During lunch you have the choice of sets and a la carte. The sets are great value for money, they include an appetizer and a drink. A la carte include some basic pasta dishes which are done well. Worth mentioning are their tandoori dishes, they have a tandoori oven specially for that it's done by an Indian chef. Great quality. This place is good for lunch only.

Once you've picked your selection, the fishermen bring it to the chef and cook it the way you want it to be cooked. Being that I ate with family, 8 of us chose a package that came with the selection of the seafood and certain ways to cook it. For example, our package selection can with a seafood cooked with certain noodles, and some seafood seasoned and paired a certain way with vegetables. While this place is VERY expensive, it was well worth the money to try this place at least once on your trip to Hong Kong. The dishes were cooked to perfection. I've never had seafood that big cooked in so many different ways before! Being a Hong Kong native, it's foods like this that bring back memories of growing up in Hong Kong and what REAL seafood should taste like. The bill in total, for 8 people and the choice of your own seafood cost over 5,000HKD, which is equivalent to about $700USD. I've NEVER spent this much on food alone and if you think about it, it really isn't so bad if you're splitting it between 8 people. Once we sat down, in come two guys in suits, I guess you can call them managers, giving us numerous recommendations. It was fine at first because we needed some recommendations given it's vast menu. However, the recommendations would not stop, it was constant hounding. One of them gave legitimate recommendations, while the other try to sell us on the most expensive items on the menu. We ended up ordering these special deep-fried shrimp, beef on veggies, salted fish fried rice, and fried bean curds. The shrimp was scrumptious and by far one of the best shrimp I've ever tasted, it was also grossly overpriced at about $50 USD, or $400+ HKD. The beef on veggies was bad, the beef was not tender and tasted bland. The salted fish fried rice was meh, I've tasted better here in Boston. The salted fish that they used simply was not aromatic and did not have the distinct salted fish taste. The fried bean curd was very tasty, perfectly crispy on the outside with a hint of saltiness while super smooth and silky on the inside. The food was not Michelin star grade in my opinion. Here's the catch: the service was very annoying, the guy in suits essentially rushed us into ordering and would not stop bothering us even while we were eating. When the check came, he stood there the entire time awaiting my signature. It was by far the most uncomfortable restaurant experience I have endured in a very long time. In my 10 days in HK, I would have to say that this was my most dismal meal, ironic because it was also amongst the most expensive one. Meh.

While I've never seen cauliflower in a green curry--there were also string beans--it was certainly fine. But the other problem was green curry itself. It just didn't have a ton of flavor. Maybe they figured "white guy, let's make it super bland," but even if it's not spicy--and I told them medium was fine--it should still be flavorful. So even though everyone here was nice and the food was certainly reasonable in price, it's hard to say things were A-OK when this dish unfortunately was a bit lacking.

Also known as "Hing Gung" (慶功), it literally means to celebrate and to reward the hard work the crew put into the show. Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. The restaurant is hidden back in the corner of a maze like area known as Landmark near the Central MTR station. Once we reached the Landmark, we just stopped at an information desk to receive final directions. We arrived early for our reservation which originally was made for seats at the bar but at this earlier time they had a table free for us. The bar sitting is not like typical high top seating but rather a long table attached to a wall at normal table height. You and your guests will just be sitting beside one another rather than across a table and perhaps sitting next to a stranger. The staff there were super friendly and spoke very good English which helped us tremendously. After a warm welcome, we were quickly shown to our table and offered water to start. We saw all our favorite Thai dishes on the menu just like back home in the States. We started with fried spring rolls and a couple Tsingtao beers to take the edge off a long day of walking around Hong Kong. The spring rolls were on the skinny side but with seven of them on the plate and a lovely chili dipping sauce on the side they hit the spot. Served with the rolls were some fresh vegetables that we can never seem to get enough of when traveling far from home. For our next course, we went with Tom Yum soup another favorite of ours. I was a little hesitant at first to order it as it was priced at $20 USD which seemed high to me for a bowl of soup but it turns out to be a big bowl that is easily shared between two. It is served on a stand with a candle below to keep it warm and two smaller bowls with a ladle to serve it up. Our server poured our first bowls and ensured we each got one of the two huge shrimp (head and eyeballs included) along with plenty of our goodies. The soup was wonderful with a multitude of flavors. Easily the best Tom Yum we have ever experienced. It was quite spicy more so then we are used to having but still very enjoyable. For our last course, we selected Pad See Ew with pork and were pleasantly surprised to find more pork than noodles in the dish. This dish also can be shared for two if desired. Everything tasted very fresh with a wonderful sauce and at the perfect temperature. We passed on any dessert at this point but not for lack of options but rather room to put it. Overall, my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here at Mak Mak with friendly and helpful service at a very reasonable price. We hope to have an opportunity to come back and try some other dishes.

The food is not made in bulk and you can decide on the spice level of your food. Their larb is delicious, but spicy, so you'll want this option to decide on the spice level. The brunch itself is affordable (esp. for AYCE) and you can opt for a smaller portion so you can try different things and not waste food. Totally worth a try if you're in the mood for Thai food and want a good variety.
