This restaurant is related to Mak's Beer, a well known local micro-brewery, which doesn't have a taproom at its facility. I was looking to try some of their beers, but when I ordered a flight, the waiter came back to inform me that of the four I picked off the list, 3 were actually not on tap. He proceeded to give me a revised beer list with many items crossed off. Needless to say that's somewhat disappointing. I would have given this a 3, but the staff is really nice, he happily went back and forth to bring me samples to try. I also like the decor. With a wide open entrance, the place is bright, airy and inviting. I won't mind being back to enjoy some beer with food, hopefully by then this relatively new establishment has a better handle of things.

A solid burger place in Kennedy Town…read more The menu says "Taste of Leisure" and that's certainly the vibe here. The environment is more of a hipster bar than a restaurant with about 2 dozen craft beers, high table seating, exposed brick wall, billiard table, electronic darts arcade, and chill music playing overhead. The burger is a bit of a cross between a gourmet and bar style burger. Simple handmade patty, but presented well in a mess-containing wooden tray. I usually go with a standard cheeseburger to truly assess a new burger joint, but opted for the Handmade US Angus Beer and Mushroom Burger ($88) with American cheese and sautéed mushrooms and onions. The burger was cooked medium by default (without being asked) and juices started dripping out when I went for my first bite. The meat was flavorful and the American cheese reminded me of my childhood. The bun was slightly over toasted that made it less malleable around the burger, but it just made it a little messier. The bun also had a slight sweetness that surprisingly accompanied the burger well. The best bet for a burger in Kennedy Town (as of current), I'll be back for the same burger and also try some of the other non-beef burger options as well as starters and snacks.

On the day we were there, it was ordering 600g off main and get a bottle for 150 or similar things like that. However the duck leg is very meh.. small portion and not that great. Oyster was small but tasted ok. I have to say one staff was giving us such bad service - when we asked for the wine list without knowing it's at the back, she just took the menu away. We managed to get a good seat inside and it is a good environment for catching up with your friends. Looking at the menu, it offered a good variety of Western food and dessert. Even though I was not full from my dinner at other restaurant nearby, I decided to have dessert instead. Certain items on the menu caught my attention and 'Ice Cream ChimiChanga' was what I ordered. Didn't wait long for the dessert to serve, taking one bite of it and 'wooooo' was my reaction after my first bite. The ice cream is wrapped up with flour tortillas making it a nice combination, and you can mixed it with raspberry to enjoy it even more. At the price of HK$78, I find it to be pricey but what do you expect when enjoying a meal in this kind of restaurant? As for the service, it was ok. The waitress serving us understood and spoke English well. Overall, I enjoyed my dessert and my glass of white wine. I may return to try its main course in the near future.

My coworkers and I have a tradition of coming here to spend our hard earned money on pricy food. On one occasion I simply ordered an appetizer: I tried steak tartare for the first time here, and became a fan. Being the opportunistic people that we are however, our main draw to this place are its daily special discounts. My first time dining here was on Wagyu Wednesday, an awesome discount for getting the Wagyu burger on a Wednesday. Mussels Monday (all-you-can-eat mussels of different flavors, on a Monday) is my most recent Frites endeavor. Be careful with mussels, especially if they're all-you-can-eat. In my childhood I had read about the dangers of eating bad mussels (mussels that don't open after cooking), but I mostly ignored them this time around and faced the repercussions the next day. It wasn't too bad for me, but I am taking a break from mussels for a bit. The Laksa Mussels were notably delicious. My coworker and I were particularly interested in the unlimited steak offer they had for the weekend, named "Strip Night". We wanted to challenge ourselves to getting our money's worth of meat, and possibly risked developing heart disease in the process, but in the end it was well worth the experience. As with any all-you-can-eat situation, the more food that we had already eaten, the less active the service staff were in trying to help us, i.e. they often stopped looking in our general direction, pretending to not see us. I understand their tactics: I am also always looking to save money, which is why I came to their all-you-can-eat deal nights. I still got what I wanted, as there is no time limit per se (except during the period of time in Hong Kong when dining-in was banned after 6PM). The steaks were delicious, and I was able to experiment with eating different cooking temperatures of steak. No more well done steaks for me!

They cater to locals and tourists, as well as the constantly growing expat population. So I was not one bit surprised when I saw a Belgian restaurant in the food section of Causeway Centre, across from the Wanchai Ferry Pier and next to the Sun Hung Kai Financial Building. It's a somewhat trendy place with an European ambience, and upon entering, I found that the language spoken by the receptionists and servers was English and not Chinese. (For those of you who have never been to HK or China, this means that your wallet will be emptied but your stomach will not be full.) Set lunches with their at best mediocre selections run about USD30, which is pretty steep even in the expensive financial districts in HK. If you want to order a la carte, items are around USD 30 - 40, although steak frites will set you back about $50. Bear in mind that this is not upscale as in Morton's or Ruth Chris. This is more like a Yard House kind of place. SCHNITZEL AND FRITES: It's a popular European dish which is a thin pork cutlet that is tenderized, coated with bread crumbs and deep fried. The bread crumb coating ewas light and crispy; the meat was tender, flavorful and yummy. The frites (fries in English) were less impressive though. There were literally numerous Belgian Fries stalls, carts, and kiosks wherever we went when we were in Brussels and we loved Belgian fries. The most distinct difference is that the potatoes are not soft and starchy, and they are fried twice. Sorry... but the fries here tasted nowhere near those in the streets of Brussels. THE GOOD WIFE SAUSAGE: It was an interesting looking sausage that was in the form of a coil. Although I've tried various sausages in Brussels, I never had the opportunity to taste this particular variation. It looked and tasted like a "Boudin" sausage which is typically made with pork and is lighter in color. I liked the texture and its taste; and if you are an European sausage fan, you'll probably like this. The gravy was tasty with a strong aroma of onion, but I was hoping for a rich gravy with an authentic Flemish dark beer flavor. The mash was good, but nothing to write home about, especially at these prices.

I love the industrial decor of this locations and think food is a bit better than the others too…read more The outdoor seating is generally pretty full on the weekends and provides great people watching even from inside. The brunch/breakfast items are pretty standard, hard to mess up items. The scrambled eggs were nice and light, but not runny. I had been craving pancakes for a while but hadn't seen many other options for them in Ktown. Although these pancakes weren't amazing, the stack of 3 were fluffy enough to satisfy my craving, even though they were a but chewy. Jaspas in general overs a wide variety of food options which makes it good for groups and a range of preferences/dietary restrictions. The food quality is just ok/average though in my book. It's not mind blowing good, but you know that you're going to get a decent standard. The prices are a bit high given the food is just ok, but that's the western premium carried over from soho. The extra 4th star is definitely for the decor of this Kennedy Town location.
