Some of my favorites are the tong yuen (glutinous rice balls) that come come with peanut sauce. The one that comes in the ginger soup is good too (for this dish, the balls have fillings inside, such as sesame or peanut sauce). Another good one is their sorbets, which are perfect for a hot day.

In summary, the watermelon and lychee were ok. The watermelon ended up being too watery for my taste and the lychee wasn't too memorable. Both tasted decent but definitely not a must try. For the durian, this was surprisingly good! I am normally not a durian fan (the stench gets to me sometime) but here, you couldn't really smell too much of the durian in the dish. The taste of durian was also soften quite a bit, making this dish a bit more doable for those who do not like durian. I found this dish to be pretty tasty and not too sweet and it was unique to eat it with the crystal seeds. Overall, this is a great spot to stop by for desserts. If you're not a fan of durian but can tolerate the smell of it wafting through the restaurant, this place is great to try other HK desserts at an affordable price.
