Wah wah wah! Another hidden gem!…read more The food here is so good and there's quite a few unique dishes!! Seafood is very fresh and tasty. The deep fried tofu is bomb! Super silky and smooth, without a chewy skin. The salted egg yolk shrimps are coated evenly and the shells are edible! The mantis prawns are very juicy and fresh. I also loved the clams soup and the pork chops! Must haves: salted egg yolk shrimps, deep fried tofu, and mantis prawns. Prices are also very fair. Probably even cheaper than many other places that aren't as good! I saw a few michelin signs on the walls, but I'm not sure if it's referring to them or the alcohol they're promoting. But I do think their food is good enough to be Michelin!! It is quite a busy place so be sure to book a reservation!

Also known as "Hing Gung" (慶功), it literally means to celebrate and to reward the hard work the crew put into the show. Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. For a restaurant that is still crowded towards midnight, you know they must have done something right.

So interesting to visit the Wan Chai Market with Jacky from This Is Asia Tours…read more Wan Chai was established in the 1930s as a wet market, or a local market for fresh fish, fruits, vegetables and meat. Today, you can still choose from a wide variety of fresh fish or other seafood. That is fish that are alive in a small tank swimming and thrashing. You choose your fish, or other amphibian dinner choice, and they kill, skin and scale it for you to take home and cook. Can't get much fresher than that unless you caught it yourself. Apparently they used to have poultry as well in the past. Fears of avian flu have made that market offering virtually obsolete. The selection of baskets and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables was quite impressive. Rambutan. Longan. Durian. Cherries. Mangosteen. Water spinach. Choi sum. Grab some spices, too. There are also bakeries filled with egg tarts and pineapples buns (that don't have pineapple) and a shop that sells snake soup that does have snake. Did not sample that one. Shop like a local at the Wan Chai Wet Market.

Came here on a Saturday nite to meet up with some local friends for dinner. It was a good thing…read morethey made reservations cause the place was packed. However, if you hadn't made a reservation and couldn't get in, there's plenty of other restaurants in what is called food street with each one offering a patio as well. Since food street is like a wide alley that runs between all these buildings that house high-end boutiques on the ground floors, you would not be subjected to the noise and exhaust of HK traffic. The layout is quite casual, with a mix of couples and families. The menu is quite extensive with fresh oysters from different countries. We sampled two different varieties from Ireland. There's also a tapas page offering things from garlic shrimps to iberico ham. We ordered the foie gras sandwiched between toasts. It was quite good if a little rich. One of our friends had a soup of the day which was butter squash. It came with a piece of tomato-rubbed toast, Spanish style. He liked it. We also ordered a Caesar salad for two which was large enough for the four of us to sample. A solid salad but lacked a bit of dressing. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he brought out more dressing on the side. For our mains, my GF and one of our friends ordered ordered the Iberico pork chops grilled and served with roasted potatoes and half a head of roasted garlic. The two chops were juicy and tender with a hint of sweetness from the balsamic glaze. The chops were part of the daily special which I also ordered off. I had a pasta with prawns and scallops. The pasta was tasty with three large prawns. My only quibble would be that I wish there were more scallops as I only got two. Our other friend ordered off the menu and had a seafood stew that featured clams, mussels, scallops, and half a lobster. It was huge. Now I know where my scallops went! All in all, a nice meal in a nice setting without breaking the bank.

The directions to get to the boat where we would be eating was both vague and intriguing. The taxi / uber will drop you off at Typhoon Shelter Causeway. After you pass the neon sign and find bus stop 110, go towards the water. Where there's a dozen+ steps is where a boat will come to pick you up and take you to the boat where you will be eating. When we got there no one else was there but it got busier. If you book out the entire boat / have a large enough party...you will not have to share the boat. Amazing view of Victoria Bay and the neon lights and skyscrapers. Very little rockiness from the water. The most difficult part was using the bathroom & having to scoop water from the bay to force flush the toilet. My brother came over to make sure I didn't fall out of the window & my kids were laughing. 5/5 hilarious core moment 1) Steamed prawns and snails: prawns were perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned. Snails just seemed boiled and had no seasoning; pass. 2) Gizzards & cold chicken appetizer: tasty but nothing to write home to. 3) Roast Duck: Skin was not crisp but the flavor was there. 4) Garlic clams: savory, flavorful, tender and fresh! 5) Razor clams with glass noodles: loads of garlic, pre-scooped out clams and savory noodles. My favorite dish. 6) Chow mein: a wonderful surprise to what I thought would just be filler for the kids. So flavorful, generously portioned, and nice chewy noodles 7) Lobster & noodles: sauce translated to "cheesy" but did not taste like cheese, was a thick almost cream sauce. Came with cracker / claws which was great for the kids. Meaty lobster, perfectly cooked. 8) River shrimp: translates to "pee shrimp" and were cut down the middle to get the shrimp out. These were my husband's favorite. A mix of lobster x shrimp that was the size of my 10 y/o's face. 9) Garlic fried crab: crunchy garlic bits were the best, I had a hard time eating the crab even with the cracker / claws to help. 10/10 would recommend. One of a kind experience!!

It's important to note that Shun Kee isn't a 1-click reservation experience. It's highly recommended to use Whatsapp to contact them and reserve. There is no website as well. Once your time comes, you'll need to head to a specific set of stairs down from the dockside on the harbour, right next to a pedestrian bridge. The location on Google Maps is called "Shun Kee Typhoon Shelter Seafood". A boat will come to pick you up and take you to the sampan boats in the harbour, which will be your dining room. The food there is fresh, tasty, and plentiful. It really tastes and feels like you're sitting in someone's kitchen, getting meals prepared by a friend's auntie. The boats do move in the water (obviously) so be sure you're ok with some light rocking.

The reason is listed below. The food was good but pricing is deceptive. What was ordered to the point of finger selection on the menu became something else when the bill came. Their service was attentive but to only a certain point such as tea servings or order more food. The ambiance is nice. Atypical good quality restaurant. Our bill was almost $7000hkd. A few dishes where we ordered small but the waitress decided upon herself that a larger plate is more sufficient for a bigger party. Yes, we had 10 adults but that is not a reason to change it without informing us. There were lots of leftovers and we decided not to finish it. The waitress knew we were not local and perhaps used this opportunity to scam us because we were going to pay for it and we will most likely not come back to eat here again. There was no such thing as language barrier since food was ordered in Mandarin as the waitress spoke Mandarin & Cantonese. I would give them 1 star for trying to cheat us but honestly, 2 stars is as far as I can go just because their food was delicious.
